    Hold on a sec. It is cold here in the winter. Base layer cold. Hat and mittens cold. Wool socks and insulated boots cold. Proper jacket cold. You tell English-speakers it isn't cold here and 96% will NOT prepare suitably. If you will be outside longer than just walking to the car, jeans and jacket will not be enough. 11:00

    4:30 it's funny because last year it took me exactly 7 days to drive and see all those thing and a few more to boot lol. But I understand, driving 14-18 hours a day probably isn't something everyone is comfortable with.

    Let me just protest a little bit on your temperature description. -5°C along the coast is vastly different from -5°C further into the country. -5°C at the coast could be brutal. -5°C with rain and whipping wind from the sea is not a fun experience. Even with a bubble jacket, thick gloves, warm hat and scarf you'll be longing for a good, warm shower to recover your warmth

    It is quite usual here to call a hotel or other sleeping place the same day. Think on long road trips. You see that you are soon getting tired, it is getting dark outside and you long for settling for the night. Calling a couple of hours in advance? Totally cool

    I mean. If you know what you are doing, have experience hiking, is telling someone where you are going (and possibly when to expect you), etc, you'll most likely be safe. Also, phone Internet in Norway is really good. There are places where there isn't coverage, but most places have coverage

    "Hidden Gems" should be hidden for tourist at all costs. Not only in Norway but everywhere around the world. U should be rewarded if u find a "hidden gem" when u visit another country. I know one spot in Rhodos, not mentions in any tourist guide. Nature have created a mini theather in a location. I hardly thinks people on Rhodos knows about it.

    Another thing to consider when planning: Stores are closed on Sundays. Right now Norwegians are thinking "what? of course everything is closed on Sundays" but in most countries they do not close down everything on Sundays. Also Norway has a LOT of public holidays between March and May where everything is closed. There is like 10. This country loves coming up with reasons to get days off work.

    Your expensive advice is weird because in Norway, for some reasons, when prices drop even half, the standards drop by 8 times. So you go from, acceptable hotel room, to a shack with squawky floors, yeah I am not even trying to be funny thats literrally how it is. Norwegian businesses have this american thinking that people should be grateful to pay them, and this behaviour stinks, and sadly its normalised. I think I now been in court with 7 such businesses suing the piss out of them because contrary to popular belief, behaving like this is not legally lawful but no one cares so long you never complain and you cannot expect tourists to deal with this, they are just gonna run with it and never come back, ironically Norway have the worst return rate for tourists who had bad experiences because they REALLY have a bad one in fact I work in the tourist industry and regularly our company drive tourists to their living accommodations as part of our service, for a price of course. I noticed that several of the cabins you can rent for 10k a night, have gas heating and as expected, extremely poorly maintained if at all, I had one pair from the US who rented a cabin and I helped moving their baggage into the cabin for free, and noticed a rotten smell, the cabin owners were literally telling the tourists they had to pay extra for it to be fixed, the attitude stinks more than the smell. I can really see why so many young people just move out of here, understandable.

    • @XploreNorway
      @XploreNorway 20 годин тому

      I try to avoid the most expensive areas of Norway (like Flåm, Geiranger, Tromsø, Lofoten) where the tourists milking is part of the business. But your insights might really help for a video I plan about tourists scams in Norway. Unfourtenatly I don't have reports for doing that properly.

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 19 годин тому

      @@XploreNorway I only operate in the North, Finnmark so you may be right about the expensive parts, but having travelled a lot south I do notice that if you want cheap, you need to sacrifice the size of your hotel room to those tiny almost storage unit size, then you might be able to get under a thousand kr a night. The only other option for under 1500~kr a night are cabin style rentables as you say they are mostly outside the most popular areas, the only other issue then is how do you get from and to your place? A lot of these places are severely remote, inside cities you can find rooms for 800 - 1200kr a night but you have to lower your expectation a lot, a lot of these places are dirty, worn down, you know its the same standard you be paying for a 200kr room in Greece or Spain, a lot of the big hotels in central Oslo are starting to show their age too, had a room at Opera, directly adjacent to the train station and the door was warped LOL could hear everything outside, nice for 1800kr a night for that room, they even charge you if they see empty soda bottles near the fridge because they assume you took the ones inside the fridge. The sad thing is and I do not want to make us as a nation sound like we are extremely greedy, but too many small business owners expect you literally to be happy to pay for their service regardless how poor it is, its a shame because most Norwegians are good people, these poor attitudes from business owners are predominantly in smaller areas, you may have even heard about the poor reputation that car workshops here have, its for a reason people take their cars to Sweden for repairs even to this day, Sweden upped their prices for repairs but people go because they have good customer service. Soon as you get outside the big cities, the customer service basically drops, thats not me saying it either, thats the tourist companies that create these tours to Norway are complaining about lack of customer service attitude, they even run courses for tourist companies can attend for a small fee, to learn about customer service LOL The tourist companies are also overprimising on delivery, there very little stuff to do in the North except for nature, you come to see nature but they are promising you northern lights, whale tours and whatnot, but there never a warning that you may not actually be able to see the northern light this week because of bad weather, thats a form of scam again its been in the news multiple times, no need to take my word for it.

