      @jackburton307 for someone that doesn't maintain the right lateral path, this will keep them correct. Bent over laterals are the best application of this, though. I really like it to keep my form. It's really just I change up, and you can do good work with just dumbbells too..

      @codygreen1832 I bought the rubber coated steel weights there. They came from the vendor "Ormise" and were delivered fast, like 5 days. I bought 2-25, 2-15 ,2-10, and 2-5s for 99.00. I was going to get the whole set it was like 260 but now I see they raised it to 350 but it does include shipping. I am happy with the weights I got. They were boxed shrink wrapped and had at least 4 nylon bands around the box.

      @mcelhinn Місяць тому

      @shatikaz The quality in perspective and respective of price. The pads could be of better quality, not that they are bad, but they could be thicker. They don't hurt or anything, and the vinyl and stitching are fine. They just don't look impressive like a REP but close to Titan. I expect these all will last for years and years of use but are not heavy gauge steel like you would expect from REP but again, they are much less expensive. They look great assembled. If they fit your budget, don't be afraid. Because they will take you to strength just like Rogue or REP. If you have a bigger budget, buy the heavier builds, but only if you are going to be doing this 10 -20 years and the money wouldn't be better spent somewhere else. I mentioned Parabody equipment in a video. They were made in the late 80s and they never wore out. I still see them a lot and in good working condition. They were built on lighter gauge 2x2 frames...

    • @mcelhinn
      @mcelhinn Місяць тому

      @JRake32 No, I'm afraid my family history and genetics would make that a bad choice. I have a friend in Colorado who is doing a TRT therapy. He got stronger and said he felt better. It makes me envious thinking of something to renew you because not using anything means sore achy days and definitely diminished attainment of muscle. When you stop working out at this age, strength seems to drop quickly, but we do come back. So nope, never did anything, and man I wish someone would bet me 50,000 to prove it because I could use the money lol.. I think patience is the biggest factor in getting strong. We want it to transform like we are 25-30 and it's a lot more stubborn persistence getting there. Nutrition is so important to strength as we age.

    Well said. I agree that a lot of hi-tech "name brand" equipment is often overkill. The icon for this, of course, is the practicality of the simple dumbbell. The weight of a dumbbell is what it is, period. Whether it's a Rogue or a chrome dumbbell or whatever, there's a lot of superficiality in anything other than a focus on its weight. Per hiking, my wife and I went on a hike today (after a lot of months off) up a local volcano and she found a nice deer antler. Such hikes in the wilderness, as you well know, really invigorate. And there's that spiritual dimension that can align with the raw physical. Good luck on your second future You Tube channel.

    Thanks, Mac, very much. You know, you've got quite some accomplishments yourself. As an older guy, you're not only phenomenally strong, you're in really, really good shape. At some point, I'll give up the strength chase and try to lose weight and sculpture down to something like you. (I hope). But your own accomplishment of both great strength without letting your body shape slide away from you is really impressive. It'll be interesting to watch where you go with your own motivations.

    You've got an interesting assortment of gym equipment in your garage. What's your criteria for selecting this or that? There are also sorts of gym equipment out there. During the pandemic, when I started my home gym it was tough to find anything to purchase, new or used. So, then, I started out buying a rare few things new. But, since, I've got all kinds of things second-hand. And cheap. I got a Rogue rack that, with its accoutrements, costs over $1,700 new for $800 (and it was one year old) from a guy who was getting a divorce and to get rid of it fast. I got a $1500 cable weight system for $200 from a guy who bought it from a fire station. I bought an old Smith machine and a 340-lb calf raise machine for a combined total of $175 from a high school auction. I bought two 100-lb and two 90 lb Ivanko dumbbells: 380 pounds for a total of $180. Ivanko still sells these exact pro-style dumbbells -- for a combined $959 plus tax plus shipping. Etc. Etc. Etc. There are lots of second-hand deals out there, but it takes time to find them. How do you find room for all your machines in your garage? Do you keep selling and buying different stuff? Are there things that you find that you rarely use and get rid of? I still keep my eyes open for interesting stuff -- I recently bought a "battle rope" at a thrift shop for $11 and a 60-lb weighted vest for a fraction of what it cost new. Am I going to use those things? We'll see. Beyond mere exercising, I've always been a "collector" and, thanks to the pandemic, I find myself drowning in a new hobby. On a fixed income, the way I'm financing all this is to slowly sell off my lifetime collection of books (some valuable), replacing walls of books in my garage with weightlifting stuff, including a few "vintage" items. Do you have any interest in that? Collecting "old" "vintage" "antique" gym stuff? You're one strong dude with an interesting home gym, in any case.

    Great work. Question, please: what's your experience per the difference between doing curls with a barbell (as here) versus dumbbells? You prefer barbells? Why?

    • @mcelhinn
      @mcelhinn 3 місяці тому

      I had a partial bicep tear doing shoulder press dumbbells once. I was dropping a 60 lb DB to my side to unload and felt something buzz like I hit my funny bone lol. Didn't think much of it but later noticed a little concave spot at the top of my bicep. So long story short I just feel safer dropping the ez bar back down to unload. That said I still do DB presses but I use my DB holders so I'm not dropping them. Side note I was taking an antibiotic cipro when that happened and found out later there is a correlation of ruptured tendon and that antibiotic. Best not to lift if taking that medication.

    • @mcelhinn
      @mcelhinn 3 місяці тому

      One more thing, when I do a max weight, I will overload by about 25 lb on each side and do a few lockouts without even unracking the bar over me. Feel it helps me get that initial burst when I drop the weight back down my real goal attempt that day. You can also just set your safeties up high, so your range is just the few inches for lockout. I mean, when you think about it, it's like people doing floor dumbbell presses to get over plateaus. Tricks in arrow quiver at this age..and a few arrows too..

      I look at it like this, the stand alone has the upper and lower movements. It has weight holders and movement is smooth. I wish the steel were a little heavier gauge overall but most likely for the weights I will be using its fine. They make a version that fits a 1" hole rack, It sells for about 169 and tax. It just pins to your power rack and has a clamp nut to clamp it on. The movement is also good but it is one set of bar handles so you mount it high for standing and take it off and mount it low for the bent over version. The one I ordered , the machine welds are pretty sloppy looking but solid. It is the KANG model sold on Amazon.I did kind of a quick review of it here on UA-cam. I ended up giving away the KANG model and kept the stand alone Syedee brand. Syedee's welds are cleaner and its a nice piece. I like it. I also paid more like 409 for it at the time. Then again anything I was comparing it too at the time was over a thousand dollars. I liked using the one at the gym so now I own one, a little lighter build than commercial for sure but serves the purpose well. Lastly I happen to catch this Temu sight when they were first carrying Syedee. It was more like 284 dollars in that initial offering. Since I already had one I opted for some other pieces at those kinds of prices. Looking back I wished I had got one for my sons gym at that price. 320 still seems like a good buy though. Amazon has them and also Walmarts online site sells them.

      This machine isolates well, and you will feel a pump. Even myself at 65 ...I wish it was a heavier gauge build, but with weights on the holders it's steady and the price is reasonable. It's along the lines of the pump you get with heavy swings but a nice change up from partial swings.

I will say, in regards to the linear bearings- I removed the carriage- used a retainer clip tool and was able to remove all four bearings out. I greased the inner channels of the bearings with royal purple synthetic grease. After reassembling, I used the leg press continuously to let the excess grease to squeeze out. After cleaning it all up, the noise greatly reduced and the motions/movements were much smoother.
