The last remaining building on the site of the former Ifor Works in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil. The site produced iron firstly and then steel. The building is believed to have been the Ammonia house and main stores at a later date. The site was finally closed in 1987 after employing thousands of people over hundreds of years. Ffos-Y-Fran Opencast Mine - Merthyr Tydfil

Ffos-Y-Fran land reclamation scheme is a large opencast coal mine in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. Planing consent was granted in 2005. Coal production is due to end by 2022 and land restoration will be finalised by 2024.

Alfie, age 5, climbs Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons for the Wales Air Ambulance Charity. Pen Y Fan is the tallest mountain in the south of the UK He got to the peak in 1 hour 19 minutes.
Morlais Castle (Remains) - Merthyr Tydfil

Sat on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Morlais Castle is believed to have been built around 1270 by The Earl of Gloucester. The remains sit on the edge of a quarry looking over the town of Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. The Crypt at the base of the south tower remains in tact with easy access for visitors to go inside.

Theatre Royal - Merthyr Tydfil

Built in 1891, the Theatre Royal in Merthyr Tydfil was originally opened as a theatre with 1,500 seats. The theatre was closed in the late 1960's and was converted into a bingo hall. The bingo hall closed in 2009 and the building is currently unused. The Theatre Royal is a Grade II listed building.
Pont Ar Daf Bridge - Llwyn-on Reservoir

The Llwyn-on Reservoir in Merthyr Tydfil was opened in 1926 after flooding many buildings and structures. One of these structures was the Pont Ar Daf Bridge. The bridge still stands under the reservoir and rises from the water during periods of hot weather.
Miners Hall - Merthyr Tydfil

Originally built in 1853, the building was named Shiloh Chapel and used for religious purposes. In 1921 the building was sold to The Miners welfare for a sum of £1600. The 'Old' Vaynor Church dates back to 1295 making it 725 years old. It sits derelict in the woods close to the 'New' Church. The Merthyr General Hospital was built in 1888, mainly by the efforts of Sir W.T.Lewis (Lord Merthyr), who obtained financial support from the Marquess of Bute, and by public subscription. Cyfarthfa Ironworks is located in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. Anthony Bacon started Iron production at Cyfarthfa in 1765. Richard Crawshay leased the works from Bacon's family in 1786, and in 1794 became the sole owner. In 1803 he employed 1,500 people and Cyfarthfa Ironworks was said to be the biggest in the world. Fly tipping costs the British Taxpayer between £100-150 million every year! It is a serious problem in the South Wales valleys and has not been helped with the closure of household waste and recycling centres due to Covid-19. Here is some drone footage of the once beautiful mountains of Merthyr Tydfil.
In Merthyr and Cefn it was always said that when Crawshay died the epitaph "God Forgive Me" on his tombstone had the words "Too Late You Old Bastard" added in paint shortly afterwards.

Mr George, I've been enjoying your photos on Facebook of Merthyr, old and new. Now I'll explore your YT clips. Ann Lewis has a 3-part history at www.merthyr-history.com. I passed by the hospital on a visit back home just a few weeks ago. My mother and grandfather both died here, cousins were born here, and my uncle was foreman of general maintenance. I see that planning permission has just been granted to convert the old buildings into flats, retaining the historic facade.

so sad I did my nurse training here in the days when matrons and doctors trained us you d be inspected by matron before you went on duty to make sure your uniform was clean and ironed your tights weren t laddered and your nails were cut short and clean and your hair had to worn up and off your collar
