Half Peak - 92/100 - Double the Challenge
After climbing the Jones Group from the Cataract Gulch Trailhead, we were well positioned to set out for Half Peak the next day. Half Peak is a Centennial Peak (Highest 100 in Colorado) located near the Continental Divide. I have looked forward to climbing this one ever since its steep cliffs caught my eye while hiking the CDT. To make for a more adventurous loop, we added on Quarter Peak, which proved to be a challenge with plenty of loose rock and some delicate scrambling to reach the top. With the dramatic north face of Half Peak in sight, we made a gradual traverse around the cliffs to reach an idyllic plateau between the two peaks. The steep gully climb up to the summit really got my attention and reminded me how long it had been since I'd done much scrambling. From the summit, we descended the standard south ridge, which was an entertaining meander along a narrow spine with cliffs on either side. We hit the CDT briefly before returning down the Cataract Lake Trail back our campsite. Another varied and rewarding day spent deep in the alpine ocean of the San Juans.

Jones Mountain - 91/100 - A Classic 13er Ridge Traverse
Переглядів 11021 день тому
When my accident and surgery derailed my summer, I was forced to give up a lot of things, including my goal of completing the Colorado Centennial Peaks (Highest 100) in the year of 2024. I knew that sustained scrambling and climbing were going to be off the table for the rest of the year. But after a couple months of recovery and rehab, it occurred to me that I might just be able to climb a cou...

For my next Nolan's 14 scouting trip, I was eager to explore the rarely traveled route up and over Mount Princeton, one of Colorado's most prominent mountains. I was thankful to share this trip with good friends who live in the area. From the town of Alpine, we climbed the long southwest ridge and enjoyed the 3rd class scrambling and the unique position it offered. Our descent off the northeast...

My third scouting trip for Nolan's 14 was meant to be a big one. Starting from Blank's Cabin, I hoped to go from Shavano to Tabeguache, drop down to Browns Creek, climb Antero, and camp on the Colorado Trail before completing the loop. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans. Cold wind and low clouds were shrouding the summit, and I never got a glimpse of nearby Tabeguache. Even if I could s...

Colorado has a few 14ers that are easily paired up and connected, like Belford and Oxford or Grays and Torreys. Missouri and Huron, however, are separated by a deep drainage around Clohesy Lake. Nevertheless, the Nolan's 14 route links them with a dramatic line that connects the rarely-traveled West ridge of Missouri with the rugged and undeveloped East side of Huron. This is one of the more ch...

made my first run through of all 14 in a summer back to back to back, couldn’t even dream of doing this line. My teacher Mr. Nolan at Manitou Springs Highschool unfortunately lost his legs on a 14er, I don’t think there’s any relation but I’m pretty sure it was on a sawatch range 14er as well… always scared the crap out of me. these mountains are absolutely insane to link up just as you said because of having to descend into a deep basin then re-ascending the next peak over and over and over. Goodluck man.

@mgoboski it's less dangerous than those, not as loose. Routefinding is key - know where you want to be and look for cairns. I'd wear a helmet as the goats can kick down rocks. It's a good one, steep and scenic!

As a local, I have climbed this, and my friends of all climbed it several times. None of us have ever summitted via the ridge or from Bomber glacier side. We make a direct approach from upper read Lake and attain the diagonal crack that leads to the summit ridge. The Ridgewalk from bomber is treacherous as you found out. Also trying to attain it from the bomber glacier side, exposes you to a lot of exposure, and you have to cross the bergshrund. If you try it again, try it this way. Summitpost is wrong.
