2014 Sequoia Sunroof Housing Assembly Removal (and the fix for my issue)
My sunroof got stuck open in the tilt position & would not open/tilt any more, and it was making a very loud clicking noise. So I decided to tackle the job myself rather than paying $1K+ for a shop/dealership to do it. I had already removed the headliner in preparation for this job, so this video picks it up from there.
I could see that a cable on the driver's side was sticking out once I got the headliner down, and I was able to grab the cable and push it back toward the rear, which in turn made the sunroof tilt back down and level with my roof. But I needed to get this fixed since we use the sunroof a lot.

2nd Gen Sequoia Switch Plate Mod

I needed an option to add more switches to my 2014 Platinum model that already had all existing switch holes occupied. Fit and finish are nice, and it's a breeze to install. It also has an option to wire it up as a running light, but I did not do that. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DQ33YZS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1
Headliner Leak 2nd Gen Sequoia - Sunroof Drain Locations
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
My '14 Platinum started having a leak from the driver's side headliner near the "B" pillar area after heavy rains, so I decided to tackle the job of finding it. Most people say that the leak is from a clogged sunroof drain, but mine turned out to be a very odd source. This video will help you troubleshoot this problem and show you how to take the headliner down partially.

For 2nd Gen. Sequoia Platinum owners, the lack of USB power ports in the second and third rows can create a mess of wires trying to run them from the front or rear 12V outlets. I decided to add them in the 2nd row center console so they'd be discreet & also prevent tripping over wires. Daughter is having this issue with her recent 2015 Sequoia purchase. Great video!! No, Excellent video!!!
Appreciate it. Hopefully you can get it fixed.
I just bought a 2014 and had water leaking from over the drivers seat. I had a clogged drivers side front drain. 2 minute fix!!! These videos are so helpful!
Thank you helped me find the drain mine was leaking & clogged up bad
Hey, I removed my water pump the other day and noticed the weep hole you pointed out but also another hole that appears to be a weep hole also. It is kinda hidden in a small cavity. Mine appeared to have dried up coolant around there. I'm wondering if you noticed that other hole? Thank You
Very helpful, Thank You so much! 🙂😎
I’ve got a 2018 and the same “red rock” interior. My door panels have started melting at the top, near the base of the window where your left elbow would rest. Have you had this problem?
No I haven’t, but I have seen the problem with other owners. Most of them find the fabric and replace it themselves. There are some good YT videos on the process. If you’re on Facebook, join the “Toyota Sequoia 2nd Generation” group. A few people have done this in that group, too.
I dont see how anyone can learn anything from you when all you do is talk we like actual wrenches turning show us what your doing man cause it’s much easier to understand seeing it done
@stanleythompson5720, watch the other parts...I'm just explaining a few things in this one minute and 42 second clip.
Curious if this resolved all the leaking issues? I recently found soaked padding from the hatch/trunk area all the way to behind the driver's seat. Nothing on the passenger side. I've pulled all seats and carpeting (to dry out the padding) and went through the car wash several times to see if I can find any ingress. I haven't dropped the headliner, but reaching in at all four corners, it's completely dry. I suspect it's coming in via the hatch area, or through the floor. It's quite frustrating. With the driver's side paneling removed (b & c pillars) I found the pink/orange drain tube for the rear corner of the sunroof, I pulled it out of the port at the rear fender from inside the cab. The end of the tube has 45° cut on it to get it into the mating rubber boot that comes out at the fender. Blowing into it by mouth offered quite a bit of resistance. It certainly wasn't free flowing - probably on order of a drinking straw. Just curious if that's how yours was. haven't hooked up a compressor to it, or attempted to add water from the roof yet.
Yes, I have not had any more leaks since that "fix". I also put some black RTV around my XM radio antenna because there was a slight gap around it. If you have the XM antenna, check out that seal and see if you have a gap.
