Ultra Kraut Running
United States
Приєднався 7 чер 2013
This channel chronicles my trail and ultra running adventures across the globe. Along with videos of various trail and mountain races I plan to share gear reviews as well as a number of "how to" videos related to long distance adventures in the mountains.
I live by my motto "It's impossible to have a bad day in the mountains". I love to challenge myself and have yet to find my limits. In 2019, I completed "The Last Great Race of Ultrarunning" which consists of completing the six oldest 100 milers in the US in the span of 14 weeks. Since starting ultra running nearly 15 years ago, I have completed more than 150 ultramarathon races including more than 30 races of 100+ miles. In 2022, I tackled and completed my first 200+ mile events at Moab 240 and Tahoe 200 after failing at my first attempt at the Bigfoot 200. This summer, I completed both the 268 mile Spine Race in the UK and the Tor des Geants 330 in Italy. 2024 promises to be just as exciting and challenging.

268 Mile Winter Spine Race | BRITAIN'S MOST BRUTAL
On January 8, 2025, I traveled to the UK once again, this time to tackle the 268 mile Montane Winter Spine Race. 18 months earlier, I had traveled here to successfully complete the summer version of this event. The Spine Race travels the entire length of the Pennine Way National Trail from Edale, England all the way to Kirk Yetholm, Scotland. The Winter Spine presents runners with the harshest conditions Great Britain has to offer and this year was no different, requiring multiple course changes due to extreme snow and ice conditions. This made for slow progress, especially early on in the race. Conditions would change dramatically over the course of the week. However, I never got the opportunity to experience the latter stages of the race as my race was basically over before it ever began. A foot injury from early September 2024 flared up unexpectedly, cutting my journey very short this time around. However short my journey, I did get to experience some of the most spectacular views this race has to offer, so while I have to go back to be able to see the entire route in winter, you do get the opportunity to see a few of the most spectacular waypoints along the early miles.

The Crazy Mountain 100 in Montana was the first race I ever attempted that strongly suggested if not mandated that runners carry bear spray as part of their running kit and to make sure that it was easily accessible. Grizzlies are a real concern as we travel through their native habitat. Thankfully, neither I or any other runners found use for this piece of kit, but it is always better to be sa...

The Kendall Mountain Run is a 12 mile mountain run in the San Juan Mountains in Silverton, Colorado. It takes runners from downtown Silverton to the summit of 13,000' Kendall mountain and back down again for nearly 4,000 feet of vertical gain and equal descent. I had signed up for this race along with the Silverton Alpine Marathons 50K taking place a day earlier to complete the 2024 Aravaipa Mo...

The 2024 Tahoe Rim Trail 100 was meant to be the continuation of my summer of mountain 100 milers to continue to check off US states with a completed 100 mile or longer race. Unfortunately, things did not go as pklanned and instead of my body making things challenging, it was mny mind that had other plans. While my race didn't go as expected and, spoiler alert, I dropped at mile 56, you will ge...

