The Lanky Logger
Приєднався 9 бер 2022
Hi! My name is Troy, and I am The Lanky Logger!
I’ve been logging Nova Scotia’s forests my entire life! I ran my own logging business for most of my career and still like to get in the woods as much as I can now! I want to keep the older equipment working, and I'm a stickler for a good, SHARP saw!
Here you'll find all things logging - including tree harvesting and processing, tools and equipment used in the woods and the woodyard, maintenance and mechanical repairs; sustainable logging practices and just about anything else it takes to keep the cycle of logging going!
If you’re new here it would mean a lot for the channel if you took a moment to subscribe, and don’t forget to check me out on other platforms as well!

Where is this guy from?
Thanks for the footage of the C6 ! Your log donkey ain't a bad sled either ! Do you ever send any pulp wood down to PHP in CB ? The guy who owns the trucking company I work for says he sees trucks from as far away as Yarmouth County, unloading pulp there.
Your welcome! PHP will take wood from our area. By the time the trucking is paid for the distance it’s about the same to send it to the pellet mill. It’s just over the hill from our wood lot. Mack when I was a full time contractor I sent everything to what was then Stora, then New Page. A lot of the wood from central NS went there then. But things have changed since NP was shut down.
Things sure have changed. My brother used to work full time in the woods back in th 90s . We're getting paid significantly less for pulp now than he was then . Another paper mill in Atlantic Canada would sure be nice. But that's likely just a pipe dream.
Great camera work! You clearly had to spend a fair bit of time getting in and out of the machine to move the camera for good shots like that! It’s been too long since I have been back through all of those woods, need to go for a walk again someday soon.
There’s wood to cut again where you and I cut back in the mid 90’s. If that’s not putting some age on us. Lol
@ 👴 it’s funny how quickly time goes by when you’re having fun!
Thank you for the video there is one of these in the UK now it reminds me of a Logset forwarder like a 4F but smaller. I thinks its a great little forwarder for its size. 👍
I love your porter! I am looking for one. Let me know if you ever want to upgrade. I am in western Quebec but I can ship it this way. I love those 3.9L Cummins. That is what my 230 Timberjack Skidder has.
Hah. She’s a good old machine. Yes the 3.9’s are a great engine.
Burr?
Why do you leave the big pine standing? I've seen this my whole life and always wondered why. Thanks
Just mostly for the fact that mills don’t pay all that much for it. And some of them aren’t worth cutting because they would be pulpwood. And we don’t have a great market for it anymore. So my plane is to cut it for a couple of my friends who have their own mills. Coming up in a video soon.
Awesome, thank you. It is a hard market for sure.
@@stevegif9620 Also at one time I used to leave them as a seed tree to seed the cutover. But I’ve learned over the years with the pine that comes back gets a weavel gets in them and they are no good after that. So I don’t want to encourage that to happen.
A real pleasure to watch this.
Great video Dan does a nice job woods looks nice after it’s cut definitely wouldn’t want to clean that mess up by hand with powersaw the blowdowns in winter is hard . Does Dan work alone or have a helper . Looking forward to seeing the harvester cut on a later video !
He does a great job! No he run all three pieces of gear by himself. 👍. Thanks
Where are you getting rid of your pulp?
Local pellet mill. Prices are very poor. But it’s going.
Got power but hard to start went back to stingily without fail
Nice old porter, i like watching your videos take care
Thank you!
Dogs are nice for several reasons and do allow for less manual input effort while aiding control and stability in the cut. They help to rock the saw slightly in the cut, taking a smaller bite as required which is easier on the saw too. Kinda like going from 4 caster cart to two casters on a cart. While moving the cart, there is better control, easier with two wheels stationary and two that swivvel.
I’m sure they have their place! Thanks
Your missing the point he is setting his saw up for the condition HE faces each and every day, not what YOU deal with.
@aussiehardwood6196 nope. I didnt miss his point..."he prefers a certain thing and style" because i replied in the same exact way, but with the opposing style. So nope. Completely understood him. And i believe he understood this as he also thanked it.
