Boss Metalcore in a Pedal I was surprised how well the Boss ML2 held up as a distortion pedal. Usually they fart out or sound super shrill but I was able to get some usable tones out of this one. Radio!
I have an rme babyface pro. I don't have an option for 13 db but I can set it to +4db and add an additional 9 db of gain in the control software. Is that essentially the same as your RME interface?
Nah unless there was an actual physical continuous rotary encoder to work with give me the vertical or horizontal sliders any day over any skeuomorphic graphical control. The only other thing I can ask for with the HX Edit/Helix Native interface is clicking on a parameter and modulating the value with up/down, left/right/ page up/down buttons.
I hate the sliders 🤣, can’t get into it. Modulation stuff would be handy. I think that’s close to how fractal edit works you can right click on things
Levels for Line 6 UX1 and M-Audio M-Track Solo ?
nirvana 🤢🤮
Just curious. Those guys who did tons of factory/artist presets for ndsp etc know about it?
I doubt we’d ever truly know. I’d honestly say it’s 50/50. I’m sure they were given rough guides but who knows what their approval and checking policy is like. Haven’t heard anyone talk about the presets having gain issues but who knows At least when there’s hardware like the QC they can all stick to that spec and it’s easy to account for
For me i've found that using my own IR really has opened up a lot of the amp models in the tmp. But the stock ones are pretty great as well but people don't want to tweak them to really open it up. Great job on building the tone man fucking wicked.
It’s funny seeing how many people instantly dismiss the TMP. It honestly rips for punk and metal as good as anything else out there. If I was still gigging I’d be stoked to use the TMP…. Certainly a lot easier to carry around and tweak on the fly than my axefx2 I was using 🤣
Whenever I see this smug "Boomer" term I just wanna say f#%k off and scroll on. #NoLikeForYou
Story so far <3
Nice review. I personally miss that the output is mono. I personally like using external IR plugins since they offer the possibility to match each cabinet to each side
Yeah I mix and match this stuff. Sometimes I want it all in one with nam universal and other times it’s just easier to load up nam standard and something like cabinetron. No silver bullet yet, just depends what I’m doing
Brutal video man!! Sick skillz and riffzzzz! . I have been using this bad boy forever! Classic and one of the best pedals out there... Saludos desde Colombia!! 🇨🇴
Legend thanks 💪💪💪
I've heard of people using the ML-2 as a boost in front of the crunch channel, or the distortion channel with the gain turned down a bit, with the gain turned low to almost off and the volume dimed.
Yeah it definitely works wonders on gaining up clean and medium gain things. I ran it here into a clean channel and it’s pretty damn convincing for a reasonably cheap pedal
for some reason i can not figure this out im thinking maybe my settings are off please help

what about a facebook group for bass players who like punk rock pizza rolls?

They’re balaguer pickups. They remind me of bareknuckles. Bright passive humbuckers, very cool stuff

Can you also use it as a preamp, straight in your amps return?
Haven’t tried it but I’m sure it would do the trick, it’s that kind of pedal
Surely the FM3 is the best tool for live shows?
Up there with the best for live for sure! If we’re talking about gigging it’s one of, if not the best overall setup
Subbed and awesome for highlighting this group ! Some absolute tone monsters on that group that I absolutely love.
Yeah ive been smashing 90s punk all weekend 🤣
I was lucky enough to be invited into that group early on by a friend and fellow 90's punk bass player. It's been amazing seeing how the whole thing's blown up over the last few months and all the love shared and going around, and great for gear nerds!
Yeah it’s rad 🛹 🍕
Great video! thanks for taking the time to make this.
Great video! I’m a drummer, but a moderator on Punk Rock Bass players. I took the photos of Joe Raposo and my cousin, Tanner. They’re going in to business making custom basses. :) I also created a Punk Rock Drummers group as well.
Oh man congrats on all of it so rad! Great photos as well and those basses looked awesome
@@ampspedalspickupsthank you!
I've been loving the group too. Cool to see this video pop up in my suggestions. You didn't even mention that Mass Giorgini had posted there. He played in Squirtgun and Screeching Weasel. He's also a record producer who's produced bands like Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, and Anti-Flag.
Oh man I had like 5-6 more that I ended up cutting for time cause it was just me going…. Woooow…. Woooow 🤣🤣🤣 I saw him there, super cool
One question can you change profiles with something like a boss footswitch?
For amp sims? Just need a midi pedal of some kind, not sure boss stuff does midi
How do you interface your guitar to the laptop and is the output sound through an amp/amp box?
I’ve got an rme interface. Used to have an audient, both do the trick. Output just to speakers/monitors (I’m using kali lp-6’s but anything works). I do have a separate output that can goto an amp/cab but 99% of the time the sound is just going to speakers for normal room levels
@ thank you for taking the time to respond.
