Print film reminds me of digital, its neutral and requires post processing to come to life. I shoot slide because i like to be done with the photo when the shutter is.
So the actual exposure is zone 5? I understand the concept but applying it independently is not immediately clicking. Dark< mid< bright and plot them , then interpolate for zone 5 . Do we use more zones for films that have wider latitude? I have read Ansel Adam’s books, but not recently.
very useful video. Thank you bro for making this
Can I ask why you shoot until it says 0? Sorry totally new to cameras
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS SIMPLE!
thank you very much for your explanations !
I am thinking of a Hassleblad. In the end, I went ahead with my second M camera although I already have the M11. Anyway, the Hassleblad is still calling me, my AD is still saying the 907X is the one to go, I would prefer the X2D.
Clear and helpful - great examples - thank you! 🙏
2:21 is this scratched buttons on the middle frame?
how about using the spot meter function in a digital camera to replace the meter? thx!
Excellent video Ryan!!! The best explanation I have seen on UA-cam about the Zone System. Like the way you simplify it and clearly explain, Keep the good work!!!!
I bought a used x1d and have the 45mm p that will be the only native lens I get. The rest will be adapted. That is what if found to work
dude the window idea is fire. super creative way to spotlight what drew you to take the photographs in the first place.
thank you so much! this window idea was not sure when i started this project. when it become more clear as i go through 🥹

you got my follow after this video for what it’s worth! absolutely amazing and helpful explanation of the zone system. eager to try it out with my next photos!
so glad to hear that it is helpful! let me know if you have any other subject to know 🥹
@@RYANPARKPHOTOGRAPHY will do brother!
You did it! The zone system was always easy enough to understand, but this is the first video I've seen that also explains metering in both an easy and an instantly applicable way. Beautiful work!
When you did the pause i learnt so much
so glad to hear that!
@@Liampanto yeah i found that part really helpful too!
Nicely explained!
thank you 🥹
I think you did great job. Thanks for sharing this knowledge ;) and definitly thans for explaining it in such a easy way ;)
thanks for watching!
The best camera is the one you use.
🙏
you can put Hasselblad H lenses (used). They are very good and way more cheap.
i was thinking to do that as well but couldnt find lens locally 😢 i still love the photos that i made with with camera🥹
@@RYANPARKPHOTOGRAPHY You can find the lenses at MPB.
Definitely

Ignore the critics. If you can afford it, it's legal, and you want to do it, why not? All the arguments you mentioned others gave you on why not to do 8"x10" equally apply to 4x5, medium format, or film in general. What they are really saying is "stay with the crowd," "don't be bold, unique, or independent," and "you need to confirm my bias by making the same decision I did, and everyone else made." Whether cameras, cars, pistols, or bows, I don't care what the sheeple are doing. I'll learn, listen/read those more experienced, take classes, experiment, and then decide what makes the most sense for me, in my situation, given my preferences. I am contrarian by nature. If I see everyone moving in one direction, as if by command, I want to know why -- and I am very skeptical and wary of all the cheerleaders and touts urging me to join the crowd "faster, faster" while refusing to answer basic questions, "why that way?" or "why not this other way?" I am not saying everyone is your enemy or giving you bad advice -- frequently they discourage those they care most about from taking risks. That's a herd mentality. You have to decide whether to stick to the herd or strike out on your own. Best wishes.
Awesome camera. I have one preserved and on its way this week. I wanted to know what type of shutter release cable should I look for to work with the camera?
thanks! for shutter release cable, i used lots of cheap one before. but now i used gape brand shutter release.
What a fantastic tutorial, including a do-it-yourself exercise. I stopped the video at the last shot of the Sydney Opera House and came to the same conclusion. I was slightly confused when the final pic frame read "Kodak Ecktar 100," but the slide said Fuji Velvia. I reasoned it was a stock frame. As my film photography progresses, I've been selecting the middle tone of a scene and taken the suggested meter settings from that one spot. Although I've read about the zone system many times, I think this is the first time I've seen it practically applied. This was certainly the first time I tried to apply it (in an exercise), and this is a huge advance. From one point of view, my photos are not overexposed or underexposed, the elements within the composition I wanted to capture were over or underexposed. Subscribed. Thank you.
thanks for watching! great to hear that! and also lots of people taking great photos without any problem even though not really know much about exposure. But knowing what we are exposing for is a huge advantage as a photographer! Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for the great explination! But for me is one question left... I need to think a lot to understand this... If you use the zone system in the field how do you approach? Do you have like a writing block and write everything down? Do you do it in your head? At the moment i can't imagine using this system without writing something down :D
it sounds quite complicated, but it is quite straight forward when you used to it :) it is about what you wanna exposure in your scene!
@@RYANPARKPHOTOGRAPHY thank you very much! Now I just need a spot meter! 😅 I need money! 😅
First time shooting large format - and you feel like you have to make youtube video... Strange generation...
it is strange, right?
I think, for somebody already well-versed in photography with YT channel, recording their journey and mistakes is very useful for those of us on the same path or considering taking that path. A major reason so many experts fail at training and educating is they've become so immersed in the subject they can't communicate well with those just learning. Worse, they take for granted key, fundamental steps they long ago ingrained in habit and forgot. He's not misrepresenting himself, as many YT channels do, he's upfront about being new to large format.
Just follow your passion, Ryan and ignore the negativity from others.
thanks Robin! will do 🤞👋
Good to see you back on YT. 8x10 is a great choice. I’m sure you’ll love it and create magic with it.
thanks matt! i will just enjoy 🥹

