Why a Linear Calendar Works Best for Pre-K: A Developmentally Appropriate Approach!
Ditch the traditional grid calendar! 🗓️ For preschoolers and Pre-K students, a linear calendar is a much more developmentally appropriate way to explore time, numbers, and sequencing.
In this video, I’ll explain:
✅ Why young children struggle with understanding time on a grid calendar
✅ How a **linear calendar** makes it easier for them to see numbers in order and understand sequencing
✅ How this approach naturally supports early math skills like counting, number recognition, and patterning
By aligning with how preschoolers process time and numbers, a linear calendar makes learning **more meaningful, engaging, and effective**! Watch to learn how you can implement this simple but powerful change in your classroom.

The Power of Bonding with Your Students in the First Few Weeks 💖
They need parenting
I agree...and for some reason this extreme 'gentle parenting' is not working
It is what it is sometimes, isn't it Diane? lol. You are trying to teach the numbers, days of the week, months of the year sequences without overwhelming and frustrating the children. It's all about jumping the sharks and you are an inspiration for jumping those sharks for so long. - Dwight
Is your magnet board an oil drip pan? I am trying to find one that is magnetic and not too expensive.
it is...I got it at walmart years ago
I love how you spoke on the importance of not rushing the learning process. Great video! Can’t wait for the reading topic.
Thanks! I'll have one up soon! I whole-heartedly believe in not pushing kids into anything that they are not ready for on a developmental level.
This video was very helpful! You are not only a great little people teacher, you are a great big people teacher 😊
Thank you so much! That seriously made my day. I do my best!
I also had the same issue with the water and carpet circles! They stuck at home, but not on my rug. I also had to keep moving the kids around! You have the same issues as me. Crazy! I had to stop and do a reset also. I got online and I was reading about other people who said that they were having the same issues I was, so I also had to tell myself I couldn’t fight it anymore. I started to known that many of my kids were listening, but they were listening from another area of the room because when they heard something that they were definitely interested in they would head back to the circle time and join. So I also realized that there’s no way I’m gonna make these kids sit for the amount of time that the Starfall curriculum calls for. After I stopped fighting it they started to like me better, and my day was a lot less stressful. I told myself “They’re only preschoolers”, and this group is very needy, esp one that lost his mother at only 9 months, so I’m gonna give him the attention he craves. So far, it’s going a lot better for all of us.
That class was extremely difficult, but in the end they made me a better teacher. They are in first grade now...I just happen to have BOTH of our first grade teachers' kids in my pre-k class this year....they tell me stories, they cry a lot, they have really hard days...in other words...not much has changed with that group! I feel for you. Hang in there. It doesn't actually get better, you just get better at figuring out ways to manage them. The next grooup of kids you have will be a breeze...even if they aren't!
I WISH I could do table centers in the morning, but my room is so small and I don’t have an aide anymore, so I have to have them on the carpet so the sanitizer can disappear, because we have breakfast. Also, my circle time is a disaster! I have kids that get sent to a chair, and then they slide the noisy chair on the bare floor back and forth. My director started handing them fidgets and that just became more of a distraction because they couldn’t hold onto them and they would fight over the ones they wanted- the swishy balls and then break them with little beads coming out. 😫
Oh my gosh! No aide? How many kids? Is that even legal? YOu are in a bad situation and I don't think you should stay. It is impossible to handle all that alone and it is not safe for you or the other kids. Look up your state ratios of early childhood teachers to students...than have a talk with your director. That is NOT okay! Now I'm going to be worried about you all day! I have a really small room too...I could not survive without table centers. The kids need to be engaged in play the minute they walk into the room so they can actually be managed. Even if it is just one table of playdough. AAAAAH!!! I'm seriously so worried about you! Email me at teachprek101@gmail.com. I want to help you!
