Thank you very much!
Great video, keep up, the good work. 📸
Thank you 👍
Interesting. Thanks.
You're welcome
My camera has no minimum shutter speed, so I would prefer play with manual, just keep ISO auto with 1600 maximum Great video
That sounds like a great idea. Enjoy.
@@joeredski thank you for your video. I am not night photographer. Do you think ISO 1600 will be OK? Or I will need go for 3200? My camera is 77d I am not sure she will be good for 3200
@@reverton77 you will probably need to go for at least 3200. Especially in dark areas. When I'm out at night the auto ISO is constantly going to 6400. Just remember to keep your aperture as wide as possible such as F2 .8 and use a shutter speed of around 1/100 seconds. Don't worry too much about noise you can always get rid of that in post processing.
@@joeredski thank you so much. I will do it.
Nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Your good at this. Thanks for sharing. I'm taking it all in.
A little bit of dodge and burning here and there I will experiment with also.
Thank you so much. I appreciate that.
Hello,I'm a french beginner photographer,I'm discovering your channel,I enjoy so much your tips,it's very clear and understandable ,nice to meet you, thank you very much!
Thank you very much. Glad you are enjoying my channel. All the best 🙏
Thank you for a wonderful video, amazing insights. If I may ask a quick question, I seem to be struggling with White Balance. The old town near where I live have a lot of street lamps.. my photos come out pretty yellow in my GR3x.. do you think, it is invetiable and correct it in post (which I do not do much) or a specific WB setting that I can play around with. The other aspect is related to meetering modes.. I general switch between highlight metering and spot.. not sure if any specific metering mode is suited for night time photograpy. Many thanks 🙏
Thank you for your great feedback. I really appreciate it. I’m not sure what White Balance setting you are using but I only ever use Auto White Balance - I’ve never had any issues. Unfortunately, the street lights and shop lights are quite yellow, that’s what I find anyway. If it’s an issue for you then correcting in post is the right solution. I only use Multi Segment metering mode which works very well at night time. I’ve tried Highlight Weighted metering mode, but I find the Shadows can be very dark. You can only learn new stuff by testing out different settings so try out new white balance settings and metering mode settings if you want and find out what works best for you. But as I said, I keep them as simple as possible. All the best.
Thanks a lot for the reply Joe! I totally agree on keeping it as simple as possible. I will test out with some of the settings just to see how it differs and to get a hang of the system. Will keep your feedback on the metering modes in mind 👍 Take care and Looking forward to more of your content. All the very best!
Thank you again. Enjoy 👍
Amazing video, thank you very much !
My pleasure. Thank you.
Another great video Joe.
Thank you 👍
The car advice is very nice. We don't get many outdoors decorations on christmas over here, but this tip has opened my mind up for a shot such as that one. Though unfortunately car hoods are all buried in snow here most of the time, still nice though. As for editing, I have a tip in return. It's probably hard to implement if you're using a more limited software like Lightroom, but you can do it easily in something like Darktable which has the diffusion module in it. The tip consists of adding diffusion to the blue hue (magentaish blue to cyan blue range) on the christmas strips. It adds a lot of realism to the photo, because the human eye naturally blurs blue more than it does with let's say red (this probably has explanation with the wavelengths and whatnot). On the opposite, blurring anything in the red spectrum will add surrealism to the photo.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for the tip. I appreciate it. It sounds interesting. Hopefully the snow will melt and you’ll be able to try it out. Merry Christmas 👍🍺
Ignore the ghosts Joe... Have a great Christmas 🍻
😅 Thank you so much. Have a great Christmas too 👍🍺
Great tips Joe. Rye looking very special this year. Have a great Christmas and see more from you in the New Year
Thanks, you too! I appreciate your support. Have a great Christmas.
Merry Christmas Joe! I'm kicking myself for not getting out this past weekend but it was bitterly cold here. Supposed to be warmer here next weekend, perhaps I'll be able to get out then.
Merry Christmas to you too Scot. Sometimes the weather can ruin your game. It happens to me all the time. But you’ll get out there soon my friend. Have a lovely holiday season.
Another great video, thanks Joe and Merry Christmas to you and yours. I have to disagree with you on one point. I think that if you were greeted by ghosts last year they did a pretty good job of convincing you to be a good guy. You seem like a pretty solid gentleman to me. None of us is perfect to be sure but I'm betting there's more good to you than bad. Merry Christmas my friend. :)
Thank you so much my friend. I appreciate the thought. However, it’s all in jest, so hopefully better than I say I am. I appreciate your support. Have a lovely Christmas my friend 👍
Thank you Joe. Merry Christmas!
Same to you! Have a good holiday season. And thank you.
Speaking from a city where the old town's web of cobblestone streets is a major tourist attraction, I never change the reddish hue in my snaps. B&W comes in lots of versions, depending on the channel preference or sensitivity.
A great video, as always. Thanks
Thank you so much for your support. Happy Christmas to you. 👍
Excellent! Merry Christmas and Happy New Years forever!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too Loren 👍
Merry Christmas Joe! Do you use any film simulation? And are those photos edited?
Merry Christmas to you too. I don’t use film simulators. I use my Lightroom Presets and make some minor tweaks.
@ Great! Thank you Joe! Enjoy the holiday!
Great video as usual, Joe. Good tips. I wish you a very happy Christmas and all the best next year. By the way, it seems you have some kind of device to hold your GR and activate the shutter. Can you please explain?
Thank you very much my friend. Of course.! I have a disability and I can only use a camera if it’s mounted on support, so I use a selfie stick and a have a wired shutter release attached to the camera. Have a great Christmas dude.
@@joeredski Thanks Joe. You're the best.
