United States
Приєднався 30 тра 2024
The podcast that doesn't give a f*ck. Bestselling author Mark Manson discusses some of life's counterintuitive insights, interviews some of the world's smartest people, and manages to laugh his ass of while doing it.
The 4 Stages of Life, Psychological Richness, and How Much Is Enough?
Life has a way of just kind of happening to you. And while exactly what happens is unique to each of us, we all seem to go through very similar stages of our lives. Today, we talk about the challenges of these stages. Each stage comes with its own “crisis” that, if navigated well, can propel us to the next stage. It is this never-ending struggle where life happens.
And then… Drew gets all new age and Mark just isn’t having it. And we round it out with a very simple, yet very difficult question from a listener: How much is enough?
Enjoy.

Thank you for bringing my favourite author.
I can’t wait to read his new book omg
31 here, and knee deep in the crisis coming out of phase 2. I'm a software engineer who can't choose a subfields to focus on, and keeps applying to jobs in other areas, and then backing out, and doing personal projects related to... a ton of different stuff. Feels like I'm just spinning my wheels. I also have phases where I get obsessed with the idea of working in some other completely unrelated field. Same with hobbies - my main hobby is music, but I play 5 different instruments and can't focus on one or two. And I keep randomly getting obsessed with completely unrelated things. I feel awful about it all time time, because I'm not really good at anything, and I know I just need to choose something, but... it's so hard. Luckily, I'm pretty secure in my relationship, so that's something at least.
the fact that nobody talks about Unveiling Your Hidden Potential by Bruce Thornwood speaks volumes about how people are stuck in trance
How do we accept our feelings? A lot of people says to accept whatever negative feeling we have towards a lover, a friend, a family member etc, but no one actually explained how to embrace those feelings and push through.
Since youre in the male space and giving life advice to them, can you advise them to stop sexually harassing women?
The '4 stages' was one of mt favourite articles from way-back-when. I can certainly appreciate the awkward of 'such I be invested in this Conflict or Cause, blah blah blah' but my uncle thought is as kids what he called 'Eamonns Law: the 3 states of Does It matter: There are things you HEAR about. Things you THINK about. And things you CARE about Don't confuse the 3. Sure the struggles in East Yemen or North Macedonia, matter but you only HEAR about them. You might even THINK about them. Is it really smart or right for you or me in Suburbia to Care them though? 🤔
I think the ancients maximized their time, learning about the world. We might not exist without their dedication.
Drew's been on a roll in this one🤣🤣 nice episode
Happiness is an over-used state of being. We're responsible for creating our own "happiness". If we can't generate it from within, we can't expect it to come from without.
I have to appreciate Drew, I remember when he started, it felt more like assisting, asking questions, now he's like a full on host, he drives the conversation, he's got so much more confidence and knowledge!
"The power of accurate observation is often called cynicism by those who do not have it"
37:08 My favorite part 😂 I was watching it seriously until Mark started making fun of it lol.
I have never related to something so much as this talk I think
Is it crucial to have kids in life? or we can move on to 3rd stage in different ways?
Of course not. You can commit to many diffrent things. Maybe for you"settling down" is dedicating yourself to your passion or career. It's all about choosing what you really want in life
35:45 But everything is all about the packaging-even the whole self-development industry. At least (let's say) 80% of what we hear is not profound. We just need people and books to remind us of what is good for us, to keep moving forward and becoming the best versions of ourselves...and Drew, I totally get what you mean based on the book. The way I got it is that life can be much more fun and happy when you put in a conscious effort daily to constantly explore new adventures, people, and activities, no matter how boring it may sound or how many times you've travelled or done something similar. Consistently putting in the effort every day to find something interesting in anything can also lead you to a happy place... like trying to see something interesting in sitting alone in a room, xD. I hope I didn't sound too vague either!
Love your conversation about psychologically rich life 😂
❤❤❤❤ thank you
So thankful UA-cam pulled this video into my algorithm. Now subscribed to this channel and Robert Greene's channel as well! Really needed this messaging at this time of my life. Thank you.