Nice ! Almost at 1k subs 👍
Yes it’s coming along nicely lately!
Hey ! Davey mentioned You, so new sub here ! Some good stuff on your channel ! Stay safe !
Yes. His channel is doing awesome. Nice to see! Thank you for subscribing!
@@thelankylogger Yes, he's a great guy and success is well deserved. I'm one step for You closer to 1k 😉
Great video! You really get the sense of what a great machine the Vimek 870.2 is to operate.
It is such a beautiful machine to run.
Don't need dogs if your saw is sharp
That is correct!
Great jobs great video!!
I am looking forward to some video of that C6 in action !
Nice looking wood hopefully you’ll get a good price for your spruce freeman’s is up to 90 a tonne from 75 a tonne early December. Hopefully tariffs don’t hurt our prices
If ya wanna get good with a file on a chain ya need to first start with a quality made file. If you try to learn to file with some junk ass file you'll be fully discouraged in the process. The file has to make the cut first, then you can learn to use it on the chain. I always file a new chain, a new chain only seems sharp to the guy that don't know how to use a file. I used to be that guy until my logging buddies showed me the way.
Great idea for heating up your oil i imagine with that big field next to your machine there’s some windchill there . I really enjoy your videos im sure the customer appreciated dry wood in middle of winter that doesn’t happen everywhere !!
It is certainly cold right now! You can never have too much dry wood.
I’d rather this time of the year than the summer. You can dress for the cold not for the heat.
Got A sharp chain you don't need dogs.
You’re talking my language. 💪🏼
Said the East Coast man.
I'm curious! The chains that performed best had lowered depth gauges. New chains are sharp. When you filed the new one, exactly how did you improve the performance, apart from the work on the depth gauges? This is from an old fella who is trying to learn more.
I guess the best way to explain this in my way is … new chains probably are sharp enough for the average guy. And for liability reason for the manufacturer of the chains they don’t want them to aggressive for the average person. Most people do file a new chain or take the rakers down. But this is different for everyone’s comfort. This depends on bar length…. Meaning depending on the ccs of your saw how much is it loading up the saw. Longer the bar the more power it robs from your saw. And also depends on what kind of wood you’re cutting in your area. Hopefully this helps.
18” bear ?
Thats what we call a new born bear cub 😂
Land of the lobster ....
🐾🐾🐻
Why do you not use dogs? I find they save my back.
I find they are more of a hiderence. I guess what I was trying to say if your saw is filed and cutting correctly you let your saw do the work. If my saw is cutting like butter the smooth dogs are more like a bumper and sliding down the log instead of bitting in the log. I hope this answers your question.
@@thelankylogger It does, to a point. And I'm not saying either of us are right or wrong...more of a discussion about the dogs themselves and if I'm using them right. When cutting rounds, I set the saw, bite in the dog and immediately start rotating away from me. I do this until the saw is almost vertical...then I reset it and start working down the rest of the back cut. I have found this to be the quickest way to work through a log...I usually am working with 2.5 foot logs. I find I can muscle the saw through with the dogs set and do more cuts with less time. I would love to hear others techniques on how they cut rounds. On average, I cut, split and stack about 10 cords a year. I need to add my cords are about 6 foot high, two feet wide and sixteen feet long.
I believe that’s one of the things I said, if your in big wood Iike 2.5 foot rounds I can definitely see that dogs are handy. We don’t have big wood here and I see the younger generation putting long bars and dogs on their saws in this area for no reason. I turns into a safety issue. I may bring this up in another video just to explain and show why. Thanks. And I like a good debate. Nice talk!
@ Agree that small wood and large bar are a very bad combo. I have the new Stihl fuel injected saw and have a 32" bar...I took it off and run a 20" for most things but have it there for bigger rounds. Saws can hit, deflect, kickback, pinch etc...at a moments notice and you need to always be ready, wearing your safety gear and using a saw that is the right length for the job at hand. Changing a bar and chain takes minutes. A 20" bar on a powerful saw cuts quickly and is still manageable IMOHO.