Thank you for share this beautiful vlog, we just watched, and you did the right thing to pull out with your achilles tendinopathy that started to flare again in your last week of preparation. To me it seems the winter SPINE is twice as hard as the summer one. We hope you recover quickly from your injury 🙏
Great video despite the disappointment. You’ll be back stronger! Best of luck with the recovery and hope you can attempt it again next year.
@@callumoshea5028 thank you! Hoping to get a spot for next year to get redemption.
I love walking and will do so for an hour, an hour and a half tops, and then I go and do something else and have a nap too.
hey brother do you have a full gear list somewhere?
@@brettzehner2695 thanks for the reminder. I will post it to my blog or share it in a short video, or both soon.
Leeds fan at 9:50 MOT
Just watched this all the way through to your finish and then you switched to after the race with your van parked out on the course with you handing out crisps and flap jacks and it dawned on me that I passed through after Dave and Liam with Ryan from the US and you gave us some snacks, thanks Harry, appreciated
Wish I could take credit for handing out snacks, but that wasn't me:-) I was stretched out in an AirBnB until the next morning, when it was time to head back to Manchester for my flight back home to the US. Maybe someone else's video?
@ultrakraut yes, sorry. I was typing out a comment to another Spine video and by the time it had posted the comment auto play had rolled over to yours! Apologies. Still really appreciate your content. See you on the trails!
@@colinwoollard5739no worries and thanks.
Sad for you but you did the right thing. To early in the race to manage a bad injury. I loved the views. All the best for the future 👍
Thank you!
Awesome!😎
Fantastic video. You did 35 miles further than nearly everyone else on the planet.
@@grantwallace1882 thank you, much appreciated!
Good effort, at least you participated, which will be of no consolation but it put's you in a group of people who are at least prepared to try these hard challenges. This years race was fantastic to watch, I was addicted to the 'dot watching'. I've completed the Pennine Way myself, back in 2022, so know the route well and especially the latter section in Northumberland, the Cheviot Range, my back garden and where I do my training. Well done & hope you get another chance at the Winter Spine.
Thank you for your kind words, I’ll definitely be back to try again! I have to complete my summer/winter spine set. A DNF every once in a while keeps one hungry and motivated.
That course is tough. Exposed, elevation, heat, etc. during Tahoe 200, I remember getting zapped around Marlette lake
Yeah, heat hit me only in one spot during Tahoe 200 and that was on the powerline climb, ugh.
@ yikes. Up Powerline was terrible! I thought it was the worst stretch imaginable until the return trip going downhill took the cake
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Well done and best wishes
Thanks very much, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Was watching your dot on the race - hope you are back next year and all recovers soon.
Thank you, that’s the plan.
It's not the end❤.... Next year you'll finish. It's a brutal race. See you next year 🫂💪🏃
Agree, hoping to be back next year.
Very sorry to see that. I do hope that you gwt another chance to do the Winter Spine: you are a skilled video creator and I would enjoy from my armchair your take on the entire race. Good luck recovering
Sorry you had to pull the plug but smarter than “toughing” it out and maybe taking yourself out of running for a long time. You’ll be back. 👍
busy summer ahead:-)
Truly evocative of the trail. A relative of mine ran the Winter Spine this year but I'm even more impressed with his achievement now I have seen your video. For folk like me, nearly 70, running the Spine is not an option, so many, many thanks from me and loads of other dot watchers for this great video. I hope you recover quickly and come back to run the Spine one day. You are truly an inspiration.
Thank you so much, that means a lot! I will definitely be back to finish what I started.
No, what a shame. Through better than running yourself into the ground. Will you try again?
@@SchmittsPeter absolutely, I’ll be back next year, if I can secure a race entry during the signup period. They are usually gone in seconds.
Martin, that was a hard watch at the end. It's hard to see anyone have to pull up, and I don't think it makes it any easier to bear if it's at the last checkpoint or at the first. I've been watching the official video footage, but it was even better to see the race from the inside. You shot some beautiful footage. I live quite close to where you had to stop and know those hills very well. You were fortunate to be up there to see them in snow conditions - although I know that would have made it hard going. Your filming and commentary were fantastic and I have subscribed to your channel. I'll be watching when you come back to challenge the winter Spine again. Debs x
@@gowildwithdebs5144 thanks so much for your kind words and thanks for subscribing! Let’s me know people not only watch but may actually enjoy my race videos:-) You have a beautiful area in your backyard.
Fantastic work to have shot such a great video under those conditions! You certainly brought home the tough underfoot conditions. Nicely edited and great choice of music, particularly the very apt Moonlight Sonata LOL! I'm sure, just like Arnie, you'll be back! Thank you.
@@fredhamond5827 thank you so much! I am also glad at least one got the choice of my music at the end:-)
@@ultrakraut Thank goodness it wasn't Verdi's Requiem ;-)
Well done on getting that far. The bog monsters of Black Hill got me on the CS! 😢
