Diary of a Yorkshire Gardener
United Kingdom
Приєднався 18 тра 2022
Hi, I’m Francesca! 👩🏻🌾 I grow as much food and flowers as I can cram into our back garden and as of April 2023, my very own allotment plot in Harrogate, North Yorkshire🇬🇧
Our house and garden is rented so you’ll see I grow a lot in containers, to avoid disturbing roots when we next move!
I’m a keen advocate for gardening for mental health. Gardening keeps me sane in this crazy world! It’s also helped us save money on our ever growing food bill. I have learnt to preserve and can as much homegrown produce as I can, for all year round eating. We have 3 silkie chickens which provide us with our own eggs too!
Subscribe to my channel to see my progress through the year and learn how to grow and preserve your own food! :)

Allotment Diaries Episode 10 - Where have I been? | Diary of a Yorkshire Gardener
I can’t believe it’s been 6 months since I last uploaded an allotment diaries episode! Time really does fly sometimes.
There has been some very big changes in that time which have taken up a lot of my time 😬 Now Spring is here I’m looking forward to being back at the allotment and in the back garden as much as possible!
Sorry I sound a little weird in this video, I have a cold. Again. They’ve been none stop, one after another since December 😫
I hope you’re all well and looking forward to the growing season ahead! ☺️

AD | On a hot summers day I need to water the plants in the greenhouse at least once, sometimes twice a day! It’s my biggest chore by far. Going away without anyone to look after the plants is out of the question. I’ve been considering automatic watering for a while now to save on time and 2024 it’s needed more than ever, due to us expecting our second baby early Feb! I’ve been sent this fantas...

where did you get your nuts to plant
Thanks for sharing, i cant wait to start my own green house. Just waiting to move somewhere where its possible
@@skeleton_wolf6000 awww hopefully soon! A greenhouse is a game changer for sure ☺️
Will they grow indoors, on a window sill?
@@pachma405 maybe in a warm conservatory in a big pot. They’re too big for a windowsill x
@@diaryofayorkshiregardener Thanks. They're £1 a bag in Sainsburys at the moment, so no need to grow my own just yet.
Good .
So beautiful ❤❤❤ New subscriber ❤❤❤ Thank for sharing
I had such high hopes for my tomatoes, loads on the vine but only a few have had enough sun to ripen 😭 So chutney it is, and maybe some green fried tomatoes?
Love the chickens. Would love to do a collaboration with you at some point if possible. 😊
Thanks for the video, it's so interesting!
Thanks for the informative video! Mine are not producing any flowers yet, so I'm wondering if I've done something wrong since it's already September. Hope I get some yummy fruits soon!
Honestky it's been a terrible growing year and even mine have only recently flowered and started to form husks, whereas normally they'd be starting to ripen by now! We had a cold Spring :( Next year will hopefully be better! I'm going to have another go at trying to overwinter this years plants for an earlier harvest next year :)
Me too, I have been growing a plant since last year, and it's only started flowering in the past week. I hope the weather stays good enough to get some fruit off of it, it's been a terrible run of weather this year. I'm definitely going to try again next year, I'll buy another packet of berries if I don't get any this year. I read up and apparently, they sometimes still produce fruit this late, so there's still some hope left...
@@robokill387 absolutely still hope! I usually harvest into December (that’s in a good year though so this year will be interesting to see)
My physalis has lots of fruit flys on it I can’t get read of them and I have never had any fruit.
Oh no! If they're fruit flies I'd have thought they're attracted to overripe fruit perhaps? Or have you not had any fruit form yet? Do you have green husks?
Hey good morning.. im new subscriber . Im from Philippines.. Can you teach how to grow white mushrooms
Hello, I'd suggest buying a kit with all the bits included if you can :) You can buy the mushroom spores seperately and make the growing medium yourself but I haven't had any success yet
I'm learning
I'm glad :)
Sir, compost preparation method and the requirements used may be intimated please. Thank you 🙏