    • @XploreNorway
      @XploreNorway 13 годин тому

      I think a lot of touristic companies are not rentable. Lot of new people which see hoardes of tourist coming and want to earn money from them. When you have many it attract unserious actors. But even if they are serious and want the best for there costumers, doesn't mean they suceed. I had four videos on this channel about places which were sold or went bankrupt. An my channel is only 5 years old. And also the biggest actors have money problem, I have sources which confirmed that. So the run down rooms or appartement is the symptome of that. Don't know if you watch this video I made: ua-cam.com/video/rxMADo3N4Fs/v-deo.html There we discuss that the customers always want more. 30 years ago, they were happy with large cake buffet. Yoi can join our live stream and share your opinions if you want. It's tomorrow. Or the next one, data TBD.

    Mostly true, but the statement that the country is not that cold during winter is not correct. It HIGHLY depends on where you are, as some places gets extremely and dangerously cold during winter if you're not prepared. This applies for the inlands, the mountains and much of the high north. It can get as low as -40 or even -50 degreees celcius. -20 to -30 is pretty normal. But sure, if your holiday is in Bergen there litterally is no winter. And one more thing: please don't drive in the mountains during winter if you're not experienced. Preferably don't do it at all. There's always an extreme snowfall there, not comparable to anything seen in the lowlands.

    #1 Misconception: Corruption is much higher than I anticipated. #2 Misconception: Norwegians share the same work ethic as other Westerners. They don't, they are quite lazy. Often stuff is closed because they don't feel like working, e.g. "sorry, the cook didn't come in today". Service culture is nonexistent, e.g. SAS - especially inside Norway - is subpar compared to Ryanair. Otherwise quite a beautiful country, with good food. What baffles me is the amount of tax they tolerate.

On the other hand I have also expirienced stuff where the stuff really worked their ass off. PS: I pay way to much much taxes for my taste.

    I visited Norway a couple of years ago. Even beer at Gardermoen airport was cheaper than at Finnish airports. So, some things in Norway is expensive, others are not, but I don't know the current situation very well. Basically, the prices are North European. For example, our hotel in Ålesund (I really recommend visiting!) was as expensive or cheap as a similar one in Finland, outside the capital area. For your own and whos knows whose sake, don't publish your hidden gems! You really need places for relaxation where you don't have to run a businesses, speak foreign languages, pick up garbage and take care of people not accustomed to the weather and terrain conditions! I have visited the country once and found a place where we met only local people. It is gem, but not even hidden. It just is not an attraction. And while it is nothing super-extraordinary, I am happily not telling it to you!

    Me and my dad went on a roadtrip to Lofotr in Lofoten last summer. We are both from the eastern part of Norway so it was a long drive. And along the ride we stopped at the Polar Circle in Norway, there's a restaurant and a souvenir shop there. Don't shop there. It is insanely expensive. I think because tourists come into Norway knowing that it is expensive (which it is) they don't realize that they are being scammed by extraordinarily high prices that no sane Norwegian would ever pay. We also drove by the polar circle in Sweden, and found a very cosy restaurant with good food at affordable prices while the Norwegian equivalent was a temple to capitalism. I'm sad to say that Sweden wins this one.

      The art illustration are AI, but it took several hours to get it look right. Are you still drawing, from what I saw from your profile ?

      @@XploreNorway Aw that's a bit of a disappointment. Was hoping to follow the artist if they had a page. Yeah now that you mention it, I can see the flaws common with AI works... It is getting harder to spot that stuff... Still, yeah that was probably a lot of passes. And yup, still drawing. ^^

    I live close to it and often stays in the area around the path, many tourists arrive very unprepared, walking in low shoes when its still snow, and sometimes carry suitcases and plastic bags instead of backpacks and hiking gear.

      I'm not German. I'm not getting any money from the Norwegian state to do that channel.

    You can use a regulare VISA or Mastercard without problem in Norway. You don't need Vipps. So much false information in this video.

    More than enough food variation in Norway. Unlike Americans, Norwegians does not need 60 different brands of cereal and don't spend an entire day in the food isles