Start praying for (incognito over ) this child. Some key words you said (we’re DESTROYING everything, changing the entire class atmosphere, growling) plus the unsupervised screen time - scary non-age appropriate language you mentioned… sounds like there could be a spiritual aspect going on as well. You teach in a religious environment, right? I would ask God for insight and wisdom into this specific situation. ❤
That child is not at my school anymore. He raged really hard one day and seriously hurt another child...as I predicted he would. My class feels secure and happy and they are a loud and joyful bunch. Trust me...prayers have been said. His mom posts on social media about him punching her in the face and being violent with her...yet somehow I was the one who wasn't equipped to handle him and I needed to lower my expectations in regards to his behavior. Plus...maybe posting about your own child like that is part of the problem? I feel for him and worry about what his life is going to look like. I ask God to bless him and his mom every day. I hope it does some good.
Great video. Thank you for sharing. Do you have any videos on your linear calendar?
Not yet! but great idea! Ill do one this week!...or maybe i'll wait until we begin a new month....?
@ one for beginning a new month would be great, but would also be helpful to see how you do a whole month! Since you are at the end of a month this week. Looking forward to learning more!
Well Queen Diane, Play based learning is really the way to go even sometimes because it is about educating students in a way that inspires their interests and not their wishes or fights to hit the exits so to speak. - Dwight
Totally with you on that, Dwight! Play-based learning is where it’s at! Kids learn best when they’re having fun!
I love the large bears. Do you remember where you got them?
I inherited them from a previous teacher 15 years ago...but I found them on amazon. They come in 3 sizes too! all in one set amzn.to/40zId72
@@teachpre-k101 Thank you! Loved this video.
What an amazing encouraging woman you are!! I’m teaching children’s church for preschool class and looking for help. I have a rowdy bunch and no skills as I am not a teacher for my day job. This is just what I needed! More Love! ❤️ thank you for what you are doing!
I am so glad you found my video helpful! Keep going!
Hi Queen Diane !, Thank you for showing Your Classroom. - Dwight
You're welcome, Dwight! I'm glad you liked it.
Hi Diane! Thank you for sharing so many wonderful tips. Can you share with me the curriculum you are teaching? I am a new PreK teacher and the one my school purchased is not working for my 20 students class. Thank you!!!
Hey! You know...I found that most of the preschool curriculums out there are written by well-meaning Phd's who haven't been in a real classroom for years. There aren't enough activities that keep the kids engaged, and you have to come up with most of the math, literacy, science and art centers by yourself anyway. That said, I made and follow my own curriculum. I have my own letter curriculum and theme lesson plans with mostly printable hands-on activities. not worksheets. I list books, videos, include classroom posters etc. It has been built over years of teaching 3-5 year olds. Go to Teachers Pay Teachers. My store is called Teach PreK...there are literally HUNDREDS of resources for early childhood teachers on that site
Thank you!!!
Can you do a video on teaching 2 year olds class? Would be strictly play based?
I have never taught 2 year-olds...but my teacher bestie across the hall from me is an expert...I'll ask her if she can join me soon and we can do a little interview! great idea! I just messaged her...we will set a date asap!
Thank you! I really love your advice and channel. In college, none of my professors really focused on the 2yrs old curriculum so I am a bit stuck.
Thank you for all these great ideas! I love the two-sided animal photo cards. We’ve been talking about this, and that is a great visual. We also use the Jan Brett printables-I have them on jumbo craft sticks, and they LOVE them!
Thank you...it is one of my favorite lessons...and they love sharing what they learned with their families...Jan brett...the BEST!
I purchased this unit, and have been busy cutting and laminating. So many great activities in there!
Your kiddos are going to have FUN! ❤️❤️

I LOVE that! Syd the Slow-talking syllable sloth! thanks

Thak you! The kids always do too!
How did they do the snowmen? So cute!
Puffy paint and all the parts! thank you! You can make white puffy paint with shaving cream and liquid glue...no recipe...I just mix and add until its like whipped egg whites.
Thank you so much I started working at a daycare and today i wanted to quit. Your video is a lifesaver.
You've got this! I'm so glad the video helped.

Beautiful . My district did not allow worksheets . Do you have ECERs evaluation? .
