A horrible dusty American narrator gives an absolute trailer park vibe when describing this property. Ghastly presentation. Would be better ipshiwn in silence or either soft period music . Her description are childish.
I'm from MS, USA. In the 1990s I bought a Country Victorian. It was in good livable shape, so moved right in. I had covered, with the realtor, major things we might have to worry about, like roof, plumbing, electrical. They all had been updated within last 3 yrs. I loved it, even tho years later had to sell it due to divorce. I learned not to try to do too many things at once. Make a list! I went room by room. You have many, many here willing to help y'all in your wonderful journey! I'm sure you'll find France friends willing to help also!
Awh, thank you!! I'm sure that home was a labor of love. I will try to take it slow. Finances will probably keep it slow going too haha. But it'll be interesting! 😃
Your garden area is lovely! Before you begin pulling things out, there's "an app" for those "I don't know what this is." Lol. There are several plant apps, just aim your camera and it will tell you what it is and how to take care of it.🥰 Can't wait til Spring!
Yes I will definitely do that! Thank you! I'll probably make myself a map and write it all down too! 😁
I've never been to France, but you're living a dream for me! I love the history. Your chateau has SO much to work with. I hope you will take time to research before doing any work. I'm sure the kids would be happy to help!🥰 😅 I will be following your adventures! Congrats.
Awh thank you!! I do know I purchased it from a builder who loved there 25 years. I think he changed a lot! Other than some flooring, fireplaces, and the fireplace backplate... I'm not sure what's original! I'd sure love to know more about the whole place. 🤩 Thank you for your support!!
Are those two columns in that room structural or can you remove them?
I'm REALLY hoping they're decorative and I can remove them 😁.
@@LetsBuyAChateau I agree. They seem so out of place. They do not look original so I am thinking they are decorative. Let's hope, huh? :)
@@lindamounts2193 Yes, definitely hoping so! It won't be one of the first things we do... But it is on my list to get to eventually!
Really questioning the reason you moved to France. You sound unhappy. Europe is not the US!
It was just a rough day. And I was missing my family!
I wonder did you indicate you were pulling in ?, thats all I can think, anyway just ignore the honking just someone with a bad temper. Thanks for the video
I thought I used my blinker. Maybe I didn't. I was really happy to simply be off the road LOL. I'm going to take lessons to grow some confidence. 🙂 Thank you for watching!
Is it a Rose of Sharon?
Yes! You are right! That's what I couldn't think of. My jet-legged brain couldn't put it all together haha
When will you all be coming and staying? I think one you are permanently there it will be so much easier for you to figure things out and get things done together. Best of luck!
Oh, I agree with you completely. Life will be so much easier. We only get short bursts of time to go over and accomplish what we can. Will be there full-time, likely next June.
When we were in Italy years ago I thought "HONK" was their middle name.LOL.Mel stop worrying over ever thing it will make you sick. The shower if it were me i would do the cheapest way i could and when you are all living there rip it out water proof and tile the shower. There may be hidden problems from time past you cannot see now. Remember Mel you are brave to be there on your own it will get better but you are worrying yourself so much you must stop. By the way sweep the leafs off the steps can get slippy when wet do it off video as great as you are one thing at a time. As the Royals say "Stay calm and carry on" Until next time take care.
You are so sweet. Thank you. I appreciate it! By the time I shot this video I was feeling a little down. I was missing my family and feeling not as accomplished as I wanted. Yet. I really did accomplish a lot! Yes I will continue to carry on🙂 and it will get easier no doubt. The honking, LOL.... When I go to New York City they honk like crazy and it just makes me laugh. It must be like that in Italy too!
You are very brave to be in a foreign country all by yourself not knowing the language AND driving on top of that! I lived in Mexico many years ago & my then husband left me alone a lot and it was very challenging to say the least. I was so glad to have had a store ( family owned ) just downstairs so I rarely had to to purchase anything all by myself lol 🤷 I can hardly wait to see how you furnish your new home as that is one of my favorite things to do when I move to a new place; I find it to be a welcome & very pleasant challenge- anyway thx for having me along I had fun especially at the Emmaus ( loved the rush seat dining chairs that's what I want for my existing dining table ) 🤔
Thank you so much for your comment! I do know the language. But I also need to be more confident in it. We are much stronger than we think 🙂. You have accomplished a lot and I'm hoping to grow that strength and looking forward to the future. If making a change was easy, everyone would do it!