So I guess you don't have a definitive cause on yours - other than that it wasn't a clogged drain. I'm going to soak the vehicle with my 200gpm fire pump while sitting inside with a flashlight. I really hope it's not in the ceiling as the thought of pulling the headliner is daunting, to say the least. Incidentally, did you find any of the white plastic support/spacers loose? I've had two already separate from the headliner and create a tapping noise as they bounced when I hit bumps. I was able to pull enough of the liner down to reach in and remove them. I don't know how many there are in total, or whether you have all of yours still firmly attached. I have a 2011 Limited. Thanks. Subbed. @@hoopin4you
@@erkme73 At around the 19:00 minute mark, I show what the cause of my leak was...someone drilled through 2 of the 4 rivets on that metal crossmember. All four of my drain tubes were clear with no obstructions, so that's what prompted me to pull the headliner down for a closer inspection. I can't remember if any of those plastic trays were loose, but it is a known issue in the 2nd Gens. Most people just pull them out. I think they're just for routing wiring up there.
@@hoopin4you I guess I missed that. I saw the RTV, but figured you were just being thorough. I installed a lightbar on min a couple years ago, and had to drill two holes in the gutter just ahead of the front stock luggage rack mounts. I'd already done it on my Tundra years prior to that, so felt confident that I wouldn't get any leaks from it. It was during those installations that I got a pretty good understanding of the mechanics between the interior and exterior roof construction at those locations. What I don't quite understand is on the rivets that you found drilled out, did they actually penetrate the roof on the outside? I would think that those rivets simply held the interior roof/ceiling beams together, but neither side went to the outside. IOW, did the previous owner drill through the roof? You said you were going to blow it out to dry it before RTVing, did you find water in that space? Very curious as to how those holes interfaced with the exterior. Incidentally, the rivnuts (rivet-nut) I used to install the lightbar brackets on both the Tundy and Sequoia have held just fine - zero leaks there. I can access the underside of both sides easily by just pulling the headliner down in those areas.
@@erkme73 No, there were no visible holes in the outside roof. I think those rivets are probably in the sun roof water track that goes to the back drain tubes. Once I poured more water in that track, then I saw where it was dripping from. I love rivnuts...so handy to use and they do seal really well. On my '87 R10, I installed a 3-row aluminum radiator & converted to dual electric fans. I used rivnuts in the aluminum fan shroud to reconnect stock hose brackets...worked like a champ. I want to install lightbars on the Sequoia (and maybe my wife's Tundra...she doesn't really think she needs one). But usually when she sees the mods I do on my Sequoia, then she becomes a believer. 🙂 I upgraded my headlights to VLAND full LED assemblies with iJDMTOY LED fogs, and when she drove it at night & saw the difference from the stock halogens, that was all the convincing she needed to install them on hers.
Hi! Where did you buy this snake? Can’t find something like it. Thanks!
This should work: Cobra Enterprises 00710 Skinny Snake Drain Cleaner, Black a.co/d/6gwbYOz
Great video. I have a 2013 Platinum and had some water intrusion last week during Hurricane Idalia. Some by rear hatch, some 2nd row passenger floor, and some rear interior lamp/headliner area. Found a few missing plugs and a few clips and failed caulk in hatch area and a missing plug in 2nd row passenger pillar where water would drain between door and body. Next step is to check sunroof drains, XM antenna, and other roof penetration to see how it got up into headliner area. Thanks for the video! Great job.
Yeah, I also saw the gap for the XM antenna and sealed that up with some black RTV. I couldn't reach the nut for it without bringing the headliner down in the rear (and I didn't want to create more work for myself). Hopefully you get everything figured out & fared well through the storm.
Ran into the same thing with XM antenna. Pulled the lamp down, thinking it was right over top and I’d have access to the nut. Of course I didn’t. I did wind up putting some white silicone around spoiler light penetration as the foam weatherstrip they used was shot. Need to get some black for the XM antenna. Good idea.
where did you get the filler strips between your bags and fender? Did you fabricate them. thanks
They were fabricated by a good friend of mine who also helped me with the custom rear fender.
BADASS !!!!!!!!!
How does that stand work, how do you raise the motorcycle up to rest on the horizontals.
The stand was made by a fellow VTX rider. You just use a regular m/c lift to get the bike up high enough to rest on this stand. It was made to accomodate the width of most of the lifts out there.
@@hoopin4you Thanks for that verification, simple but brilliant.

