Sedu Balo (2006) Sunun
Sedu Balo: lead jembe; Drisa Kone: second jembe; Madu Jakite: Dundun. Recorded 2006 in Bamako by RP. Sedu Balo was a master of not only Wasulun rhythms but also of related repertoire such as the Kagooro piece Sunun, from Kaarta. His feeling here is prototypical. After 3:05 min he signals the change from the quaternary to the ternary subdivision, which Drisa responds to in 3:10 min. In the following 10 seconds, the tempo increases from 140 bpm to 200 bpm; allowing for this drastic accelerando is the reason for this metric transformation. Note that the uneven timing pattern of both the quaternary (short - medium - long - medium) and the ternary (long - medium - short) subdivisions allows for a hierarchic nesting (rather than conflicting coordination) of both subdivisions. This is why you hear almost no change at all taking place in the dunun pattern. A small side-note for the experts in playing the second jembe (ka jenbeden fò): Note that in the second part o the take, Drissa starts out with what today is the standard pattern of the second jembe for Sunun, |x.x.oo| (from 3:08). However, after a couple of cycles, he switches to
a different melody, |o.x.xo| (from 3:18), which maintains some key elements of the melody in the quaternary pattern, |o.xx.bxo|.

Internationally acclaimed drummer Drisa Kone played the second jembe, and their long-time ensemble-mate Madu Jakite played the dundun. The video features the opening 30 seconds of a recording of a piece called Wolosodòn or Jòndòn, which means “serf’s dance” or “captives dance,” ...

Jembe drumming, song, and dance (2007) Tisanbe, with female satire
Переглядів 2,9 тис.7 років тому
Singer Ye Diabaté sings "tisanba," a Bamana song said to originate from the Bèlèdugu region north of Bamako. This repertoire can come along with female comedy and satire, especially when performed on the occasion of circumcision rites (where psychoactive drugs may come into play, too), but also at urban weddings as the one shown in this video. Players are Drisa Kone, Madu Jakite and Sedu Balo; ...
Jembe drumming, song, and dance (2007) madan wurukutu speed limit
Переглядів 2,7 тис.7 років тому
As so many jembe rhythms, especially those associated with the ethnic group of the Maninka (Malinké) to the south and west of Bamako in Mali and across the Guinean border, the piece "Madan" comes as a suite of two sections, a first one for the slower tempi at the beginning and a second one for the fast tempi towards the end of the piece. In order to be abale to still push further the beat tempo...

Jembe drumming, song, and dance (2007) drumming rhythm follows dance
Переглядів 1,4 тис.7 років тому
In this recording, it is interesting to note that the drum ensemble changes their rhythm (piece of repertoire) several times during the performance; they thus on the fly adapt to dancers presenting different dances: Tansole Kirin (0:40) Maraka (1:22) Tage (1:45) Maraka (2:02). Rather than complaining that these would represent inappropriate ("wrong") dances in relation to the present music, the...
