Harvesting potatoes with our potato plow
Join us on our small farm as we showcase the process of harvesting potatoes using a one-row potato plow! Despite facing significant challenges this season from a drought during bloom, to a hurricane flooding our fields just before harvest, we’re excited to share that we still managed to secure a good crop.
In this video, we’ll take you through our potato harvesting process, highlighting the hard work that goes into farming. We'll also touch on how we disked our sweet corn and popcorn fields, which were severely affected by the hurricane's flooding. The flood got all our corn, beans, and tomatoes. We are so thankful we got to harvest most of our potato crop!
Thank you for watching our video! If you enjoyed it, please give us a thumbs up, leave a comment with your thoughts, and don’t forget to subscribe for more updates from our farm. We’re committed to coming back bigger and better next year, and we’re excited to share our journey with you!

Awesome grade work!
Thanks so much! We have been doing everything we can, I’m definitely no professional, but the job is done.
great video! around here we had a lot of people struggle harvesting any potatoes due to lack of rain- y’all had a lot!
Thanks so much, we lost probably 75% of ours due to drought too. We were just happy to get as many as we did after the flood hit them.
tons of taters 😮 🥔
We love them taters!🥔
Corn looks great for the maze. Hope it had a good turn out!
We had a great turnout especially for our first year. We will make it better each year so it’s never the same when you go through.
Very informative. I’ve been meaning to change the oil on my Kubota but hadn’t gotten around to it. This gave me the final push I needed.
Thank you so much, we don’t change ours nearly enough. Definitely trying to get better about it, it can extend the life of your engine more than we think! Thanks so much for watching.
Can’t wait to hear about the maze!!
We will have some videos here shortly. We went through the maze while our scarers were inside so you will get to see how everything was set up!
There is nothing better than a fresh Cherokee purple with a little salt in the summer time! We are already looking forward to next years crop!
That’s the way we love to eat them! Thanks so much, we are too, all of these got took out by the flood.
Tomatoes look great!!
Thank you so much, they tasted great too!
Awesome harvest!! Compared to last year y’all’s beat mine by a landslide.
Thank you so much, our potato’s were short from the drought this year! We are looking forward to planting season!

Nice planter brother. The old faithful 7000. I've known a many a farmer, who has used one of those. I was one of them. Don't think I've seen one that you could use as a sprayer like that. If ya don't watch out, you'll be done planted 10 acres and looking more ground to plant.
I have already noticed it lol. I’m already looking for more ground to plant. I’m happy as I can be with it! I’ve been doing some research on it and reading the book trying to figure it out. I’ve never used one before, I just used a tater plow and hand planted it last year. Hope you have a great week ahead brother!
@@Volfarmer Before you know it, you'll be a mega farmer. Thousands of acres, big machines. Get er done.
Excited to
Can’t wait to see more of this corn planter.
We will be getting some more footage of it this week. I am very excited to use it.
Get you an old winder screen and zip tie it to the front of the tractor. It'll help with the pods off the weeds. I've done it many times. Have you thought about taking soil samples and sending them to the Dept of Ag, and see what you need to add to the dirt? It'll make a diffference come harvest time.
That is a great idea! I will try it next time we bush hog! Yes I was wanting to this year, but I didn’t get them done in time. I will get them done this year and have a better idea what to put in the ground next season!
A great message to start off the video!!! Love this video.
It’s always great to start off with God! Thanks so much for always watching! We are trying to improve them every video!
One thing I have been told about chemical fallow is that it one day won't work anymore. Don't worry about us getting the weeds though, because they'll never get resistant to iron. We have very light and dusty soil thats soft and steep. We gotta be real careful plowing.
We only tore up our flat ground, or we would have a few washouts on the mountains around us. I will probably plant a cover crop after harvest this fall to hold everything in place and replace the nutrients for next season.
I just saw this video, I did a lot of plowing when I was growing up I always enjoyed it, the plow is doing a good job, really good dirt.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I love it, this was my second time ever plowing. It did great, and we have great dirt. It’s about the perfect mix of sand from the creek bed, and black soil.
