Flint Hills Trail w/ Dad and His E-Bike Days 3 & 4 - The Flash Floods & Osage City to Council Grove
Days 3 and 4 of our 4-day bike touring adventure along the Flint Hills Trail brought some unexpected challenges and memorable moments. On Day 3, we got stuck in Osawatomie due to torrential rain and flash flooding. It took us hours, but we finally found a public transportation service from Louisburg, KS, willing to help us out. Our driver was a really nice guy with plenty of great stories and life experiences. He drove us to our Day 3 destination in Osage City, where we stayed at another nice Airbnb and enjoyed a delicious dinner at Marilyn's.
On Day 4, we loaded up for the final leg of our journey from Osage City to Council Grove. We revisited my favorite section of the trail, the stretch from Bushong to Council Grove, right in the heart of the rolling Flint Hills. It’s my favorite place in the world to ride my bike, and it didn’t disappoint. We had an amazing time overall and can’t wait to get back out there and do it all again.

In March 2024, my brother and I embarked on a 12-mile hike from the Onondaga Trailhead of the Ozark Trail (located near Leasburg, Missouri) to Bass River Resort (in Steelville, Missouri). We tackled the OT segment known as Onondaga Caves to Butts Road. After a day of hiking, we camped overnight at Bass River Resort, where we had the entire campground to ourselves. The next morning, a canoe was ...

Hahaha! Love it!
Thank you! We all have a Gary in our lives who needs to see this.
O man, that is a great snapshot of what a lot of people have become. Living in bliss, believing anything you see, hear or even think is factual. Ignorance and fear
That is hilarious, unsure who Gary is but he has to know now. 😂😅
😂😂😂
Flint Hills? Kansas?
Yes the Flint Hills Trail in Kansas. It's a beautiful trail. ua-cam.com/video/Fpq3g4m9BaE/v-deo.htmlsi=5zLLwTarrHWerl1l
How did the routing go in Ottawa? I had to bypass up north and then come back down south.
We went completely off route when going through Ottawa to go to Smoked Creations, however I don't remember having any problems when going straight through.
@@lindenmoore so one of the last bridges over the creek must have been fixed/in-place. Now looking back in your vid, it was the last one you and your father stopped at with the benches.
There is still the short detour before you get to Ottawa. It is well established and there is signage. That section is supposed to be finished close to the end of the year. It was going to be finished soon but something about the railbed being raised, and bride footings now being too short , it is delayed. This would make the trail complete from Council Grove to Osawatomie.
Check out my latest video of this section of the trail. ua-cam.com/video/Fpq3g4m9BaE/v-deo.html
What month did you ride? Could I "credit card" the Katy trail?
You could definitely credit card the Katy. I reccomend planning ahead using the bikekatytrail.com trip planner. You can find places to stay, places to get food, public water and restrooms, etc. I have ridden the Katy in June and July...very hot and humid, but the Katy has a lot of tree cover.
That’s moulding to your anatomy, tighten the bolt 90 degrees every few months just to stop the sides sagging
Thanks! I have fallen in love with the saddle. More than 12k miles on it now.
I started binge watching so many videos of the Katy Trail because of a co-worker who is riding it in September with his uncle and brother. Now, I am planning on riding it myself next year during one of my weeks of vacation.
That is a perfect use of a week of vacation! If you want to make planning easy use this website: bikekatytrail.com/planner.aspx. I have used it to plan 3 trips on the Katy. Have fun and thanks for watching.
Spent many summers on the Cotoway and Huzzah. You picked the perfect time of year. My float friends and I did a Cotoway float in January of 1992. The floods left the river cluttered with all manner of debris, including the carcasses of cows in trees above the banks. The water was so clear we could see into the deep pockets. We found a hundred dollar bill caught on the bottom. For six idiots, five years or so outta high school, it paid for our entire trip. Thanks for the video, it brings back many great memories.
No problem and thanks for watching and commenting. Too bad we can’t all find 100 bucks every time we go on adventure. My wife might even encourage me to go on more trips. Haha.
I enjoy the videos, Your father is in good shape, considering the heat and humidity. you guys did really good. Camps sites are really nice.. hope i can do this with my wife. we in our 60"s+. I'm following your trip. learning and taking notes, helps since I never done something like you guys are doing. considering the time of the year. Thanks again.
Thank you! You can do it! Dad did a great job. If riding in the summer training for the heat is just as important as being physically ready. This summer we are hitting the Flint Hills Trail. Stay tuned!
Is bikepacking allowed on this trail?
Yes. It is. This is also just one section of a much longer trail called the Ozark Trail.
Wow, Jake is getting older. I bet they both are.
The best video of Wichita I have seen, and the choice of song- Perfect!
Thank you!
Exactly, I have the same. So I your butt is also asymmetric 😂
Hahaha. Yep. Probably why all other bike seats that I have tried don’t feel good…they are too symmetric.
Awesome trail and the sun came out finally too!
I really love it out there. I had admired the flint hills from a car driving down the highway when leaving Kansas on trips, and when I found out there was a trail that brought you right into the middle of it I had to go there.
I'm gonna ride the Katy Trail in September, can't wait 😊
Have fun! It’s a beautiful trail and community of people. This summer my dad and I will be riding the beautiful Flint Hills Trail.
@@lindenmoore where is this trail? I've never heard about this trail.
@@FollowThomas, the Flint Hills Nature Trail is a rail trail that is currently developed from Council Grove, KS to Osawatomie, KS. The developed section is about 94 miles long. My favorite part of the trail is the section from Council Grove to Allen. You are riding right in the middle of the beautiful rolling flint hills in that area. The surface is similar to the surface on the Katy on most of the trail. However, there are some small sections that were volunteer built, and they can be a bit less consistent. I made a video a few years ago, and it is in the last few videos of a series I made about connecting the Katy and the Flint Hills Trail to create a longer week long adventure. Fix your asymetric butt.
Helmets? I’ve had too many MtB crashes not to protect my head!
Yeah. I agree. I always have mine on. Dad was overheating so he took his off that day.
Nice gravel ride 😊
I love it out there!
Wow I have never seen so many trees across the trail. Bad timing with that.
I seem to have bad timing. I typically ride the trail in June and July and the weather can be unpredictable. I have crossed down trees on all three of my trips. Two years ago there were downed trees from Machens to Rocheport. 3 years ago there was a flood and plenty of downed trees.
I see your dad's riding the same bike I used on the Katy: sirrus X 4.0, 1 by 11 druvetrain.
Yes! It’s a great bike. Sturdy and light.
don't ya just hate context.

