This is AMAZING vs. This SUCKS: The Duality of Living Abroad
"I'm leaving and I'm never coming back!" Aht Aht... you sure about that?
In this video, we're diving into two opposing tales about leaving home and living abroad. I'm opening up about what went wrong with my moves to Colombia and China because I came across two Instagram Reels that compelled me to make this video! They both jumped off the screen at me for two different reasons. Watch and find out what they were!
We love a "Keep it 💯" girlie, and this video is full of raw, honest feelings about experiences as women who dared to leave the United States of America (and Australia) to try life abroad. Which end of the spectrum are you on? Let me know in the comments!

    Hi. First of all thank you for your videos and love for your channel. Very useful and clear. I'm from Colombia and I'm moving to Chonqing on September 4th. I'm from Colombia btw. It's not my first time living abroad but it's my first time ever outside living Latin America, so I'm kind of nevrous but also very excited about the experience. I will be studying a Master's degree at the Southwest University and I have to get to Beibei District once I arrive. Is it too far from the airport? How much a taxi could cost? Appreciate your help!!! Big thumbs and hearts to your content.

    This is where China is a lot like the US. We make monsters in America and then act surprised when bad things happen. It's strange to say but the cheapness of life and "honor codes" in a lot of Asian countries lead to TERRIBLE things. Imagine you could just marry who you wanted? There are millions of girl infanticides in China and India every year for cultural reasons...

    English teachers at after school are being pushed out by the govt. But the Chinese govt can't ban international and bilingual school. The Chinse govt cant easily shut down any after school english "school." And the govt has shut down many, due to the "double reduction policy." ANd has ban for profit english "schools." So those with a BEd, have ALOT more choices and opporunities and better packages. Regarding visa, it is easy to get a visa at international schools than an after school training center. Again, it has to do with your degree. Once the visa staff see you have a teaching license and a teaching contract with an international school, they arent likely to flag you. Whereas for training school, it can be denied easily!

  • @BobbyLoo-jr8ys
    @BobbyLoo-jr8ys 17 днів тому

    Training school and International school is not neck to neck in terms of packages. If that was the case, then many license teacher will look as training school, as it is easy, min. work and min prep and less politics. EF is a shitty english academy, they only care about their bottle line and l beleive their avg salary for foreign teacher was 10-14k Max, no housing! It is true, english instructions working at these school, do not have alot of time off. They are the most busy during winter and summer intensive and ARE not allow to take time off during the busy seasons. The manager knows this is the profit season. I believe the total number of days off per yr is 1 month, 12 days holidays + 10 days of your own, so it is about 22 days = 1 month. So, they work 11/12 month of the yr. International teachers work 8/12, but paid 12 month. Most after school workers that finish a yr, may or may not get bonus. But for international school, it is a guarantee they will get a bonus after 2 yrs.

    • @DualityIsAThing
      @DualityIsAThing 9 днів тому

      You'd be surprised at what training school packages used to look like. EF is the bottom of the barrel; it does not indicate the set up at all schools with that model. Also, you get what you negotiate, two teachers in the same school with the same experience could have dramatically different salaries because one negotiated better than the other. Things are different now, but I had an amazing package, (28K in a non-tier 1 city, ¥1900 rent, yearly completion bonuses, KPI bonuses ) most days I only worked 4-6 hours, and I vacationed nearly every month. It's all about preferences and negotiations! There is no one-size-fits-all all in China.

    • @BobbyLoo-jr8ys
      @BobbyLoo-jr8ys 9 днів тому

      @@DualityIsAThing That is true. At one training Center at SH, china, l got 45k per month after tax, including class B health insurance. At another, l got 30k/month with a Class C health insurance (i left after 10 month). It depends on the boss. Now l work at an international school, because l want the free kid's tution which cost 150k a year, with 40k /month after tax and 4 month paid holidays, paid in full. That is why for family with children, international school is the way to go, mainly because your children can get tuition free education at the school you;re working at, and annual flight allowance (8-15k, depending on the school) For TC, l worked 10-11 month of the yr as TC only gives you 10 days annual leave, 5 paid sick days (International is 10 paid), and about 11 days paid national holiday = a month off, some have flight and some do not. If there is flight allowance, it is less than 8k. So overall, l think international school is better, as there are more benefits. During summer and holiday, teachers can pick up side gigs, extra income, so with side gigs, a teacher from international school can easily earn 600k (after tax) or more in a given school yr.

  • @BobbyLoo-jr8ys
    @BobbyLoo-jr8ys 17 днів тому

    It is after school academy! Not alot of time off, compare to International school, which I have calculated, nearly 4 fully paid off. English academy doesn't pay alot. Some provides housing and some does not! I think the salary is about 20-30k before taxes. International school has generous benefits/package, couple with high salary, BUT require a BEd with yrs of experiences. If you have a family, usually insurance and increase in housing allowance are given. Best of all, tution is free. Furthermore, international school provides free breakfast and lunch for teachers. And some will even pay your entire family every yr to fly back home or just give you a travel allowance ranging from 7-15,000 rmb depending on the school. English Acadmies teachers are often not real teachers, as they are NOT certified and these bosses know that. As a result, there are alot of benefits given, as these boss know, they can easily find someone else. WIth a BEd in CHina, and your a foreigner and can speak Chinese, you strike GOLD. You are valuable, even to after school acadmies. THose with a BEd, should not work as an English teacher after school, as it is a waste of their time and most of all, their talent. The package are bad. International school invest heavily in teachers, as it is their profession. And the school knows this because it is NOT easy to sure a BEd/license teacher, as there are many international schools in China. So, these schools are competing for BEd teachers with better packages. THere are so many opportunites and good high paying salaries. One can work at ANY school; local, bilingual and international schools. And best of all, some of these parents will ask for extra classes from you, which you can charge high rate, because these parents know their child has fallen behind, and require extra tutoring services from you. You can charge 1-1.5k rmb per hour and some of these parents WILL pay up in class, easily.

    You should call the local police for being smacked on your butt. Sexual vioaltion is serious crime in china. Once you have the number of filing your application for investigation. The process is irreversible, one can't stop it until the sexual assailiant got caught. And it's easy peasy for cops to achieve their KPI.

I just started studying chinese but of course I have a very long way ahead till I can feel like I'm anywhere near fluent in it. I wanted to ask you - how much of a requirement would you say it is to have some certain level of chinese in order to stay there with a working visa for at least a year? I know some other more international destinations in China like Beijing or Shanghai would make it easier without being able to speak chinese but Chongqing and Chengdu areas have been my dreamed destination for so long now. And if I'm allowed a little last question, how hard would you say it is to find a job as a foreigner in Chongqing? 谢谢姐姐 Keep up the great content!!
