Antenna Shootout - 96" Copper Pipe VS 102" Whip VS 7ft Skipshooter
This is a stationary "mobile" audio test from Kennesaw Mountain Georgia to my house 15.6 miles away.
I'm really excited about sharing this one and pretty proud of producing another video. I really appreciate everyone's input that made this possible. I hope this inspires other regular Joe's like myself to do some work on antenna mounting. I hope my future videos continue this same format where I continue to make follow-up ones with everyone's recommendations.

I am honored to have the equipment and knowledge shared with me by Dallas Rife - 347 - Tennessee with the "Big Iron on his hip". Dallas found me through one of my videos and started to impart some of his knowledge on me. I had willingness to learn and he was willing to help. He is part of a group of radio enthusiasts called the UDX group. It seems to be a type of badge in the radio world. I'm j...

@@rowboat27 Just how I like it! Lol. Thanks brother!
At the beginning of the video you said the antenna would be cut at 108" but at the end you said 95.5" Why is that?
Because that's where I started cutting and ended at 95.5". Any other questions?
Very cool. Great video
Many thanks brother. Tons of videos coming. Just gotta find the time. 73
Seems like a good option for a base station setup, being a little heavy for mobile operation. I've built two base antennas using solid copper ground wire from house wiring cable as the resonating element. They both work well, but the one I used an antenna calculator for actually has a slightly worse SWR on the higher channels than the kludgy one I just put together with 103" resonating element and 102" ground plane wires. Both antennas have range tested to around 14kms base to mobile operation, which I think isn't too bad. Longest contact was 15.5kms distant and still able to discern the message through the noise. I'm no expert in radio or antenna theory; is velocity factor the conductivity of the material itself? Like how well it conducts the signal? In any case, thanks for giving me more ideas in case I need to built more antennas!
That's what I was thinking as well, a base station. I was trying to build a base station antenna out of 5-102" whips. I just couldnt find a mount that could support the vertical and ground radials with 3/8x24 thread. I even reached out to a lathe to see if we could build one... so far no luck. Its just so easy to reach the roof of my car vs the roof of my house for these projects. It is fun to build these and test em out, to be honest. May i ask how you got the wire up in the air? And thank you very much for reaching out and hopefully being inspired to get back out in the workshop to keep the radio hobby alive.
Thanks to your wife , great test !
Amen, brother! She puts up with a lot. And thank you. The next test will hopefully be twice as far. I'm trying to find mountains around the 30ish mile mark that I can drive up onto without much hassle. Standby!
We did this in the 1980s and 90s.Tested each and every make of antenna, in the same manner, and with F/S Meters too. Nothing new. Yes, you need to tune each antenna for the best match, prior to the test. BTW , built and sold hundreds or 3/4 inch copper antennas as well, mainly to shootout competitors. 73
Well where were you when I needed a copper antenna! I wouldn't have made one! Lol. Thats awesome you made them. I'd love to see pictures, videos details of how you made em. Im pribbaly going to tap and drill a set screw into the copper one next justvin case i wanna drive around with it a little, or maybe just stiffen it up. You should post a video and send to me. If possible. I have videos of me showing each one tuned individually. It was actually a lot of fun. You can go back in my mobile Playlist and see those if you'd like.
How many watts are you putting out?
Roughly 220.
@GiantSequoiaNation Nice. I'm looking to set up a base station soon. Hoping to be able to reach my brother and a couple other contacts all 8-12 miles away. Moderate terrain. Hoping I can do it with around 100W and a solid antenna
@@one_eyed_pete2462 oh absolutely. 8-12 with a base station antenna. No sweat. I wish I had a bunch of family and friends within that radius. You could definitely talk all day. Best of luck. What's your 20?
@GiantSequoiaNation Southeast WI. I'm relatively new to the radio world but love learning the technical side of all this. Have a cheap Quansheng handheld I'm modifying right now. Still learning but loving it so far. Base station will probably be up and running next spring.
@one_eyed_pete2462 oh man. I bet it's beautiful out there. That's all I'm doing. I put up videos after some research and then a lot of people correct any of my mistakes then I make follow up videos fixing those issues and I keep on trucking! Lol. If your early in your journey i suggest you do the same. You will learn a lot in a short amount of time. Plus if you can ignore some of the rude ones and focus on the nice ones trying to help, its super rewarding.
I like your test. But you have to tune each antenna to the radio. Did not notice if you did that at all. Did you at least check the SWR for each one? Fun video.
Thanks, man. Yeah I have several videos for the 102 and a separate one when I made the 96 inch copper one, the 7ft skip shooter i also mentioned in another video how I had to swap out radios for some reason and then it magically tuned. So all three are amazing right now. And thank you again for the nice words. I am planning on doubling my distance next test. Standby.
@@GiantSequoiaNation Good morning. Have you found DXCommander, Farpoint Farms on UA-cam? The high quality bar for radio tuning would be LestersCustomTrkStop. He is the real deal an old US Navy RADAR guy with inventions. His turn around times are about 6-9 months. Be careful on who you let touch your radios. As a former OTR truck driver with an electronics degree. I have never had any radio service done in Georgia. I even saw guys near truck stops who would tune without even a O-scope or function meters. That is just bad and would let the smoke out of your radios.
@williamwoodham687 Yes, sir. I have watched both channels for many years. And I have been following Lester's as well for a couple of years. Its good to know that he gets good reports from other radio guys like yourself. My buddy Dallas i met here on YT always recommends a good tech look at the radio. In fact i think he may have mentioned his name as well. And he is also helping me by sending me some tuning equipment for my next antenna and base station project. I always appreciate the help and guidance from all you guys. Videos obviously to follow. And my buddy is currently an OTR trucker as well. He really enjoys the freedom, but says he can probably only do it for 5 more years. One of his main hubs in in Miami so he often drives through ATL and he can stop and visit here. In fact we went out to lunch and he let the fam climb up and check out his cab. Those trucks are so fancy inside nowadays!
Beast!!!
Thanks man. I wish I knew this growing up!
Basically made a ground plane out of your rack.👍

I was sent here by Dallas UDX-347 looks like you have some pretty cool content, I'll sub Anyways, good luck in your radio ventures. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, although Iam in a temporary homestead, I have a rig set up and have been tinkering with radio for over 40 years, everything I learned I picked up from my Father for the most part, who was a Ham and a. Radar engineer for Lockheed Aircraft back in the 50' through the 70's so i have a couple tricks up my sleeve. We "The UDX tribe" is loaded with knowledgeable and super cool level headed folks. Take care udx-4570 palm springs (Eric) saying 73's for now!
Thanks so much for reaching out. And yes Dallas is a great guy and speaks flvery highly of the UDX tribe. My cousin works for Lockheed in NJ and I have a bunch of older gentleman patients of mine here in GA that worked for the one here for 40 some odd years. Super cool. And I appreciate you sharing your years if experience and knowledge. I am following you back! 73!
Why didn't you just run your ground strap directly from your antenna base to the track. Also why don't you run your coaxial from your antenna down through your cabin door down along your to the carpet trim toward the firewall behind the carpet and up to the radio. It's more work but less clutter more professional. But that's just me
Agreed. This onwards one of many videos of my mobile setup. Keep watching and you'll see I did a way more efficient route than even this video shows, and with wayyyyy more bonding. Thank you for your suggestion and 73!
