Just to give you a little bit of scale on the size of the legions... Pre-heresy, legions had an average of 100,000 space Marines. So... 20-30% is still a pretty significant loss. Post-heresy, to prevent something like the heresy from happening again, they limited the legions to just 1,000.

You really have to take a closer look at the Salamanders lore cos they happen to be one of the most stomped on and ignored Chapters of any Space Marines. Most of their battles ended in loses or massive casualties as well being one of the smallest legions and the only one that couldn't make anymore chapters after the Legions broke up. As much as what Majorkill said of the Mortificators was messed up, there is a detail he didn't mention about them that should never be overlooked or forgiven. During one of the Black Crusades, the Mortificators were supposed to help defend a world alongside the Lamenters (a Blood Angels successor chapter that rivals the Salamanders in kindness to civilians) but left them high and dry. The reason? They didn't want to fight alongside a chapter from the so-called "cursed" founding. The Lamenters stood by that planet's people alone against the majority of a Black Crusade's efforts for weeks before the Ultramarines and White Scars arrived to assist and lost over 80% of their chapter doing so. If you'd like a story picturing that battle, I'd recommend "DON'T GO" by A Vox in the Void to picture it. If you do, I also recommend having a box of tissues nearby as only a soulless person would have eyes dry enough to not need them. Stay Awesome, INDY!
