Beautiful Color Block Duster Cardigan | Step-by-Step Tutorial
This video is a simple and easy to follow tutorial on how to crochet this charming color block duster cardigan. This project is appropriate for advanced beginner and intermediate crocheters who are already familiar with the following stitches: foundation extended half double crochet, extended half double crochet in the back loop only, extended half double crochet, half double crochet, puff stitch, and double crochet two together. The main body of the cardigan (front panel, back panel, front panel) is worked all in one piece flat. The sleeves are worked in the round, and the border is worked in rows. I used 3/4 skeins of Michael's Lion Brand "Pound of Love" Claret yarn (www.michaels.com/product/lion-brand-pound-of-love-yarn-10661806), 1/2 skeins of Michael's Lion Brand "Pound of Love" Oxford Grey yarn (www.michaels.com/product/lion-brand-pound-of-love-yarn-10661806), 1/2 skeins of Michael's Lion Brand "Pound of Love" Antique White yarn (www.michaels.com/product/lion-brand-pound-of-love-yarn-10661806) and a 6.5mm Furls hook (furlscrochet.com/products/onyx-streamline-metal-crochet-hooks). Other materials used for this project include measuring tape, scissors, darning needle and stitch markers. This cardigan was made-to-measure (here's a tutorial on how to take your measurements: ua-cam.com/video/kNnRoJzOqzA/v-deo.html), but for details on measurements for each of the different panels, see below:
- Cardigan Length: From shoulder to floor

This is a great pattern and the visual really helps! I love that it's super affordable also. Note... I have that furls hook, same size, same color. I love it so much, now I have a collection of them.
I love the Furls hooks so much. Nearly all of my videos are done with either Furls or Ophire hooks. Thank you so much for watching @UndertheNeedle282! ☺
I made this for myself but did the measurements incorrect. I need to add more onto the front panels. I’m your tutorial was easy to follow. This pattern is sooo cute too!
Thank you so much @angg2957! Once you master the measurements, all of your projects will fit perfectly. Great job spotting the mistake and coming up with the solution ☺
Beautiful as always
Thank you @CardilloD2A4Life! ☺
Thanks for sharing! Great way to do a color block style sweater!
You're so right @talishaj3714! Thank you for watching ☺
I've just finished doing this and it turned out beautiful. It's for a friend of my daughters and she loves it. Thank you for sharing the pattern. Look forward to doing more of your tutorials ❤
This comment just made my night - thank you so much @job5802 🤗 I look forward to hearing how my others turn out for you ☺
How many days did it take you
@TemidayoDada-qv5zw I don't remember the exact number of days, but definitely more than a week because I ran out of yarn and it took me a few days to get it.
Gorgeous!
Thank you so much @ladycapulet0662! ☺
Beautiful ❤ this pattern 💕 thanks for sharing watching from South Africa Cape Town

Do you sell your patterns
Hi @deborahkafkalas706. I do not sell patterns as all of my projects are made-to-measure. I include what areas to measure in the description box on all of my tutorials, and I also put together this short tutorial as well: ua-cam.com/video/kNnRoJzOqzA/v-deo.html. I hope this helps, but please do let me know if you have any other questions ☺
I was JUST about buy a pattern from another artist FOR THIS. I'm glad I didn't
Wow - I'm so glad you found me @AminahA-q9z!! ☺
I love that you provide a visual example at the beginning of all your videos. I think other crafters could take a lesson from you. Keep up the awesome work. I love it! What size is the cardigan in this video?
Thank you so much @Hutchs-hands! This is likely around a medium, although all of my projects are made-to-measure, so it's hard to say for certain. I include what areas to measure in the description box on all of my tutorials, and I also put together this short tutorial as well: ua-cam.com/video/kNnRoJzOqzA/v-deo.html. I hope this helps, and thank you again for the kind words ☺
Ayyy!! I'm ready!!!❤
Glad to hear you found the maroon yarn @FJolly86! 😅
How do I shorten the peice without on doing everything I've done
@diannajones2305 Unfortunately you cannot, you would have to start over.
Hello. Where did u get your hook from? It's beautiful
@@SumYarnjawn-n7e Hello, the brand is OPHIRE. Here’s their website ophireco.com/collections/hooks
Hi. Do zinhave a question. I just finished my first set of rounds for the front panel (rounds 1-8). How many do I need to do or do I continue the pattern until a certain point? And how do I know when i get to the forearm hold? Would that be based off my measurements? This is my first time making a wearable so I just want to be sure. 😅
@@imaniscott1712 hello, this would all be based on your own body measurements. I have details about this in the description box. The front panels are half of the back panel minus 2-3 inches for the neck opening. For me, my back panel was 20”, so my front panels were 8” (10 - 2 = 8). So you would continue the pattern until you get to whatever measurement you obtained. For the arm hole depth, it’s based on your arm circumference (the biggest part of your arm) divided by 2 (plus a few inches of ease if you don’t want your sleeves to be too tight). My arm circumference was 14 but I added 2” of ease which gave me 16 divided by 2 = 8 inches of armhole depth. I hope that makes sense.
Beautiful sis ❤
@@TheAfricanGourmet thank you! 😊 ❤️
I’ve been looking for months now to make a cardigan . Yours is the most beautiful and the pattern is very easy looking. I started mine and I wasn’t doing very good with my foundation Road double crochet so I simply chained 120 and then I did 120 double crochets but I noticed that the chain edges are tighter. I don’t know how that’s gonna work if I continue I’m on fourth row right now. Any suggestions?
@carlalambert9686 Thank you so much for the nice feedback! When you say tighter, do you mean the foundation row looks smaller/shorter than the rest of the pattern? Meaning is your work looking like it's widening as you work up your rows? If so, that's usually what happens with traditional foundation chains, especially if you have a tighter tension like me (hence why I use the foundation DC row as it creates a stretchier foundation row that is consistent with the rest of the rows). My recommendations if you're not comfortable using the FDC row are: 1) use a hook that's 1mm larger just for the foundation chain, then go back to your regular hook size for the remainder of the project. So if you're using a 6mm hook for your cardigan, use a 7mm hook for the foundation chain only, then go back to the 6mm hook for the rest of the project. 2) work your Row 1 stitches in the back bumps of the foundation row. I hope that helps!
@@CrochetStateofMind Oh okay, thank you so much. I maybe just need to practice the foundation DC. Yes, the stitches are widening up as I go, so I only have the first 4 rows done. and it looks way tighter, I am afraid one side will be looser and one tighter when done thus not hanging evenly. (waiting to hear back-- thanks for being so quick!) I will frog what I have done and start either with a larger hook or try the foundation DC again. Thanks!! :)
Thank you! for this Beautiful Tutorial! I Love it!❤
You're so welcome! Thank you for watching @anitawhittico7142! ☺
how many balls of each color did you use?
Hi @adenabrown1793. I used 6 skeins of the Mustard yarn, and 1.25 skeins of the Pumpkin Spice yarn. You can find more details on the yarn in the description. Hope that helps! ☺
Beautiful work thanks ❤
Thank you so much @ritakoch370! ☺
Beautiful dear ❤