Sorry to hear that. Yeah, I figured it would change to treacherous bog later on.
Martin, I was dot watching and realised the news. I'd hoped nothing very serious had happened. I hope you can heal soon! I was excited for your spine in winter. Thanks for sharing this part of your adventure, helps a lot!
Thanks, hoping to get clarity on the injury here very soon.
Do people actually finish this “race”? My God, it looks just brutal! Good for you for just toeing the line. The human spirit prevails👍
The winner finished in 82hours or something like that. Absolutely crazy
A relative of mine finished this year in just under 107 hours, looking physically shattered. But then he has completed the Lakeland 100 five times (and dropped out from it when injured). As this video shows, you have to listen to your body and, if you are injured, drop out. Recovery will be quicker than if you try and plod on. As for finishing, even with these conditions of snow and ice, 55 out of the 160 starters have already finished, with another 23 still on the course. By 8am UK time on Sunday (the final cut-off time - after 168 hours i.e. 7 days) most / all the remaining 23 will have finished. They run the equivalent of more than 10 marathons, in the process ascending and descending over 10,000 metres (Mount Everest is only 8,849m), and are truly some of the most amazing humans you can imagine. Those I know well are also really good human beings.
Sorry you had to drop out hope you get well soon .loved your summer spine video .thanks.
Thanks very much, hoping to complete the summer/winter set soon.
Lol evidence that I was there, I am in your video. Awesome. It was my first attempt at an ultra (I was doing the Sprint). I managed 24 miles before pulling out. I miss managed my food and had a dizzy spell. I am certainly hoping to go back next January.
Sorry it didn’t work out this time,I also dnf from challenger North due to tendonitis 70 miles in,I’ll be back and I’m sure you will too! Great footage
Thanks! Speedy recovery to you!
That's a darn good 35 miles for the conditions and the pain it sounds like you were dealing with. I hope your injury heals quickly!. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the footage.
Oh man, I'm sorry. I'm also dealing with a recurring foot issue. Just when I think I've got it cleared it creeps back. I'm worried it's going to derail my bucket list.
Yeah, I'm trying to get a diagnosis here shortly, so I can start rehabbing and training for my massive 2025 year incl. summer mountain races in Europe.
Nice attempt, there will be others.
Yup, but it still stings:-)
Martin .... As we age, we get slower, but that isn't the meaning of the trip..... and i am so jealous of the beauty you get to see over and over. And your videos are worth being jealous of too.
Awesome footage mate! Looks like you got to taste the best of it this time around, the snow and clear skies looked unreal, serious FOMO. 😍 Hope you recover well.. will you be there next year? :)
Thank you! You best believe it, if I can snag a spot!
@ legend! See you there, if I can also snag a spot!
Cool footage bro!
@@oldpelican5181 thanks bud!
Wow... I imagine Crazy Mountain is boring after this!
Actually, all mountain races are exciting as they are all different in terrain, beauty and challenge.
what is your strategies to prevent blisters and the treatment if you get them during race? Awesome videos!!
I actually pre tape my problem areas (heels) before the race and then retape as needed during the race. If severe, I use moleskin around any developed blisters and tape over that. I strongly recommend the use of some type of line that creates a barrier against moisture between your feet and socks/shoes. I still haven’t solved blister issues permanently and I keep trying all kinds of things, but the retapping has been the most helpful for me personally. Ultimately, every runner is an experiment of one and what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another, but maybe this gives you some ideas.
I’m running this in 3 weeks! Did you have any navigation issues? I heard it can be challenging to follow blazes and marking at night? Any tips in general?
No serious nav issues that I recall. Be ready to get your feet wet. Most importantly, good luck and enjoy!
I was late in catching this - what an absolutely brilliant video! I cannot believe how articulate you remained despite such sleep deprivation and discomfort. Superb effort, and great film-making
Thanks so much!
It was good to run with you! I was behind Bobby in the beginning of the video. You offered some words of encouragement to me being a first timer. You were not joking about the night time being rough
Thanks, I hope you had as adventurous a day as me out there:-)
You had me at "running" 🙂
I'm running the NRG Trifecta this year, this video was great for scoping out the trails there for Cabin Fever and Rim to River. Congrats on the finish!
What an epic effort and run! Very cool!
Thank you!
Good luck, Martin!
Thank you, my friend!
I would keep these inside my backpack. Have a good race there!
Good luck Martin!
Thanks!
Great job. My husband and daughter both were out there running and I was crewing several runners
Wonderful! I'm thankful I got to run the final edition of this 100 miler.
Good luck at your next race, looking forward to the video.
May see you in Edale, Martin. Good luck! Have you tried liner socks with the waterproof socks?
@@sleepingdogfx6929 I will be using liner socks, but. It sure that makes them feel any better”cooler” or prevent overheating, but I’m sure I’ll find out:-)

Thank you for showcasing this special event. I finished the Charleston 100 in 2022 after DNF’ing in 2021. Noah is a great guy. The community around this is superb.
It’s a great event - glad you were able to finish!
Is there any race that I want to do that you havent done?!