Good video! I just bought it and can't wait to test it out this weekend. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it sounds with one of the custom builds I'm working on right now, too. How do you think this compares with some of the others on the market (Brainworx versions of the ENGL amps, or Amped stuff, or Neural DSP stuff)?
Probably on par with neuraldsp, just different I guess. Has a savage amount of gain on tap which is the main thing, no shortage of chonks
Those are most probably IRs where the pedal has the fancy cab modeling...so, there should be a major difference in tone. IRs are boring after a while...I have the OX stomp, that thing is so good, hope they do this as a plugin soon. From listening to this demo, I think it's IRs, there is no info on the net and all people testing on YT are paid and offer no real info on the topic.
It’s a pretty good sim. I was close to buying the pedal and I’m now happy I didn’t. Kind of cool for a more vintage Marshall sound but it’s not often I reach for it I don’t think the irs are that special. If it’s a quick playthrough I’ll leave them in there but if I was doing something a bit more serious I’d probably disable theirs and use some other ones. Not sure if there’s “mojo” behind them, also haven’t heard anything
I use all of it. Something like the FM9 is nice because you can have patches that match songs. It also has a Setlist feature. Thing is, they are all different. Sonically, they can all get close. Plug ins will require a midi controller to change presets. FM9 gives you gobs of power and 9 buttons to press. My pedal board is GREAT but I cannot change a complex patch with a single press. FM9 is consistent- you will know exactly what tone(s) you are getting. To record, I use Reaper and Neural DSP. For mucking around in my other room, I use a pedalboard. I essentially have two boards- one acoustic and one electric. My Godin has both outputs so I can blend- sounds epic. I use a Trio+ that adds drums and bass. Cymbals sounds best out of studio monitors- not guitar amps so I have two monitors using a AB/Y pedal on the acoustic side of the house.
Some nice setups there... and yeah I think everything shines in the right time and place. FM3/9 great for gigging, NDSP great as amp sims in Reaper etc, nice one.
I sold it after trying a quad cortex. Very happy i did. Much easier to use and sounds just as good if not better.
I have the deepest respect for fractal and will inevitably grab an axe3 or axe4 if it comes out. But the blinders the fractal community have are pretty insane. It’s hard to deny how easy, fun and approachable a quad cortex or tonemaster pro is in comparison. Things might be lacking 1-5% in the realm of authenticity but it takes no time to build a rock solid patch with effects and dial in the tone you want. The usability of a quad cortex with the in depth modelling of a fractal would be my utopia, but I equally like what the others are doing out there
I think STL tones would bring it to the next level if they would also allow NAM captures in ToneHub. This would be my absolute dream platform. I already own several packs, Colin Richardson, Mark Lewis etc but I would really love to have NAM in it.
Would be handy!
Great video! What song plays in the background at the start?
I pay for envato for video assets and it’s one of their metal songs, I use it pretty often in videos (can’t remember the name). But yeah essentially stock music not a band… riffing tune
its because a real amp is using big 12 inch speakers and pushing air, so always gonna feel different in the room. in the mix however nobody knows and anyone who says they can tell is full of BS cos the software is so good now ,with cab impulse repsonses etc .
100% spot on Amp sims with an IR sound like amps captured with a mic I also reckon amp sims blasted through a power amp into a cab mostly sound like a real amp blasted through a cab, at least it’s a more even playfield when comparing them in the right scenarios.
what is the tuning of the guitar??
Drop A
would you gig with this software?
If you get the pedal and load it all on there then you don’t need to look at the software unless you change things around, so the pedal would be ok (they have their own quirks but are usable) I’d never gig with a laptop running this tonex software thougj
@@ampspedalspickups Thanks, I am looking for a solution that can do vocal and guitar in to a FRFR setup. I see the headrush prime seems like the only real option, but not sure the quality of patches. I like the tonex app sounds, but I agree its a bit buggy and something about the guitar going through an audio interface no matter what I do just doesnt sound right going to any amp or FRFR amp. Thoughts?
Not my wheelhouse but I have heard guys use them and like them, would have to dive into user videos and make sure it all works as expected. I know vocal units are pretty expensive on their own so an all in one is pretty cool. In theory you could do that stuff with an FM3 or Helix and be clever with routing things, but I'd imagine the headrush has a friendly layout for it all
FAS will probably never make a plugin version of their modeling. It's counterproductive for them, it will be a compromise, the modeling is already at peak quality with nothing in the market even challenging it and it wouldn't make sense to have it pirated by everyone. Also this comparison with plugins is meaningless. If you instantly like a plugin tone without tweaking you could just as easily instantly like a FAS preset from the hundreds it offers. That's no argument. And a plugin has a very specific use and it's what you describe though personally i don't know where this expectation that a recorded guitar tone should be tweaked post-print comes from. It's a very specific fad that only gets applied by amateur or semi-amateur mixing engineers and only in the metal genre. Everyone else records guitar as it was recorded for years and there is no problem with that. You should get your tone and then fit it into the mix without chopping it down into "minced meat" to its basics. IMO for 1000 bucks to be able to have all those studio quality effects, 300+ expertly modeled amps and all the routing and I/O options you could use is a no brainer.
