study knits podcast 1 | semper slipover, berlin scarves, WIPs, and my struggle to read patterns
Congrats on getting that done in a day!!! I just went to my ravelry to see how long it took me to knit my aran gallant - 10 days, lol. But that was with me working full time and just working in it a little in the evenings. Plus I made mine longer than the pattern length. I held 3 strands together so had to keep watching that I was using all three- kind of a pain. I wore mine a couple of days ago and got a lot of compliments on it. I really like evermore, probably my favorite album of hers, but I’m a newer TS listener
The sweater looks super cute! 😍 is it comfortable around the shoulders? I've been debating whether I should knit this, because the shoulder section looks kind of snug. Happy knitting ❤
Girl, props to you for your attention span MADE OF STEEL! I would have probably given up around noon lol. This turned out so so cute, this color is everything and it suits you so well!
Great job on your sweater!
Aaah I love this vlog, so cozy to watch. Also, my favorite Taylor Swift album is… drum roll… Evermore 😅😅 It might be because it was my very first Taylor Swift album that I’ve properly listed to as an album. I personally love every song and I don’t skip any 😅
Loving this!!
Girl you did that! holy shit! Go you! It looks great on you.
ivy is such an underrated song!
I cannooot figure out how to add short row shaping to the back. I can do short rows, but how do I know where to turn? (I want to skip to the end to see if you made it but I'm staying strong)
This was my first time DIY-ing short rows and adding them myself! I just picked two arbitrary places to turn that i thought would look the best i just made sure the turns were at the same place on the left and right. I also read through raglan patterns with short rows in my library and used them as a guideline!
Gotta love the song❤ great sweater too
Your sweater looks amazing! 👏🏾 Love the color. 💛
Thanks for the mention 🥰 I’m halfway through and rooting for this sweater !!!
100% agree on the wording for repeats. idk why it throws me off every time. I just need the bottom line - give me the total!
I want your tee shirt! So cute!
Ooo first view!
seeing your failed sock made me so sad :(( when you're ready to give socks another try, I really reccomend Summer Lee's Basic Bitch Sock pattern, It's so beginner friendly (it was my first sock pattern!) AND free AND comes with youtube tutorials - I really recommend it!
I bought Willow and Champagne Problems as well but both in DK! Hoping to keep and make next fall for a Stripe Hype
omg i love this for us!
Yarn is so freakin expensive, glad that this can be helpful to your purchases!!! Love your videos. I think I remember you mentioning you are catching up on RHOSLC.....you are in for a treat haha the recent season is ridiculous in the best way. Sending love from one knitter to another! Love your Irene Lin pullover vest, it is on my TBKnit list
Hi Ally! Your FOs look fantastic. I would highly recommend Summer Lee's basic sock pattern. It is included with the colorwork cuff club bundle, so if you're interested in adding colorwork charts to it, it would be a good purchase! I knit 15 socks in October alone and 9 of them were Summer Lee designs. Summer Lee is also such a lovely person, it makes buying her patterns feel a little nicer :)
I started the first 12 rows of the Lana Vest a couple of weeks ago and then sort of didn't know if I wanted to keep going... but your endorsement has made me fall in love with this design all over again! Mine is in Baa Ram Ewe Winterburn DK in a taupe colour so I was questioning my choice. I LOVE the design in cream but I think I'll love it in taupe too. Just another neutral to throw over everything! Thanks for the inspiration! And the Jared Flood sweater is GORGEOUS!
yes keep working on the lana lol - I feel like the beginning was the hardest when i couldnt see the vision 🤣
Great job on your boyfriend's Rift Sweater! Excellent work. And the cables on your Lana Vest are stunning! 👏🏾🧶
My favorite go-to sock patterns are the Ol' Reliable Top Down and Trusty Toe-Up from Tanis Fiber Arts. They are such well-written (free!!) basic patterns, and I often use them as a base if I want to do a ribbed sock or some other texture.
the willow colorway is gorgous!
Rift sweater question! I loved watching your journey with it and I want to make one for my dad. He’s a large man so I was surprised his chest circumference is 48” so I’ll make the 51.25” size. I’m surprised his measurements don’t put him at the largest size. Does the pattern recommend positive ease or is it based on true measurement? I’m also worried it may fit his chest but not midsection. Any insight is appreciated!
It's supposed to be like 3-5" positive ease - the first time i made this for my bf i made the size he measured for and it was too small - the ease range is so narrow that it doesn't leave much room for error :/
I thought I was the only one who put yarn on their desk for emotional support 😂
Congratulations on the men’s sweater! It’s gorgeous! Your tenacity! 🔥🔥🔥
Great people for sock knitting you tube are crazy sock lady and earthtones girl. I personally like top down socks the best. Best of luck with your interviews and The Match.
