Lets not dress this up as something it wasn't, there was very little quality to talk about as Rhys returned for this weeks Match Day Review show. What we did get to talk about though was a performance that was, despite a dearth of clear cut chances, full of grit, resilience and then a bravery to go and win a football match rather than just settling for not losing. Still plenty of improvements t...

Not the prettiest of games between two sides with very contrasting form in recent weeks. Given how much (justified) stick the boys have had in recent weeks though, they deserve huge credit for finding a way to firstly nullify the league leaders and then push on and grab a winning goal. First half was fairly even with plenty of endeavour but neither keeper called into any real action, and it was...

It doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s league or cup at the moment, our current games & performances all follow the same depressing pattern. First half we started alright against a side from the division above, got into some good areas without really testing the visiting keeper before conceding an avoidable opener. Second period we played the game in their half & bossed the ball but ultimately ...

Genuinely not even sure what to say at this point? First half was as bad as it gets, aside from a bright opening few minutes. Too slow, too passive & we simply gave them far too much time & space in key areas as we conceded yet more avoidable goals to trail at the interval. Second period was better as we came out & penned them back, dominated the ball & played with more intent, but it sadly mea...

Great content as always fellas. Maybe you should get someone who disagrees with you Matt!! lol. Some interesting points though. I feel that we have been better this season, although not as good as we had all hoped and the mitigation is there for all to see. I think Bonner deserves at least until the end of the season and at that point we will see where the axe will fall in the squad. I have no doubt that there will be a number of players leave. My, not so, short list would include: Ehmer, Nolan, J Williams, Morris, Hawkins, Coleman. The Port Vale game can not be dressed up as a classic but it was 3 points. The first 25-30 mins were very good and I feared for us when Little had to go off. I am not Coleman's biggest fan but I thought he had the best game I am seen him play. We stopped them from having a shot on target and took all 3 points. Winner, winner!! Captaincy. I think it would have been difficult for Bonner to come in and remove Max from the job. However, he has made Little vice Captain. Little will captain the side next season I think. Nevitt, I think you were harsh on this lad. He gives 100% on the pitch, he gets pulled all over the place and complains very little. He lacks support. Hopefully this will change soon. I don't think we can put Ogie and Ehmer in the same bracket. Max is a very experienced player and should not be making the mistakes he makes. Highlighted against Stevenage but also was a fault in letting the Port Vale striker nearly score last Saturday (got away with one there). I agree with the intensity and mentality questions. Best player Little, followed by McKenzie and E Williams although I think both Lapslie and Hawkins should get a shout out due to there uncertain futures in the summer, they have not let the club down at all. Disappointment; Nolan without a doubt, although maybe playing him as a 10 might be his salvation, J Williams. Surprise package; J Gbode but not J Clarke. When I first saw Jayden in the early part of last season I thought we had a player on our hands and then he was in and out of the team, his confidence dropped and was bang average. Moving forward. Hoping to see what Dack can bring and then a string of youngsters like Giles, Sargant, Skipper, Webster. Keep the content coming. Oh can't wain for Mr Scally to make an appearance in The Factory. Up The Gills
Yet another excellent video gents. Although i agree with all 3 commentators, Jack really is the most honest contributor, and made me laugh. Matt and Reece brilliant of course. Now i know that all these players are on contracts, but Nevitt and Nolan really have been flops. Maybe they dont like being so far down south. If there was a way of releasing them, along with Rowe, Dieng, Williams, then i could understand this. That is 5 players who could be replaced in january, with players who really want to play for the shirt. 5 new Armani Littles so to say. These players would no doubt find other clubs. As for Max Ehmer he comes across as being too quiet, and too nice to be a real leader these days. no one can doubt his service to the club, and he is rarely injured. i can remember a game, a few years back where he dislocated his shoulder, yet still played the following game. that is real committment to a club. AsJack said, you also need 2 large defenders in this league that are dangerous at corners and free kicks, and who score. Where are ours. We are almost non existant at set pieces. Andrews, when fit could be our key scorer this season...if we can and he can keep himself fit that is. Lots too play for guys. But the dead wood has to go
COYG
Brilliant video gents. Loved Jack's amazing description of Mr Scally's character traits. 🍻
Andrews is key player for the rest of the season, keep him fit and he enables us to play the way Bonner wants. Partner him with Wyllie, that's a combo to scare defenders.