I'd rather have a clean break on a shear bolt, than to have a nut on it and have to spend time beating it out. Never underestimate the power of prayer. It does work. If things go according to plan, I'll head up that way after harvest, and we'll see what we can do about gettting that big ass rock out. I wish you a bountiful harvest this year.
It always does work, even if you don’t think it did. God always knows better than we do! I really appreciate it, if you grow any crops this year I wish you the same! I’ll take you up on that, just haul an excavator on up here😂
@@Volfarmer I'll bring a 250 Volvo and find a haul truck. I expect it's a rather large boulder. We've been running around getting fields ready for corn, and next month, we'll be harvesting the spring wheat.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, we are excited to start planting this years crop!
Great vid thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Another great video my friend. I have to say, you done bette rthan I did. My second time plowing, I broke 2 shear bolts and folded the plow in half. It was interesting that I went on both sides of a big rock, and not down the middle. But she folded over like a tin can. The second pass going by that stone, it lifted the front end off the ground then popped off. That was how I folded the thing. I do miss farming. it was a part of my life for a long time. Have a gud un.
The only way to learn is to get out there and do it! When you mess up just fix it and learn from your mistakes. That sounds like a hell of a first time plowing, I bet it was a long ass day. I love farming and hope I’m able to have some part in it till the day I die! Hope you have a good one as well, thanks so much for watching and commenting!
@@Volfarmer My granddad always taught me when I messed up, take a step back, and look at the big picture. Then regroup and get back at it. It didn't take us long to repair it, and I got right back at it. We only had three tractors that we used. A Farmall A, Super A, and an H. By the time I was old enough, we had moved on to just tending a 2 acre garden. My cousin had leased our fields, since he had bigger equiment.
@@EdwardSimpson159 it is so cool to hear some of your family history, and how they went about farming. The old timers always know what’s best!
@@Volfarmer Absolutely. There's an old gospel song that says We can learn a lot, if we take the time to listen, to older people. They have wisdom that we have yet to gain. So, every chance you get, stop and listen, and see what they have to say.
Excited to see more popcorn content 🍿 awesome vid!
Thanks so much, we are excited to try something new this year! We will keep you updated on the popcorn!
Great video, not many people plow anymore usually just see no till planting. Love to watch the dirt turn over! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much, I love turning that dirt over. It’s one of my favorite things to do around the farm!
Get after it, love doing doughnuts in the snow!
Very neat to hear the family history, and all the events and what not your farm offers! I wish you the best in all your endeavors!
Thanks so much for watching, I always love watching your channel. I wish you the best in everything y’all are doing on your farm as well!
I’m so excited to see the progress that happens in the bottom! Keep up the great videos! Great things are going to come from all the hard work.
Thanks so much for watching! We are ready to see what happens for y’all in the upcoming lawn season, and wish you the best!
I would put in a blind ditch. Drain tile in the ground, instead of an open ditch. It looks like the ground slopes off pretty hard from the highway. That would cause washouts all along an open ditch. Where you were standing at the end, I'd also put a small run off pond towards that big ol tree, probably a 10x10, then run the pipe from the far side of the pond on through the fields, into another ditch, if there's one over that way. One of our fields had a sharp slope to it, that made part of it kinda useless, because of the standing water. We put in over a thousand feet of tile in the ground, and it made a world of difference. Might could use it for a hay field for a year or so, until the ground gets dried out. Just a couple ideas fer ya bud.
Thanks for the great ideas! I would love to have it where you couldn’t tell there was a ditch there. We were thinking about them plastic culvert tiles, but i started looking at the price and got a little hesitant lol. That’s what we want when it’s all said and done, I know for sure we are going to put tile under the road. Hopefully we can just do what you did and put in a bunch of tile in! Hope you have a blessed week, thank you for watching as always!
@@Volfarmer You're welcome. I always enjoy learning about new places, and try to help out as much as I can, from my own experiences.