I don't do worksheets. Not sure what you mean. I have colloring sheets in my writing center...but those are for free time
I appreciate you sharing this, i am struggling with this as well as a full time prek assistant teacher, i work full time at an all day center and it is challenging. I have 2 boys in the room that behave this way, the one is more aggressive and the other one has a tendency to copy, although he was not aggressive at first, he is now. I think the most challenging thing for me is that the parents of almost all of the children do not want to acknowledge or work together to make a difference for their child, and the administration is not offering much support either. I feel that almost all of the blame is being put on me and the lead teacher in the room, but we cannot do much if the parents are brushing off concerns and making excuses (I have heard "it's a boy thing" so many times and that just is not true, there are many other little boys in the room that are not throwing chairs and needing to be carried to the office regularly for hurting other children and/or teachers). The ratio at my job is 12 to 1, and we typically have 20 children per day. I am not really sure how to deal with this behavior without parental or management support as well :(. Thank you for sharing your story and experiences with this. Praying that it gets better in the years to come and that these children get the help they need because I also highly suspect that some of them are on the spectrum and/or have adhd, saying without judgement as an adult who is diagnosed with adhd as well. God bless you 🙏🏻✝️❤️
Oh my gosh! My heart is breaking for you right now. I know the anxiety that comes with this and I know that this behavior makes the other children anxious and just breeds chaos. I am lucky to have a very supportive administration who helped me along the way. I am an experienced teacher and I had to admit I was out of my depth with this child. We tried for a while to make it work, but he was just too much to handle. We had to let him go. My anxiety is gone and the class is a noisy, happy, SAFE bunch of kids now...totally workable. I want you to know it is not your fault or the lead teacher's...I am sure you know that. Some kids require a level of attention that is just not possible in a regular classroom setting-especially one of that size with just two people...ARE YOU KIDDING ME? 2?...Until the country at large finds out a way to make our childcare and preschool system work better and gives us teachers and aides the help and respect we deserve, these kids will just fall through the cracks and take a lot of other kids with them. Are you going to tell me the other kids are not being traumatized by this behavior? The truth is...they are! The kids around these kids now have anxiety that will follow them as they move on through school and other situations where they are interacting with other kids. Your administration or directors need to hear this and help you two! The other parents should demand it! I am so sorry and I hope things get better or you get more help. Please email me with some updates..this is near to my heart and I will be thinking of you and your lead on a daily basis I am sure. teachprek101@gmail.com. Bless YOU! each and every day! I appreciate you and the work you do...it isn't easy and it is NOT "just playing with kids". Good thin we make the big bucks 'eh? LOL!
And Queen Diane, I am sure that they are happy to see you again. Your Patience and Kindness goes a long way with those children to where it makes going to school for them everyday sound less nightmarish and more like a sort of formalized version of an exploration/activity center. - Dwight
thanks Dwight
Where is the build a snowman from.
If you are talking about the magnet board...I made those myself using printable inkjet paper and some awesome clip art. Then I added buttons with sticky magnets on the back too

Snow Day tomorrow in Kansas City! ❄️🥶☃️
I'd love a Snow Day!....Not one last year...I'm hoping we get more than a dusting soon! It's UTAH for crying out loud...we have no snow! Enjoy a day or two more!
Love your ideas, as always. I am supposed to go back tomorrow, but looks like a snow day or two for Maryland. I love snow and am thrilled about another day or two of break. LOL! Happy Back to School to us all!
I hope you enjoyed your snow day! I survived the first day back...already exhausted! I gotta build my stamina back up! have a great week
I received an interesting handout during my education classes in college. It was called “Job Description for a Teacher”, and it listed all the other professions a teacher is doing in addition to the teacher role.
Yeah...it was probably A LOT! Yet they still feel okay paying teachers a non-livable wage in most places. It is maddening! It is something you really have to love and feel called to do. It brings me so much joy every day...along with the exhaustion! Thanks for commenting!
Awesome post!!!!
Thank you!
❤❤❤
Thank you Diane. I appreciate you sharing your joy of teaching with the rest of us!
YOu are so welcome Beth! I have some fun activities that I'm going to do this week. I'll share them soon!
