Practical Knife Reviews
Приєднався 30 чер 2020
Welcome to our channel, where siblings Henry (Ebola researcher, immunobiologist, and amateur knife maker) and Lara (recent college graduate with an eye for aesthetics) review knives, both vintage and modern production. We give you the perspectives of someone who knows knives inside and out, and someone who has used knives but frankly knows very little about them other than how they look and how they feel.
Going forward we will be looking both vintage and current production knives, both folding and fixed blades, both factory made and handmade. Thank you for joining us!
Feel free to leave comments under the videos, they are much appreciated!

Marbles Hunter's Axe (MR703) Review
Переглядів 6 тис.4 роки тому
A pretty decent small axe! Really great for splitting wood, adequate though not ideal for felling wood. Grain alignment was not ideal on this, requiring an epoxy repair and a homemade leather collar. Also, didn't come with a sheath, so I had to make do with a homemade upholstery leather sheath. Nonetheless, despite it's drawbacks, I am quite fond of this axe, and for $23 from SMKW (or a paltry ...

A SOG framelock...for $10??? No, it's not too good to be true, you can get the SOG Aegis FL in a clamshell pack from SMKW for $9.99. With a good heat treatment on an 8Cr13MoV blade and an all-steel construction, you won't find much better value for money on a hard-use knife. www.smkw.com/sog-aegis-framelock-clampack
Marttiini Condor Skinner Fixed Blade Knife Review
Переглядів 4,6 тис.4 роки тому
An inexpensive, stainless steel skinning knife from Finland, what more is there to say? It's comfortable, a good performer, and at a great price. The steel won't hold an edge particularly long, but it's a nice design and will sharpen back up very quickly. At the time of posting, it's on sale at SMKW: www.smkw.com/marttiini-skinner-black-rubber-handle