Good on you man! How hard is it to get some Velvia for that bad boy?
Thanks Kyle! I really want to get velvia, but it seems like extremely hard..

Hello Ryan, How are you enjoying your large format journey? I am close to beginning my own journey, and I’m looking for equipment.
i have been really enjoying, and I havent made any video for quite a while but i just started 8x10 :)
@@RYANPARKPHOTOGRAPHY !!! 8x10 !!! That must be like a zillion megapixel negative - just to mix my metaphors !!! 👍. If you have pics to share, I’m in 😊
@@reusedisland1904 i will make video soon! but my photos are in my instagram in general 🥹
Leica is made of brass and gives a false sense of security. I'm researching rangefinder alternatives because I ultimately find Leica to be lacking for the prices and praise it receives. Maybe i will commit to the Nikon S cameras. Nikon and Canon were producing better optics than Leica as far back as the fifties . Seeing the photos I'm reminded why I don't care for Leica glass. However this is all objective and I'm still sifting through different rangefinders. I was hoping to hear some praise for the CLE but yea it does look like a boring camera to shoot. The Leica would feel like a luxury car in comparison .
Nikon and canon rangefinder cameras are great for sure, and nikon s cameras are so beautiful as well. One of the thing about nikon s series i found is that lenses are hard to buy in general. but otherwise, they are amazing cameras 😀
Planning trip to Wyoming with my Hasselblad. Thanks for posting this. Helpful.
enjoy 🥹
If you still have it, I'll buy it.
already sold it while i was making this video 😅
Perfect explanation
thanks!!
i think you can't compare two too differents rolls as velvia and portra, velvia is an inversible film and portra is a negative film, Velvia was made for Vivid and saturated colors , Portra was balanced for Skin with soft colors wich is more "green", but obviously everybody use them as they want
This is very helpful, thanks! As a newbie what do you recommend I do in the field? I feel like this makes sense when I see you do it. Would you recommend writing down the exposure times?
writing down exposure is good as it gives reference. But i usually take photos of setting and view as well 🥹
It would have been interesting to get the exact same shot. But very obvious is the highlights in digital are not forgiving any mistakes. The clouds on the film still had contours and in digital there is a grey mass. But I am sure with AI we can solve such problems with a one button process very very soon…or we can replace the entire sky….lol😂😂😂
By far the best explanation of the zone system I've watched. Well done, great video
thanks for watching!

What a wasted opportunity! You are obviously not aware of the unique feature of this camera. .. the design feature that separates it from the others that copy the 6x12 roll-film concept. .. and I am not going to tell you.
haha thank you 😂
