Thanks for this. I KNEW you would be like me and put Still Feel Gone at the top for UT. That record takes my breath away. I drive my band mates nuts because I'm always wanting to cover songs from that record. I love Trace and not sure which i would've put at number one, but respect your choice. Always heard all of Jeff's songs on Anodyne as pleas to Jay not to end it. Really fun watch. I need to dig into Wilco a bit more and you've given me good guidance there, so thanks. Haven't liked the last two SV records. Feel like Jay has abandoned his poetic 'Dylan' type writing in favor of this bare bones political shite that i can't listen to. Anyhow, thank you! Loved it!

Ah well, at least now if you find yourself roped into another rodeo you can say "this is not my first rodeo"🤠 even I've been to a couple (my agricultural high school used to hold one, prize money and all). Probably not my bag these days. My bag would be spending some good time by that there river you showed. Just gorgeous! And Graveface too, some quality stuff you flicked through AND purchased (well, except for King Sunny. That's one where i'd have a moral conundrum in submitting it for trade). Flesh eaters looked graveface-appropriate, and that Softs looks near immaculate for an OG. Surely their first sold more and will be easier to find? Very cool Flesh Eaters, I had just got a OG of the one you want if that makes you feel better. I have an original of that Ade album and it doesn’t sound the best but it did come out of Africa so it had some, shall we say, wear and tear to it. Bull Riding, growing up in NE that was always exciting, now, watch it on TV where they can edit it. People just want to see someone stomped by a bull, another blood sport

In my mind you grew up going to Rodeos every weekend. In fact, I would've thought you were one of those adorable kids who rode sheep at the age of five. Now, I love the idea of going to a rodeo. Probably in the same way American tourists flock to Buckingham Palace. But I wonder, on the back of your review, how much I could take? That's a bummer about the King Sunny Ade. Some of my family live in SC and we go to Tybee beach a lot. Savannah is a lovely place to visit. The last time we actually record shopped in Graveface, we waited in line for Record Store Day before it was a branded thing! lol! Glad to see they are still going strong!

Hi Jon - If I went to a rodeo , I could legitimately say " This IS my first rodeo " Seeing the " highlight " was fascinating. Cowboy 🤠 or MAGA Hat required 🤔. Definitely get A Minute To Prey , A Second To Die. X & Blasters are backing band on it. Hot 🔥 as hell & it's still not summer !

Jon. I truly thought that you grew up on a farm. 😎 I should keep the humorous comments to myself. I would have loved to have grown up on a farm. It beats the traffic and the overly angry city drivers anyday. Honestly. I have never been to a rodeo. But you never know what the future holds. I give you props for not sticking around for OA. Great video, I’ve just discovered this band, I’m from the UK where they are relatively unknown. I only have “They Want My Soul” which I love. Can’t wait to get a lot more of their albums! 👍🏻😀

I'll go one further that the I Got Drunk b/w Sin City 7" goes deeper than the No Depression LP in that the pressing is way better and contains the full raw sound of UT in their prime...!!!

This has prompted me to revisit a few albums that I hadn't listened to in a while, so thanks. I realize that I'm probably venturing into a hornet nest here, but having all this is one place so to speak, has affirmed the belief that my 10 favorite Farrar songs are all UT songs, while my 10 favorite Tweedy songs are probably 7 Wilco and 3 UT. Listening to Son Volt makes me wish I were listening to Uncle Tupelo. It's not that I think Son Volt is less than good, I just feel that Jay was at the height of his powers with UT. Jeff's arguably was there at the Summerteeth YHF confluence.

Maybe it's years of 'singing soft' that has him well placed to continue as he always has. That is cool, never knew Stax had a gospel imprint. You really picked a winner with Clarence there. Nice captures of Uncle Neil, how many bands can say the same touring the world and sounding that good. (albeit with some sloppy but endearing playing.) Great additions. Those Mwandishi Hancock records are superb, I need to pull those and spin em. Almost the same band on the Bennie Maupin lp on ECM too. Love that Julian Priester as well. Another one I should give a spin. Sounds like you found your sweet spot.

The Valerie Simpson sounded good. Never dropped acid, but sniffing glue and listening to records - yeah, that's the only way, baby.