My pleasure man. Thank you for your support. Have a great holiday season 👍
Good tips, thanks
My pleasure. Thank you.
Well done. Do you see a benefit of having auto ISO starting at 800 instead of 100 on the GRiii? Happy Holidays!
Thank you. I use auto ISO starting at 800 at night because it ensures my camera prioritizes faster shutter speeds, which are crucial for capturing sharp images in low-light conditions without motion blur. Starting at ISO 100 might lead to slower shutter speeds that aren’t practical for handheld shooting or capturing movement. With a range of 800 to 6400, I can trust my camera to adapt to changing light while maintaining a good balance between image quality and exposure. Merry Christmas to you.
@@joeredski thanks for the response. Does it prioritize keeping ISO low instead keeping shutter speed at 1/100 minimum? I must give it a try.
@@rolfkarlsson9439No. It will keep within the range of 800 - 6400 ISO, but it probably drop the shutter speed below 1/100 seconds if you enter a pretty dark area.
Hi Joe I have a question for you. Some say that street photography is about capturing interesting actions or moments. In your photos many of the subjects are just walking or nothing compelling happening. There’s no emotion, or decisive moment. What do you have to say to those critics?
It’s a night shoot. It’s more difficult to capture decisve moments when it’s dark. I tend to shoot from a distance at night and I don’t focus on capturing emotion. It’s more respectful. I try to capture atmosphere at night rather than emotion. If you look at my day stuff, it’s much more about capturing emotion and decisive moments. I talk about and provide examples of capturing emotion quite a lot in my other videos.
@ would you agree that capturing “moments” is just one form of street photography, and that there are authentic and good street photography techniques that do not involve decisive moments but rather focus on, say the composition, the scene, and so on? Just asking as a street photographer starting out and trying to find my style.
Yes of course. Street photography comes in many different forms: Emotions, walking, empty streets, etc. Starting out by capturing composition is the best way to learn the craft in my opinion. You can capture someone from afar and focus on the leading lines of the street and the structure of the buildings. There are no hard rules.
@@joeredskiI get the feeling of “street landscape” when looking at these photos; beautiful work.
Thanks for a great video….One question…because you are shooting at F2.8 what is your focus point when framing the reflections on the car hood? Is it the car reflections or the window ?
Have a very Happy Christmas Joe
Thank you. Have a Merry Christmas to you too 👍
Joe, you have the best street photography channel on UA-cam!
Thank you my friend. That means a lot 👍
Your videos are always so informative and interesting.
Thank you Lorraine .
Thanks, Joe. I enjoyed the video. I've also subscribed and followed you on Instagram. BTW, my favourite top is to work the scene. Keep up the great work 👍
Thank you very much, Mike. I appreciate the subscription and the follow. Thanks for letting me know your favourite technique of the bunch. Happy Christmas.
And to you. Have a great one 🎅
The best advise I can make is: Just go out, (and take some photos)!
So helpful Joe! Very excited to try your recommended nighttime U1 settings for my Christmas travels!
Very glad that I can be of inspiration to you Michael. All the best trying out those settings on your Christmas travels. Have a good one.
I have watched many Videos on Street Photography. Yours is the best. It is very practical and I am learning a lot from watching your videos. I have a bridge camera and not planning to upgrade until I can use my camera well. Your videos encourages me to use the camera I have to take interesting images.
Thank you very much for this fantastic feedback, Lorraine. I truly appreciate it and I'm glad that I'm inspiring you to get out there with your camera. All the best and enjoy shooting. Joe.
Good tips Joe 👍 and a couple of crackers in there 😂😂 My tip - be smiley🙂
Almost everyday I do a shoot, which is also my walk for the day. Under an hour is my normal shoot day, which I have been doing for 5 yrs + as mostly street. This way it is only a camera, a lens, and a wrist strap required. If there is a long day of shooting, I consider that 1 1/2 to 2hrs. At my age the legs are pretty tired by then. An yea, one could take a coffee break or a bite to eat in-between a shoot. What a great place you had your shoot within. Very good images taken. I see you shoot the people walking out of the frame, while I shoot just the opposite, with the subject facing the larger space or negative space. Saying goodbye is how I look at a walk out of frame, which can have a feel to it. Do you ever shoot close and behind someone to have the same view as the subject is seeing the world as -- it can work. Looks like leaving home without an extra battery for a GRIIIx camera is testing fate. I have never seen the camera in person. I take it the size of a Minolta 110 spy camera 🙃 Thanks for all the hard work in putting a UA-cam video together -- must take a long time and loads of effort in getting it all right. - Loren Schwiderski - street photography
Thanks for the tips man. I will give the close from behind perspective a go. I appreciate the positive comments too. It is a very small camera. I do not know if it is as small as the Minolta, though. I appreciate your support 🙏
Excellent video. You have now inspired me to take photos with my Pocket 3. Thank you.
I'm glad I have inspired you. Enjoy.
I live in a deprived area of East London and struggle to be inspired to take photos there. After watching this video I may change my mind.
You can get great photos anywhere. Especially in London. Best of luck to you. Enjoy!
Your videos are so interesting and informative. Most of the other UA-camrs focus on expensive and cumbersome equipment rather than the actual photography.
I appreciate that! Thank you very much.
Thanks for the tips Joe good luck and happy Christmas to you
My pleasure. Thank you so much. Have a great Christmas too.
Really useful video. Thank you.
My pleasure. Thank you.
Useful to know that you don’t need expensive camera equipment particularly large lenses.
Glad you found that tip helpful.
I am not an expert, but I often use the fishing technique, look for light, and look for moments.
thanks for letting me know John. You're using the best ones.
