Thank you truly for speaking for ppl like me from the struggle I’m being watched by ppl my age while they make bank off me and flirt with each other it’s very uncomfortable living and there are fights drugs and deff threats and many staff own guns I was taken from my apartment I own put into a coma for a year from 1,000 milligram medication all because I said I’d rather end my life then go too prison for weed wich I was looking at prison time so they drugged me and stripy me of my right
Thanks, Eric: such a valuable share and message. To see 'the person'! This is wonderfully done Tracey
Great question… Coaching loved one to grow into a role. Or part of a role. Paid supports have a responsibility too. Amazing the shift is a perception of reality shift. A good supportive employment program. Thank you I finally understand how.
I really wanna get out of this group home where my Uncle and the court put me in and I really don't like going to the day program either
Thanks Eric! I suspect our actions and thoughts are very important to our loved ones.
Thankyou Eric
Absolutely agree
Thank you for this video. I wish I had seen it BEFORE I did a Guardian Advocacy for my 34 year old Down Syndrome daughter 5 years ago. It was absolutely the worst decision I made in my life and my daughters live. I realize my circumstances is probably I in a million… 0:05 my situation involved my son who is narcissist lawyer. Without going into great detail because he had the legal right as a “concerned party” he petitioned the court to prove he would be a better guardian than me. These “hearings” went on for over 3 years and cost myself and my daughter’s trust I had set up for her $150,000 in legal fees. Now I have to ask “permission” from the court if I want to move not only out of the state but even the county or make certain medical decisions. It has been a nightmare. I fell like my daughter now “belongs” to the state and we have become prisoners of the court system.
There are a lot of caregivers out there who care for their people and do way more than what they are ever paid to do and sacrifice so much time than what Money could ever pay for and because of so many people like you is the reason why lot of their friends are paid for also have developmental disabilities which you also scored against in another video this text improper information get your damn facts straight or at least be a part of that life before speaking of it
People leave people die peoples lives, change and go to different things. It doesn’t mean that the person who worked with you for you wasn’t actually your friend. This is horrifying to hear to see that there is really people like you making this type of material.
People leave people die peoples lives, change and go to different things. It doesn’t mean that the person who worked with you for you wasn’t actually your friend. This is horrifying to hear to see that there is really people like you making this type of material.
You are very ignorant and you truly need prayer. There are people who do this for a living who love helping people for a living, making sure they get to live independently and get a chance at full life and the process become. Friends do your damn research before making these ignorant ass videos that scare people off from the help that they need?
You are incredibly wrong you need to do more research on developmental disabilities and the different situations and scenarios they go through not all group homes are good but they definitely aren’t all that. There are great caregivers and great group homes that support people and families with developmental disabilities and grouping them together to let them know they are not alone And giving them a chance a normal life with friends and family. This was a distasteful and terrible view of a short synopsis that you seen from a home where someone probably became ill and they were doing what they needed to do to protect the clients and people like you, make it hard for people like us who try to convince our clients that people don’t see them and discriminate against them and their home location because of the fact that they have developmental disabilities
How do the people , & their employers, who end up with a job from using this preferred method end up dealing with Social Security's Substantial Gainful Activity monetary restrictions to avoid losing SSDI/DAC benefits or are they/their disability the type that they can work regular hours for normal pay over a lifetime and not fear losing their benefits? Do you find many companies willing to work with reduced hours to stay under SGA limits?
Always wonderful guidance from Milt Tyree!
I didn't choose to live in a group home but I was forced to come live in one by the court and the state and my SSA and my uncle and court instigator but I really do wanna go back to living with family
I'm also forced to go to a Day Program instead of getting a job
Thank you
This video is great but what type of alternative are you suggesting
Thank you Eric for the reminder of the things we need to do to help build indpendence. Your spot on about our fears with cooking and being safe. But you've made me think, I can get an induction type cooktop burner that has auto shut off if she forgets and induction type pans for my daughter to cook with (versus our gas stove) and she can use the small countertop oven/toaster...small shifts to allow her indpendence in the kitchen. Thank you!.