I loved the stroll through town, how cute. I hope you have solved the leak. The view in your backyard with the steeple is breathtaking, what a nice place to sit and relax (as long as you don't look at the stairs). lol
Oh my goodness, thank you so much! Yes those stairs absolutely freak me out LOL. I will show a lot more strolls through town. I think the one I post next week will be exploring my own Village. I hope you enjoy it! Thank you for following along 🙂
I love how you are being open and honest about everything you are experiencing. It’s all very interesting. If you pretend nothing is frustrating, I will know you are lying. 🤣😂 Also, thank you for purchasing nothing in the shop. 🤐 🤣 Your chateau is too special for just anything. I don’t like yellow either, but I do like the yellow shower tiles. They don’t seen as bright. I love a smooth buttery yellow. ❤
Thank you so much for your comment! And I am so glad you appreciate my honesty. It would be easy to be fake and pretend everything is great. But yes, I'm a open and honest, wear my heart on my sleeve kind of person. Just to be honest, I don't mind the yellow shower tiles either 🙂 But the yellow wall? Yeah, that's going hahaha. Thank you for following along!
@ You are welcome! Do you know how I knew you were an honest person? You got me on the spiders - nix them! I said, “Yes, she is a truly transparent person. I am going to love this channel.” 👍🏻
@@meri8746 Ha! Awwwhhhh. Love that! People keep telling me they're good the for nature and serve a purpose. Ah, that's a big nope for me! :) Thank you for all your support. It means a lot.
As u get to know the area it be so much earlier . Please u found whats is making the leak . Something where nice in the second hand place im sure u find more places to check out Google may help . Take care
Thank you so much. You are absolutely right! Appreciate it.
Don’t let people discourage you and say you’re complaining, being there alone, takes a lot of guts, and as we know, Midwestern women know how to get. S**T done .
Awwhhh thank you!!! I appreciate that ❤️. I'll always just be the real me 😊💖
Mel get yourself a blue zone pass. It allows you two hour parking in any blue zones. Green zones are 15 minutes and you don't need anything to park in the green spots.
Ahhhhhh. I don't know about the parking zones!! What? 😲
@@LetsBuyAChateau so when you drive through the main streets in towns around you,, you will see parking spots with green stripes - 15 minute spots. White stripes are regular parking and lucky if you can get one - park as long as you want. Blue striped parking spots are blue zoned two hour parking. Go to your nearest town Marie or tourist information stop and buy a blue zone pass. That's about it. Good luck. The pass works all around france except around Paris
@@miket7226 Oooohhhhh! Okay. That's good to know! Thank you. I hadn't heard this before. You're the best!
@@LetsBuyAChateau BTW I love your place. Nice area. Good luck with it.
@@miket7226 Thank you :)
You need to clean out the bottom fuss filter almost after every wash. Its really dangerous if they are full and yes they cause leeking. Same with the dryer. You empty the water container, the fuss collector inside the door and the bottom fuss collector. If not clean the machines can get in fire or leak. Leave the doors open when you fly back to the USA. Why are those plates so important to change? I think there are other things that are more urgent. Those plates on the wall are older and probably not compatible with your new ones.
I did learn about the dryer and have been emptying that each time. Very different, but I suppose it'll become habit. The plates weren't a big deal... I mostly wanted to change the gross skin oil stained one. Grossed me out. So I thought it'd be easy to grab a few extra. Honestly... I wanted a simple task I could say, "I accomplished that". Gah. And I didn't 🤷♀️.
You defenitly need a new faucet. That will help a lot. Choose one that you can use when renovating the bathroom. You are in danger soakin th wooden stucture behind the tiles or the wooden floor/ beams.
Yes, that faucet is a disaster!! Lovely, right? I want to get that done asap. I hate to see water anywhere it's not supposed to be 🙌
I moved from a town with a great Emmaus to one with the worst one in France, they have nothing but stuff that belongs in a dumpster !
