      Major congrats for getting it installed! I don't remember having any trouble with the PS/2 mouse I used. A USB mouse could be troublesome without the USB drivers installed and operating correctly. Somewhere, I think I showed how to change the config file to boot the installed system. It has been quite some time since I played around with this. If I didn't show it in this video then you can consult the website with the link in the description. There should be installation instructions that will walk through the process.

    Hi how do we burn kernal to a cd ? total newbie here :) where i cand find a cd image of kernal ?

    • @VernesMisadventures
      @VernesMisadventures 2 дні тому

      There is a link in the description to all the resources. You will download an image (ISO file). Windows 10 used to have an option to burn an image to disk, however it was removed in later builds. In Linux, I am quite fond of the Brazero disk utility. It works quite well and is easy to use. Mac Os will give you the option to burn to disk if you ctrl+click on the ISO file. Another option would be to use dd in the linux or apple terminal. If none of these options made any sense to you then I would suggest searching UA-cam for how to burn a disk image. I hope this helps.

    I've got a couple of questions. First that's a modern copy yes? Because the way those held data and worked, they shouldn't have been able to hold it more than five years my God I give it 10 so how did that hold the data if it's old? The floppy disk just can't maintain that as it's written with magnetics not hard copied. Excuse poor written structuring if you would voice dictating

    • @VernesMisadventures
      @VernesMisadventures 9 днів тому

      Yeah. They taught me that in college too. I have many floppy disks from the '80s that still work, even though they allegedly should not. I got this set of disks a year or two ago from a seller on eBay. They were probably written shortly before they were sold. Much of the old software has been archived on various websites. I made digital copies of these disks shortly after receiving them so I can write new ones if and when they fail. That said, they don't make floppy disks anymore so even new floppy disks are actually quite old. Thankfully, newer technology exists to use the old software on a floppy disk emulator, like the Gotek in the Model 4's lower drive bay.

      It's a Model 3 case. It was upgraded to Model 4 at some point prior to my ownership. I'm told that Radio Shack offered an upgrade package that included a new case badge, a new motherboard, and a new keyboard. This program uses Model 3 mode but the computer is indeed a Model 4. It runs Model 4 software. It has 64k of RAM installed and it has open sockets to expand it to 128k. I wish I knew more about its history. It would be nice to know whether it was a Radio Shack upgrade or something cobbled together in later years. It's kind of unique and I love that about it.

    Hello Vern. I've got a Portable II of my own and need to replace the keyboard cable. Might you have a pin out of the keyboard cable? I have a cable from a similar keyboard that has a 6 pin square connector at the motherboard side. I just need to know how to wire the cable at the keyboard end. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

    • @VernesMisadventures
      @VernesMisadventures Місяць тому

      I don't have a pinout to share with you but you can determine which pins go where if you have your old cable. Just use an ohm meter to determine which wire colors correspond to what pins on your connector and wire the new cable accordingly. That is how I did mine.

    I can't say enough about this machine, I'm sad that I let mine sit in a corner for 5 years before I realized it was so sluggish because of the processors it was shipped with. After swapping up to the X5690's its fast enough to use over an M1 Mac. Side note, it runs Linux wonderfully.

    @VernesMisadventures ...... Hey Verne. I think that's a 2009 (4,1) that has been flashed to 5,1 which is fine. They are the same machine. I can tell because the processors in the 5,1 are not clamped down. They just sit in there and they're held down by the heat sink. A good NVMe boot drive upgrade is well worth the money. It'll make that thing LIGHTNING FAST! I have two of these machines and I upgraded both to the max. I have a 2009 (4,1 flashed to 5,1) with upgraded (2x) 3.33 Ghz Zeons, 96 GB Ram, 1 TB NVMe Sonoma boot drive, and (3x) 1 TB NVMe drives in a RAID. ...... The other one is a 2010 (5,1) with upgraded (2x) 3.46 Ghz Zeons, 96 GB Ram, 2 TB NVMe Sonoma boot drive, and (3x) 2 TB NVMe drives in a RAID.

    • @VernesMisadventures
      @VernesMisadventures 3 місяці тому

      Well. . . Since you have a lot more of these machines than I do, I'll take your word for it. Thanks for the info! I have another video where I install an NVMe drive. I didn't have the money to buy a fancy card like the MacFiver or something so I only have the one NVMe but, even without the super fast RAID, it sped my machine up significantly and editing with it is much better. I found 96 GB of Samsung RAM on eBay and upgraded the RAM as well. For no more than what I have in this thing, I'm very happy with it.

    • @The-Weekend-Warrior
      @The-Weekend-Warrior 16 днів тому

      @@VernesMisadventures Simple. If the processors have an IHS on them, it's a 5,1. If the processors are delidded, it's an upgraded 4,1. That is the only difference. In theory, the 4,1 processor tray could be swapped out for a 5,1 and be just fine, however, I've never seen anybody do it.

    What is the hose I need for the bottom of the Y connecting to the heater core hose. My hose is missing from the bottom of the Y

    • @VernesMisadventures
      @VernesMisadventures 4 місяці тому

      I just finished watching the video because it has been quite some time since I made it. There are three hoses. One goes to the bottle, one goes to the heater core, and one goes to the block. A new Y-hose comes with everything but the heater hose so, if you buy a new Y-hose, the missing hose will not be an issue whatsoever. You will need to source a clamp and you should be good to go. If you are only trying to replace the hose that goes to the block, you will have to get a heater hose of the correct size and clamp it in place at both ends. It can be done this way. I'm not sure what size it will be. I suppose you could take the bottle with you to the parts store. If the parts person is helpful, they should be able to help you get the right size (diameter) hose. Alternatively, you could measure the diameter of the tubes at the bottle and the block and, hoping you measured correctly, buy a length of heater hose that will fit. Make sure you buy more length than you need and you can trim it to fit. I've done repairs like this many times and they will get you up and running. That said, it is always better to properly replace parts so that the vehicle remains easily serviceable in the future. There will be no need to reinvent the wheel every time something breaks. As the sketchy repairs add up over the years, it becomes quite an adventure to fix the simplest thing because the factory replacement part no longer fits and you have to undo another person's "fix" to repair the current problem. I hope this helps.

    • @zach2577
      @zach2577 4 місяці тому

      @VernesMisadventures is the hose that goes to the heater core one solid hose? There's like a 3 foot gap between the y and the heater core hose so I'm wondering if they cut it or if there is supposed to be a bridge between the y and heatercore hose

      The jumper needs to be at S0. The most important settings in the ff.cfg file are as follows: interface = ibmpc host = pc-dos As long as those are set, it should just. . . work. If you have problems with screen rotation or font size, etc. there are settings that can adjust those for you. My best advice is simply, "If it ain't broke--don't fix it!"
