I try a wide a angle lens - Canon RF-S 10-18mm Lens - Landscape Photography
Today's video is a quick one. Simply put, I received a wide-angle lens I've wanted for some time. This was a trip to the coast where I give it a go. I felt some seascape, landscape, and whatever else would make a good photo. Not only did I enjoy playing with wide-angle photography, I will certainly be doing it again. @@livan_explorer It's a great lens. Very sharp and versatile given it's a zoom. It's biggest fault for me is the F/8 at 400mm. I would like to get my background more blown out which can be very difficult to achieve on this lens. It's low light capabilities are lacking, also due to the F/8. The good news is it has great image stabilization allowing you to lower the shutter speed and still achieve sharp images. Some examples of that are in this video. Overall opinion is if you're on a budget it's a great lens. If you have the money, go for something better.

    Action Macro! Yes, both Image Stabilization and AI Servo are helpful, at all distances, all the way down to macro. I now use AI Servo, virtually always, unless I am locked-down onto a tripod. It took me a while to sort this out, because, at the time I started macro photography, in 2010, the mantra had long been that Image Stabilizsation was “useless” at close range. My first step was when I bought a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS, in late 2010, to use on my 40D, after have been using a non-stabilized Tokina 100mm macro lens. The macro task, at the time, was forensic/evidentiary/crime scene photography, while on duty, and flowers and general photography during personal time. This developed into an interest in the insects and wee beasties living on and around the flowering plants. I added a Canon 7D, at the end of 2010, but, in spite of it being an upgrade in AF capability, I still clung to the old formula for macro-distance photography, for quite q while. Somewhere along the way, it hit me in the head, that I should be using AI Servo, at close range, even at near-macro and macro focusing distance, to compensate for my movements, as well as subjects’ movements, whether those subjects were flowers swaying in the breeze, crawling insects, or, a traumatized, living, breathing assault victim. I do remember reading Ming Thein writing that he used AF-C, when doing product photography with Nijkon cameras, but do not recall whether that was what prompted me to try AI Servo at macro distance, with Canon DSLRs, or was an affirmation that I was already on the right track. (Nikon AF-C = “Auto-Focus, Continuous,” and is equivlent to Canon’s AI Servo.) The next big tech step happened when I upgraded from the 7D to the 7D Mark II, in 2014. I do not recall whether I had started using AI Servo at macro distance, by that time, but, the much-improved AF capability was certainly helpful. When I later added 5Ds R and then 5D Mark IV cameras, AF kept getting better. (I have not yet added any R cameras or RF lenses. No rush.)

    Not sure if IS is noticeable much on macro and close up photography. It is very noticeable using telephoto lens, which is mainly what IS is generally designed to reduce shake. Nothing is perfect, but especially for us old guys, it really helps since we have a hard time holding the camera steady in handheld situations.

    • @foto-spective
      @foto-spective 3 місяці тому

      I would definitely agree that it's not perfect, but I do think it's getting better. It certainly helps me out. My keepers go up about 30% while using it.

    Thanks for this great video. I'm also having the same problems with camera shake. Is there anything I could do to reduce camera shake ? TIA

    • @foto-spective
      @foto-spective 3 місяці тому

      As someone who shakes a lot, I've tried many things. Having a lens with really good image stabilization does help get you more keepers. The best thing to do is finding the best position for you and moving the insect to where you need it. For me, it's laying down on my stomach and having my elbows planted firmly in the dirt. I'll bring the camera to my forward. This can be tricky because of moving the insect, but when it works I get some of my best pictures.

    Awesome video! Also very surprising results especially with the latter tests, I was not sure if IS would do anything in the final one! BTW - Would be curious to see a comparison sometime and your thoughts on the switch to Canon regarding Macro and birding - what you think between the 2 systems! I am constantly on the fence considering a complimentary system and wonder what differences I might expect. Most of what I see online are pretty stuck in one camp or the other, you have good experience putting both systems to the test so really curious what you would recommend.

    • @foto-spective
      @foto-spective 3 місяці тому

      Thank you! I was actually rather surprised by the results myself. A comparison video would be fun, though I don't think the cameras themselves give different results. It's the lenses I've switched to giving the biggest difference. The lenses I've used with the Canon R10 all have image stabilization. Those I used with the E-M1 Mark II did not.

    • @BMadPhoto
      @BMadPhoto 3 місяці тому

      @@foto-spective Ah thanks for the reply, that makes sense - since I have the IS at least with the macro this kit I have probably makes sense to stick with (and ther 90mm was so expensive :/) - maybe an upgrade would be nice though to a bigger sensor since I do not have a kit yet built out really for birding and wildlife (I have the 74-300 olympus lens - not sure if I want to invest in a better m4/3 glass and body or change to a larger system+glass if I get more into wildlife and birds. Maybe you shared this already in a past video, how did you decide on the jump to the R10 for wildlife?

    • @foto-spective
      @foto-spective 3 місяці тому

      @@BMadPhoto Couple things that made me decide. Canon cameras feel better in my hand. I was always accidentally hitting buttons while trying to hold the E-M1 Mark II. I also like the Canons menu better. The E-M1 Mark II can have a rather confusing menu. I seem to enjoy Canons colors better. The most important reason though is the lenses. You have all the older EF lenses that are now cheaper. The RF lenses are awesome quality , and Sigma plus Tamron will now be making RF lenses. You can also get longer focal lengths with Canons crop senor. A 300mm on MF3's is 600mm FOV, but 400mm on a Canon crop sensor is 640mm FOV.