Oh gosh! That's unfortunate! Where was the good one? I'm being told to go to the one in Limoges. I think I'm about an hour or so away.
@@LetsBuyAChateau Limoges is a good one. I used to go to the one in Perigueux, now I live in Cognac. I might go tomorrow to find some dog bowls, I did buy 8 curtain rods with rings and filials for 20 euros but honestly there is not much. Much of my furniture came from other Emmaus and before I moved I bought two huge old shop counters to use the wood for kitchen tops and I bought a wuite marble coffee table to use also as a counter top. I also buy large pictures, often posters, with glass, just for the glass to cut down for other frames. My curtains are going to be made from 7 metres of amazing William Morris heavy linen, gorgeous, paid 6 euros for the roll ! Good luck.
@@TheFiown Oh wow! You have nabbed some great deals! Amazing. Those curtains are going to be gorgeous!
The leak is behind the wall. I think you need to call in a pro. Sorry.
😭 I definitely don't want mold. Might need to.
Your negative attitude about everything kind of ruins this. It's depressing. You might work on a presentation without constant negative comments.
Ha! Okay. I was probably tired. 🤪 I always appreciate feedback.
To be honest, the more I think about it, I think I was really missing my family. I was getting frustrated with not accomplishing as much as I had hoped.... Sorry, just being real about the ups and downs of the process. ❤️
You may have to open up the wall on the other side of the shower to find the leak. That is cheaper than re-tiling.
Good point!
If you don’t have a water softener, chances are calcification is the culprit in your pipes. Use grout- NOT CAULK!!!! Use a spray Sealer you can get at Action or Brico for now. Don’t use caulk which will be difficult to remove later. Rose of Sharon is the plant. If you’re near Limoges, better Emmaus there. Emmaus have some good ones but some are horrible. Amazon France or Centakor have shower caddies pretty cheap. You need your family there and to actually “live” France. It’s very difficult to do it like you’re doing it.
There is an old nasty looking water softener in our basement. I would love to have a new one that actually functions 🙂. Definitely spoiled like that - I've always had one. And I understand it's better for appliances. Thanks for the advice about the sealer and the grout! Yes Rose of Sharon! I was still a little jet lagged haha... You're something about hearts or love and Sharon 🤣. I might sound like a complete idiot on camera sometimes, but you'll never get fakeness out of me. I will definitely look for a shower caddy online! Was trying to be good and support local business but good grief! And yes, I am quite anxious for living in the house full time. It was important that we let our kids finish out the school year in the US. But as soon as that's done....off we go! 😁
Good on living in France year-round. We’re rooting for you! It’s rewarding and it does come with its unique challenges, but it just took us about 1 month to get our sea legs and we’ve never been happier.
Have you discovered Centrakor? It’s like a World Market in US. Excellent prices and I’m sure there’s one near you. They are ubiquitous in France- like Workd Markets or Target in US. Also, when you want to buy appliances, Conforama and Boulanger usually have best prices. January is usually sales month. They only have two sales months a yr in France to prevent the “big box” stores from killing the mom & pop stores. But you can get great deals on appliances in January at both those stores. Good luck to you. Breathe. It gets easier and sometimes they just honk to be annoying🤷🏻♀️
@@aliciabaylina6275 That's great to know! And thanks so much :)
Love your garden ❤ enjoyed your stroll in town. Good luck with leaks, trip home, driving lessons, scary stairs and future Emmaus or brocante trips !
Thank you so much! Oh gosh, I really appreciate your support. And thank you for being kind when I make myself rather vulnerable ❤️.
6:12 Welcome to the cheesy play on words for hairdressers saloon names(salon de coiffure) : "L'Hair du temps" from French "L'air du temps" . Être dans l'air du temps is an expression meaning "to be trendy or fashionable" By the way, the C letter at the end of "Le Blanc" is silent. Blanc is the word for white and the c is there because the feminine of blanc is blanche. There are a lot of silent letters in French, specially at the end of words. It's part of the difficulty of learning the language.
I do speak French as a matter of fact! Of course since I was speaking English and wanted people to understand what I was saying so I said it like that. I majoree in French in college in fact.... It's a fun language 🙃.
