Hollcana Farm
Canada
Приєднався 8 вер 2023
Hollcana Farm is a family operated, 50 cow dairy herd in Ontario, Canada. This farm was started in 1960 by John Sr. and his wife Johanna who immigrated from Holland in 1954. It is now operated by their son Ron, his wife Debra and their son John Jr. with his wife Melynda. Their other son Jasper also works part time on the farm.
The farm has all registered Holstein cows that are raised on the farm and are milked in a tie stall, hip roof, bank barn. We try to grow most of our feed for the cows and also sell some crops.

Hello i found your channel two days ago and it really is very interesting.Did you see any difference in milk quantity? How many cows do you milk.Thank you
@@zedks4227 Welcome! We milk 51 cows right now. It was recommended to keep our numbers down till we have acclimated to the new barn and robot. We hope to increase over time to 60 cows. The milk quantity has gone up gradually since we started about 400L a pickup, I think.
@@HollcanaFarmThank you for replying to my question, and for the time you spent on filming and editing.I hope more and more subscribers will folow
How long does the calf stay with mom?
@@nobodyschwarz4513 A couple of days
Are most of the cows coming into the robot by themselves? They look like they were lined up waiting.
@@Ironvalleylarry tonight was an awesome night! No cows on the fetch list. We have a few awesome days and then a bad day mixed in now. Hopefully the bad days are further apart. It is pretty awesome to see them line up and push their way in.
Would you say the cows would be laying down more in sand bedding over manure solids which would lead to higher milk production?
@@Justangs The cows love the compost pack and lay down a lot and sleep deeply. If they were on sand they would have to lay on stalls and wouldn't be able to stretch out as much. It doesn't seem like manure solids when you are in it. It seems like a soft cushiony worked garden.
@@HollcanaFarm great video!
Another interesting video!! Thanks for sharing !
Are you guys going to be letting the cows out to pasture in the summer at all?
@@robertsummerville4561 not this year, we are hoping to get a handle on working with the robot before we add the difficult element of pasturing with a robot. Our heifers will still be pastured.
Is your old barn sitting empty
@@dawn20 yes, so sad! Hopefully we can start converting it for the calves this year.
Hello . Your method is very interesting. I have learned a lot. Thank you for sharing.
Why do you tag the bull calves?
@@patrickmorris3990 We have to. All animals have to be tagged. It all started with the BSE. We can't take any cow, calf or bull off the farm without tags even when they die and deadstock picks them up. It is in case of contamination, medicine mistakes, etc so they can trace it back to the original owner. When we buy the tags they are registered with our farm and location.
Really like the bed pack, but I could never tolerate that slop mess on the alley floors
@@steveketchum9836 Yes, it is worse than we thought it would be but they say the collector does a better job than scraper or skid steer. I just didn't realize it was going to be like this compared to the old barn and standing stalls. I guess we have to take the good with the bad. The cows are happy.
Is there a plan for the old milking barn ?
@@markweiler8172 Yes, we hope to convert it for raising heifer calves. Some single pens and some group pens. We thought we would have more time to work on that ourselves but so far not yet.
Great video Debra Ron and John Jr

What are your thoughts on the compost pack so far? Cows look comfortable, but some of them also look quite dirty.
@@kurt4917 I like the compost pack but we are still figuring it out and we are told that it is the hardest to manage in the winter. Yes, the cows do look dirty. In the old barn they looked better on camera than they were and in the new barn they look dirtier than they are. We had to keep the cows clipped in the old barn or they would have looked terrible. Now they can't be clipped but the manure doesn't clump up and stick to them like it would in the old barn if they weren't clipped. They do look stained and sometimes they find a fresh pie to lay in but the compost eventually soaks it off them. It is very different.

I dreaded drawing the markings on my Appaloosa's. I was happy when they went to photos the digital
@@SandySwauger9644 I bet! That would be tough! I only had the odd calf that had spots Iike an Appaloosa.
Back in the 60’s and 70’s it was my job to draw the markings on the registration application. At that time black couldn’t touch the hoof and I think it was about 6inches from the switch the black had to stop on the tail. Occasionally I would miss a leg marking, get rejected and have to redo it. Happy when pictures came along. 😅
love the cow names and stats on screen when you show them
@haydencow I'm glad!
Great video. Never seen anyone on the internet show how to register cows and give milk production, classification scores.
@@investingperson1372 Thanks! I had some followers ask to have a closer look at some cows and I thought it would be neat to have a video to remember how to register a calf. Maybe it will be different down the road?

