Interesting kit, don't remember seeing this one when I was young.
Just an interesting titbit walther wever first head of luftwaffe was killed in one of these aircraft and with him died the luftwaffe heavy bomber programme!!
got one of these in my stash , built the ICM/Revell kit & wanted this one cos it gives the option of a radial engine version
I wish they could figure out a way to inject the engine cylinders without a sprue attachment on every cylinder. Looks pretty good though. Ive been curious how Dora wings compares to other companies since they do eccentric aircraft.
American version of the stuka, made the frog 1/72 version years ago!!
Very nice build, and good way to save the decals.😊
Good work on this build & video. I hope you consider consider doing another build of this kit.
Hope we get to see you build this mate , interesting kit 👍🇳🇿
Yes mate, every kit unboxing will get a build video
Nice
Great timing, I was thinking about this kit a few weeks ago. I purchased that very same kit back in 1986/1987 from a hobby shop in Ipswich. I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters at the time, and being an airplane nut, I took advantage of being able to grab all the kits I could while stationed there knowing that I would never see most of them for sale back in the States. I've never opened it, so now I know what it looks like ! 😁
I’m glad you now know what you have in the box 😆
Hell yeah!
'V' is the Roman numeral for '5', so it's pronounced, Mark 5b. I think this kit first appeared between 1977 and '79 but the shape is spot-on even if the detail is a bit 'clunky'.
This particular model and several more contemporary ones introduced some improvements, the rivets and low-relief panels that look spectacular, for me it is the beginning of what modeling truly is. They are not toys, I have been involved in this art since 1964 and I never wanted to play with them.
Nice build!
Thank you !
Most beautiful Jap plane and most beautiful ww2 bimotor in my opinion. Really cool aircraft
Great to see this kit again , I'm in my 60s and can remember building this intresting aircraft. Thanks for the memories keep the vids coming really enjoy , 👍🇳🇿
Legend... my father bought me that in Poland... 40 y ago....
Very beautiful models at ICM ! I'm setting up the A26C Invader with ground crew and it's really enjoyable. It really makes me want to build this one which looks very detailed !
FROG was the first maker of plastic model kits back in the 1930s
Hi. A nice little kit. These kits are of there time so no sprue letters. There are only a few parts to contend with. They weren,t heavy on detail but with a bit of work you can produce a good kit. I am old enough to remember building some Frog kits in the early 70s , a Me 262 springs to mind. But they were up against Airfix and Matchbox. The part of the instructions where you can apply for spare parts gives something away , the name Rovex was the company that went on to become Triang. They made model railways amongst other things. Also the address. Margate is where Airfix and Triang were based. I have been in the part of the building where they used to make their models. I also worked with someone who worked there when it was Hornby's factory. So as you can see there is some history there. Anyway nice kit and a good video , well done.
Thank you, the history insight is very helpful
Built that kit in 1973...
Oh nice! I hope it goes together well
Always liked frog kits my fav is the spitfire mk21 and the V1 flying bomb, they are cool kits!!
Love Frog Kits, they had style and weird kinds of planes. I got lots of frog kits.
Hi. This is when Airfix were in their ' Dark place'. The classic days of the 60s and 70s were long gone but moulds still existed. The were taken over by Humbrol/Heller by the 80s and the quality was waning. They were still using the open gate sprues which is why so many parts broke free. Also no poly bag to keep it all safe , so parts dissappeared in transit. Those vintage kits are nothing like what Airfix produce today. But they still have the moulds so they sell them as 'Vintage Classics' now. But with some work you can still produce a good model. Good luck.
Love vintage kits like this...F.R.O.G were quite good for the time....shame they went bust in 1977
Yeah I don’t know much about frog. It’s a shame really, as the sprues are good quality.
Just found your channel and subscribed. I've got this kit, not the Matchbox version, in my to be built stash. Look forward to the build. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you for the sub, hopefully no fitting issues haha
those paints are/were airfix's own range of paints, i believe production of them stopped sometime in the late 70's when humbrol themselves took over airfix.
See I never knew airfix had their own paints, thank you for you the info
The Box Top art on Reveal kits at that time was second to none. Yes, in could indeed frame it. Wish I had.
The vintage revell kits have some lovely box art, I’m definitely going to do something with the box once I’ve constructed to Kit
Love your videos ! Keep up the great work !!
Thank you!
