Custom Meat Hunter low mount with Alvey 651c5
Thanks to Charlie at Meat Hunter rods I have the perfect surf rod, a custom built low mount 14’, combined with the 651c5 Alvey side cast reel it’s a breeze sending 3oz and bait a 100 yards and that’s with 25lb big game line. I added the open runner myself ( note the wavy epoxy job)
If you want to order one for an Alvey make sure to request a conventional reel seat because the spinning seats do not come with plastic cushions inside the reel seat hoods which allows the Alvey to move around to much. First guide needs to be at the top of the lower half of the blank. Upper paracord fore grip above reel seat is 12” lower paracord plus rubber buttcap to bottom of reel seat is 8”

    Bushings have a better durability in salt and brackish environments vs bearings. Easier to maintain but you still gotta clean and grease em. Use a really light grease or a heavy oil.

    Like you alluded to it's about overseeing the manufacturing . Pretty much everything we own is made in China, our computers, TV's Androids and iPhones, tablets and iPads, stereo equipment. I wish there were all made at home in America but it's just not a reality anymore. But like you were saying Like, apple or Google or Zebco you oversee the components being used , the engineering and the design and then quality control. But back to Zebco's I just love their reels soo many memories and still love using them today. I'm also just facisnated with the mechanics of spincasters. AS a watch lover you can see how a watchmaker invented these types of reels. Love video's like this.

    There is a lot of reel's made in China what I've seen the last few years. The 33max is good for big fish catching 20 lbs line monofilament from factory. They took them out of my Walmart and there's 10 around me. Found them for Christmas and now there not there now. I have to go other places to find one. Or order one I hat to do.

      I hope that’s a sign that they are selling well for Zebco! Another one I would like to try is the 33 Gold MAX. It has a couple extra bearings and instant anti reverse. Unfortunately it doesn’t have the line out alarm. Hope you can find one locally.

    Nate, I am surprised that there are not more comments on your Abu7000 reel videos. I have 5 or 6 of the 7000 reels in both the Swedish version as well as the Chinese version. And then a bucket load of the Swedish 6500 reels. Anyway, the manner in which you show the movements of the reel parts like the pinion gear is excellent. Then you explain that the cross groove will allow it to engage the cross pin on the spindle gives people a working knowledge that is so helpful. If I were to make a suggestion, it would only be to lay the reel parts out on a white towel in the order in which they came off. If your an old hand at disassembling a reel it doesn’t matter but for newbies, it is very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and for expressing your opinion on the quality of the 7000 Swedish vs Chinese model. I wish they had kept that same quality in the 6500 versions.

  • @jokerswild5876
    @jokerswild5876 7 місяців тому

    If you cut that spindle down the reel,wouldn’t function the handle could not be attached 😂 the pinion support is vital to keep the shaft aligned and stop any fractional play which will push the main gear out of sync.

    Curiosity question about the reel. For context, I was fishing for Catfish a week ago. Yes, with this reel. I only got one small one, so nothing large enough to break the rod or reel. However, while fishing, and this is a brand new reel, btw....the spring inside came loose. So I couldn't cast out. So it ended my day a little prematurely because I didn't want to try and fix the issue and lose the spring out there. (I was bank fishing). I can't figure out how to keep the spring in place so it pushes down correctly. No matter what I do, it keeps popping off. So, I am wondering what can I do to make it stay in place?

    It’s a gorgeous reel..! But I wouldn’t be bait fishing with it… as the name implies,…. Chrome Rocket… it’s made for repetitive casting … you can bait fish with anything… but the ABU is like a high performance car … vrooom vrooom… I have a brand new ABU 10000 C never been used … it’s at least 50 years old and it’s beautiful…. Going to swap out the stock bearings with Abec 7 hybrid bearings ,… load it with 65lb braid and hunt Stripers at the beach….btw,… I have that same rod in 11’ version w/ Penn fathom2 The ABU goes on a St. Croix 12’ Avid Surf Caster…. I’ve been waiting a long time to put this rod and reel together because they were made 50 or so years apart … this old & new tech is coming together nicely as an old school heavy heaver… I’ve managed to put together 2 identical setups…. Time to use them soon… now that I’m ‘63…. lol 🤣 Anyways… enjoy that reel…!!! 👍😎🤙

    Sorry but your reasoning is wrong and fails to consider a long history of 7HT drive failures. The pinion support is a very sensible solution to a problem that does exist ... there are a large numbers of failures of the 7HT drive every year in the UK alone. The problem is actually two-fold. Firstly there is so little bearing surface at the bottom of the drive that under strain the inside of the drive shaft wears prematurely. The main issue however is that the boss holding the IAR bearing in the side plates are often not properly pressed into place and become loose over time, if that is not fixed then eventually the whole plate and drive self destructs. Fitting a pinion support spreads the load at the top of the drive between the bearing (or rather its housing) and the pin in the centre ... the fact that there is no inner support at the top of the drive shaft is the issue its meant to address. Fitted correctly (ensuring there is no issue with the integrity of the boss) a pinion support improves gear longevity and improves the retrieve under load. Pinion supports have actually been around since the 6HM and adding a collared sleeve is a well accepted engineering fix that has been around for hundreds of years. facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.803205716459639&type=3&locale=en_GB

    I agree that the 7000s are very good reels. I like mine better than the 6500s. I think they cast slightly further, and the lower gear ratio (4.1-1) makes for good power and torque. They are absolutely fabulous for carp and flatheads! Great video!

    I just noticed tonight that 2 of my A-Zoom snap caps have a defect that prevents the cylinder from rotating! Upon inspection, it appears that that the rubber primer pocket material exudes a bit above the level of the rim, thus making contact with the face of the inner frame, in effect “jamming” the gun. I’m looking for a way to level that area flat to permit full cylinder rotation. You have an awesome .357 Magnum revolver. I love it when I meet fellow travelers & Brothers of the Wheel 😏