Be careful MM... you are treading in very sensitive territory discussing whether the self-help/talking therapist is really useful. As a therapist myself, I'm sick of the DSM and its ability to ostracize people who don't fall in the dominate norm of society. They've turned our profession from spiritual and artful into a medicalized money making insurance driven machine. I can't work for a counseling center without being required to be certified in some stupid somatic therapy of tapping your head until you're blue in the face. We don't need to address "disorders", we need to see symptoms on a spectrum of severity and treat issues as a spiritual existential nature needing a practical path of direction. Society is built around a particular personality and we don't account for differences. Therapist who come prepped with specific therapy models are prioritizing themselves and not the client because if therapists were prioritizing clients we would let the process of providing therapy around each individual person would be less regimented and practiced. I don't want to treat schizophrenia and adhd with drugs and normalized behavior. I want to help the person function as best they can with what they are capable of doing. I don't want to label them and pathologize them. Our profession has been hijacked by useless books and insurance/government based monopolies. Let the therapists have their profession back! Please stop exploiting it. This guy is how I see life and I never met him til now. Such a relief I'm not losing my marbles.
Great interview. But way too many ads that interrupt the talk
Unspoken expectations are premeditated resentments. Can't recall who said that, but it's gold.
Peter pan syndrome, I think the main reason for it is there isn't enough job for young men,but there's thousands of courses and learning packs,tips,hacks...😅
He’s Great but just a said a lots os bullsh@#$ and that’s the true, he’s just a human, not a genius
Every genius is a human, it's too bad it doesn't work both ways
When Sabrina started speaking, I thought I mistakenly bumped up to 1.5x speed. Man, she's so fast lol
I resonate with this so much, I am in transition as welli am in stage 3 but transitioning within stage 3... And it has nothing to do with age.
It's nice to hear someone explain that silent feeling of not belonging. I'm 30 with three kids, my wife and I bought a house, and we both have high paying jobs. Life sounds great for us. But I have that constant feeling like something isn't right. I've come to the conclusion that it is my job and it's environment but currently not sure how to correct it. I look forward to looking into the work these men do, to try and develop a solution. Thank you all.
I think Periphery in the intro is what got me hooked with this podcast
Guys! Guys! Believe me there is still process after seventy! I'm in it. AND I believe maturity is acceptance and exploration of your own UN-limitedness. I'm very definitely still a work in progress and excited about the wonder of it all. Great show - I really enjoyed it.
i don't understand why Drew is single....
😂 This episode is superb. 👏👏👏 Thanks for the great content everyone 👍🎉🌟
I also feel like I get annoyed by social media, news, etc. much faster these days. I think this is partly because the internet is kind of dying. Every social media is either trying to serve some super generic memes or manipulate me in some way and it gets pretty boring.
@@cnxrogueone Yeah, I mostly did. I am pretty much on youtube only now.
Please write a new book !!! I will buy it i
yes !!! Just be :) !!!
Thanks Mark for this episode!

I really appreciate what you put on your podcast. I look forward to it from time to time. I'v been following you and reading your newsletters, Mark. I love your straightforwardness to every topic and I feel the same on a certain topics. You and Drew are the best team on this podcast. Thank you! ❤ from The Philippines! Anyway, Drew, I'm single 😂😂😂
43:55 I think lumping in all science the same as 'big data', and writing off the entire field of psychology as the same is a dangerous message. Especially when making the case for philosophy, and science's original name was natural philosophy, as well as there being types of psychology specifically getting people to take action. I get the point you guys were trying to make and it is valid, but semantically I think you should be a little more cautious, as if pseudoscience isn't thriving enough these days.
This had been one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in past years…”when to grit and when to quit”. Super happy that you sat down and acknowledged this challenge and even did a video on it.
Clip this #FckOfTheWeek at 30:58
perfect timing
good video yet again, I would only add for people to read 'Magnetic Aura' from Talesio helped me a tonnn
all of your videos click with the things I've been reading in the book 'Magnetic Aura', warm recommendation to everyone
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I have similar problem but pointed in other direction. I am keenly aware of what is going on in the world. For years now, and I think it made me a very unhappy person. So where is this border between engaging in things that are important, but you ultimately feel you have no impact on, and just not giving a fuck about anything.
There’s no entry level job where an adolescent can work and be able to sustain rent and basic necessities without some level of support. Even mid level jobs are not able to support anyone beyond the individual. Seems more like an economic issue rather than a diagnosable mental health issue
Love the discussion and I wonder how much of the four stages could be split between professional and personal life. I.e. I feel like I'm in Stage 3 for my professional life (I'm very committed to my work which I love) and Stage 2 for my personal life (still finding the hobby to commit to, the person to settle down with etc.)
Hahaha hippie Drew was pretty funny