Le blanc (c is silent) departement de l'indre, the river name is la creuse I think, its a medieval city, like most of that region, people think medieval looks like the medieval châteaux in uk...but france kept most of it cities and villages identity...which means that city and it center was active since the middle ages, probably from roman time too, the château Naillac is the attraction 😊. The stairs r cemented, they r not original to the building at all...clearly a recent addition. Don't mind people honking 😅, sometimes they r helping u out when u are parking, sometimes its a way calling somebody and sometimes they just honk🤷♀️. I like yellow😅maybe not like that in a bathroom but yellow is sunshine 💛
Oh yes, I know the c is silent... But I wanted to make sure the Americans and English speaking people understood what I was saying.... 🙃. Yeah not sure what to do with those darn stairs... They're a mess. And oh gosh, you are right. Yellow is a cheery lovely color! But I'm burned out by it lol... I just repainted a 5,000 sqft house that was ALL yellow. Walls, trim, ceiling. Crazy stuff 🤣
L Indre est le département de mes ancêtres, mais plus vers Châteauroux 😊
Ahhh! Oui! C'est jolie!! 😀
❤
😍
BEST WISHES TO YOU
Thank you. I appreciate that!
🍎 Fabulous, sunny, blue skies day in our part of the world! About evicting your friendly bugs! Unfortunately you can't evict bugs in France, because there are too many rivers and streams around. #2. 99.9% of people plant roses and shrubs against the building of the house and when it rains, because most people don't use gutters for the water to go elsewhere, it creates moisture against the house and no one loves moisture more than bugs and rodents and geckos. Most of all there are no window screens on the houses in France, so as long as you live in France, they are going to be your best friend inside your house and outside your house! As we said your new house is nice, it needs a lot of work and because it's so old, you always need to save because every year it's going to be something new you have to fix. We definitely don't like the fenced in walls of the courtyard, as it makes the house looks as if though it's a jail or a hospital or a facility of some kind. It makes the courtyard look a little too quiet and unfriendly. Don't want to say depressing, but we must because I can see adults getting used to the secluded walls, but there is no way teenagers are going to feel happy about secluded walls. We must give it to you bluntly for the sake of your kids. We have lived on five acre properties three times in the last 20 years and the last property we decided to sell as my daughter was getting in her teens and I was getting tired of the seclusion. So as time goes on when the kids come back, you must keep asking them questions here and there every year and watch that they're not getting depressed. Since you know it's a secluded property, then you will know why they're not so happy. As I can tell a little with the one or two videos, but can't seem to figure out the answer for the secluded fence walls. Hope it doesn't make you depressed either since no one can see the beauty of the courtyard, only if they're invited in. We love big properties too, but it has to show for others to enjoy as well, or else what's the point if no one can appreciate the beauty just the owners. Bye for now, Ciao!🌴
Thanks for your insight!
OK, you have older switch covers that they don’t make anymore. You’ll have to find those OR, just CLEAN the darned things. They are retro and fit inwith the home’s period. As a viewer, you’re really concentrating on things that don’t matter and not on things that do. I know you’re scared and afraid to drive, but you were courageous enough to move to France and the roads are magnificent- better than most roads I ever drove in the U.S. Also, you can search for and download any manual for any appliances you have in ENGLISH. Because I assure you, before the UK shot itself in the head and voted for Brexit, they were a part of EU and those same appliances would have been sold there. When we moved to France we focused on painting every room to give it a “fresh” look. Wall plates were number 53,278 on our list. You need to your use your time in France wisely. Familiarize yourself with the stores you can source stuff from. Good luck!
Oooohhhhh older switch covers? Of course. Blah! I'm only focusing on the small things at the moment because we're not living there full time yet. I wanted to take small steps so my kids would feel comfortable with their rooms most of all. Believe me, I have a big legit to do list of the big jobs. Those will come. Honestly, we just want somewhere to sit when we're at the house right now 😂. And since we're Americans, we get so little vacation time.... We do what we can while we can. After winter, were there full time. Then it's ON! 🙌😁
Keep the old covers and just buy a can of paint to get the colour you want
That is a genius idea!!