@@KevinHodges-v7n yeah would love him to stay fit enough to have a consistent run, think both Wyllie or Wakeling could thrive next to him.
Totally with Jack on most things.Captaincy is a problem.I like Ehmer.
Thanks guys
Name some of the players who got previous managers the sack ?? Ehmer is certainly one of the suspects.

Can we not start a sponsor a goal and it pays for the Brain Moore Stand? Everyone who sees a GOAL pays 50p or £1 if the players don’t score they put in£5 per game. Is that not worth a challenge.
It was a pen 😂
@@TVFTM don’t think it was, as Vale fans have said why does Curtis lob himself to the ground, step past him and it’s an open goal.
Thanks for the match review Matt and Rhys, hopefully the last match I’ll miss through illness this season, pleased for Jayden again! Pleased for Mark Bonner! As Rhys said he has been criticised for some substitutes this season, but the players do have to play to the system he is working! And it did all come together in this match! Also really pleased for the fans, well done to us all for sticking in there! I know how we all felt at Swindon it did feel like a loss! But let’s kick on now and get a few more 3 pointers for us all! As always UTG ⚽⚽💙
Good show guys, I guess you aren’t covering the Stevenage game on Tuesday?
Whilst a win is always welcome we might want to consider that 1 swallow doesn't make a summer. We had 1 shot on target all game and that came from our leading goal scorer who spent 80 minutes on the bench!! Our problem remains that none of our strikers have scored more than 1 league goal this season and we are a third of the season in. This won't get us promoted until we change our system and look closely at our strikers. Thank God for Jayden Clarke. One bright spark this season
@@alanhickm869 we have changed our system for the last handful of games?
Good to watch you guys picking to bones after a win 😅 it’s been a while
Excellent review, and although the game wasnt good, this was a Gills performance, that we expect. Yes, these players can play better, and they will, once the confidence returns. Also, we did our homework on how Vale play, and it worked. Was great to see Mark Bonner with a smile on his face. This horrible run has been beaten, and all the teams above and around us, will also have bad runs. 2 weeks to practice, and time to get the injured players back on the grass. December is close, and 6 games to get us back challenging for promotion
I was worried when Little went off. However, Coleman was outstanding. Probably the best I have seen him play.
@@andyburns2385 agree, then backed it up at Stevenage Tuesday night too
@gillsinthebloodgitbtv460 good effort. Great to see Andrews on tge score sheet. Must meet up for a beer
Missed the game yesterday due to other commitments so thanks for this Gents.
I thought that Vale were the 2nd worse side I have seen this season. Only behind Swindon. I thought we put them under pressure from minute 1. Vale did not have a shot on target all match. They had a threat but either misplaced a pass or we got a block in. Little was outstanding whilst one the pitch and he was, by no means the only one. I agree with Rhyss that we should convert more chances but we are now making chances. This, however, can not be a one off if we want to achieve. Bring on Harrogate
We done our homework on Vale
Talking of the massive improvement off the field. I am told the sponsorship of the Brian Moore stand until the end of the season is worth £150k and the there is a further 4 more seasons of that deal to run!!
I think turner got a touch on the ball
Not a game that is going to be ranked as a classic but will take the 3 points. Thought we were going to see a lot more from Port Vale going by their league position and to be honest, was expecting a bit of a spanking so quite surprised to find them not much better than us on the day (especially the number 22 who was awful) but football is like that. Massive miss by Stockley and the dodgy penalty decision were the only real moments of danger I felt and then the smash and grab goal by Clarke sealed the result and hopefully something that kicks off the season again for us.
Really important 3 points but also lucky as Port Vale had best chance to score in second half and should of had a penalty in first half.
annoying result both teams were rubbish but on the whole we deserved a draw good support from us since its a long 4hr journey for our 523 valliants
I don’t think anyone could argue if it was a draw , 1 shot on target from both teams is a poor showing and the one on target proved to be pivotal, good away support your right 👏 👏
@@Jimshady-o7c defo agree with you there mate what team do you support
4 hrs Valiant fan? Surely nothing? Poor match i hear, but we surely couldnt keep losing and you couldnt keep winning. Our troubles nowhere near over, no confidence in the club or the manager, work to be done in the window.
