You had some good points here, like how the wars were generally caused by Nephite dissenters and how Mormon seems to have a bit of a man crush on Captain Moroni, but your views were largely interpreting Captain Moroni’s actions through a filter of modern American politics - with a libertarian spin. For example, the war against Amalickiah wasn’t just “a war they disagreed with.” We are talking about an invasion of nephite lands not the US attacking Iraq in 2003. The Kingmen were not just a different political party, they were people who were advocating the overthrow of the government and then siding with an invading army. And when you are dealing with a large, hostile, armed group you don’t go with 2 police officers and ask them all to come quietly. You go with an army and demand their surrender. Moroni probably didn’t just throw everyone in jail (which he was obviously willing to do) because the Kingmen resisted arrest, so to speak. Finally, in life or death situations binaries are not just justified, they are often the most appropriate reaction. For example, if someone breaks into my house in the middle of the night, and I meet them in my entryway with a gun, I am going to present them with a binary. Either they turn around and leave my house immediately, or I am going to shoot them. I would be completely justified in this my-way-or-the-highway approach. It is not a negotiation. In the same way, Moroni was completely justified in presenting Zarahemnah with the binary of agree to not fight again or we will fight to the end. This kind of demand was seeking to prevent future wars, not an indication of blood lust or authoritarianism.

I’ve said exactly this about the Proclamation being divine prophesy. It was a beautiful document, but at the time it was indeed not controversial or bothersome to anyone, no matter how liberal. If that document was released by the church today they’d be vehemently attacked! It’s a beautiful thing that it was released when it was, at a time that people at the time did not comprehend a reason to make such common sense (at the time) declarations!

connor see: The Idol of Our Age How the Religion of Humanity Subverts Christianity Daniel J. Mahoney, specifically the Foreword By Pierre Manent...Great synopsis of the bind Christianity and academia have placed themselves. This includes the restored gospel being subverted to adopt a generalized humanistic side in order to level with uncivilized nations. The world is not really Safe and Effective and unequal to Virtue and Charity as taught by Jesus Christ leading to personal repentance, which is really what this is about. I really enjoy your format and musings, be careful of presentism and projection. Also don't lose sight of how this goes down in the USA when we are encircled about north, south, east and west...

This whole thing was so uncomfortable from the beginning to the end. It was so bad that I felt indelibly compelled to skip scripture study this morning and bear testimony to my children of the divinity of the Book of Mormon, the supernatural and superior process it underwent, that Mormon was guided by the Spirit of the Lord as to every story to include (out of very many available to him), every person to tell about, and every single word and sentiment. And that there is no philosophy or political ideology, or any science that is any more true than that book, and they needed to know the scriptures, read them again and again and to not let the philosophies of the world cloud out the spiritual manifestation that they're true and that the Book of Mormon is true in exactness! It's very unsettling that this has been so assessed in such a way as critiquing a classic novel like Lord of the Flies by an active church member who has actually done much good. 😢

Furthermore, as an addendum to my previous post, after the wars Moroni fought against Zerahemnah, Amaleckiah, Ammoron, and all the king-men, thousands of people seceded from Zarahemla. Hagoth built a big boat and shuttled them north. Even Ammon and the Anti-Nephi-Lehies departed out of the land. Captain Moroni had no problem with people seceding. He did have a major problem with coups, hostile takeovers, and treason. Zerahemnah was in the wrong. Amaleckiah was in the wrong, Ammoron was in the wrong, and the king-men who supported them were in the wrong. They were not interested in seceding. They wanted to overthrow the system of judges and place themselves in charge or else destroy the Nephites. There are more factors at play in these wars and the aftermath than is described in the video.

I finally finished this and have included additional thought to what I already added; as always, I appreciate your balanced views. It is possible Mormon had a bias and as a war general himself, saw Moroni through that lens of a general. I also appreciate your constant appeal for ending conflict without violence if possible. It still begs the question of where we are today in our quest for liberty and to stop the demise of our country and values. We also have to consider the many times Nephi felt the spirit stop him from writing more. Are the scriptures of God or opinions of men-or can they be both. Mormon, being an imperfect man, basically summarized the BOM with his bias and I’m sure did his best to follow the spirit. But he was still a man. It puts a whole new level of personal responsibility to follow the spirit when even reading scriptures.