Vintage Marttiini Ilves (Lynx) Puukko Knives Review
Great overview and review. Cheers.
This was great. Had fixed centering before on some more modern knives but never on pinned slipjoints. Cheers mate.
I like these knives and have two older ones. - but they seem too heavy to carry in my pants pocket while a 2-layer Swiss Army Knife with the same tools feels much lighter.
Meni ovo lici da je 36.
Does this knife have a locking blade? I have one (found) and it does not lock. I didn't know if it was broke.
Don’t snap the blade off!!!
The 112 has never been called the Hunter, it is the Ranger. The genesis for the 112 was a murder with a Buck 110 of a sailor on the USS Ranger, based in San Diego, Buck's HQ. The Navy prohibited sailors from carrying a knife with a blade greater than 3 inches. Since the Navy guys were a huge part of Buck's market they made a knife to fit the new rules.
I have two of those. One of mine is also my grandfather’s and the other one I got in the late 1970s or maybe early 1980s. These are fantastic knives that hold an edge very well. I use mine for small game and deer cleaning. Even my newer one is as fantastic as my older one. It was made when the real Camillus New York company was still producing them. These are cherished knives of mine for sure.
It’s a family heirloom I know I did the same with my grandads but after that go buy a new one and start something new
Bull the vintage knife is the same as the new knife I’ve bought all the so called vintage ones and the handles are the same just zoom in and look close so it’s just about putting the word vintage on it but really your just paying more for a beat up old knife maybe you have to much room on your knife shelf or to much money in your bank account
The best way to patina a small to med sized blade is to use a Zeiss Lens Wipe, take it out of the package and let the alcohol cleaner to evaporate, then you use one of the crease lines in the wipe and fold it over the spine of the blade and cut it about 1/8-1/4" longer and wider than the blade, then pour out some apple cider vinegar in a dish and either drip it on the blade or use a dropper to saturate the wipe until its full of vinegar, smooth out the wipe gently with your finger to get out any air bubbles/ wrinkles out and let it sit on for an hr or two, all the while every 10-15min drip fresh vinegar over the blade, once the blade gets a light medium grey patina, stop, because the thicker patina the easier it will rub off, then you can further add a molting look, by dipping your finger in the vinegar and wiping the blade with your bear finger to where the droplets of vinegar cover the blade in a even spotty pattern, I do both sides of the blade at once and sit it on the counter top, let it sit for a few min (5min) then wipe it to change the pattern, you can keep wiping it with your finger until you get the spottiness/ evenness you desire, try to keep it even, you don't want big large puddles of vinegar to put a big spot on there when all the other molted pattern is smaller spots, then you can rinse it off, and gently wipe the blade with WD-40, it will help even everything out, then you can rinse/wash the blade to remove the WD-40, and use your finger to smear some light food grade mineral oil or oil from your forehead to make the pattern pop out, this sound grosser than it really is since we use our oily finger on the blade to wipe when we handle it. you see what I mean after you do it. You get good at forcing the patina to look real natural and even, and it'll look awesome
It's a hatchet with a longer handle. It's not made for falling trees. It's a 20 dollar hatchet. Stop with the unreasonable expectations.
Oldest know folding knife. See Halstatt knife. The Hallstatt knife dates to 500-600 BC. With the exception of stabbing and skinning a pruner will do anything you want with ease. There is a learning curve to getting used to this type of knife and to sharpen.
Knife crime has gone up, and so has the death toll. My advice is to break the knife up and stay away from the knife.
I have a vintage Camillus hawk bill #1 channel lock new York USA. It's in great condition can anyone tell me what it's worth? 7:32
Where the knife meets the handle it is scalloped to get the extrusions to adhere better. Unfortunately, this really weakens this point and any stress there and the blade will SNAP! Combine this with a half tang and you have solely a very light duty knife.
“That was fun” 🙄
Idiots at cold steel couldn’t make it with decent steel…dumb dumbs
11:57 If you get one with a brass, alu, resin or otherwise soft handle, the edge probably won't be dulled much by the handle.
You can glue someone Thin Plastik inside of the handle to Protection the Edge
You critizese this knife in your apartment with your wife? 😂Are you serios? 😂😂
I've got one, paid £17... that's about $20... can't believe the quality, its one of my favourite knives in my collection even if it's one of the cheapest... Great review. : -)
Wobble is one thing. However, I always thought that fixing off center was basically open the knife and push the blade in the appropriate direction--safely. Banging on the blade--I think not......
It’s just fine
I wish someone would do a video on how to strip wire with the TL-29
What frustrates me about the Dr. Knife is R.R. doesn't have a Dr. Knife with a spear point blade and a spatula in one knife available. All knives with spatulas have a clip point or sheep's foot blade. Bearhead and reserve only .
The most usefull video i have seen about opinel review! I was trying to see what size wqs a good size to buy and thank to this video i know the number 8 is the perfect to buy one for me and one to my dad! Congratulations for your work and dedication on this video!
The last one is not a Stockman it's a moose RR 1198
Best IMO for EDC is the N°08 Garden. Handle long enough for a 4 finger grip, but more slender than the main series for pocketability. Spearpoint blade for draw cuts, rather than the clip point in the main series.
I agree. I have carried regular no.8 for a long time (and still like it a lot) but the form factor on the garden is excellent and better in small pockets.
u all raised the price to 34 bucks yikes..
the wasp was a payed actor =D lol what a catch
Looks like a prefect neck knife to me.
The steel is not similar to the steel v. swiss army or spyderco uses, it is the steel they use on basic knives.
Best knife Cold Steel every produced and or cloned but they didn't have enough sense to produce it with a decent handle material and steel like AU8-10 or even S35VN steel. Sadly I bought expensive Grohmann knives.
Anyone try this. I have a bone case and it’s touching the liner. I know says no bone but it’s annoying and marking the blade
I’m with you on the vintage stuff, they just don’t make em like that anymore. Carbon steel vintage knives are my fav to collect, and use. I really like that you guys actually use your vintage knives. The first video I ever saw of yours, was when I bought an almost mint Camillus 23 large jack, and there you were, using that knife to do a review! A lot of collectors won’t use there stuff, and I’m guilty of that too an extent too. I tend to carry my rough Ryder/marbles knives cuz they’re made well, and don’t cost much. But when I do carry my vintage stuff, I mage sure to use it and not treat it as pocket jewelry. The model number on the Camillus is 99 I think.
.... thank you, thank you! ..... just fixed a favourite old knife that I had to peen to stop blade wobble. Its been slightly off centre since and now its perfectly in line down the middle :0)
Very helpful,thank you.
Excellent, thank you.
How did you patina it? Looks beautiful!
I have a Mora #1 and it feather sticks just great. It could be the piece of wood. I have 5 other Moras. Great value and high performance. 🎸🔪
Sharp review!
My friend these are the best knives ever. They were designed for people to finish and dial in to each individual, remember this is why you are not paying 200 or 400 dollars a set, in defense of Old Hickory.
When I bought my first Mora a #1/0 it came dangerously sharp right out of the box but I figured I'd give it a bit of help with a bit of stropping. My finest strop actually left small scratches on the blade I was using optical quality jewelers rouge (from an old Edmund Scientific reflector telescope kit I'd stolen from my dad)
If you put your camera on your right side you'll have better visibility
Ke no ke no ke para eso están los hachas, pero ke manía de kerer hacerlo todo con el cuchillo
This helps a lot. I have a boker that has an identical mechanism. Right now the only way to get the auxiliary blade out is to pry it up with a tool and I’m pretty sure it’s the alignment of the main blade. Probably gonna be stubborn to make it work but worth a shot
Of the carbon blades are oxidised, just strop them with a paste. I keep mine like that and it is kept shiny no problem
Your is blunt compared to how they come out the box, all mine are beyond razor sharp, only strop them with compound
Greetings from Czech Republic🖐️..try to buy fish folding knife..very nice choice of color and silver or gold coating knives..even with real silver or gold handle and real Czech garnet fish eyes..