This kit traces its origins back to 1969. I'm an old fart now, but back in the 80's Monogram was one of my favourite brands here in Australia. The detail was pretty good and price wise they were above the Airfix kits, but below the newer Hasegawa toolings that were really popular back then. For me the Monogram kits did a really good job of capturing the overall look of the aircraft and they were all better then the Airfix kits of the time. You could add some extra detail with fuse wire for brake lines and stuff like that and they really shined. Decals were also typically nicely printed too. None of the stencil stuff we get today on decal sheets, but the colours were always rich and nicely printed. This was one of my favourite kits from then. I don't remember anything special I did for it, but check its not a tail sitter. You might have to add some nose weight on this kit. All Monogram kits needed a bit of filler to finish them nicely, but their kits really rewarded patience in the build. You could end up with a really nice kit if you did show some patience. Dan
Thank you for the heads up on it being a tail sitter
One of Airfix's nicer older kits and you did a good job on it. Curious what brand gloss and matt varnish you used on it?
Thank you, the kit was really nice. i used Vallejo gloss vanish ( 62.064 ) and Vallejo Matt vanish ( 62.062 )
Note that the Type 11 Zero lacked a tailhook as it was landbased in China pre-1941 and was the first production model. The Type 21 was the first Carrier based Zero.
When every other injection molder was tooling yet another F-4, Matchbox comes out with Privateers, Heyfords, and Victors. Who could ask for anything more?
Nice video. I am so thrilled by the renaissance of the Airfix line - the kits are of fantastic quality after they spent about 30 years falling increasingly behind the pack and almost disappearing as a going concern a few times. Out of interest, which option are you planning on making for this kit?
Thank you, airfix seems to be making the right moves lately. I’m thinking of doing the one on the box scheme A
I built this back in 86 and with a broken wrist at that. I was 26 years old . Your vid took me back to an happy time. I'm 62 (numbers are reversed) now and still building, it never goes away. As for the kit, its not bad. Mine went together fine. If the decals are usual matchbox you should be ok mine even conformed to the refueling pods and this was before using decal setting solutions. It's a lovely old kit , enjoy it. 😉
Im glad the vid took you back to happy times, I think it’s going to be a fantastic model :)
I built this model back in the early 1980s. It came in a U.S. Navy livery, but I actually painted it as it's seen here, probably because of the Bismark connection. Not a bad kit, but I wish I'd taken the time to scratchbuild an interior, because you can see an awful lot through the waist blisters.
Give them a coat of gloss clear and they'll work fine!
Exactly! That is part of it, the fight to save this old model haha
First time seeing this 10 JUNE 2024 ….. This is VINTAGE !!!!! I have Two ( 2 ) REVELL PBY CATALINAS BLACK CAT and a early Pre-War Markings…. I want to do this one with the BRITISH MARKINGS tracking the BISMARCK…. ( did you know an American pilot flew that aircraft ) I’m going to look on €Bay to see if I can find this kit….. The DECALS are worth finding the kit for…. COOL 😎 CHRIS from OHIO 🇺🇸
I will try to save them but if not, the search for the decals begin
Built this in 1976. I still have it now, although it does need a rebuild. And yes, everything in a single bag, flash and all, no ID's on the sprues, a classic Revell kit from when kits were fun and raised detail was king!!!
So the sprues are supposed to be in a single bag.. this kit was a challenge back in the day then
Very nice unboxing. I also made a video about this kit not too long ago and I will definitely want to build this old model in the future as well. I am subscribing to your channel. Greetings Aleš from Czech Republic🙂👍
Thank you! Good luck on your build of this kit 👍🏻
I have this kit! It looks like a fun kit to build, and is full of the warm and fuzzy vintage feelings of kits when I was kid.
I plan on building it in the near future, you should get that warm and fuzzy vintage feel then haha
Looks almost as good as a Bandai
This looks like a nice kit looking forward to seeing it built Great Channel by the way!!
Thank you!
Want 1 of these...the Irish Air Corps also used them
1/72 and Matchbox.... I'm all over it
I built this model back in the early 80s. I left the removable cowl panels off so you could see the engines, as they were much better detailed than many other kits of the time.
Oh that’s cool, was the fitting good for this kit ?
Way too much ww2 subjects in their line up
yeah you have a point
Good luck with those decals.
Thank you… I’m gonna need it haha
The "photo of the actual model" was from a push in that era for "truth in advertising". I'm more a fan of the classic paintings on model boxes. Monogram was known for packing a lot of detail on fewer parts as compared to Revell and Aurora. Remember that the original masters were carved from wood in those days. I think they made the masters several times larger than the kit would be and then pantographed them down when cutting the molds.
