Crown XLS 2502 power amp with Magnepan LRS Plus
Переглядів 3,7 тис.4 місяці тому
With regard to the sound of the Crown amp in this review, my comments are strictly based on the listening experiences using the Magnepan LRS Plus. I did not care for the amp while using it with my Klipsch Heritage speakers for several reasons. With the LRS Plus, it was a magic match. Perhaps it may be an impedance matter, not sure.

Ever try the F5? Just built a F5m and its really nice.
@@robmccance no but my favorite of the ones I have tried so far is the F3 which is the least expensive ironically
Very nice. Can they play 70s rock?
@@tonychand4789 during the time of this video the answer is no but now with all the modifications since this video we can definitely play 70s rock. I’ll explain in a new updated video soon.
I love blue tooth wifi sucks always problems
I’ve tried the rel, Kef and the SVS 3000 micro, the SVS are in my opinion the superior sub for makes
My. , you think it’s the second coming! I’ve had aggies for 35 years. They great, but they aren’t perfect!
Very interesting videos. Love following your new adventure. Good music with some bourbon!
Thanks for watching! I’m making a Part 3 soon.
Great and interesting video. Even though I prefer the phenolic diaphram in my tweeters. I agree about the titanium sounding nice when listening to horn instruments. Almost life like to me. Also, I really enjoyed that first track. Really showed what the Heresy’s can do. 🎶🎵🎶
Keep telling yourself that maybe someday your Dynaco ST70 will turn into a Mcintosh MC275.

great video. i'm very much interested in the ULTRA version, but lost with which is the "right" Amp to use for them, and still looking !. Greg (the Qualio Designer) used TEKTRON Tube amp for the OB section, but it's a lot of money (20K), plus you need a Solid State if you wanna bi-amp them... thank you for sharing your experience .
Look forward to you trying the built in crossover and low level input with the Rel..
Hi. Plan speakers?
Digging the Khurangbin! I replaced the power supply and entirely recapped my Pas-3, running the original Dynaco 12ax7s. I love it. Looking to upgrade my 10w monoblock amps.. toss up between the st-70 and a vintage tube receiver. Your st-70 really sings! Thanks for posting.
I was a soundman for a club level Band for a few years in the early 80's. The sound systems at that time were largely Bass/Mid Horns, horn top end and Subs, largely JBL, and EV. You could pickup horns like the ones sitting on top of the Ojas cheap. The larger ones had 2" diaphragms and were powered by class A/B power amps and used electronic crossovers, and a EQ. Considerations of horns for shows were partially based on throw and dispersion as well as sonic performance. On occasion when I had the equipment sitting in my bedroom waiting for the next gig I would hook it up to my stereo. Awesome effortless sound I have Heresy III's now powered by a Wilsenton R8 with Gold Lion KT88's streamed from an Eversolo A6 and an old 15" Definitive Tech sub. My room is 20' x 40' It has 22' high cathedral ceilings. I had some room treatments but the sound was always a little boomy, reverbe, when played loud. I like it loud. To much sound was going up into the high ceiling area. The slant of the Heresy stands was directing sound into the upper decks. I had some foam speaker pads that were tapered and when arranged on the Heresy stands allowed the speaker to sit flat in the stand, albeit a little higher. I added a few more panels from GIK and viola!, my sound is absorbed by my rug, couch,, panels and me at levels that remind me of live shows. All this to set the stage as to why I am Leary of adding a horn like the one on the Ojas. The Heresy mid horn has a rather narrow vertical dispersion and an ultra wide dispersion profile. Exactly what my room calls for. My soundstage wraps around the room far beyond the speakers. Like your channel, Horns n Tubes Forever.
Horn is great!
Yup, great diy project. Completely stupid to sell these at this price. Marketing bullshit coming from a guy who imported jeans, stuck his brand on them and sold them to rich hipsters at pop up stores for an outrageous price.
I guess that's good work if you can get it.
Hi! Nice Video! Iam about to build my first horn speaker too. Its a pretty young german DIY Project called "Spieker&Martin Monitor 1". They are based on the JBL 4349 (John Darko made a review and comparison video of them with the Klipsch Forte IV) and the parts come from 1000€-2300€ depending on what finish you like, wooden/plastic horn, etc. The guy who started it has a YT channel too. Its called "Snake Oil Audio" And based on the speaker they founded a new HiFi-Forum in Germany. By now the speaker already is one of the most succsessfull DIY Speaker in Germany with over 1000 plans( for free) and Kits and finished speaker sold during 2 years.. Let me know if you are interested then i can send you the building plans (in german). Best regards from Germany :)
I am now considering , building a Dynaco version of Surface Amplifier .
They are soo soft an airy I like them!
Thank you very much for this comparison. I clearly prefer the non ported version.
@OliverFuchs-u4c I do as well. Thanks
Absolutely beautiful, ports really make improvements. Now I want my Heresy's back lol......Interesting, I have similar set config except vinyl/tt, I am more in tapes. Not any $$$ cables can come close to my WE wires.
What preamp is that? Looks sexy. F8 over SIT3 is high praise!