So happy for you about being monetized! And seriously I bet it’s such a amazing feeling to get to buy yarn from doing something/sharing about something you enjoy!
Tin can knits rye socks 🧦 but also I find it interesting that toe-up socks confuse people. They’re so much easier for me bc I measure my foot toe to ankle bone, that’s the foot length and work the heal from there (or a little shorter for superwash yarn growth). Maybe you should get the big book of sock knitting patterns bc it’s goes in depth about sock anatomy.
This was my first sock pattern and it's well written. I've gone back to it for 3 other pairs.
My go to pattern is the 402 sock- I prefer going cuff down with a heel flap and gusset over a heel with short rows. It took me forever to figure out socks!! You got this! Also, love love love the lana vest! Makes me want to tackle a cabled vest or sweater
Hey, I get what you mean by that the sock pattern is confusing. As a German knitter I might be able to give some explanation. In Germany we have a lot of like big yarn brands that are well known for their sock yarn (Schachenmayr, Regia, Lana Grossa) and they often provide with the yarn sock knitting instructions for free (either online or as little booklet). But the instructions aren’t like a written pattern but just a table for all sizes. You have different tables for the yarn weights (fingering, sport, dk). But in the tables there is just the shoe size listed with the amount of stitches you need to cast on, the length for the foot and the decrease rate. It’s very bare and minimalistic. But that’s how a lot of people here learn how to knit socks. So I guess Susanne Müller combined this very old school way of sock patterns with a modern way of describing every step and just assumed people would rely on the table. Doesn’t make it less confusing but it explains the way the pattern is written.
thank you for the insight!!!
Ohhh, I love when everyone is sick at the same time 😂 glad to see you upload again!
okay now that I've watched your whole vlog I'll give you more details on my Lana: I'm using Drops Nepal (65 wool, 35 alpaca) in color 0100. I bought it from wool warehouse and it was super affordable! This was also my first all over cable work project (and only my third wearable) and I loved how unnecessarily detailed it was because I don't really enjoy charts at all haha. I have made two mistakes (so far...), I did one of my larger cables the wrong direction (and of course its on the front and like 50 rounds back...I'm going to attempt to duplicate stitch it later on to fix it), and in the textured portion on the outer arm portion I somehow got out of pattern and have this random row of stockinette haha. But otherwise I'm loving it and just going for it. I live in socal so I'm hoping its pretty wearable. I've struggled finding things I could make that are practical to wear here. Thats all, love your vest!!
omggggg I’m on row 30 something of the Lana vest this is perfect! 🥰
omg love this!
Excellent job on your vest! Love the stitch definition. 🧶
Fantastic! I loved seeing your that you made this vlog. Congratulations!
Waiiiit! i'm knitting the body of my Lana vest now. I love that I found this!

Omg I LOVE only murders!! Thank you for this video, I'd totally be keen to see your take on the other seasons. I liked how Mabel's knitwear style changed from her "youth" to the present, just like when I was in University the "Gossip Girl" style was in with the preppy stockings and headbands - something I would never wear today! With regard to the ribbed yoke sweater, I thought the Biskrem from Nash Knits was close! Xx
There's a sweater pattern called Sea Glass Sweater that can use any number of colors, I think it's worth a try
I am knitting the Mabel Sweater, a fun knit with a great textured fabric. Joji's name? The Js are pronounced like Hs (as in HoHee). A nice round up of patterns.
I really enjoy your vlogs!! I've been lowkey knitting along this long weekend, its kinda like a parasocial knitting pal hahaha
omg i love that!!
Hi! Im excited I just found your channel!! I definitely subbed :) but may I ask since you love wool of the Andes yarn I was wondering if it was itchy at all?I’m looking for new yarn brands to try, and that one was on my list
I don't find it that itchy! It also softens a ton with time :)
@@studyknits thank you!
I LOVE my 9” circular US1 and US2 needles for sock knitting! Almost exclusively what I use except like you said DPNs are better for colorwork
Loved this video. There is a beautiful knit from Mabel in one of the episodes where it is oversized and kind of a v neck with a collar, but the yarn is color changing and perhaps a bit self striping in red, yellow and maybe a bit of green I am not sure. But it is stunning. I think it is season 2 or beginning season 3.
oooo! Lana vest is on my list to knit but I've never done cables and I'm a little intimidated
So sweet of you to mention me, even though it wasn't me, haha! All of your gift knits are making me feel guilty, especially that scarf, WOW they are so lucky to receive that from you!
still love your channel! Also i love gift knitting but its def not for everyone haha i love knitting for myself more
