Has anyone recommended to you Helsreach? It's about the Black Templars mainly, the Xenos enemy are Orks. Won't say anything else but it's 2 hrs and 30 mins long
So the biggest and most valud criticism with the Salamanders is that they value human life too much. That might seem strange, but consider the following. A Space Marine can live for thousands of years. They are an incredibly valuable asset. Meanwhile your average Imperial citizen is often illiterate, poorly educated, probably malnourished, and may very well be one more shift away from either keeling over dead or becoming a heretic. Moreover, even if they live to the age of 100, odds are they're not going to better their lot in life because Imperial society rarely allows that kind of upward mobility; in the Imperium, you might not be born a slave, but you're usually born into a family profession, and in many cases leaving that profession would be considered an act of treason because you aren't doing the job your family was assigned to do a thousand years ago, and is expected to continue doing so indefinitely until someone in charge says otherwise. Case in point? A common term for Imperial workers is 'Meanials'. Why? Because they do meanial, borderline useless tasks, like counting the number of books in a library. They don't read the books, they don't sort them, or anything other than start from one end of their assigned area and count. Then they go back to their bunk, sleep a few hours, wake up, eat their assogned rations and foodstuffs, and go right back to counting those same books again, and again, and again. Day in, day out, they will keep doing this, and if they fail to do their job properly or dare to try reading any of the books without permission, they will be beaten, starved, or just outright killed. And they usually die of old age. The life of an average human is essentially worthless in the Imperium. So, by that logic, why should a Space Marine sacrifice themselves for a single human? Or ten humans? Or ten thousand? Those people are worth less than the bullets they were shot with, so what's the point in saving them? Moreover, what if saving them sacrifices civilians elsewhere? What if the death of a single Space Marine turns the tide on of a battle in favor of the enemy? And even if it doesn't, how many more lives could that Marine have saved if he had simply focused on the mission rather than worrying about collateral damage and unavoidable casualties? Most Space Marines do not hate humans, and they recognize that the Imperium needs its citizenry. This is why they will intervene to save them. However, most Space Marines believe that ending the threat to the people is more effective than just trying to protect them. The Salamanders actually agree with this to a certain extent, but their logic is 'protect first, attack second', and their biggest criticism is the apparent shortsightedness of their actions. What is the point in saving a city if you lose the planet in the process? Better to lose the city and everyone in it to secure every other city and the planet itself. Better to Externinatus a lost planet and grant mercy to the poor civilians doomed to die than waste valuable time and resources trying to ferry a relative handful of survivors to safety? What will you do with those people? Dump them on another world where they won't be able to find gainful employment and starve to death? You can't afford to take the time and resources to set them up; you're a Space Marine, not a goddamn social worker. Maybe they can work as Chapter Serfs, but what can they really do? Are a hundred janitors worth the loss of even a single Space Marine? Hell, are they even worth the loss of a single bolter round? On and on it goes. The point I'm trying to make is that the Salamanders are good people, saints even, but there is a very real concern that they would let the Imperium and everyone in it die just to save its soul, not just because it's the morally correct choice, but because the inverse is so abhorrent to their mindset that they can't really accept it and really WOULD rather let the Imperium and humanity die for the sake of that moral good. Then again, I'm a Night Lord at heart. Morality and honor doesn't mean a thing to the dead. Kill 10,000 to spare 10,000,000,000 and all that.
13:40 then you're not a salamander, salamanders don't have egos or praise themselves because they don't need to, so no you can't call yourself a true salamander