    It was nice to see another real person using one of those F11 lenses. And the story with the kite was entertaining. What a great bird! I have the same problems of focusing with the R7 in Video. It is amazing that the camera would not focus on a big black shape in the middle of the frame. 😆 The good news for me is that I just checked my video settings, and I was actually in human detection in my 3 custom buttons, and human detection in manual mode as well....... since more than 12 months now. 🤣

    • @foto-spective
      @foto-spective 4 місяці тому

      Thankfully I don't have it set to human detection. Although that may not matter. I believe the camera detects humans and animals regardless of its settings. One gets prioritized over the other. With the f11, my ISO would reach 12800 even in mid-day sun. I couldn't take it anymore and got rid of that lens. I prefer the 100-400mm and don't have any problems getting closer to my subject. That said, I don't think it would have bothered everyone. It just didn't fit my style of shooting.

Now I have about 1100 images to go through LOL - hope I walk away with 1 or 2 LOL - Love that spider shot! What was it you wanted to shoot that you had not seen before but ran out of battery?

    Well that's what I have needed in my macro photography, two little helpers. You have some beautiful kids. And macro photography is a great way to introduce them to nature. Finally, I totally agree with you on the unnecessary overuse of flash macro shooting. There are many other methods to use natural lighting, such as reflectors, diffusers etc. Using a flash might gain you a little on DOF, but the harsh contrast is the downside. Besides photography is subjective, do it your way.

    • @foto-spective
      @foto-spective 4 місяці тому

      Thank you! Photography certainly is subjective. I've also found the flash amplifies chromatic aberration in certain lenses. Like that tartisan 60mm I tried out.

    Wow forget all the gear, I need some helpers like you got there to help find subjects - great job and team work :) - These are great thoughts BTW - My favirois shots from last year was early morning no flash highish f stop :) Also funny how many comments tell me when I do use flash to not do it the way I am and get a AK diffuser - I recently attended a seminar with a award winning macro photographer that doesnt use flash at all and has been published in magazines - so I take a lot of the comments with a grain of salt - lots of ways to do things. Also what is the goal, max depth of field clinical photos or more artistic images - something I have been thinking about recently formulating for a video soon - you really captured by thoguhts here really well though!

      These kids are so into it right now. I'm hoping as they get older it will still be an enjoyment for them. Totally agree on asking what the goal is. My style has been sliding more towards a very shallow depth of field and natural light. F/5.6-7.1 seems to be my sweet spot.

    I found an old bridge-camera for really good price. It has 40x zoom and 1cm minimum focus distance in Macro mode. Can I use it for Macro Photography? Model: Fujifilm Finepix S8200

    • @foto-spective
      @foto-spective 4 місяці тому

      If it focuses at 1 cm then it can do macro, although it wouldn't be the best choice. Bridge cameras tend to struggle a bit in low light. Meaning you would likely need a good flash set-up. The very short minimum focusing distance means you will also scare away many of your subjects. It would be like my Olympus 30mm macro lens. I should also point out that I've never used a bridge camera for macro. I'm going off what I've read about them. If you're new to macro and are wanting to give it a try. I say go for it. If it doesn't do what you need, then simply look for something else.

      @@foto-spective Thank you so much man! I'm your new sucscriber. They are also selling a "10x macro thread" for this camera. I'm going to buy the camera itself for 52$ and they are selling that attachment for 42$. What is that? Is that even worth it? And can I take macro photos of skittish insects from distance? 40x(24-960mm) Lens has 45cm minimum focus distance in normal telephoto mode.

    • @foto-spective
      @foto-spective 4 місяці тому

      @@cesurkarakus209 A macro thread is basically a closeup filter. Most of them are not great quality. A better option would be the Raynox 250 that goes for about $75. It's good quality. Unfortunately the Raynox or any close up filter may not work on something with a 1 cm minimum focusing distance. It's one of those products you would have to try on your setup in order to know for sure. If you're photographing small subjects, you'll likely need to reach the 1 cm minimum focusing distance. On larger subjects you might be able to pull back just a bit. Thanks for the sub 👍

      I've been practicing with it, and using a point of reference does help. I do feel the lenses IS moves off my subject when I'm handholding. It's actually happening often enough to be quite aggravating.

    Nice video, well done! 😀 Personally I would have gone for the RF800 and skip the 200-800. I am thinking, the RF100-400 with the RF800 is a good combo that allows you to shoot from very very close, up to 400mm, and even crop a bit if needed, then switch to the 800 when the subject is too far. But that's just me... Anyone has his choices and reasons. ✌

    • @foto-spective

      Thanks and I'll admit that I was leaning towards the 800mm to begin. I would have gone that direction if I photographed more small birds. Even at 600mm heat haze is a struggle. It's always hot where I am. Even in the early morning. I'm now leaning towards saving for an older ef 500mm prime. Won't be surprised if some new lenses get released that change my mind. 😎👍