I've noticed a new chain don't cut as good out of the box until I sharpen it and drop the rakers.
You did a great job showing and explaining that . I also sharpen a new chain . I found that if I don’t that first filing after it gets dull is about impossible . I refuse to cut with a dull chain . A good sharp chain just puts a smile on ya face . Once again great video .
I also refuse to cut with a dull chain.
The three seventy two probably loves that little eighteen inch bar.
The rpms didn't change much at all which means it is filed really good, rakers are perfect and the flat dog is a better option for those who can file.
A lot of people like those canyon bars I know Buckin bill really brags them up true with smooth dogs for blocking wood
If you look after them especially for bucking wood they will pretty near go the life of the saw. I have done it before. Well worth the money, and the replable tips seem to last longer than the others.
Go underneath, add a piece of angle iron. Same as what its made of. 6inches overlap for reinforcement ,weld er up . Should help.quit dragging your trailer through a ditch .
I’ve only had one chain that I couldn’t do anything to make it cut. It was the brand silver streak. The dealer gave it to me to try. It wouldn’t burn through the bark.. took the rakers down, sharpened it. Nothing. But other than that, I file all my new chains and have great success. Great video! Have a blessed day
Huh. I’ve never heard of that brand of chain! Carlton chain is one that I was not a fan of back in the day. But I haven’t seen those for years in these parts. Thank you! And you have a great day aswell.
@@thelankyloggerprobably a good thing you’ve never heard of it lol. I just bought a sugihari chain. Gonna do a video on that when it gets a little warmer.
Hello!! Great video! New subscriber from Kentucky!!
Thank you! 🙏
It’s true come down to the way a chain is file . Every true logger got he or she tricks in have a sharp chain . 98% on u tube can’t sharpen a chain to make a day pay in the wood 🪵. With there little 1/2 and face cords order . I like 👍 to see them on a mtns side for a full day on a chainsaw.
Nice work demonstrating the difference as new out of the box def need some attention before they cut right
The new chain you can definitely tell rakers need to come down for sure great comparison!
I can only wish I could file
Only advise I can give to is lots of practice. But once you get it. You’ve got it for life.
When I worked on the garbage trucks in the winter a guy I worked with studded my boots with tire studs. Saved my ass a few times. I hope you are doing well this winter. Kenny.
👍. Everything is great. Thanks Kenny
So true !! Have a good weekend
The other thing, in addition to thinning your drags, you should consider filing them to a point. If you have them flat on the top you're actually reducing the attack angle of the cutter so you're not getting as much bang for your buck...
I will try that! 👍
@@thelankylogger given how well & sharp you file your chains, you will def notice a difference.
Love the spikes on bottom are those boots are they comfortable on the feet . I haven’t seen a pair like that around here in the chainsaw stores I had the rubber boot style with the studs in them hell in the porter though with steel floor
Yes. They are made by Viking. You may have to order them if they don’t have them in stock. They aren’t to bad with a pair of insoles in them. And water proof. Great for wet days too
So are you buying? Or just trying out?
Just trying it out!
is that a c5 with cummings
230 Timberjack with a Cummins
Looks like a great little machine and it looks light enough to also keep low impact on the terrain!
Are they designed to fall with?
Yes they have a harvester version as well.
Always fun playing with new toys …age doesn’t matter!!
True story! 🤣
Nice ! did you get to watch some of the harvesting in action ?
I did! They are a nice working machines.
Did you get a chance to run the harvester ? The woodlot owners association put on a demo with this gear . I was going to go but I couldn't get away from our farm that day. I think there's a real opportunity here in N.S. for this smaller gear.
No i didn’t, coming up soon though. We do really need this in N.S. So many lots coming up that need the fir taken out first then leave it. I’ve been saying for years, we need more small contractors suppling our mills then a couple bigger ones trying to do it all. I think it’s the future way of doing things. Thanks
