Damn I wish I was by you I would pay you to build me a smoker
Are Weber kettles worth fixing/restoring? Sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren't. It just depends on the overall condition of the grill, and how much you have invested into it. There's also the setimental, and collectible factor to consider, as well. New ones are $130 plus, and the quality isn't quite as good as the older ones. You can also find them all day on marketplace for cheap...sometimes free. These things will last for years if you treat them right.
@@jasonbrodess5242 yeah that’s it. Restoring an old one from fb marketplace is wayyy cheaper in the long run as long as there is no extensive rust damage
He’s getting big!
@@toddgressick8912 tell me about it!! haha
Lol ur backyard looks like my dreams, I live in an apartment when I can barely use my $20 dll expert grill
Thanks buddy!! Took a lot of time to get it right that’s for sure
Yeah bro! It’s been a minute. Nice to see new content!
Can I use plan alcohol
For cleaning the metal?
So quick tip on the ash sweeper mine was also really rusted. What i did i put pliers on the handle and rotated it in a circle. It popped right off.
Yeah that would have been a lot easier!
Cool thermometer. Where to find one. Great informative vid.

Man I like that, I been thinking about doing me one of these!!!
Do it! Not too bad of a process and you come out with an awesome smoker
You did a great job 👍🏾
Thanks buddy!
For all you haters out there - this is a tomahawk and you want the fat to melt. So even if it didn’t go exactly according to plan, I think it’s perfect.
what that spray you used before you use it?
Pam Cooking Spray all on the inside
@@BBBarbecueandPits is it that much necessary it is kind of expensive around here?
@@mohammedghanem9469 you can use any kind of cooking oil or beef tallow. Use whatever is cheapest for you. You are just using it to start to get a good season on the inside to prevent any rusting
This is a nice build and the paint job is A1. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!!
Yeah when i seen you drill that hole for the thermometer i already knew it wouldn't work so bye and have a great life
Ok
Good job sir! I restored a 1982 red Kettle when it was 23 years old. I too had to use an angle grinder to remove the rusty sweep system. The handles on that girl were beyond repair (the old school, wooden variety), so I bought new ones (the white handles at that point). I used her for 10 years before selling her to a buddy for $30 (the price I paid to restore her). He still has her, and is using her, and she is 42 years old. I am restoring a 1992 kettle now, that is in better shape than the 1982 kettle (I lovingly called Fireball). I think guys who question restoring an old kettle are just lazy!
Heck yeah man!! I bet that kettle was beautiful. I love those really old school Webers. I totally agree, get off your lazy a** and do something worth while. Spot on buddy, thanks for watching!
Thank You for a very informative video !
I was thinking about picking up a used grill and now I just have too.
Do it!! Bring it back to life and save some money in the process
My brother just gave me his Weber Performer deluxe, it has some rust at the bottom where the charcoal is placed but that's really it... I'm in college so can't afford a grill and have been trying to look into ways to make it usable. Thank you so much for this video, hopefully thr grill is salvageable and I can make use of it for a long time
Heck yeah, those performers are nice with the table set up. Let me know if you have any questions about it!
@@BBBarbecueandPits thank you! I likely will be asking lol, I have never even used a grill before. I'm eager to learn all there is
Nice job and what a great music selection!!

Looks great, im used to spatchcocking my chicken, never tried beercan chicken, my daughter just bought me 2 racks, what size chicken do i use ? Appreciate it tyvm
So get a young chicken, they usually have them in any grocery store. Just make sure you remove the packet of inards out of the cavity before you cook it!
@@BBBarbecueandPits tyvm
hi, i'm an italian guy. Please can you tell me how you prepare the rusting solution and what you use for the glossy final effect? thank you so much
I mixed 3 parts salt, hydrogen peroxide, and white vinegar in the spray bottle. Then I used Rustoleum high temp clear coat spray paint.
Yeassiiirrr great vid! Wife brought me one for father’s day & I cant wait to throw it over thr fire!
Oh yeah!! You are going to love it
1. What do you spray in it at the end before lighting? 2. What is that material you use you light?
1. Just some Pam cooking spray to season the inside. You can use any cooking oil you want really. 2. I use tumbleweed fire starters and a chimney full of charcoal to get it started.
@@BBBarbecueandPits thank you.
Please stop doing this….
Ok
NICE DONE!!! OH. HOW THICK IS THAT TOMAHAWK?
Close to an inch thick. Those things are huge 😂
The date code is on the vent. Weber has a excellent warranty. They replaced the bowl on my kettle due to bubbling paint after 5 years. Bowl and lid have a 10 year warranty. If I seen it correctly that kettle had and AI code which is 2017, so under warranty through 2027. Could have been a AT code which would have been 2013, if so warranty was up in 2023.
That’s really good to know, thanks for the info for future projects
Bought a drum off facebook they claimed it was safe non haz. Got it home realized there was a sticker at the bottom that ready dry/rot spray. Be careful make sure you only use a barrell thats food safe
Yeah I definitely think it’s worth the extra $5-$10 to get the food grade just for peace of mind. Mine still had corn syrup in the bottom of it and you could smell that sweet smell.
@BBBarbecueandPits I'm trying to get a barrell from a local honey farm. I turned the barrel into a burn barrel for leaves so atleast it's not a wasted 10
Why can’t you paint the top barrels ? New to grilling my bad …
You can if you want.. I just like having the cool patina and protection that the cooking oil gives the smoker. I was also afraid of is, the paint burning off on the firebox since it gets so hot
That looks like an automatic center punch. You just press it against the metal, no need for a hammer.
Yeah I had no idea when I bought it. Thanks to all the comments now I know 😂
Trying your method right now on my Weber with lump coal.
Hope it comes out great for you!
@@BBBarbecueandPits it came out great!
i came to see a cheap way of doing it and that kit is 350$ i might as well buy a smoker
Funny thing is, this is the cheap way. Any decent drum smoker on the market now will be $800 and up
@@BBBarbecueandPits ur not wrong but I just picked up some pallets to make one 🤷♂️
Great job man. What was your cost and time analysis vs buying a new one?
So I can’t remember exactly it has been so long but it was cheaper to restore I do remember that. Especially if you can get one dirt cheap on fb marketplace
I bought same pit at my town for 100 dollar the owner say was old and ugly lol after fresh paint looks brand new
Yeah they are good smokers to find on fb marketplace for a deal
Used the same degresser on my smoker and it turned the inside silver!
Yeah that stuff is powerful!!
No welding
Only to fix my mistake lol.
