Cardboard is your friend and the worms love it
😊
We're turning our garden into three rows of raised beds with a polytunnel. It's almost finished, but it's been a lot of work. We're trying to squeeze as much growing space as possible in our small side garden. Our issue is drainage with having clay soil, hence the raised beds instead of growing at ground level. I think you'll find them better for weed management too. Can't wait to see the progress 😃
I really hope so if so I may go that what all over!!!! The weeds are so bad in this part got the allotment.
Oh fab and I see some mom and daughter challenges 😂. You all work so hard and it’s evident in your harvests. Have a fab week Nik, Ali ❄️🥶🇨🇦
Thanks so much Allie! Lovely as always. I think that be nice. She goes through stages of being on camera and not so we will see!!!! I hope she gets stuck in to the garden
I really hope Jasmine enjoys her new growing space. Has she decided what she wants to grow in those beds? Raised beds are definitely hard work to put in but I really love the neat edges and clean lines. Happy growing
She did want to have French pole beans pumpkins. Squash, and prob herbal tea stuff
Growing is a win no matter how it's done. It can evolve as your family evolves too. It will be fun to see Jasmine's new area grow.
It will she is very excited about it be a little project for her
As a newbie gardener it's something that I'll learn to do as I grow and experiment, especially because I want to grow food for other family members 😊
The best gifts are home grown and you get so much you can be so generous
That's how I felt with the old plot - didn't seem to matter how much organic matter I added it just didn't make a difference
Same! Was it clay
@ThatBritishHomestead yep
Raised beds all the way! Best way to go in my opinion. So much more control after the initial work. Thank you for the update Kim. And i love the generator 🤓
Thanks so much Steve! I like how they look, but I'm not 100% sold yet! We have to see what happens won't the weeds in that area. I love my raised garden at home! I love the generator so much! It's something we have wanted for so long
I like the aesthetics of raised beds. If I had the finances for all the materials needed to make them Iwould definitely have a few at my allotment plot.
I bloody loved this one! Made me quite emotional with the sharing with plot friends 🙈🙈
Ahhh bless you
Do you think you have used your land to its best potential?
Great video Nik! Hopefully you can beat that bindweed! We had a load of it but only seem to get it coming through next doors fence. We still have mares/horse tail but every year, it seems to be less of an issue, so hopefully we will conquer it completely. Yes even for our small garden, it is amazing to see how much we can grow in such a small space. When do you usually sow your tomatoes? I am sowing mine later today. Quite excited for the new varieties this year! 8 in total this year. How many varieties are you doing this year as i know you like your varieties? Have a fab weekend and hope Jasmine likes her new garden area! Take care x
I always wonder why peopel say mares tail is so bad. Bind weed isn't as bad a stinging nettle in my book. I hate being stug. I normally sow mine in Feb half term. I have mine underlights tho. What varieties do you have? Don't even.... with how many. I don't need more than 74 plants... on the other hand I think I have over 100 varieties..... so I'll ends up with 200 just watch I've not even counted how many I have year must be over 100. I want to grow them all.
@ThatBritishHomestead marestail grows quite deep, alot deeper than bindweed. It's hard to dig it all out. Luckily, we don't have nettles in the garden. Dr Tony's, gardener's delight, honeycomb, money makers and alices dream for the beds. Roma and heinz for the containers. Ditching beefsteak this year. Oops that 7. Yes I'm not surprised you have about 100 varieties lol I have space for about 16/ 17 in beds and I think 5 containers for the determinate varieties. We did 45.7kg of tomatoes last year. As I'm growing determinate and alices dream, which are new for us this year, it will be interesting to see how much we grow this year.
@ThatBritishHomestead p.s. great you got a sponsor! Also great to use if you get a power cut at home! We just need some sunshine 🌞
Lots to think about, thank you.
Thanks so much!
Using every inch indeed! I always think I need more space but repurposing space is so easy! ❤
Yes there is a lot of space I just don't use effectively! Much easier than getting more space!
Some great ideas for producing lots of crops. Thanks 😊
So nice of you
Someone's having fun. Lol
Always
Hi I have just found your channel. Imnin Sussex and been growing a garden and canning / preserving for the last few years. Slugs and blight is my biggest issue. The sourdough starter idea is brillillient and I will give it a go. I bought a lot of reusable slug traps last year so ready to start. Last yesr I was picking them all and feeding to the chickens but there are just way to many slugs so need to try lots of things.
I do the same! My ducks were amazing at keeping the slugs down! Chickens too! Shame they eat the plants or you could let them out int the garden. The thing with beer traps are expensive but sourdough discharge is free! I love that! It's so rewarding isn't it! And welcome ❤️❤️
Nice to get the seeds off yo a hood start 😊
❤️❤️❤️
I've never heard about using sourdough for slugs...beer yes, never sourdough. Thanks for that! I'll have to try it
It's the yeast that they like so you can even use instant yeast and water but who has the money for that? They will eat better than I do!
Nice headstart to the growing season
Yes I like to get a head start so I can fix my mistakes later on lol
Love your style of video. Keep up the good work. Congratulations on 5K you deserve it and more. ❤🥦🫛💐🪴☘️☘️🧑🍼
Thanks so much that's so kind of you!
Wow Mrs N, a great quantity of quality information crammed into one video. Thanks so much. Subbed, liked and rang your bell. Off to watch your ultimate guide to storing a years worth of food. See you there. All the best.
Thanks so much I'm hopping that you liked it! I try to pack info in and take out all the fluff ❤️❤️❤️❤️ welcome to the team!
Congrats on 5k Nik and for sticking in here for the long haul! Good advice, as always. Altho I refuse to accept lack of space as a reason not to continue sowing anything and everything!
lol I do the same I'm like I need 12 peppers so I'll plant 50
the ultimate dream
It is
Great advice!!! Didn’t know about using sourdough starter for the slugs - will definitely give that one a whirl!
Thanks so much. You know now much we have left over!
Thank you for your video, I don't have anyone in real life either to talk to be the garden, so thank you for all your info and support
Same but we have each other! I love it when I get stories and comments from people like us! Makes me so motivated

lol he did! He gets very excited when I'm it with Andy. He is a mummy's boy!
You and Kerry both advocate for the starter for slugs. Although Kerry only feeds them, instead of trapping. 🤣❤️❤️

Thank you Nik for your good and practical advice but mostly for your positive words which help those of us suffering with mental health struggles. You are such a genuine no nonsense kind of person. Wishing you continued success for the future.
Ah thanks so much for you kind words! I know the struggle well and wishing you all the best!
I have stopped using soap for aphid, be careful not to kill beneficial bugs. I have just found you and love your energy.
I use it very sparingly. I'd rather nature do the heavy lifting lol but sometimes you have such an infestation!
Congratulations on 5k Nik! Hope Jasmine is feeling better. Have a great weekend and take care.
Thank you! You too! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks. A wealth of great ideas of things to grow and how to look after your crops Thank you 😊
So nice of you, thanks so much
Great video x
Ah thanks so much
We Americans do have baked beans and jacket potatoes. But I think our baked beans are Campbell’s brand, not Heinz, and I don’t think they taste the same. We just call a jacket potato a baked potato. We usually top them with cheese and broccoli or butter, cheese, and sour cream. Or even salsa. Breakfast things we’d get out where I live are pancakes with real maple syrup. Or waffles. Or eggs and toast. But no baked beans or tomatoes or fried bread or black pudding.
I went to the USA Florida I loved it we wanted to come and drive about there and eat all the different foods! I just loved it so much
