20 YEARS A PRO NEWS Photographer
20 YEARS A PRO NEWS Photographer
2004, 20 years ago, I walked into my local newspaper handed them some pictures I'd shot, and in the words of the late great Yosser Hughes said "give us a job I can do that". Incredibly the Chief photographer Warren Buckland must have been pretty desperate so actually gave me a shot. 20 years later I'm still there shooting for Hawke's Bay Today the best damn newspaper in New Zealand, no, literally the best. So as the mother ship is calling me away for a month or so I thought I'd go through some of my archives, and came up with this selection of images from 2008 that really struck a chord with me. You see In my humble opinion photography transcends life people come and go and when they're gone all we have left is our memory and photographs. It's vitally important to photograph every day. I love a good landscape in good light there is nothing more relaxing than waiting for the right conditions to photograph a mountain or a river love it, but they will generally not change much in your lifetime, but people, people change they arrive and they leave, the fashions change the hairstyles change for some they just bugger off completely, but it's people that matter. Documentary photography is my happy place. Photograph people because one day those people will leave us and overtime our memories can fade.
I'll be home soon Mum and Dad love you XX

A whole new world of photographic possibilities A quick spur of the moment opportunist run and gun shoot whilst driving over the Te Apiti wind farm near Woodville on the North Island of New Zealand. I never realized wind turbines could make such great photographic subjects. I like the first one with the tires. I think I've only ever seen them in boring settings, unlike the amazing mountains and hills you have there. Great work as usual Paul. I can't subscribe again, but I've clicked the like button as always, lol.

These pictures are probably very good from a purely photographic sense but they clearly show how these wind farms are destroying pristine countryside and like here in Australia in North QLD and other places Koala Habitat.

Hi Paul. Bloody infectious these Spotmatic’s. I took a roll of HP5 in to be developed and on the way out I looked in the second hand cabinet and to my utmost joy, there was a Spottie F, bagged it quick as a flash, mint condition, came with a SMC Takumar 1.4 / 50 with filter and lens cap, light meter works, and timer functions $120 au. Now I have the SP and the F, I’m having so much fun using them it’s ridiculous. The SP has a 3.5 / 55 super Takumar, but I mainly use a 28 / 200 zoom on it, mainly because you don’t have to change primes. I was thinking on investing in primes though mabe just three to keep in the bag for tripping around. I was thinking a 28, and a 135 to go with the 50 and 55 I already have, your thoughts on those ? I noticed on my F that it has open aperture focusing, the SMC lens has an extra lever to accomplish this, the view dose not darken and the light meter functions, So I would assume to keep this function the lenses used for this camera would need that extra lever. I’m enjoying your stuff. Don’t forget if your ever in Sydney, shoot me message and we can have a pint!

That’s awesome mate total bargain the spotties are cracking camera I have a super tak 28mm lens lovely condition definitely worthwhile picking one up for travel likewise the 135mm to be honest in don’t use it much but it plenty compact enough to cart around and have that extra pull when needed. Deffo catch up for a jar mate all I have to do is get there haha. Off back to old blighty in sept catch up with my folks so mate year after that do an Aussie trip

The flip screen on the Q3 would be nice for sure but I think if I were to dive in for another Leica it would have to be a Q mono version I love black and white and the colour conversion I do is good to my eyes but the thought of shooting a dedicated mono is appealing haha the gas is far greater than my wallet allows though. Nice video. The Bessa II has a lot to love, perhaps being the best 6x9cm folding camera ever made. The lens choices varied from excellent to outstanding. I shopped for one with the Apo-Lanthar some 40 years ago, but its price then, around $650 US seemed to grow faster than my budget. Last time I looked, some 20 years ago, they were over $2,500 and climbing fast. The Heliar is a 5-element upgrade from the 4-element Skopar. As noted in the video, the lenses perform about the same at best apertures, but the Heliar holds that performance at the wider openings. Frankly, with a negative size of 6x9cm, the Color-Skopar is more than sufficient. At first, I thought that the Bessa II in the video was modified to add the cold shoe on top plate, as the Bessa II didn't have one. Instead, they sold a little accessory shoe which clipped to the top of the camera. On reflection, and noting that the pins required to mount that accessory are missing (and would leave visible damage if removed), I think this is a very late version, where the Voigtlander factory installed the shoe. If shopping for a Bessa II, note its two possible issues. (1) The viewfinder/rangefinder is tiny and squinty by modern standards. That was the common style at the time. (2) Voigtlander used a particular design of strut system to erect and hold the front standard (the lens) parallel to the film plane. It is easier to physically damage, compared to the roll film folders from Zeiss, Agfa, and the host of Japanese copies of the day. If you find one with loose or bent struts, walk away. It is economically unrepairable.

The L3 is the lever actuated film advance version of the "VT" series, these being the last Canons which used the older style shutter with the slow speeds on a separate, front-mounted selector dial. Here in the US, we see the VT commonly, but the L bodies are fairly rare. You do not want to collapse that Leitz lens when on this body. You can do so on IV and earlier Canon models. The issue is not fouling the shutter curtain. With the VT, Canon improved on its copy of Leica bodies by adding baffling inside the body to further reduce lens flare effecting the exposure. When this type of lens is mounted on those bodies and the lens is collapsed, the rear lens barrel hits and can damage both the baffle and the lens. In the early 1950s, Canon made at least one collapsible 50mm 1.9, which optically is inferior compared to the later 50mm 1.8 he has here. Trade that 50mm Elmar for a nice Canon 35mm 2.8.

Awesome advise and information Randall cheers I’ll be shopping again soon now haha I do enjoy 35mm. I looked at a VT and a ViT last year but they went for a lot more than I wanted to pay. Glad I dropped on the L3 and glad you told me about the elmar cheers