Really excellent sir.
How are the peanuts doing?
I haven't grown any this year sadly but I've already got some ready for planting early next year!
It really is a brilliant and handy system to have.
Absolutely! :)
Im groiwing this fruit in Sri lanka. May I know is there any affect from fruit fly to this harvest ?
My worry to plant garlic in a container is if they are going to froze during winter...
You kinda need them to freeze as it helps them split into cloves ☺️ once again this year I had a great crop (the best being in them tubs) and every single one had split into cloves. Perhaps it depends on your location and how cold it gets though.
👾
Awww it’s so cute maybe don’t use your tripod or the poor thing might be awakened and nobody likes a cranky before hot chocolate wasp he sleeps and then he shall wakes up and poolonoote
Let him fucking sleep
Please give us the details for begginner
Hi I am starting to plant them. They just started. I can't wait to transfer them to bigger pot. I know them back home. When we were kids we used to find them by the forest. They grow wild. We never considered them as real fruit or as big. But now I am just excited to see them. Thanks for showing me how to grow them. Thanks 🙏👍🙏👍🙏👍
I’m missing out! These look incredible-thanks for the video! ❤
me gives emerald:joke it looks like glow berry’s from minecraft
Wow! Beautiful! What are the purple tomato’s? X
They look very healthy, great video. Can I ask what compost you've used there please, it looks lovely? All the stuff I've bought is terrible, big chunks of wood in it. Or if it's purely peat based, it dries out in 5 minutes! Struggling to find nice stuff like that in your video. Thank you 🙂🙏
Like the way you presented
Enjoying your videos
Im growing this variety this year but i dont know how to tell when their ripe. Some advice is greatly appreciated.
With darker varieties I do a mixture of things to tell if ripe. Check the bottom, it should be more red than green and also give them a little squeeze, they’re a lot harder when they’re unripe ☺️
@@diaryofayorkshiregardener thanks for the advice!
Her little bum sticking out is oddly cute
that’s in secret staycation christmas
Thanks for the classical gas !!!
I once put a seed in a pot and forgot that i put it there and thought that i was growing pepper till they gre some berries😂
Just what i was looking for. Thanks ❤
Beautiful, I’ve just grown my own for the first time, hope they will be something like yours🌼😀
Good to knowthank you 😊 I haven't had a lot of luck with them in the past, something eats all of the petals. My dad used to grow wonderful ones in the 60s, it's a pity I didn't learn from him.
Did you fertilize them at all? If so what fertilizer did you use?
They are not just delicious. They also tart
Can uh explain me how to grow edible mushroom at home And how to select spawn and how to do it because I have a project regarding mushroom production at home
Better than blueberries!
How many mushrooms do you get. Is it a one time harvest or continues for months or the spores only grow a certain amount?
Each tub gives around 2-3 sometimes 4 flushes. You can make a spore syringe and innoculate each time you want to grow mushrooms.
All 3 of them laying ist egg on a same day...is somewhat unexpected Hard work is paid off ...🎉
Mushroom: "Where we growing today bois?!
I have one too but it’s small
white button is a mutant strain and causes cancer, very aggressive cancer
1. Only a very VERY small chance and 2. Only in uncooked/raw button mushrooms. I don’t know many people that eat them raw, do you?
@@diaryofayorkshiregardener a lot of people have eaten them for so many years, not knowing the risks
@@0pieamii honestly I’m not worried at all and certainly won’t stop me eating them (cooked!) but good for you raising awareness! 🙌

Gorgeous!
What a cute idea! I always see this kind of thing done with leafy vines but I've never see it with sweet peas. I've been trying to figure out better ways of keeping mine upright, I may have to give this a try next year!
Thanks. 😊
I've just found your channel, and it's so wonderful to see a fellow Yorkshire gardener. Where abouts are you? Im pregnant with number 2 and just got our allotment this week ♡