"Oops, lady, you did it again" another fun & creative tutorial!...just beautiful...I'm excited to get started 😁
@tjacksonkoon1403 LOL 😄😄 thank you so much, love the support and excitement!! 🤗😍
GREAT video tutorial! I can't wait to make this. I have very fat arms, so my arm hole size will be much larger. For your round, it is 45 stitches. Is it correct to say that the number of stitches will change if the hole is increased? I don't want to have to FRO anything. 😅
@staceye3111 Thank you so much for the positive feedback! 😊 And yes, if the hole is increased, you will definitely have more stitches. And don't forget to also increase your arm hole depth chain off the NULL row (my arm hole depth was 8 inches, which came up to 23 chains off the null row; yours will be a longer chain). I hope that makes sense! 😊
Awesome tutorial! I’m going to make this for myself. Thank you so much!
You're so welcome @marycole332! Can't wait to hear how it turns out! 😊

Hello everyone, several people have noticed a discrepancy with the number of rows in the BACK panel. In the video, the instructions state that the back panel is 26 rows total, however, upon going back to the cardigan and re-counting the rows, I realized that number is incorrect. The back panel is actually 35 rows, which is the 15 rows of front panel (x2) + 5 rows for the neck space. I am sorry for this error in my instructions and for any confusion (or frogging!) this may have caused! 😟Since this is a made-to-measure cardigan, I am hoping most of you took your own measurements and made the cardigan according to your own size, so this error on my part didn't affect your project! Thank you to those of you who caught this error and brought it to my attention!
How did you get it to even up to join the front and back with 15 rows on each side in the front and only 26 rows in the back?
@angelabell3337 hello and thank you for the question! After reading your and the other commenter's comment I went back and double-checked and you both are absolutely correct, there is an error. The back panel is actually 35 rows, not 26! I'm honestly not sure where the 26 came from, definitely a mistake on my part. I went ahead and made a comment in the comment section updating the row count for the back panel so that others are aware of this error. Thank you for catching it and bringing it to my attention, and sorry if this caused any unnecessary frogging!
@@CrochetStateofMind you are most welcome. When I see something intriguing I like to make the size used in the video and then remake it in my size. Thank you again for the tutorial
@@angelabell3337 Oh wow that's an interesting strategy! 🤔🤔
Great instructions and I'm so glad it was just one whole piece. I don't like sewing lots of pieces together. Thank you for providing these instructions! I'm not sure why or how but I think I missed something. Your instructions say 15 rows for each side panel. Your back panel looks like it is 30-32 rows (which makes sense) but you're instructions say only 26. Shouldn't it be 15+15 =30 or 16+16=32? When you are stitching the side panels to the back panel for the shoulders, it looks like there is enough stitches to even leave some space (for the neck I'm assuming). What did I miss?
@terrismith3209 hello and thank you for the comment! After reading your comment I went back and double-checked and you are absolutely correct, there is an error.
@@CrochetStateofMindI did frog some rows but not because of the number of rows (I think I should have went to bed early cuz my 4 row repeat became a 2 row repeat for about 6 rows...lmbo). I decided to do 39 for the back panel so it leaves 9 extra. So, not too far off from your adjustment. I really like this pattern! You did a great job with your instructions. I'm not done yet but I'm looking forward to the finished product!!!
@@terrismith3209 I'm glad you were able to work around it! Thank you so much for catching that error! 🤗
Очередной шедевр🎉
You are too kind @Ahhamohteckbe 🤗
I’m making this duster. I love the crochet pattern itself, I’m thinking about doing an afghan using these stitches. Very pleasing combination! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much @GloriaOlive-w2g. I love the idea of the afghan! You'll have to tell me how it turns out ☺
How many bundles of that yarn do I need to use a xl for this project
Hi @ThatsValencia - I don't have a great answer for you as all of my projects are made-to-measure. For my measurements, I used 3.5 skeins (likely around a medium size). I included what parts of your body to measure in the description box, and I've also made a short tutorial on how to take your body measurements to ensure a perfect fit: ua-cam.com/video/kNnRoJzOqzA/v-deo.html. I hope this helps! ☺
Wow, that’s amazing how you took time to make something for yourself just by knowing those simple stitches you did a good job. God bless.
Thank you so much @darleneworthey3735 ☺
