I remember the talking about the different colored gi for TV. The first trial was with a red gi. You know Judo red and white colors. But they found out that the red faded to a pink color. No man wanted to compete in a pink gi. Hahaha lol We all had an unbleached gi to practice in. The longer you were in Judo, the whiter your gi got. If you had to go up against someone with a very white gi, you knew you were in for it. Thanks for the memories!!!
The part you said about your sensei's judogi smelling like incence and how that smell ever since majes you reminisce was very moving. Thank you for sharing this.
Hi Steve, this is Rummel Wagner I trained with you and St. Petersburg back in the early 70s. The first time I ever went to a Chinese restaurant was with you when we celebrated and honored the death of your master ⛩
Umm....the original uwagi as we know it today was created by the Nippon Butokukai (now defunct) along with kendo uwagi back in the 1920's. Anything before that was just a cotton longcoat that came in multiple sizes and not official. I have books from the diet showing the variations in pictures with the Butokukai version.
You might note that Kano was a member of the Butokukai. He and Totsuka were members and led the jujutsu group. I was told that they brought the uniform that Kano developed to the Butokukai, who adopted it. That is why I mentioned the Butokukai in the video. This was, at least, the way it was explained to me.

I'm glad you had some fun with it. It is all fun, after all.
Dear Mr. Cunningham: your videos are so interesting and informative. I like watching them very much and hope you keep making more.

Thanks, it was a little bit hard to say. I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone before, but I don’t think it is anything I need to be ashamed of.

Wow. Small world. Good to hear from you.
Thanks, Steve.

Are you still teaching? And, if so, where?
Great info!!!!