this was one of my favorite trails here in Kansas. hope you had a great time out there
I love it out there! It is so unique for Kanas. I also love the Flint Hills as well though. We had a blast. I even went back for a winter overnighter by myself. Thanks for watching!
Almost there!
Haha! Almost. My dad and I are coming up with our plan to attack it again. Enjoy the trail!
My son and I are planning a Katy trail trip in May. We will the son and the 58 year old Dad. Enjoy watching your trip. Thanks for sharing.
Have fun, and thanks for watching! It will be a memory that will last forever. My dad and I were just on a ride and discussing getting back out there ourselves. He wants to try out the hotel to hotel experience (no camping).
Xan you tell me about the bikes you used?
Yes. I am riding a Surly Bridge Club. I had 2.35 in hybrid type tires on it. My dad was on a Specialized Sirrus 4.0 with 36(ish)mm tires.
Hiiiii i went to the Circus yesterday
Congratulations to your Dad ❤ inspiring
Thanks, again. It’s a beautiful trail.
Congratulations 🎊 👏 💐 Enjoyed
Thanks for watching! We had a blast!

Thanks for watching! This trail is in Missouri, USA. It is a trail built on old railroad. Very flat and about 386 km long. Its a very beautiful place!
Cảm ơn đã xem! Con đường này ở Missouri, Hoa Kỳ. Đó là một con đường được xây dựng trên nền đường sắt cũ. Rất bằng phẳng và dài khoảng 386 km. Đó là một nơi rất đẹp!
The Katy Trail! When I visit home again, I definitely want to ride some of it! 🥰 Thanks for the video!
No problem! Thanks for watching and commenting. I don’t live near it but I am lucky and my mom lives near Hermann and my brother lives near St. Louis. You should definitely ride some of the Katy, it is the best.
I cant count how many rides Ive done there. Ive been utilizing sections of it even before it was developed. The politics of it still irk some. Ive know a retired farmer who doesnt even live anywhere near the trail and he acts like its a personal issue for him. Im glad you and your father had a good time.
We had a blast and thanks for watching. The history of the trail and those who have opposed is interesting. We have the same sort of thing going on here in Kansas with the Flint Hills Trail. It seems there are a lot of hold outs and as the trail is built most people come around.
The trail marker. A symbol of fate
Bro you sound like the this Roche marching 🤷♂️
Hahaha. You are right. I am not very graceful. More like bigfoot.
That's a 2000 year old trail
I love it out there. Beautiful place!
Which Elk River?
This is the Elk River Trail near Independence, KS. One of Kansas’s hidden gems.
@@lindenmoore thank you. Looks like a nice hike. We have an Elk River here in Humboldt County, California.
Why is it actually satisfying though?

Thanks! It really is!