Hi, Now that the cows are settled into the robot and barn do you see any increase in yield or solids, just wondering if there is increases in both, would the pay for the robot over time, best wishes from Ireland
@@damien3278 It was going really well and we were starting to see things improving with yield and solids for about a week and then just recently everything dropped. We are scrambling to figure out what is wrong. The robot isn't quite running right either. Calling for help tomorrow. We've been told it will take longer than 3 months to get our numbers up substantially. It is more that the cows are adjusted to the robot now, mostly. As for paying for the robot, that is the plan and also to increase our cow numbers as we go.
Sounds about right for 3 months in. It will get better. We feel here that you get more fetch cows in compost barn system but when managed well cows do well. We really like the LVI tillers but they are expensive. I have seen chisel plows and reverse rotation roto tillers booth do good jobs. Bedding is your freind when in doubt add more. Winter is the worst time for the pack. Mix up fetch times dont train them to be fetch cows. On production side make sure they are getting enough energy to sustain peak milk. Seems feed men like pulling to much energy out of the bunk to get cows to go to robot. Its a fine balance. My opinion here compost cows use more energy just walking than freestall cows. Happey new year
@@jessebitler8956 Wow! Thank you for the great advice! It came at a good time. We are struggling the past 4-5 days. It was going really well for about a week and now we don't know what is wrong. I think there is something wrong with the robot arm but not sure. Numbers are down and 3 hours in the night nobody went. I think I need a reboot🥴
@HollcanaFarm we know the frustration. We are 7 years in 240 cows on on galaxy astrea robots.......some days it's still frustrating. High quality forage and keeping ration consistent are a big part of keeping cows moving in robot barn. I dont know much about the lelys other than I wish I had them instead of what I have at this point. I could sense a familiar frustration in your sons comments. If we can help look us up at Vista grande farms llc. Or jon at we cover has our contact info. Lots of people have helped us

Would a slightly damper sawdust reduce the dust, or is the dust an issue
The sawdust needs to be as dry as possible. We actually buy kiln dried sawdust. It is dusty but we wear masks and the the curtains are opened to blow dust away from cows who are off the pack while we spread. We doing the best we can and will improve if possible. It's not for too long every 4-5 days. Thanks
Hi hope all goes well in new year...we started robot over 2 years ago,,, one bit of advice we got from visiting farmers before we started was to stay away from cows and they will find their own time as long as udders are suiting easy attachment....put any problem cows on fixed time milking Good luck 👍
@@corrinurecowman2138 Thank you! That's sounds like a good idea! I will try and talk them into it. 😉
The honest assessment of your cow progress with the new barn and robot is helpful. Expectations are hard to set properly and being realistic about the effort required to get all cows fully trained is helpful for personal satisfaction. How do you think the robot and compost pack are affecting SCC? Where are the slow learners in their lactations? Have you had to train any heifers yet? How well do they do? Does it "rain" inside the barn now that curtains are working properly?
@@melvinstein7739 Thank you! The slow learners are mostly further along in their lactation and the new heifers are much easier to get on to it. I think we have trained at least 4 since we moved in. The robot and compost are pretty good in regards to SCC. It might be a little more difficult especially while getting the pack started. The curtains working properly has helped with the raining problem. We need to keep on top of it when the weather changes so quickly though.
Happy New year everybody, how is opa doing ,thanks for the opinion and kind regards from a Dutch dairyfarmer

Absolutely beautiful barn. You guys are doing a great job and thanks for showing us. Im in a 30 year old freestalbarn and would love to get robots. For more milk start with youre drycow ration. Make a balanced tmr for them. Only hay will not get high enough peak production in next lactation. Invest time and money in becoming youre own feed expert.
@@JB26502 Thank you! I will tell the guys what you said. We know that having the dry cows separate from the bred heifers now will make it easier to feed each group better. Thanks
Hello Happy New Year. Do you want to go out to pasture with the cows in the summer? Greetings
@@Jerseyhunger We will continue to pasture our heifers and as much as we love pasturing the cows we will keep them in for this year, at least, to get used to working with the robot. We will need a good fencing plan to make sure they come to the robot sporadically instead of all at once. We already kept the cows in during the day and only pastured at night since they didn't do well in the heat during the day. I love cows out in the field though. Beautiful!
Happy new year too you all from Denmark🇩🇰♥️👍

Wonderful video today! ...... Happy New Year to all of You as well ...... Things seem to be going pretty well now and Honestly after only 90 days in the new barn the girls seem to be learning their new routine pretty quickly. Just watching some of the older videos in the old barn the change in their routine is huge and as we watch along with all of you the girls seem so much more relaxed, and social to both each other and all of you. I heard you say that the milkings are averaging between 2.5 & 2.7 I think per day which seems awesome for just 90 days into the new routine. You can also get from the videos that all of you seem less stressed and there is a new sense of calm throughout the new barn. With so much new technology in the new barn to learn it can be a bit overwhelming at first but from what we can see you are picking it up as quickly as the girls are adjusting to their new routine too. I suspect the next 3 months will continue to iron out more of the wrinkles and things will become smoother. As Always THANK YOU for continuing to share your journey with all of us....... Heres hoping 2025 will be prosperous and healthy for Hollcana farm........