@@richardkorbel7279 i think gillingham have a decent team i heard they have got a few players back from injury so you guys could maybe do a 10th placed finish as for us we were poor and very little quality to show for our fans annoying more because we have to drive 4hrs back but good luck in the season
Arrived at the game hoping for a point and expecting to see an exciting Port Vale side. Very disappointed with Vale. Almost as bad as Swindon. 3 points, what a difference in the attmospher. Bring on Harrogate

Nice to see you Saturday matt. Spot on same old problems going forward needs to get sorted else another lost season.
Brilliant review Matt, and one of your best ones over the last years. All your questions and points Colin Smith answered along with yourself to perfection. Good point from the Stevenage fan and blogger to. Could be something in that. My view though is, we have a very good team with quality on paper, and they will all be on good contracts. However they simply are not delivering under Bonner. Has he maybe lost the dressing room. because he is trying to put too much information into their heads, which seems to be confusing them, especially on match days. Do the players know their positions also. And as you mentioned..are the training methods wrong with so many injuries. We have to have a positive run up to Christmas, otherwise its goodbye to any promotion hopes, and dare i say it, goodbye to Bonner. We will still have a half season to get it right, if this is the case.
It was weird, 5 minutes left and we needed a goal, we had a corner yet had 3 players on the edge of the box.
Matt. You are spot on with your observations. As Eric Morecombe once said- "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order." It's the same with the Gills. We are playing some of the right players but in the wrong formation and in the wrong positions. I have been very critical of Bonner, and as you question, he has to take responsibility. As you point out, you can't be all things to all people. Would Pepe G ask Haarland to play left back. No. So why did Bonner play arguably our best player in Clarke, at left back? Although Williams played well, why wasn't he played in his natural forward position? Why was Dieng so deep he left Wakeling isolated up top. Why was Nolan playing at all when his form just doesn't warrant it? Why are our tactics so haphazard that nobody knows what system we are playing. Yes, I know we have injuries but play a formation that plays to our players' strengths. We simply dont. That is down to the manager and not the players. We are tactically inept, and it's clear for all to see. We were 1 nil down and put all 11 in the box when defending a corner. Blackpool is 1 nil up and Bruce leaves 3 players up when in the same position. Bruce played a simple 4-4-2 and each of his players knew what to do. Lets be honest, they never broke into a sweat. Our back 3 or was it 4 or was it 5, never run into space. They pass it left to right before it goes back to Morris who then lumps it up field predictably looking for Dieng who is miles from Wakeling or anyone for that matter. The issue for me is that Bonner has all season set the team up in such a defensive way so as to not lose the game. We are never set up to win the game. We are therefore predictable. The result being that we go 1 down and we might as well go home. So in answer to your question, are we cursed? Yes we are. We have been cursed with 3 managers in Harris, Clements and Bonner, who show no attacking intent. We change our approach, and we change our fortunes. You have to look no further than Scott Lindsey to see how it's done. He's not the messiah, but he shows all the right intent. We had the chance to sign him twice but went for 2 unproven, inexperienced and dare I say it, cheaper alternatives. All roads lead to the manager. Recruit the best and he makes average players look good and good players amazing. Ask yourself one simple question. Who of the new 8 players makes you want to get out of your seat? Who of the existing squad makes you happy to be a Gills fan? Who is going to score more than 10 goals this season? And finally are we going to finish top 3rd or bottom 3rd? I know it's only a game but games are to be won and enjoyed. We have achieved neither since 2019. I leave you to ponder one stat. Steve Bruce played for us for 5 seasons and scored 38 goals in all competitions as a centre back. How many goals has our leading goal scorers scored over the last 4 seasons. CLARKE-4 [so far] MAHONEY-7 NICHOLS-6 OLIVER-10. TOTAL- 27. I rest my case!!!!