Glad you had the phone win and the past bank account win. I wonder if having a dehumidifier in the house might help with the mold issues. I imagine the stone retains the moisture from outside. Does the house have air conditioning? That would be something I would not be able to do without. All the best for your new life in France. You got this and just think that you will be helping countless others like me who hope to follow in your footsteps with a move to France.
Oh My goodness, thank you for the comment! I definitely have been thinking about a dehumidifier. I think that might be a great investment. A few of them! There is not air conditioning. I'm definitely curious to see what a summer is like there. I come from Nebraska where it's very hot and very humid! I'm curious to see what this heat will feel like... Certainly it can't be so bad? But I'm definitely a fan of keeping out the sun and heat as much as possible. Thank you for following along, and I hope I can be of help to you!
@@LetsBuyAChateau Winter are dry and mild where we are. Think you’re near the Charente?? If so, a tad more humid but not a wet, bone-chilling Winter
@@aliciabaylina6275 Near the Charente... The house is in the Vienne. Just slightly north and west.
If you can’t parallel park you shouldn’t be driving. Also, moving to France you should anticipate that it isn’t going to be the same as the USA on many levels including the price you pay in Reno stores and you pay for garbage in your taxe d’habitation regardless of having a can or not.
Oh yes I've paid a garbage bill already 😊. Parallel parking in a place I'm not comfortable with yet and in a rented car that is not what I'm used to driving... Yeah, I'm definitely taking things slow! If I can park safely and take a nice walk... Where's the harm in that???
The leak may be caused by the pump filter (accessible from door at bottom) being partially blocked, there is normally a plug that needs to be unscrewed to clean it. N.B Water will come out if you remove plug to clear, about one litre of water. Tip leave the washing m/c door and filler open after use to dry out and this will stop any mould.
I will check that plug for sure. Laundry got more complicated, ha... Fun! But good to know! I'll check that out. Thank you!
Looking good. Reckon a cat got a decent meal from your pigeon. What are you planning to work at when you make the move?
I think the cat must have! I'll have to keep an eye out for it. 😻

Surely you want to be having baguettes each day and real espresso coffee🤣🤣

You need to start calling it your garden not a back yard🤣🤣
We'll see if I can pick that up 🤣. Maybe eventually!
Can you not use google translate
I didn't think of it right away! Forgot technology that can help was sitting right there 🙈.
that is your filter needs to be emptied out but put an old towel down because it will run with a bit of water then empty the filter and put it back. then it should not leak.
Good to know! Thank you! Oh fun 🙃. Good tip about having a towel there too. Thank you!
Oh boy. I don’t see how you’re gonna make it there. Remember Google and UA-cam are your best friends for diy.

Keep a journal on the highs and pitfalls, dates put everything in it. You can return to a month to confirm stuff for yourself. Spiders i have a spider roar do i ever but i have a small hand vacuum always charged to help me stop shouting.I think you are doing great you are living in a big house on your own trying to sort everything out and that is not easy, When it comes to buying for the house not a suitable price look somewhere else. As for the driving well a new country on the roads does test your confidence, so what it happens,it tested my confidence when i moved to Australia many years ago. There are many lessons ahead for you, but you in the future may be able to advice someone else. So do not stress remember you are only humane . Take care chin up you go girl you got this. The bottom of the washer has a filter that needs cleaned aprox every three months and you should leave front door open after using until it's dry so you won't get mold.. clean the washer on clean setting every month as well.

Why didn’t you take a sample to hardware store take the old ones in save you time and money?
Because I didn't know it'd be that complicated 🫤.
We have high ceilings and I use a painters extension pole with an attached cobweb brush to clean spider webs away. I bought them both at the same time to make sure they will screw in together. I can confirm this is so much easier from the ground than going up and down stairs.
Ooooooh! That's a great tip!! 👍 Thank you!!
Yay for the phone sim, take all the wins when they come (we were happy enough with Free that we use them for Fiber internet as well). I hear you on the brico prices. They seemed crazy at first, but I’ve gotten used to them over time. (If you can wait for the “soldes” times, two periods in summer / winter where stores are allowed to have big sales, you’ll find some markdowns) .
Ah good tips!! Thanks! And glad to know I made a solid choice with Free! Appreciate it 👍
