My name is Jonathan Young. I've been keeping fish tanks since I was about 10 years old. So I've been in the hobby for 20 plus years. Of course I'm like most; I started off with the common goldfish which evolved into raising fish to breed and first started out selling discus. I was around 20 when i started selling fish. I'm creating this channel to help other hobbyists, so hopefully I could teach people something. Maybe some of my videos can help someone who wants to manage their fish tank. One of my life goals is to open up my own pet store. I may talk about quite a bit but we are starting it a day at a time. When we do start selling, my lovely fans will be the first to here about it. I instituted something similar in my most recent tank. Multiple layers of clay and porous rock substrates beneath and above the soil, with a sand top layer. I specifically used crushed brick, as it's terra cotta based and even higher in iron, more thoroughly baked in order to reduce breakdown over time, and naturally porous moreso than other options to foster more bacteria. I believe it will last a very, very long time.
I am 2 weeks into it in my fiddler crab tank and it seems happy.. it is definitely growing strong on the land section, we'll see how the brackish water affects it long term

Thanks for sharing how it does from above ground to submerged, and vice versa. I'm planning on using this in a small backyard pond and will keep some potted for next season just in case. It's only $4 at my local Lowe's for a small plug

Fired clay is inert. It doesnt do anything with any ions. Pile of BS.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I agree with you. Mulm is inert once it is biologically broken down and does not harm the fish in any way. Also since I was a kid I have always kept water in buckets to gas off for a week or so before using it in my tanks and had never used dechlorinators and never had fish dying due to chlorine.
Super late here but how have you found using these flood lights? I have a 125g also and was thinking about buying 3 of the 50w lights myself. My current Amazon light isn't doing anything for my plants.

I know this was done awhile ago but just some info. The holes you see in your leaves are a potassium deficiency. You mentioned adding Java fern recently and it is a potassium hog. Maybe related.
Can u not just use florist red as it is made of clay and iron rich Because I live in uk and it is impossible to find natural clay cat litter

I know this video is very old, but I have to point out that this information is incorrect. I have kept these crabs for many years in both fresh and brackish set-ups and they live just as long and are just as healthy in fresh water as in brackish. You have their breeding pattern backwards aswell, they spend the majority of their lives in fresh water and migrate to brackish water to release their eggs. It is their young that require brackish water to mature, after which they too will head back to fresh water until they themselves reproduce. You are correct about them not being fully aquatic though, it is essential they have access to land. A floating "turtle dock" will suffice for 1 or 2 crabs in a pinch (no pun), but ideally they do need plenty of land to explore, and they will definitely need more than a dock if you have more than 3 in a tank. One more note: Males are extremely territorial, so only 1 male per tank. Otherwise the bigger one will 100% definitely hunt the smaller one until it kills it and if they are evenly matched they will rip each others limbs off. I hope this updated info is useful to someone.👍

Hi, just letting you know, this information is not 100% correct. I have kept these crabs for many years in both fresh and brackish setups, and they're perfectly fine in fresh water and will live just as long in it. They live in fresh water in the wild and only migrate to brackish water to release their eggs, as it is their young that require brackish conditions to mature. After which they will also return to fresh water until they themselves reproduce and the process repeats. So unless your customer is planning on breeding them (which is almost impossible in captivity), they're fine in freshwater. They are semi-terrestrial and do require access to land though, that part is correct. A floating island will do for 1 or 2 crabs, but if possible, the more land they have the better and any more than 2 will definitely need more land to avoid hostility. It is also very important that you only sell your customers 1 male per setup, as they are extremely territorial and will fight to the death otherwise. I hope that is helpful.

Hi I recently just got two red claw crabs. Have you had any success housing them with larger snails? I've seen people on both sides about it. I've been trying to do more research since PetSmart didn't even tell me they needed to be in brackish water and recommended some pellet food for them. I would like to get at least two Molly's and possibly some snails if they can all get along

How do I transition these guys to brackish water? My two I got today are living in freshwater. I’d like for them to breed. So I’m assuming they need the salt water for that.
Man. I just got two. Male and female. They told me they don’t live in brackish water, they live in fresh water…. Am I killing them using fresh tap water that’s treated? Or should I add some salt to the water?! I’m from Ontario Canada…

I love my golden creeping Jenny. Bought it at a pet store as a bundle for 3$. My pet store employees have no idea what is what so sometimes i get awesome deals sold as "bundles". How do you trim this plant though? Do you uproot it and plant the tops like other stem plants?

What is your kitty litter made from. In South Africa it's bentonite clay. Is that safe for aquariums.
I would also like to know. Im also interested in using cat litter as a layer under my sand. Martons is bentonite but they don't say if it is baked or not and I wonder if it will go mushy or stay hard. The only other brand I could find in South African stores is Lopis but they don't say clay or baked on the bag. The only other cat litter are the crystal types.
@@terrig5704 I tried it. It goes mushy but doesn't cause a mess unless you stir it up. But I didn't really see any positive results. Plain pool sand with root tabs did better.
@@ianferguson4728 thanks Ian. You won't believe me but pool filter sand is what I plan on using. I have watched so many videos on substrates for planted aquariums and it is all confusing and all the fancy branded soils are just too expensive especially if you want to do a thick layer of soil.
@@terrig5704 You can also try a slow flow undergravel plenum. Either normal flow or reverse flow. But very slow flow. I'm also going to try leca balls crushed as a bottom layer and cap with plain gravel.
@@ianferguson4728 Thank you Ian. Yes Im also thinking along those lines with the undergravel plenum. The size undergravel filter I need is just out of stock. Then I'm also thinking of using some clinofish in the substrate mix. It is a zeolite mineral made in SA. They use it a lot in pond filtration and is not that expensive and comes in large 25kg bags. Thanks for the advice.
How long would you 'gas' a 32g bucket for water changes without de-chlorinator? What about the toxic metals de-chlorinators remove? Great video! thanks.

Those bubbles coming out of the substrate could also be N2 - since nitrogen gas is the end result of the nitrogen cycle