the essence of the “BoM “”””prophetic and for OUR DAY history comp and prep Lesson”””” is primarily in the consistency of the same messages repetitions over and over - not so much about prophets and every day people demonstrating their good and bad, but that as well of course, - we know Nephi wasn’t perfect or captain Moroni can’t possibly convince me either they never (Nephi especially) had the idea on their sometimes frustrated hearts and minds to take their weapons and kill those wicked brothers of his. If anyone reading studying the BoM front to back can’t get the message about the HELL in HELLO that there is a reason of the land promise sacredness, title of liberty, liberty to choose Christ and if you do you prosper because the sacred prosperity is covenant based attached to it as is the cutting off part to the covenant breaking, then that person has in my opinion missed one huge sacred and powerful important part of the messages that we ought to draw from it. History repeats itself by the very nature of humanity’s sins and covenant obedience. The Book of Mormon isn’t telling us to do a Teancum event in the heat of the moment, or a 4000 slaughter or a Laban headache, It’s telling us, what’s to come and why, and we ought to be covenant people, not necessarily excluding the taking up of arms in defense of our liberty…. title of liberty blah blah, but nobody wants to talk about it- so you they apologize and soft-talk it into metaphorical bahoolupsy.

And to pull in the dismissed case of his daughter & son-in-law which provided no evidences against them by legal investigators is wrong on your side. Why would you falsely accuse or assume them guilty when the investigation provided them to be innocent of the horrible accusations? You are making subtle accusations which have no standing against a man who has done amazing advances in medical procedures; a loving father, husband, and grandfather; a exemplary man giving enriching, hopeful, inspiring impact on those who hear him, and a selfless devoted Man of God. Then you excuse yourself of any solid standing as to why you share such a diluted post.

Connor, you and most LDS readers, I think, are way too lenient on Pahoran--and way too tough on Moroni's letter to him. The King-men had already tried twice to overthrow the government and Moroni's response was the same then as now; and yet, Pahoran, while his armies and people are being decimated, says he was still "somewhat worried concerning what we should do." Here's a mild suggestion, Pahoran: DO SOMETHING! He doesn't even keep his generals apprised of the rebellion (though his response letter to Moroni gets there next day Fed-ex). Moroni was amazingly generous to Pahoran after finding out Pahoran was not a full-fledged traitor. Not a traitor, but certainly not the faithful and dependable defender of liberty as was needed, either. And Pahoran's wartime passivity and negligence likely cost troop lives.

I think that serves as an unspoken preface to every comment we ever make on any subject. (Kind of a rhetorical variation of the military adage: You comment with the knowledge you have, rather than the knowledge you wish you had.) Based on such availability, it seems fair to propose that LDS readers may often excuse Pahoran too readily and criticize Moroni too harshly. Moroni could fairly have noted Pahoran's costly passivity, but instead went WAY out of his way to praise Pahoran --perhaps in a deliberate, strategic effort to get Pahoran back on track as a more useful ally in this dire moment.

Was he insinuating that Moroni was angelically perfect or was he suggesting Moroni was willing to fight for the tough issues in all his innately masculine responsibilities as a man and defender of truth? I’m going to submit that the lack of masculinity today has created our weak society where kindness is the strongest virtue to live by and therefore has put our families and society at large at risk. Emasculating men has been painful to watch. I state that kindness without defending truth-that leads to liberty becomes cowardice, which leads to slavery.

Not all truth is equal. Higher truth: Follow God's prophet. What is the current council regarding what missionaries should bring? Follow that. :) I'm sure there are differences in managing a church and missionaries during the time of Jesus and the modern world. Could some missionaries benefit from the "old" way? With the Spirit, I'm sure they would. However, there are so many "more important" things we are counseled to focus on today. On a side note, a consecrated person will learn the same lessons and experience the same joy regardless of whether or not they have luggage or money. :)

*"If there are faults they are the mistakes of men;* wherefore, condemn not the things of God, that ye may be found spotless at the judgment-seat of Christ." I don't think that Moroni (Mormon's son) would have written that on the final plate if there weren't imperfections in both the writing and the people being written about. He was basically saying, "We're real, 3D, imperfect people just like you! But don't let that distract you from the things of God that are written in this book." I believe that finding that 3rd dimension, and being able to see the humanity of these people, rather than just relying on simplistic, 2D caricatures of them, is an essential part of not treating the Book of Mormon lightly, and coming out from under the Lord's condemnation.

