This whole idea of incorporating an expansion tank would make sense if it weren't for the existence of a built-in check valve in the cold water supply inlet of the hot water heater. If that check valve never allows for backflow to occur than what is the point of installing an expansion tank on the cold water side? It would only make sense to install it on the hot water side.

You are spending about $60 in brass fittings. But if you go with PEX then you all you have to do is suspend the tank using some cheap plastic strapping and screws, it seems that would be a lot cheaper.

I'm confused because the manufacturer and most codes dictate that the Anshen tank be 18 inches from the cold water inlet on the tank. This seems to be much closer.

Thank you for the explanations. I see that is a Rheem water heater. What model? Shutting off the water to the house completely might not work. You might have to bleed the line by opening a faucet in a bathroom or kitchen as well. I will have to measure to see if I have space to add an expansion tank for my water heater. And I will have to see about getting something to tether the water heater to the wall so it can't fall over. Right now it just stays upright on its own. For people who have trouble threading the expansion tank on without crossthreading-- try turning it backwards first until it clicks in place. Then turn it the correct way to tighten.

On the bottom of your thermal expansion tank, I would add a ball valve just in case your thermal expansion tank goes out and the customer cannot get a plumber right away to replace it, and still have hot water.

The problem with this installation is it is against the code. The tank is not allowed to be supported by the pipe it is connected to. You must support the tank properly. (IPC 308.10)

Is it safe to test the pressure and adjust the pressure while the expansion tank is already installed it already exists in the home I just bought. I just want to make sure it was done properly or do I need to shut down the entire system and uninstall it to check the pressure and adjust if needed?

Nice video. I might have missed this. Is this the correct orientation for the expansion tank; connect it on the bottom and the air intake on top? The reason I am confused, when looking at the picture for the link of the tank below, it looks like the right side up shows the tank is the opposite by the label on the tank. Common sense would give me the answer, but I guess I have none and was wondering if the label is wrong-side up.