As a long suffering Gills fan for over 40 years nothing surprises me anymore, same old stuff, we have good players on paper, but do they know what game plan they are supposed to be playing? I am frustrated and disappointed with the results like many a fan, Matt has asked some really good questions. If all players were fit would we be getting results? Why are so many picking up injuries? All I can think of is MB needs to change training methods and really look hard at what style of football will win matches and still entertain. Most of us are not experts, but with the technology available to the coaching team these days, surely a plan can be drawn up and implemented? I suffer from mental illness and have done so for 30 + years, the thing that really picks me up is the Gills playing well, not necessarily winning all the time, but competing and playing for the shirt! I am at the stage I need to blank out Social Media and Gills related issues for my own health. Saying that my heart is and always will be with my beloved team, hope things overall improve for the rest of the season. UTG
Requested postcard enclosed. We are playing as if depressed. There is no change of gear, no innovation, no swagger. It is as though playing football is a duty not a joy, as though there is something to lose not something to win. For the second season running those players who have had success at the level elsewhere have none when they are with us. The squad is good enough. I don't think the solution is buying different players or sacking the manager. Something else is wrong. My theory, should anyone want to discuss it, is that we need to look at the owner.
Matt, interesting comments. I noted a couple of things you said. Firstly Bonner must be qualified for the job hes doing or he wouldnt be doing it. Really? As you make your way through your working life you will find out thats not true. i cant remember any in authority in my working life where a boss knows what hes doing, there may be one of course but thats how bad it is. Most are there ive found for the salary, most dont really care and most dont know what they are doing. Ive told some of them..they dont like it. But having said what you said, you then took apart Bonner tactically and basically agreed with me and others, he, in fact, doesnt know what he s doing. Because of that he ll be gone by November end. Dont get me wrong there are others in the club who Brad must weed out but we cant get shot of them just yet. Its going to be very difficult to get on top of this but if we dont, National League beckons more than before.
My 1st 11 would be Morris, Hutton, Ehmer, Masterson, Ogie, Little, E Coleman/McKenzie, Clarke, Nolan, Lapslie, Nevitt
Massive respect for the Bruce reception. Obviously helped by the fact he used to play for yourselves. Hoping for an upturn in your fortunes. Good club, good fans. All the best for the rest of the season
Mate, you re very kind, dont forget he is an absolute legend in these parts.
Thanks mate. Steve Bruce is a legend for us. I remember watching him play end of the 70s beginning of the 80s. He left no prisoners and we loved him. Good luck to yourselves this season, and brilliant support from the over 200 who made the long journey. How he never played for England will always be a mystery
Morris for me the better keeper , does bonner know his best team or system he wants to play like you say there is no pattern ?
He might when he gets a fit squad. Or near as possible
Was good to see some coverage of the game, as obviously not on i follow today. Same old problems as everyone has mentioned. No cutting edge where it counts. None of our trainers, present and past seem to be able to solve this problem. Was nothing wrong with the intention of signing Nevitt and Nolan, after their goal contributions for their clubs last season, but here at Gillingham, its not working. They must be wondering why they didnt stay where they were. Cannot see BG taking much more of this tbh
Decent performance but with the same failings. I can't argee with the other comment. Ehmer, Masterson, Ogie, Little, Coleman E (better than the other one), Clarke, Wakeling all gave their all. Final ball lacking though. Must get this sorted going forward. In Bonner I trust.
Need to become much much harder to beat. Strong nasty bastards required
Absolutely pathetic AGAIN. Only Williams Hutton and Morris came out with any credit. The back 3 can only pass the ball sideways or backwards. Clarke was played out of position again. Dieing was anonymous. Wakeling works hard but is isolated on his own. Little had his worst game the season. Nolan doesn't deserve a shirt. The attendance was reflective of the mood, as was the atmosphere. Bonners continued approach demonstrates he is out of his depth. He needs to go and go quickly. Or shall we wait until we lose to port Vale and walsall. At which point we will be in the bottom 3rd of the league. Make no mistake we are relegation fodder. Bottom 6 by Xmas! At this point BG wakes up and does the inevitable. Another shit season. As you said Matt, nothing changes. Y is that? Because we appoint such poor unqualified and uninspiring managers. BG must take his share of the blame and get his cheque book out and bring in someone with experience. Clements and Bonner simply don't cut it.
Without doubt my worst ever score prediction & that's saying something as there's been a few over the years!
Hi Matt is it possible for you to do as close up as you can as Sreve Bruce walks onto the pitch on Saturday and how he reacts for your matchday review. It really is an important event for him and all us Gills fans, especially the oldies, we remember who and what he was. Cant be there... Cheers!
See you there