The kingmen were treasonous. We don’t have all the facts there is so much more history written that Mormon read that we don’t have. We have a condensed version of their history. Moroni knew if the kingmen ruled it would be the demise of the Nephite nation. I don’t care what anyone says the Book of Mormon reflects our day and it’s like our political differences today in our country. The free men and kingmen. I don’t need to say who’s who. It’s obvious. Moroni is engulfed in war and has had it with the wimpy deserters and losing so many good men in war. He was fed up. Connor your assessment is way off. Might recheck your testimony of the Book of Mormon.

In the last days, there will not be a middle ground. In Matthew, we read, "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters." There is in the Book of Mormon the killing of those who don't join with an army, they are executed. This dictatorship was the form of Roman reaction in desperate times, with Cincinnatus as a good example. Thanks for your continued good work.

Without knowing how due process plays out in Nephite law, we are talking about a group of traitors, not conscientious objectors. Every time the dissenters went over to the Lamanites, that was another war that lead to the death of thousands. The Anti-Nephi-Lehi’s covenant with God was well known and they provided support to the Nephites’ defense even if not openly fighting for the Nephites.

From the pre-existence until now -- it has always been a BINARY solution set -- you are with Heavenly Father or you are in rebellion. High or low -- no matter what 'keys' you hold you must stand with God or answer to the consequences. I understand you are a born-in-the-church member and have no metric for conversion-to-the-faith or manhood. You have to learn this and when you are a convert and embrace your manhood, then you will understand Capt Moroni. Your lack of self-awareness and tone-deafness is quite astounding and unworthy of you. Moroni (as described below) is head and shoulder above us all -- for now... we will soon have a chance to stand upon his shoulders and reach farther and do more --- we must learn from his lessons not criticize them. The reason why Capt Moroni was called there to this task is because , unlike you, he did not say: Maybe, might, i don't know, perhaps, what if, i suppose, i guess... etc ad nauseam. God spoke and he acted. He had faith and was a man. ALMA 48: 11 And Moroni was a strong and a mighty man; he was a man of a perfect understanding; yea, a man that did not delight in bloodshed; a man whose soul did joy in the liberty and the freedom of his country, and his brethren from bondage and slavery; 12 Yea, a man whose heart did swell with thanksgiving to his God, for the many privileges and blessings which he bestowed upon his people; a man who did labor exceedingly for the welfare and safety of his people. 13 Yea, and he was a man who was firm in the faith of Christ, and he had sworn with an oath to defend his people, his rights, and his country, and his religion, even to the loss of his blood. ... 17 Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men. 18 Behold, he was a man like unto Ammon, the son of Mosiah, yea, and even the other sons of Mosiah, yea, and also Alma and his sons, for they were all men of God. PS -- comparing the American Empire to a theocracy directed towards Zion is a Major Rhetorical Flaw.

I see Moroni as a very good type of Christ. He’s merciful and follows God’s law of war as found in DC 98, that was also given to Nephi and others like Abraham. He was merciful to the maximum until it came to those in open rebellion to truth- like the Kingmen who were traitors and those Lamenites like Ammoron and Zarahemnah who cared nothing for human life. These he was like a second coming type of Christ, with the wrath of God. He used the power given him of the people/ judges for Military Tribunal to carry out swift justice. He gave people multiple chances to repent, in which case he was fully merciful as part of his judgements, and there were multiple example of him demonstrating this Christlike difference from modern “military dictators”.

Connor, it appears you are sliding down a very slippery slope ever since i heard you refer to the book "Rough Stone Rolling" by Richard Bushman and said something to the effect that after reading that book and saw the faults of Joseph Smith that the Lord could certainly work with you too. That book has been totally debunked as lies. Since then you have discredited the founding leaders and the miracles that occured during the early church and destroyed our heros. You seem to be very much in line with the Arrington false historians and revisionist history. By discrediting our history and leaders and now even the prophet Mormon and the founding document the book he abridged, you discredit and devalue what they did which leads to apostasy. I appreciate your Tuttle Twins books and some of your accomplishments in the past but i can no longer support you and Libertase. Please contact The Joseph Smith Foundation and their research and rediscover the truth before it's too late for many.

If there were 15 Democratic dissenting Nephite wars before Christ came, I wonder how many American wars have been instigated to "subject peace and civilization?"

You also need to consider the distillation process of the book of Mormon. We only have a fraction of their history. Mormon was not only allowed, but inspired to include what he did. That includes his description of captain Moroni. Then it passed through the translation process with Joseph Smith, and it yet remained. Captain Moroni wasn't perfect, of course, but he was everything Mormon said he was.
