    Tbh i think master is better for starting r&d career in industry. The thing is if it's not chemical pharmaceutical but biomedicine or biotech, to be fair u need to ph.d not enough master.. Cuz there's lots of subtle and delicate factors to consider for research and study.. really complicating. But the compensation and secure job is not enough and so hard..

    If you dont know what to do after university by all means be a teacher. Even if its just for your 20s. However, the pay thing is a huge stop for a lot of people and even more so for certain subjects. For example, Im have PhD in industrial mathematics. My day rate is £1500 doing freelance consulting. Why would i want to be a high school maths teacher for £24k a year? And even if i wasnt a PhD, even with just a bachelors degree, there are job roles starting at £35-50k/year with less hours and more benefits. This is why the UK has a shortage of mathematicians and even more so why there are shortages of maths students. We now have non maths specialists teaching mathematics in high school.

    Finally a good video on youtube explaining how stupid is the career pathway of phds. And I am saying this as a PhD in Biotech. If I could go back in time I would go to medicine. Or even just get a bachelor and an MBA. You'd get far more career options for higher pay with less experience needed.

      I think so. But they may be too busy to reply. I'd also contact people working for the PI, such as technicians, postdoc, grad students.

Such a competing environment makes me feel little hope for even becoming a PI in the future. I have another 1 year to graduate and I am also preparing for a data scientist! Your story is very inspiring! Thanks for sharing!

    hi Ju, I read your article online and now came to your channel. Thank you for all your sharing with your experiences which are very useful. I have similar experience like you. Bachelor major in chemistry but I run away from chemistry and academic after grad. Now I am an Engineer and doing data analysis related jobs. Also would like to explore opportunity in data science in near future. Hope you can keep sharing your learning and feeling for this area and we can communicate under your videos :)

    Hey, thaks for the insight, I find myself in a similar position (finishing my phd) and evaluating my future. Close to the end of the video 17:30 you mention that consulting was listed as not recommended for your personality. Which site/program/source did you use to get that kind of association between your personality and careers? Thanks!!

    I will get my Phd in non-cs field and non-statistics, non-math field, I wanna become a mle, but it seems that it's extremely difficult to get a job without any publication related to ml and any research experience in ml, in this case, do you have any suggestions for me? thanks

    • @juyangtech946
      @juyangtech946 3 роки тому

      If you are looking for MLE, I'd recommend you start with being a software engineer (SWE) if you don't have strong math background. A lot of the MLE's work is coding and engineering. There are more SWE positions than MLE. You certainly don't need publications and research experience to become a MLE or SWE. But you will need publications for research scientist positions in tech. I'll talk more about this in later videos.