YeeeeHaaaaww. That's how we do it in a small town. Get out there and get after it. And there's that purdy gal, I've been missin seein. She's a natural wheelman. Y'all can have that snow and mess. I used to enjoy it, but now that I'm 50 years old, I despise the mess. I can tolerate the cold, but the snow and ice ain't fer me anymore. Y'all have a gud'n and have a blast in the snow.
She sure is, I’m a lucky man. I’ll take all the snow we can get. We usually only get one or two snows that lay, so we have to take advantage of it when we get it. I can’t stand the cold unless there is snow on the ground for some reason, I reckon I ain’t got enough meat on my bones😂 hope you have a gooden as well, and we definitely will keep having fun out in it. Thanks for watching as always!
P r o m o S M 😄
Great video! Awesome property and footage of the process. How did you get started in Christmas Trees? Is seed stock fairly easy to come by? The idea has crossed my mind a few times, but haven't brought it to the front burner.... yet. Love that kubota too they are pretty bullet proof tractors from the ones I've used and seen.
Thanks so much! My Grandpaw started it back in the 70s. His brother in law would cut tops out of wild Fraser Fir trees off the roan, and they would take them to sell in Atlanta. Then my Grandpaw started his own farm, and him and both his sons just did trial and error till they found out what worked for them and we have been doing it ever since. We had trees that produced seed, and collected a bunch now it is all in freezers and we just use it when we need it. Plants are getting harder to come by but you can still get them. Thank you, they have always ran Kubota tractors, and you’re right they definitely are pretty bulletproof tractors. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful scenery. That must be western NC. thanks for sharing.
Yes, it is In Mitchell County, NC. The mountains definitely are beautiful. I think my favorite time is when the trees change colors in the fall, it changes the whole mountain. Thanks for watching and commenting!
What's goin on brother. Still hard at it I see. Time to churn and burn. But that'll have to wait a little whie. Ya'll bout to get hammered with a butt ton of snow in hte coming days. Be a good little break, slow down and enjoy the scenery. That was a big damn ass rock ya hit bud. Not hard to miss, especially in a corn field. That candy corn field, I'd run a deep bottom plow through it and let it lay. I'd go a good 8 inches deep, that way the stuff you put out on it, will be turned over, deep in the ground.
We are definitely still hard at it, I’m ready to start tearing up some ground! But like you said that will have to wait a little while. I hit a few biggens today, I’m just glad it hit the tripod and didn’t hit anybody. When would you plow the candy corn field? I’m wanting to plow both, I’ve been leaning towards waiting till early march. But if it would be better to do it now we have some warmer weather in the next two weeks. I’m always trying to learn the best time and way to do things. Thanks for letting me know! If I don’t hear back till next video you have a great weekend, and I hope everything is going great on your farm!
@@Volfarmer I'd go ahead and at least plow it when it warms up. That'll give it time to lay and rot until March. Then run the disc through it for a fine tune. Also, I'd recommend taking soil samples and sending it off to the agriculture dept and let them tell you what your soil needs or doesn't need. And definitely do a crop rotation. Corn takes a lot out of the ground. Is there a way I can get up with you, so we don't blow up the commennt section?

Merry Christmas and I hope you have a blessed New Year too. We have been getting after it, it was nice to have a few days to celebrate the birth of Jesus, and get to hang around and talk with family and friends. And I can’t forget getting to eat some great food till your about to pop. Come on out next tree season, I’d like to meet you and get to have a conversation in person. I have something planned for this fall, if everything goes as planned you’ll have to get out here before Christmas and check everything out. If it wasn’t for that help we couldn’t have gotten everything down and set up in time. Once we get the lot set up, it’s usually just the family, and a friend or two on the weekends. Once you find good help you have to treat them right, and hang onto them. Hard workers are few and far between now a days. Everyone wants to have an easy job. When we go home at the end of the day, we know we earned our pay for the day. We will keep you updated on what is going on around the farm this winter.