Queen Diane, Those children love you too however imagine what they struggle with when break is over and they have to start back leaving everything that they are accustomed to and that makes them happy at home to return to school everyday under penalty of law. If the words "Pac Man" ring any bells for you then that's what having to do that everyday did to me back when I was a little autistic school student. Keep sticking with them and enduring with them until the very end and trust me, they will come out loving you at the end of the school year. - Dwight
You know, Dwight...I am fully aware of everything you are saying in your comment having raised 2 children and having taught preschool for 15 years.
Sorry Dwight...I hit enter by accident...I know everything you said, but 2 things can be true at the same time. Even 3 or 4 things can be true at the same time. We all will have an adjustment when we return. I use this place to be really honest. I am full of dread and will mis my freedom I've had during break...but I am also so excited to see all of them and hear about all the fun they had and toys Santa brought. We are all just humans ...feeling feelings...it's all good...we can mention them and still have complete awareness of the other humans feeling the same way. I hope you have a very happy new year
@@teachpre-k101 That's right Queen Diane. - Dwight
Happy Birthday to your mom!
thanks Amy...she had a good one...although she wont remember it.
I just bought this packet. I'm looking forward to setting it up in my room tomorrow. We start back on Monday. I want to find your packet of "props" to add when I switch out the coco bar. Thanks for all of your sharing!
I'm so glad! Tomorrow I'll be filming my set-up! I hope you love it! My kiddos love it every year!
Thanks so much for sharing. Always enjoy your thoughtful videos.
Thank you so much for commenting. I'm soooooooo not ready for break to end!
Hello Diane! This is my first year teaching Pre-K and I have learned so much from you! I absolutely love the fact that you jump right to the point. I don't have a lot of time and I love videos that give a lot of information in a short amount of time. Thanks again, and I hope you have a great 2025!
Oh my gosh! You made my whole day! Thank you so much! I hope you have a great 2025 too!
@@teachpre-k101 I wanted to say, too, that I had heard of TPT, but didn't really know what it was. It was through you that I learned about that service and I absolutely love it. I have purchased many of your resources! If you could, would you do a video that goes more in depth about the various features of TPT? Thanks so much!
Hey! Just got the new book called “i’m not getting them ready for Kindergarten". A must read for all of u teachers.
I LOVE the title! I'll check it oout. Thanks Jen!
Thank you so so much
You are so welcome!
My son is almost 5 and he is hitting and biting (this is a really new one) and his teacher can’t figure out why. She says she doesn’t see any build up to it. For example, he said that a boy pulled on his arm so that’s why he threw him to the ground and hit him. I think the boy might be on the spectrum (I observed at his school to see what could be happening) and their outside space to play is small and pre-k, kindergarten, and 1st grade play together. All the boys play rough and I did see some boys throw others down, push, etc. The boy he said pulled his arm, i did see him grab his arm and the teacher immediately intervened. I don’t believe he hits for no reason. He is fine at home (no siblings) and when we do play dates. I feel defeated because I’m one week I’ve been called by his school three times. I’ve suggested so many things to his school but it doesn’t feel like they are listening. They keep telling me to talk to him but i already talk to him everyday because he tells on himself on the way back home. I don’t know how I’m supposed to help him when this only happens at school.
I'm wondering if this is defensive in nature. I think a good place to start is to find out if he feels scared or powerless. I had this with a boy in my class a few weeks ago, and it was because his brother was ratcheting up their rough play and he was feeling powerless and defesnsive. His parents helped the boys get through it and everything smoothed out. If your child is feeling powerless at school though, you won't have that much control. You can talk to his teacher and see what she knows. You are doing the right thing. Get to the root of it and it will resolve faster. Good luck to you. it can be so tough figuring out preschoolers sometimes. Your son is fortunate to have such a good mom
Always appreciate the videos where you speak about behaviors. Kids are different these days, I love the idea of meeting them where they are.
Thak you so much. Behaviors are the hardest part of this job. They change so much from year to year. Little kids have so many reasons why they act out too, it can be so hard to get to the root of the problems
This is beautiful!! Are all schools like this??
I wish! I think most teachers try their best to make learning fun, but we don't all have the same resources or support. Thank You!