I’m a Neil fan, and I live down the road from where he was born (Omemee Ontario) and he even has a cottage/cabin in the area and spends part of the year here with his wife Darryl Hannah. He even bought a stereo console from my turntable guy here in town and has been spotted several times but I have yet to see him, I almost don’t want to run into him because I don’t know how I would behave lol

Hi Jon - My Michigan friends are all seeing Neil tomorrow at Pine Knob an excellent outdoor venue. I guess Slowdive were almost rained 🌧 out in North Carolina but weather cleared just in time for them. I'm a big Seefeel fan & while somewhat overrated Tin Drum has several great songs particularly Sons Of Pioneers. 8 down & 8 to go for Da Rangers to win the Stanley Cup 🏆🏒 ! Should be about 40% Ranger fans for the games in Florida & Rangers are fully fit & have home ice advantage. Love Playoff Hockey particularly the no commercial break sudden death overtime games.

seefeel definitely has some dub influence, still need that one. classic ecm that one, sampled on entroducing. there's no real reason for most reissues of previously mass-produced records other than, hey we have access to the tapes and can squeeze some money out of them.

Anodyne is a break-up album. The whole second half of the record is about splitting up. Looking back on it, it's almost like they ordered the tracks to tell fans, "Yeah, this is it for the band. Fuck that other guy."

Sebastopol went from a C+ to A grade for me. It wasn't Trace, it never had to be, so be it.

I am, by no means, UTs first fan. But as someone who’s been listening to them for legitimately 36 years, and who… admittedly… hasn’t heard 90% of Jay or Jeff’s other records on this list… if the seminal collection of music that started it all, “No Depression,” is #11… well numbers 1-10 must be goddamned masterpieces. And since “Still Feel Gone,” “March 16-20 1992,” & “Anodyne” (the last two of those, in my admittedly biased opinion - other than being, as previously mentioned, a big UT fan for the previous albums & years beforehand - fail to touch their first two records although obviously not for a lack of effort) have all not been mentioned in Part One, it’s safe to assume you’d disagree with that assessment. And that’s ok man👍. While this is the first video of yours I’ve ever seen, you seem like a really cool, well informed & well educated guy - especially musically. So this very well just might your first time being wrong. Anyway, in all seriousness, thanks for taking the time to give such a criminally under promoted & underrated band (especially during those early years) so much of your time. Both guys have certainly been lauded & renowned since, of course. But no matter the genre, watching bands you were a big fan of “back in the day” get credit years, or even decades later just never feels as good as you’d hoped. Two other examples I can think of - from much different genres than UT inspired, would be the DC post punk outfit SoulSide, and the fathers of what unfortunately became known as Stoner Rock - Kyuss. Different genres, same significant influence in the future of similar music. As for Alt Country, considering the recent mind blowing success of Jason Isbell, you might even throw the DBT into that group. But since they are still active & continuing to release great records, I don’t want to sell that fantastic group short. Ok, rant over. I guess I’ll have to give #s 10-1 on your list another listen (or a first time spin for at least a few I’m guessing). On to Part Two. Despite the small disagreement on “No Depression,” well done Sir! 👏✌️

I totally share your dry sense of humor. What surprised me more was that I was already familiar with what is usually an esoteric clip to kick off your videos; I guess I consumed it as part of a UA-cam rabbit hole I went down while reading Michael Pollan's How To Change Your Mind back in 2018. I got really into Wall of Eyes as well. One caveat to others buying it: stay away from the blue variant! As much as I appreciate when they match the color variant to the cover art etc, this version was noisy and particularly bad on side 2 which had some of my favorite songs. I exchanged it (something I rarely do) for a standard black which was far superior. Just my experience. You definitely have me taking note of some of you're other featured artists. My recent most played new indie album is the new Mary Timony album Tame the Tiger (to go with your Tiger's Blood theme). My other recent favorite is that new RSD Wilco - The Whole Love Extended; an absolutely fantastically engineered, mixed and pressed new set...I dare say audiophile that rivals the two Rhino High Fidelity series records I've picked up this year; Television and Grateful Dead - American Beauty (what I've been referring to as "70s rock Tone Poets". What I'm trying to say is the Wilco RSD smokes...really fantastic pressing. Cheers!

A man after my own not terribly handy heart. The main reason I wouldn't get a U-turn is that I'd have to install the belt myself. Nope. Forget it. On a side note, though I'm a bit older than John, I'm not anywhere near as grey. However I've never been able to grow a decent beard so there's always trade offs. Great video.