Hi, I'm an autistic man. I currently live in a group home. Everything is structured, you can't go out when you want to, you can't eat what you want, and you can't even stay home alone! I feel like group homes can be very oppressive and I have little to no autonomy whatsoever. Everyone just wants to control people who are disabled. On top of that, I have to pay over $1000 monthly just to be controlled and yelled at 😢
Question: Would you advise to appoint some of those individuals as guardians as well?
I am not sure how realistic this is outside of siblings and maybe cousins and that's a big maybe even.
Hey, Eric! This hits close to home, I gotta say, thank you for being such a great advocate! Not many people will call these places out for their bs!
Never never do a guardianship they are all crooks and will steal all your money.

I was living in 4 different group homes from my late 20's to my mid 30's. I was bullied mercilessly to where one accident left me with no front teeth. It was hell there in each group home especially the guy that bullied me and was always looking at porn on my government phone when I let him use it. I wish I should have chosen to be homeless instead of going to the group home. I'm now in my late 30's living in what appears to be a boarding home and it's hell here. I'm traumatized From my past experience and each day things seem to get worse. I can't catch a break no matter where I go, what I do.
This is on my mind all the time! But my son is the only child and cousins have their own family and hardly have time even hang out for dinner! Uncle and aunts are just as old as me! Sadly nobody in my case
Thank you Eric... for giving awesome information.
You, Eric hit the nail on the head.! Thank you!
Doesn't exist safe affordable housing otherwise, I would be in one right now and I mite be wrong…. Home is Sacrurny the group home is not!
Its called adult daycare too, nobody can really enjoy group homes because you have no independence mostly, and what about people who have high-functioning autism and are forced by a power of attorney to living in a group home 🏠 insy great video by the way Eric and I'm also ticked off as you are Eric because I have too live in a group home 🏠 I hate Group homes 🏠 and where I live is nice all when the people who run it are not nice and its a form of socail and mental Labottomy etc. Thanks for exposing the group homes and their day program….
I live in a group home at the moment and they are so good to us. We have the same staff week to week with set schedules. We get to choose what we eat and cook ourselves and staff helps us as needed. The true down side I found to group home living is these: 1. We deal daily with people with different disabilities and they do effect us and our progress negatively at times. 2. We do not get community involvement and do not get out of the house much unless we go to day hab. Also we do not get to chose our activities or choose who lives with us. I decided to move to a host home where I will get community involvement and one on one care as I will be the only disabled person in the home.
But I wish I could live with my family since they say I'm ready to live on my own right now and I'm stuck going to the day program too instead of getting a job
Fantastic strategies..I especially like the step #6..Thanks Eric.
It’s better than being in a day program
I don't not like living in this group home that the Court and my Uncle put me in or going to the day program either I can't get a job
My grandma passed away in 2016 and my uncle when he moved he put me in a group home and I don't like it and I don't like going to the day program either rather have a job
We are strong resilient ❤
What about lower functioning adults? We need a live-in caregiver for our son with Down Syndrome and trusting a supportive roommate is a LOT of trust. What if it doesn't work out? We need some kind of agency that has continuity of care
My upstairs neighbours go downstairs into my bathroom to do their laundry.
I have two boys on the spectrum and both are intellectually impaired and I’m terrified and trying to gain knowledge and access to everything. I want them as independent as possible and I’ve heard a lot of bad about group homes and guardianships but how do I still have a say so in what is safe whether it be financial, housing, or their overall best in their life? I’m very overwhelmed. My oldest is 17, my other is almost 16 and he’s nonverbal, but very smart and can go for himself with support. Do I need to go to court for supported decision making?
Eric I lived in 4 group homes
Eric I almost wanted to move to cherry wood on Seymour lake rd.on candy cane Christmas tree 🎄 farm
So sad😢