Strive for something better I say. Digital is digital, a plugin should be an easy port and opens up the user base exponentially. The most modern version of ilok plugins don’t get cracked so they’ll be safe on that front. Recording DIs and using plugins or reamping is nothing new, been around for decades. Plugins have just come a long way in the last 5-6 years closing that gap of hardware digital vs plugin digital
@@ampspedalspickups I don't think FAS is willing to compromise into making a plugin. Developing for their own specific hardware is much more efficient and yields more performance out of if and in the end better results. As for the reamping it used to be a solution to correct problems in the tracks or for someone who didn't have the equipment necessary or desired to send the DIs somewhere to be reamped. Nowadays with those plugins mixing engineers tweak the sound as they mix. IMO it's not a natural process and a mixing engineer worth his salt should be able to work with a proper amped gtr sound without having to trash it and run to the plugin. Great music has been made that way for decades. If you ask me reamping should only be reserved for problem solving. I wouldn't work with an engineer who's first words is "i just need di tracks"...the recording process matters just as much (if more) than the mixing one and the feedback a player gets from his tone affects the performance. you can't isolate one from the other and just slap some plugin that you can easily work into your mix on top. btw there isnt a single plugin that can hold a candle to FAS's modeling. I've been using them since the LePou ones and even before that with some elementary ones and have used almost everything when it comes to amp modeling. they will do in an emergency or if you lower your standard but whenever i try one (even the great neuraldsp ones) and then go back to my axe fx i immediately notice the difference and a more 3-dimensional sound
sorry but these are non-arguments you just stumble through just to justify selling the unit for your own personal reasons. they are not reasonable arguments
Who’s arguing? I’m offering my point of view on why a unit like this has less value when you have real amps on one side and plugins on the other side. If you have nothing else they are incredible, if you gig they are incredible. But if you’re in the studio and have a bunch of other things then it’s harder and harder to justify owning one
@@ampspedalspickups if you think paying 1000-1500 bucks per amp is more justified than owning the ones fractal has in the box (not to mention all the effects and drives and stuff) then you have a different idea of what is justified or not than me...
Excellent strawman response, no one ever said that. If you watched the video I praised the fm3 and still do, use whatever makes you happy mate
@@ampspedalspickups i already do mate. didnt need your permission for that. and you did just say that you couldnt justify owning one for the price of 1000 bucks. but you can justify to yourself i assume owning a couple of amps for more than that and only having these two amp sounds...no strawman argument. just the reality you dont like to hear...but you also can use whatever makes you happy. doesnt mean it's a cohesive reasonable argument as i said in the 1st comment it's about your own personal taste which you are entitled to have of course
No matter how you dice it digital amp units aren’t real amps so yes I would rather have a bunch of analog gear around here. For digital solutions I mostly have plugins which have their advantages over a hardware unit. The whole point of why I made this video was to give the perspective that digital units used to be the best way to get these sounds but the reality is plugins have massively caught up and are close enough for digital. If you’re not gigging and have a bunch of real amps as well as a bunch of plugins the fm3 starts to sit in the middle and has the inconvenience of real time recording without the benefit of it being an analog amp. If you can’t see the logic here then I dunno what to say. It’s fine if you don’t agree but it’s the reality of the landscape of plugins and modelling units now
Amp sims are really getting there! And that comes from a guy who is AB testing Philips miniwatts vs Mullards in old or homemade tweed and plexi amps. A big part of the rock n roll sound is the interaction and feedback from a loud amp in a room though. Don’t forget that when you’re aiming for these sounds!
If you're not afraid of the amp then its not real :)
Jesus , kinda think you are all over the place.how do you have any time to play guitar when your constantly messing with stuff.too much gear not enough playing.a great guitar player can make any amp sound great
I think you missed the point of the video offering my point of view on owning a bunch of studio equipment and the fm3. No problem with sound it’s great in that regard
Great video! Will definitely try this IR. Keep up the good work, cheers from Adelaide!

3:55 I love Mikko2. Due to its pricing, I recommend everyone to buy it during Black Friday. I wrote to Mikko that it would be great if there was an update with new cabinets over time, especially with regard to the bass cabinet.
tell me if im in trouble, I just moved to the last free slot in the mix of multiout. and the 1st one renamed as a reverb
Not 100% sure what you mean but reverb is the first one yeah. If what you have is working then it’s all good!
Thank you very much
I'm having this problem with the tonex pedal and software. My interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3 gen
Tonex is a hard one because different profiles can be done at different levels. With an amp sim it’s a lot more straight forward. Have a look at my recent ToneX video and profiles and if you’re into high gain stuff download them from ToneNet and see if they are similar to what I’m getting in the video, should be some kind of starting point But really with ToneX I think it’s just a matter of driving the input level to taste