Hello Sir i love this Bike. i have this same bike. Can you tell where i can the exhaust that you have on your bike please.
The exhaust was made by Roadhouse and they're called Dooleys, but the company is no longer in business. So you'd have to find someone to make a set for you...or make them yourself if you can.
Is he in the Chicagoland area? Thanks
@@hoopin4you I just reread your plate. You are in Tejas. Please disregard 👍
I’m watching your clutch removal on a VTX 13 or 1800 and I was wondering about taking the center nut off of what I think is called the clutch basket? You had a video memory problem and it didn’t show that so my question is were you able to just use your impact gun to take that large nut off the center shaft? Is that also a one time nut? Thanks in advance for your help.
Monty, yes, I was able to just use the impact gun to get the nut off of that clutch basket, and it is a one-time use nut because you "stake" it when you reinstall it.
I don’t understand your videos? Where is the content?
This is Part 2...watch Part 1.
what fairing r u using on the front of the bike
It is called a VTX Ultra Fairing and is now made by Stumpwerx. It was originally made by Xtreme Revolution, but they went out of business and sold the molds to Paul. Last I heard, he was having supply-chain problems and wasn't sure if he could make any more...and he said the molds were getting worn from all the use all these years. phatpartsoutlet.com/honda-parts/extreme-revolution-ultra-fairing/
So never reuse the same clutch bolts correct?
Correct. Goheen Cycles sells the upgraded stronger clutch bolts for the VTX. www.goheencycles.com/product-page/jb-strong-clutch-bolt-kit
Only thing I’m afraid of is with this new bolts I buy I’m afraid of braking the bolts again.even with 9ft lbs

I would have loved to see where you drilled the holes for more oil flow on that basket. I want to drill mine out, but I don’t know exactly where to drill the 0.187” holes.
I wound up not drilling the holes, but if you want to see how it's done, this post over on the CA X Riders forum has all the info you need. www.californiavtxriders.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=19067
Also, did the slop or slack in the chain go away after changing it out to a new one on your oil pump drive system?
@@richardjeun No, but I learned it was normal slack and had been fine since the clutch install.
FYI: drilling holes on your basket helps the oil flow to cool the clutch system and springs. Over time, those rubber dampeners wear out and springs gets shorter due to hot oil or lack of flow to cool them, which causes clutch shutter or moaning noise.
Can i ask a question? I have a problem where the clutch wont disengage on my 2004 vtx 1300s...i have adjusted the cable in and out and still wont go into gear without jumping...replaced the clutch cable with a new one and still the same...do you think it would be the Fibre friction plates...dont think it has been relplaced...bike has only 50,000kms on it...cheers
Sounds like a possibility. Also, when was the last time you did an oil change, and did you use oil that is non-energy conserving?
@@hoopin4you I was thinking Bout that when I was typing....wondered if it was to do with oil.....was last done 4 years ago....but haven't ridden it much only 4,000 km
@@hoopin4you sorry for the dumb question....they are a wet clutch aren't they?
@@Darrylmc63 Yes, it is a wet clutch. I would drain and fill with a good quality, non-energy conserving oil (I use Amsoil synthetic) and see how it works afterward. That's not a lot of km but it is a long time between changes.
@@hoopin4you Hey hoopin4you...we had no luck with the oil change, clutch still wont disengage. I ordered some new friction plates as well, when we were taking the friction plates out they were almost all stuck to the steel plates. Would that be why the clutch is not disenaging?
Have you had a problem with a grunt when taking off from a dead stop with a cold bike sounds like it's coming from the cluch
Before the change, I was getting something like that and the 1st to 2nd would slip when the bike was cold or if I got on it hard from a stop. After the change, it's been fine.
Thank you for sharing..Excellent video!
So you don't have to pre soak the disc before putting them in?
No, you still need to do that...I let them soak overnight.
@@hoopin4you ok it didn't look like any was on them.
@@BigKahuna_outdoors If you look at the Zip-loc bags, you'll see the oil there on the outside where the plates were sitting once I took them out of the bags.
The basket drilling is done on the Kawawsaki vn700-750 for helping with the bike lurching in first gear if you engage clutch a few times it stops they call it the coffee maker sound lol I went through it but never drilled my basket.

As long as you stick the landing, you'll pass every time.
This video is good for one thing, you can get to know the inside of the VTX 1300. The mechanic, on the other hand, is completely amateur, doing things that can even do damage. His clumsy, clumsy movements are annoying. I would never trust him to mount my engine.

Just curious... if you just needed to replace the clutch, what was the reason you stripped the entire primary drive? Changing the oil pump drive chain would be a reason but you didn’t plan on that originally. It was very informative to observe everything you did however.
When I felt the slack in the chain, I had no idea if it was normal and couldn't find an answer online on the forums or elsewhere. So I figured I'd go ahead and replace it for good measure while I had it open already.
My opinion is that that the lash you refer to is normal.

The oil pump chain will have slack, just like on a chain saw or drive chain. It tightens up during load. If the chain is too tight, it will stretch I believe. Great video series. Very helpful for when I go to replace my clutch pack. I should probably change out the oil pump drive chain like you did since you have it apart.
That makes sense. I'm not sure if I needed to change it, but with that many miles on it, I figured it was at least for peace of mind.
Thanks for posting, very helpful.
