      Yes, it does send out the morse code signal when in range of the ILS frequency coming from the airport runway. You have to turn on DME1 to pick up the signal. You can find it by pressing Ctrl and 6 on keyboard to get the screen to the left of pilot's seat. Select Audio Radios and scroll down to find DME1 and turn it on. You will then receive the signal when you are in range.

    So basically, setting an altitude number in the autopilot is meaningless - you just have to use the v-speed up or down and then manually tell it to hold at whatever altitude you want to hold at, which pays no attention to the number in the altitude setting.

    • @IFRSKIES
      @IFRSKIES Місяць тому

      This could just be a bug that needs to be fixed. It really should hold the set altitude once it reaches the setting if the autopilot is on. Maybe the V-speed is not shutting off like it should when the altitude is reached.

      Look at the Heading Indicator dial on the cockpit dashboard (aircraft image) on either side of the Heading Indicator there are two dials on the right side is the heading bug dial. I have MSFS primarily to fly the classic DC-3 (and DC-6) I don't like the "push button and fly planes" that much and besides that, they don't have have that awesome piston sound - but hey, everyone has their own preference ;) But after a while, especially on the long hauls and be able to do some site seeing, it comes in pretty handy to have the choice to fly the DC-3 using GPS and AP. Although I have played with it for some days now it didn't work out that well for me, but after "studying" your video I'm able to enjoy the scenery a lot more, and do some monster flights without spending hours to write it all down on paper planning a flight (still great fun to fly "old school" though). I’m having trouble getting it to work as well. I managed to get the heading hold to work last night by fluke but nav mode would not follow my flight plan. I’m using the Xbox version of the game too so I can’t zoom in very close to the instruments, I can hardly see what’s displayed on the Garmin screen so that doesn’t help matters 😂 I’ll try shifting the camera forwards on the closest view and try see what’s going on but yeah it’s very fiddly.

      After much googling and playing around I found the problem was I was selecting nav too far from the line. You need to be right on it to guarantee it will work.

      For the camera you can try to use the camera panel on top, then it should have set camera prefixes, atleast on pc, maybe you can get a good view of the Garmin from there

      Once you get within range of the LOC1 (it will usually switch from GPS to LOC1 on it own) then you can hit approach mode and when you intercept the glideslope (GS) at the correct altitude the aircraft will begin the decent to the runway on the GS.

      Success,I just made my first landing on autopilot . I do not use an external flight route planner So it was difficult to see which airport has ils or not. But the VFR map (under the V button on your keyboard) provides all the necessary information when you search for your destination. There you can see whether an airport has ILS or not. Thank you for your help, I will practice this more often so that I never forget it again, without your help I would never have succeeded.

    Hi, when should we press APP button exactly? I didn’t get it

      When the Primary Flight Display changes from GPS to LOC 1(this happens when you are at the correct altitude on approach and close enough to pick up the localizer signal) you can then press the Approach Mode button. Watch as the green triangle comes down to the center of the altitude scale and then GS turns green (you will start to descend). If you are too high the green triangle will be below center and you will have to descend in order to pick it up. If the green triangle is above center it will come down as you enter the ILS feather and intercept the glide slope.

    Incredible tutorial. One question, is there no ingame/on flight list for the runway approach radio frequency?

    • @IFRSKIES
      @IFRSKIES 6 місяців тому

      Not that I am aware of. Often when you load a flight plan MSFS will auto load the correct runway frequency in active or standby mode for you on many of the aircraft. I always double check using little Navmap, Skyvector, flightplandatabase or other sources if you google.

      Yes there is, you can click the screen and select the flight plan there. Check out this video ua-cam.com/video/gPeUjfg-S98/v-deo.html

    Great explanations, thanks. One question. At about 18:20 the plane began rapidly descending and you said, "this thing's descending so I'm going to hit Approach." Does that mean the A/P will start following the Glideslope BEFORE switching to Approach mode? If so, why is it necessary to switch to Approach mode at all? Thank you for your time and effort!

      @IFRSKIES 6 місяців тому

      I'm not really sure why that happened. It could be a little glitch on this flight. Normally if you do not activate approach mode it will fly through the glide slope and not pick it up in MSFS. So you should hit the approach mode button when you are close on on LOC1. If you are at too high an altitude on approach it will fly above the glide slope and not pick it up.
