Kata1: What is Kata?
The first, I hope, of a series of discussions on kata in martial arts. Sorry for the length. I am assuming that you already have learned and practiced kata with knowledgeable instructors. In this video (and the series) I thought I would try to go beyond the basics and go a little deeper into kata and kata practice.

Thank you for taking the trouble to share your knowledge of the deeper meanings. Really very interesting.

Been doing bjj for over a year and started doing Judo recently and finally found this gem of a channel. I really liked watching Mifune's Judo and hoped to learn the mechanics of all the moves. My gym is sports competition based and I tend to ask alot of detail questions about the techniques that my teachers would often say "don't think too much about it" which makes me sad a bit because part of me expected everything to already have been figured out already, judo being an older art. I noticed in the old Mifune vids they don't really try to break each others' grips and me being weak and small, hopes to replicate the old ways.
O aschi Barei
It Is not uki goshi...
The weight being on the right leg is a gem.

Respected Sir, Amazing explanation. Regards Jay
This is hane goshi, not the nage no kata uchi mata.
It is uchi mata. Hane Goshi has a different amplitude and uke lands completely indront of uke doing almost 180 degrees in a straight line during the throw phase.
You clearly don't know the difference between hane goshi and uchi mata, people like ya'll love to call out uchi mata, it ain't that hard it just looks like hane goshi but they are 2 completely different throws, you just don't know yo shi.
Old school hane-goshi! This is what I wanted to know!!
This is the first time I've seen such a cool technique.
Great summary. The conneciton to O Goshi is very interesting and highlights the projection principle involved in the throw.
Sumi Otoshi will always look like magic to me. I am always surprised when I see it executed with such ease. Very cool video, and explanation. Hope all is well! Cheers
How didn't I come across your material before? Absolutely clear explanation and execution. I hope you can upload more techniques 😊
This is awesome. I felt that impact.
Oh my goodness, where was this channel when I was training Judo back in the day? This is amazing. I have been watching Steve Scott and Shintaro Higashi for a lot of technique breakdowns, but this is such a classical breakdown of techniques, as well as further explanation in the comments to clarify things. Truly, this is a phenomenal channel and a huge resource to the Judo community. The guys at my BJJ class are going to hate (love) this. Cheers
Excellent. Thank you.
Beautiful! I've been struggling trying to use this technique a lot, but the detail of bringing the foot behind the other on the same rail will help a tonne!
Where is the full video. I almost wept hearing "tande", my father was a judo instructor and i was heard growing up tandend no one knew wjyat it was or could define it. My old man was right😢.
hips (pelvis) means the lower back
my hips has to be lower than his hips?
what is the fulcrum in this throw? the hip?
Steve, I came across your video and was amazed! As your student, nearly 50 years ago, you look exactly the same! I cannot imagine just how good you are today, as i thought you were fantastic then! Always the teacher, your content is superb. It was an honor to learn from you! Joe Meyer
Yes, my dad said that was real Judo. It's when you say wow, what was that. That was fantastic! Keep practicing. It will be there someday.
The term "plantar area" doesn't really speak to me. I think the plantar area is pretty much the entire sole of the foot. I was trying to suggest that you do not want to use the edge of the foot or the heel. You use the forefoot part of the bottom of the foot. This would include the area behind the toes, the ball of the foot, and might extend across toward to the little toe (but certainly not all the way to the little toe). You use a slight cupping and lifting pressure. In Sasae, ideally you have uke drawn forward onto his/her toes or ball of the foot. So when you apply a little pressure on the ankle, cupping toward your little toe, you are able to break the ball and toes of uke's foot free from the mat. Over they go.
🙏
I remember the talking about the different colored gi for TV. The first trial was with a red gi. You know Judo red and white colors. But they found out that the red faded to a pink color. No man wanted to compete in a pink gi. Hahaha lol We all had an unbleached gi to practice in. The longer you were in Judo, the whiter your gi got. If you had to go up against someone with a very white gi, you knew you were in for it. Thanks for the memories!!!
I'm glad you had some fun with it. It is all fun, after all.

Mr. Cunningham. Your presence is missed. Do you have any plans of returning to UA-cam in the future?
Superb demonstration and explanation, as always. Many thanks for uploading these videos!
Do you know of any contemporary sources reporting about these matches? I am aware of a description of a match by Tomita between Saigo and an opponent from a different school in 1885, but Tomita wrote that down several decades after the events. Is there any available source from the time between 1882 and 1889?
Steve, I appreciate you contributions to judo. I have your vhs tape for the dai ikkyo and still refer to it today.
I've been working on hane-makikimo for a few weeks now; I can't tell you how relieved I am to find this! Thank you, Steve!
6:00 and 6:42 super vital tip. so thats why in ju no kata when performing o-goshi uke move a little bit before recieve the throw. now i see pulling against your back is the key to execute this without having uke avoiding/sliping away from the technique. thanks🫡. amen.
Another masterful demonstration - domo arigato gozaimasu 🙇
Can you upload the rest of Dai Sankyo? Your contents are awesome
"uki" is just the same as Happo no Kuzushi or they are different?
oss! sensei! rei! the glory is to God! amen!.
its normal to feel torsion in my spine? like when you apply torque to a towel twisting it for dry. is this twisting of the spine any dangerous against a very resisting oponnent?
No. If you are feeling pressure on your spine or feeling any pain, you're doing it wrong. This is how back injurues happen. There is a tendency to focus on the hip and waist, and not as much on the hand placement, pull, positioning, and off-balance. The hip is the final piece. You shouldn't feel like you are wrestling your opponent over.
@@stevecunningham8201I am really struggling with the "tilt to the side" part of the technique. you tilt to the side and forward or is just to the side? its really awkward position for me and feel like i could get injured if try to overcome. i am very tall.
