SOLDIER'S SONG Mike Batt live at BUSH HALL
Originally written for THE HOLLIES in 1980, it has been part of my live repertoire for some years. It's a fictitious and tragic story of a young cavalry officer experiencing his first love and his first battle. The concert was at Bush Hall, London, on 15th November 2022. Song: Music and Lyrics by me (MB), and published by Sony Music Publishing. String Quintet from the Docklands Sinfonia led by Emma Blanco. I originally arranged it for full orchestra, and the quintet are playing the string parts from the the 1980 arrangement.

VARIATIONS ON A RIFF - Reflections On A War Written and recorded in 1972 this ambitious 20 minute “album side” has never been released or heard publicly since it was recorded immediately prior to the Wombles success. It has lain, unheard, in a cupboard for 50 years. Side two was never created. Reflecting Batt’s thoughts about the Vietnam War which was raging at the time it resonates with today’...

Episode 3 of my casual "Mike Batt unchained" chats about whatever comes into my head. If you're bored- or would like to be, you've come to the right place! I ended up talking about "Caravans" and "Bright Eyes" lyrics.

The supremely talented Paula Masterton, as a Spanish villager, sings "Market Day In Guernica" - about the horrific Luftwaffe attack during the Spanish Civil War, as immortalised by Picasso's famous painting.

From "MEN WHO MARCH AWAY" - the Finale, - as WW2 breaks out, emphasising the endless cycle of conflict that did not, as was previously predicted, end with WW1 ("The war to end all wars") Alice Frankham leads the cast of the one-night-only concert version (2017)

The second time this song appears in the show- towards the end of Act 2. Katherine (Alice Frankham) and her husband George have just heard Chamberlain's declaration of War with Germany in 1939.

From my as yet unmounted musical play (except for this 2017 one-night-only staged symphonic concert). In this clip, Alice Frankham plays Katherine, and Alex Southern plays George. A young couple caught up in the horrors of WW1(and eventually the Spanish Civil War)

BATT-CHAT Episode 2 - Getting an orchestra to "feel" rock 'n' roll
Переглядів 7642 роки тому
A rambly, solo chat "to camera", like I usually do - this time I "landed" on a problem ERIC CLAPTON mentioned to me about strings on rock records. How do you write that "feel" into them? This is obvious to top arrangers I know but not necessarily all rock players.

I decided to record occasional - maybe even regular - chats to camera, about whatever comes into my head. Often it will be about my "craft". composition, lyric writing, arranging, etc. But it could be anything! Cold be impromptu performances. Please gimme your feedback! Mike :)

hes a lucky guy looking at pans people while hes singing ,i bought this when i was younger
I'm very happy my Rhubarb contribution made it into the song even though plinth, cartouche, and frenulum didn't make the cut. 😀
Beautiful song!
Absolutely beautiful performance thank you for sharing ❤❤Who is the amazing person singing ❤❤
Hi Mike. I enjoyed watching this video. As a composer and songwriter you very much influenced my style of writing, particularly in what I’d refer to as orchestral pop, ex. Caravans Song, Bright Eyes, Winter’s Tale etc. I also like the fact that in this video it’s essentially like you have just invited us into your writing room for a coffee and a chat. I too began in the day of manuscript paper and pencil and ruler. :)
Great song! Of course it is, it's by Mike Batt!!
Lovely.
One great writer appreciating another! Love you both!
Wonderful! ☺️
You brought us back to our childhood
😮 cool 😎 Mike
Heyy Mike ! .. nice .. I’ve added you to this 🤓🎶🎶👌🏻☀️👇🏻 1975 CHART HITS (All In Weekly Chart Entry Order) ua-cam.com/play/PLbO1DMzDZcphrbPyiOhDbBXMvnVHWHny9.html
Thanks a lot for creating this masterpiece!
My youngest sister learnt to play flute and got a few grades...my brother learnt classic guitar and got a few grades...his son learnt guitar and piano and ended up teaching others giving piano lessons...if I can't get the hang of something I'm afraid I give up too easily...as I've said before my niche is writing poetry but it took time to get the "Rythmn and Rhyme"...in-fact 30 years to get to print!!...but listening to music has always been a huge part of my life!!😊❣️
It is very interesting Mike...I've always loved music and to listen to the intricacies of what goes on to get the perfection needed for a result amazes me...I write poetry and have a small printed book "Rythmn and Rhyme" but even that took 30 of my years to get there...jotting words down sometimes in the middle of the night incase I forget them by morning!!... I never managed to play an instrument...recorders and violins at school but guitar lessons were difficult because I have short stubby fingers and big palms that could never quite cope with holding neck and wrapping round fingers on chords to get anything to sound musical...I so admire people like you and friends especially Justin Hayward who give us something out ears can endure that somehow just seemed to be picked out of nowhere...it was meant to be that way...thank you Mike 🎼😊❣️
This is sooo beautiful and very hard to play
It's beautiful. Thank god Mike isn't singing.
Love Mike’s singing
Mike, please please release more tracks from your great Bush Hall concert ... or even the complete event!
I saw this on tv as a kid. It's what made me want to make a musical, which I'm finally doing now at age 50!
Belíssimo!

A wonderful song.
🤔🤨 As a 74 year old Scooter Tramp, I just might swap My Hog for a leaf❕ 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🏍 ---> 🍃 ☺🤗😁❗ G-G.

As always when Bonnie sing's beautiful and Matt is great to. Love this song. 🇩🇰❤️
Que voz maravilhosa dessa mulher! As músicas dela são a trilha sonora da minha vida!
I discovered your Snark album while I was in a rather dark place and I cannot begin to describe what your work on the album means to me. Children Of The Sky has officially become my favorite song of all time. Thank you for this amazing musical gift!
I enjoyed that. I can't read, write or play. But always been interested in who does what and how it works. I'm a big JL fan. How did he get that music composed and arranged? How can a musician if, unable to read music?
Linda música parabéns 👏🇧🇷
Great to hear this! My first thought was "isn't this 'Valley of the Swords'?", then others of Mike's songs came to mind as well ... Obviously various parts have been recycled e.g. for the Tarot Suite, but that doesn't make it less interesting to enjoy this original-before-original-version. And so many musical ideas in it that we meet for the first time. A treasure unearthed!
Massive! Top band and wild arrangements. What a project to leave unfinished...
Is this from Bonnie Tyler's pre-nodule operation? Her voice sounds smooth here, not husky. I like both sounds.
Love this! Discovered this musical this year when Julian Lennon mentioned it in an interview. Definitely my favorite musical.
I love to hear this girl sing
Such a beautiful song!
Gracias corazón es música bonita de mis tiempos como la carcachita que tenia
Wonderful - long been a favourite song of mine, to listen to and to play and sing.
Obrigado
Clint Cage & The Big Revolt 😎 We need Side B my man! This rips
so where can I find recordings of the West End show????
Believe me, I thought it was an old song from the eighties, and suddenly I discovered that it is not permissible for it to be three months old
Glad you put this on youtube

So strong for the couples 😍✨ I love it 🌸 I love U Bonnie
Gosh. My favourite of all the wonderful songs you wrote (alongside Walls of the world and Mona, of course). Would have been worth travelling all the way to London just to hear that performed live. Absolutely amazing, wonderful, brilliant!
One of my favorite songs of yours. Downright chilling lyric, beautifully arranged. I still remember the first time I listened to it. Goosebumps.
Thanks for another highlight of a really enjoyable evening with Mike Batt and friends. Are we going to have any of the madhouse ramblings that were between each song or is that a treat left just for memories of the lucky ones of us who were there?
A voice that never falters 🎶💕
Great!