Aretha from Erhard Audio. Thanks
As someone that has dreamt about owning the heresy IV I cant believe how much better the OB speakers sound.
Far prefer the sealed sound in these demo's. Main issue is these great-sounding tracks like Yello and Boti would require an almost broken system to sound bad, so how about throwing in a track that will have easier time showing speaker differences, with some borderline upper-midrange/female vocal, etc.
@@JRadian Good points. I’ll to this in part 3. Thanks for commenting. 👍
Much better to roll your own. Nice work!
@@earlfenwick thank you for the thoughts. Much appreciated.
If you want to hear a big improvement try Dave Ault’s LMAHL tweeters. It solves the problem of the poor quality of the original tweeter by using a new B&C tweeter in a machined aluminum horn for an easy drop in replacement. It will definitely change your opinion of the importance of the tweeter. Really would encourage you to try it out, we have the same taste in music, you will be blown away.
Thanks for sharing. No worries I have something special on the way.
I'm sure it sounds good and is what you want as a sub in your system , it does sound better with the sub, but its not really a sub, more a mid-bass 'thing'. Been thinking of getting one myself , is it all I need. Not sure yet.
@@ConorHanley it’s musical, but not something I would use for movies
I started with Klipsch RP-600M and really enjoyed the experience for 4 years. Great value for money and easy to sell on second hand. I recenlty sold them to a guy who wanted rear speakers for a Klipsch surround system. I got a wonderful pair of JMR (Jean Marie Reynaud) Cantibile transmission line floorstanders. The transmission line gives superbe bass! My RP-600M worked with a REL Subwoofer. My son is now enjoying the subwoofer with his sound bar. I want to get a new pair of Klipsch Heresy or do something DIY. I really do miss their unique sound for voice as love modern folk music. Where to start? I'm really looking forward to this project. Thankyou and happy new year. Gary, Montpellier, France.
I love this. I'm looking at a set of Heresy 1s that look like they were painted with a house roller. So...cheap and a good candidate for modding. As the dad of a kid who is ''retarded'', it would be great to hear the word less....Thanks! Subbed.
Cool experiment Doc. What was the name of the artist for the second track? Looking forward to seeing the final product
Thank you, it’s Chris Botti.
You got serious Hersey IV envy!! Just go buy the IVs already! Happy New Year !
Daniel what you should do; is do a 40hz test tone and with a Db meter (your phone will work) and have the mic/phone setup at same position with ported vs unported and show the difference in amplitude….my gut is that this mod is a nominal if not noticeable 3Db change. Not a fan of messing with design of speakers as you’re changing the tuning. If you care less about the bass, as you say in your vid, why do it? Also, the Hersey 4s cabinet are tuned to produce the bottom end. (Cabinet of the 4 is wider and ported in the back - tuned.) ive tested these speakers using 20 hz and 30 hz frequencies and get plenty of audible bass with less than .05 watts of amperage. The specs on this speaker are very much understated in that regard. With your test, there is Zero difference in decent headphones so I’m not sure you did anything here than poke a hole in a speaker cabinet that’s been designed appropriately for what it is.
Wow, I thought the ports added dimensionality to the bass; sounded like the notes were taking longer to decay. I preferred the overall clarity of the ports and wasn't expecting to even be able to hear a difference over my earphones! Regarding the tweeter & crossovers, I did the same upgrades to my Forte 1's and honestly I couldn't detect a difference. That being said, my hearing rolls off at 10Khz (I'm 71); have you considered listening to a tone generator and seeing where your hearing cuts off :)? I did some other mods to my Forte's including no res foam applied to the entire speaker interior surface and sound dampening material fitted to the horn surfaces. Also upgraded the terminals and internal wiring. Again, I didn't AB each upgrade but I believe the overall package is superior to what I had, especially since the crossover components were 50 yrs old and the speaker enclosures practically echoed when rapping on the outer surface. But while I don't doubt that some of the on line bloggers are hearing subtleties, in my case it could just be the placebo effect. At the end of the day I love my Fortes and the ST35 and PAS preamp combo and that's all that matters.
@@kingsburybrowne5727 thanks for sharing that that’s very interesting. The only hearing test I did was one of the online UA-cam versions using some headsets and I was only able to get up to 13.5 Kz. Glad to hear you’re set up is working out.
I wonder if a port slot instead of the holes would have made a difference.
@@Harrisongrey19 that’s a good question, but I did the research on it and it didn’t seem to hold true.
@@drde4010 if it had different bracing on the inside I could see it making a difference… the Zu audio union 6 I own have the port slot, horizontal on the back of the speaker at the bottom.
@@Harrisongrey19 thanks for sharing this. I gave that some thought as well and I think you may be onto something there. I’ll give that a look and it was mentioned in earlier comments.
@@drde4010 right on, digging the videos keep it up. Just subscribed
Nice job on the ported mod for your Heresies. Also agree about $$$ speaker cables.
Glad I’m not the only one that agrees about the speaker cables.
I prefer the sealed. The ported sounds a little more open yet muffled at the same time.
