The Battle of Waternish
"There were several battles in Skye between the MacLeods and the MacDonalds, and they are not clearly separated. One was the notorious ‘Battle of the Spoilt Dyke’ near Trumpan where a party of marauders were caught when their boats were stranded by the tide; another took place in the region north of the Cuillin Hills, near Corrie na Creiche. Waternish House is several miles south of Trumpan, so there may have been another conflict referred to by the pibroch". (Ronald Smith)

Black Donald's March
Переглядів 803Рік тому
There's maybe about four different ways of playing this tune. They are all very nice, and I have chosen here to play the cadence notes in the ground and doubling more or less even but with a little taken off the low A as the second cadence note. In the first variation, I have made the first note short and the low A's long. I wouldn't advise doing that if playing in this year's Gold Medals - jus...

The End of the Little Bridge
Переглядів 9574 роки тому
A very old tune, it is one of a set of tunes which require that musical interest to be created by rhythm, pace and timing, for, in truth, it has little melodic content. It is the gathering tune of the Camerons, as well as the Sutherlands, and is sometimes seen as a variant of Clanranald's Salute.
The Phantom Piper of Corrieyairack - John MacLellan (1969) - First Prize Saltire Composing Award.

(Notes by Col David Murray) We were about 80 strong, the column headed by our pipers, Iain MacFadyen with the 1957 Northern Meeting Gold Medal under his belt, Ian Fraser a pupil of Rothiemurchus’s from Carrbridge, nicknamed ‘Sheriff,’ of course, and Jock Smart, a former boy soldier; good players all. Wherever possible we marched across country, but not even the deepest heather could defeat our ...
"Nameless" - Hi Hio Tro Tro
Переглядів 7834 роки тому
This tune is based on the setting from the Campbell Canntaireachd but in truth the alterations made to it when published in the Piobaireachd Society's Collection are not improvements - many of the original movements have been changed and edited. I still play the PS edited version because I learned it a long time ago with it being a set tune for the Clasp, and it is still a wonderful piece of mu...
The Red Speckled Bull
Переглядів 9674 роки тому
This tune was supposedly composed by Ranald MacAilean Og along with The Finger Lock and The Vaunting, sometime between 1682 and 1741. Some tales tell that Ranald tackled this fearsome animal in the River Skailheal, tearing off its horns. He presented the horns to MacDonald of Keppoch, who asked that the tune be given for him, which was granted. Another version was that the composer was at the B...
The Salute to the Great Pipe
Переглядів 5934 роки тому
This tune was composed by my father, Captain John A MacLellan, in 1984, and it was awarded First Prize in the John MacFadyen Memorial Trust composing competition held in the same year. The illustration is of an album which I made in 1986, which is now a very long 34 years ago, of which the title was "The Salute to the Great Pipe" and on which the tune is also recorded.
The Battle of the Pass of Crieff
Переглядів 5594 роки тому
This is a big, bold, bottom hand tune and a standard in the repertoire. The battle seems to have been a skirmish between excisemen supported by the redcoats, and a gang of freebooters, around 1730. There does not seem however even to be much evidence of a "Pass" of Crieff. More likely it is a rowing tune, composed when one of the Coll Rankins played for Dr Johnson on the Johnson/Boswell tour of...
Fair Honey

Not a lot is known about this pleasant tune. It is in Angus MacKay's and Duncan Campbell's Manuscripts. Thomason notes it as "A Mhil Braonnach", the dripping of honey from the honeycomb.
The Lament Mary MacLeod (Cumha Mairi Nighean Alasdair Ruadh)
Переглядів 1,9 тис.4 роки тому
The great lament composed for the Harris bard and poetess Mary MacLeod by Patrick Og MacCrimmon. She was born at Rowdel, Harris, in 1567 and died aged 105 years in Dunvegan in 1674. Mary Macleod is widely regarded as one of the main writers of the new school of poetry that was emerging in the 17th century, which eventually replaced the classical Gaelic bards. Curiously, she was buried face down...
The Little Spree
Переглядів 2,8 тис.4 роки тому
One of a trio of "Sprees" in the repertoire, the others being the Big, and the Middling. The tune appears in Angus Mackay, incomplete without toarluath and crunluath variations, in Donald MacDonald's Manuscript, and in John MacKay's. It has variously been named "The Big Drunkard, and "You are Drunk, You Have Drunk a Quart, An Daorach Bheag". The illustration is of "The Penny Wedding" by Sir Dav...
The Bicker

A drinking vessel; "the Bicker was more bucket - shaped and came in two forms, the luggie with an upright handle, and the coggie which had downward curved handles which might have been two or three in number". (From The History and Structure of Ceol Mor, Professor Alex Haddow, 1982) The tune is also recorded in the Campbell Canntairteachd as "Robert Sinclair's Wife's Lament".

Very nice. I haven't heard that timing on variation 1, but it's a good alternative. I was taught years ago to play a doubling on variation 1. What would be your thoughts on this if it were presented to you in competition?

    • @colinmaclellan7123
      @colinmaclellan7123 Рік тому

Perfectly fine to play the optional doubling to the first variation. I left it out this time because I had just had a conversation with Roddy Livingstone who was a main pupil of James Campbell Kilberry, who said that James did not favour putting it in. Next time I might change my mind - although with many of the variations very similar in melody and structure I think leaving it out might slightly favour the tune. All a matter of musical taste and opinion.