@@s.t.e.r.e.o. thanks for sharing, that’s very interesting and I got the same feeling as well. I think what happens is that the Bass overwhelms the upper mid range and clouds it.
Very interested in this speaker, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have built two designs of 3-way horn-loaded speakers, working on a third design currently. Getting mostly commercial parts but the bass horns have been my design/experimentation. I've found that the midranges is the most influential in the overall impression of a hor, not that the bass and treble aren't important too. The PWK/OJAS horn looks like the bees-knees; big and sectioned for wide dispersion. Would love to get one of those horns and play around with it. Also, good luck with your DYI efforts. Cheers, Dan
@@DannerPlace thank you for sharing. I just posted part two, but I don’t know if everyone can see it due to a copyright
I had heard so many bad things and started to regret some recent DOL orders I had coming in. When they arrived, I was stunned at how nice the jackets were and also how they sounded. I did order some Analog Productions pressings of the same records and figured I could keep the DOLs in my office and the QRPs in my living room. I need to stop freaking out about what people say. Thank you for being honest. I started to question my own ears!
The original st70 just has lower distortion under measure. If you like the Bob Latino version, most likely, you are hooked up to its distortion profile. The Bob Latino version has lower the NFB ratio and allow Triode mode. They all introduce distortion. That’s is no surprise it measures worse than the original.
@@kelvinjinxd I am no longer using the Bob Latino for a few reasons. The ST70 that I’m using now is based on the original circuit.
I wouldn’t call AMT a ribbon tweeter
@@neilsonlee3334 yeah I heard it’s a special tweeter but when you actually look at it closely, it just looks like a ribbon so hence the name
Thanks for your review! After I got into High End Audio, Adcom Power amp, Superphon Preamp & Vandersteen speakers, (the Vandersteens were not compatible). I started playing electric guitar and got into Vintage Point to Point amplifiers and vacuum tubes). I bought a vintage ST-70. If I can't find a Dynaco preamp, How would the Superphon sound? What other tube preamp should I look for? I am favoring Conrad Johnson Preamps. I am also flying to SF in Feb 2025 (for my birthday) to pick up a pair of Spendor SP-1's. The guy is selling his dad's stuff, he didn't give me a list, I'll have to wait and see! I have a good friend/technician, (here in Hawaii) who can do any mod/repairs. I would appreciate any help, thanks!
😂 The problem with Tube amps for me is I’m not getting any younger and 30 minutes warm-up’s, I could be outta the mood for music listening and on to three other hobbies for the day, like underwater basket weaving. 😳🤥🥴
I have the 1002 what a great amplifier I had a little hum problem I switched out the cable the noise is dead silence no fan noise at all great for home theater also
Most are bass heads, so box speakers for them. Open baffle for wides biggest sound stage and clearer music just bass is lacking.

Japanese listen to big JBLs in very small rooms. It is more a factor of treatment than size I guess. Big baffles in small room can be excellent at low level, filling the room completely.
@@chengo51 Yes, I’m very fond of the Japanese hifi culture particularly with their vinyl bars and 1930’s Altec horns. I have a video about Altec I’ll be posting with design drawings by a friend who an expert on Altec. I suppose it would depend on what JPL’s we are discussing. I suppose the room size and ability for a large speaker to function also has to do with design. The Altec’s use a very large horn which cover all the upper frequencies including the highest frequencies. In my situation this was not the case. I had two separate horns in my face at ear level. One was a squawker and the other, a horn tweeter. This caused me to hear two different frequency levels with certain music tracks. This wouldn’t happen with Altec horns. Regardless, I think you are correct with regard to certain larger designs.
Nice Sound but the Bass is missing on This Song I know so well on Both Speaker
I think you’ll be in for a bit of a surprise. I’m hoping you’ll see the follow-up video.
Hello, have you ever listened seriously to electrostatic speakers? I have owned many Magnepan speakers some of the big ones down to the LRS’s and in my opinion the electrostatics sound much more realistic. I am 67 years old and it started with numerous pairs of acoustats but when the went out of business I started my journey with probably over a hundred of different kinds and brands of speakers. Including Spatial open baffles, numerous Vandersteen’s, KEF’s , Eminent Technology panels, Tannoy’s, many ls3/5a versions (Falcon’s, Harbeths, Proacs, Chartwell’s , ATC’s)Zu’s, Klipsch’s, Elac’s, numerous Spendors and too many more brands to mention. I have four pairs I rotate in and out of the system now with three different amp setups, French Supravox Novas and Klipsch rp600II’s I use with tubes and some Elac Velas on dedicated stands , and some Martin Logan electromotion esl’s I use with a Yamaha as-2200 or Wyred 4 sound mono’s with a Freya tubed pre with expensive nos tubes. The point I am making is that with all the gear I have owned in my audiophile years the Martin Logan’s with the Yamaha integrated is the best sounding setup I have ever owned. I can honestly say that the ML’s under $3000 are the best speakers I have heard under $10,000. I have heard or owned most popular brands under $10,000. If you haven’t heard a good pair of electrostatics in an optimal setup you are missing out.
