a lot of the infrastructure is honestly fascinating! i mean with history itself DEC was very prominent in the computer space before with the PDP-11 being the most popular minicomputer (read mini as big as a closet as compared to a room). Then with the computers themselves what i find most fascinating is the clustering of workstations. You'd say buy 4 devices for your 10 worker office (since a lot of office work is intermittent demand) and they would be able to pool resources between them and share the workload! This also makes two other common problems very easy, if you want to get more power you can actually just simply get another device and connect it to the cluster and for the other if a device fails your system can still be operational in a degraded state.

The target group was a different one. VMS was also not known for its GUI, but as a server or time sharing OS; workstations were only a secondary area. As the previous comment described, VAX systems were so-called "minicomputers", but they were not really "mini". Even my two larger machines (VAX 4000/300 and 200), from which the machine in the video boots, are still smaller ones. The first VAX - VAX 11/780 - came onto the market in 1978 as the successor to the PDP11, the first VAXstation - VAXstation 100 - in 1983; the end was in the mid-90s. In the meantime, DEC was the second largest computer manufacturer in the world. Interestingly, the emergence of low-cost x86 servers and workstations as well as Windows NT 4 may have contributed to the end of DEC.

Thank you very much. You are right, I really like these machines, even if they are from a time before I was born. I have some Ultrix tapes, but I haven't tried them out, partly because they are quite fragile due to their age. But some day I'll try to install Ultrix on one of my maschines, as well as NetBSD.

@davehohacks It's a good idea to do videos on Unix on VAX, I'm thinking of trying Ultrix and NetBSD. I also found an image of Ultrix 4.5, so I don't have to use my tapes. Unfortunately the prices for 50-pin SCSI went crazy, but I've ordered BlueSCSI as an media to install these OS on. Thanks :) I thought I have to make a small comment on that topic, but the beginning of the video was already recorded, therefore I placed it at the end :)

@@wskinnyodden Thank you beeing frankly. I know this is a bit of a problem, even my students tell me that my courses are the only ones that can't be played at 1.5x speed. But I think the only way forward will be to just keep going on and practice speaking, even in a foreign language.

No its not rude, its feedback. Dont need to go all snowflake about it. Just face it, most of us dont speak in a pleasant way. But guess what, that is something you can learn and improve. Just like video editing gets better with practice so does ones narration skill. And if you want to grow on yt well guess what, you probably need alot of fine tuning both here and there. Litterary noone just threw together a video and got 10M followers, it takes alot of hard work and dedication.

Der Präfix "Open" sollte im Sinne der "Open System" nur anzeigen, dass eine Interoperabilität mit Systemen anderer Hersteller besteht bzw. das gewisse Standards eingehalten werden (z.B. POSIX). Die heutige Verwendung für Open Source Software war damals noch nicht verbreitet. OpenVMS gibt es ja auch heute noch und es ist nach wie vor proprietär und man bekommt (leider) nicht mal mehr hobbyist lizenzen (wie noch zu HP Zeiten)...

@@DECcomputers Aus diesem Aspekt gesehen stimmt´s. Damals waren Systeme nicht zwingend kompatibel zueinander. Dass es kaum noch Hobbyisten Lizenzen gibt kann ich generell nicht verstehen. Wir Hobbyisten, die wie ich auch parallel beruflich in der IT sind, werden damit gleichermaßen ausgesperrt. Kann ich ein System nicht als Hobby betreiben, werde ich es kaum im professionellen Umfeld empfehlen und einsetzen, weil mir die Erfahrung damit fehlt. Du kannst von Glück sprechen, dass noch ein System inkl. Lizenzen auf den Maschinen ist. Ich habe einige Netapps in die Verschrottung gegeben, weil die Lizenzen beim Factory Reset getilgt wurden und damit sind die nicht mal mehr für Schulungszwecke nutzbar. Ganz schlimm sind dann Lizenzen die jährlich verlängert werden müssen oder auch Online-Zwang erfordern. Zum Glück geht im Open-Source Bereich immer mehr.

@@drstefankrank Das mit den Hobbyisten-Lizenzen verstehe ich auch nicht so ganz. Für VAX liegt es wohl auch daran, dass bei der Aufspaltung von HP diese Rechte nicht an die VMS Software, Inc. übertragen wurden, anders als für VMS für Alpha, Itanium und x86-64. Für die letzteren drei gab es bis vor kurzem aber noch Community-Lizenzen, die aber auch eingestellt wurden. Nur noch x86-64 ist über eine VM verfügbar, die ein Jahr lauffähig ist. Das ist auch der Grund, warum ich keine Alpha-Maschinen habe, da ich einfach keine Lizenzen dafür habe. Interessanterweise wird in U.S.-amerikanischen Foren darüber diskutiert, ob man kommerzielle Lizenzen überhaupt übertragen dürfe, da das wohl nach den Lizenzbedingungen nicht erlaubt sei (Ich habe die Bedingungen nirgends gefunden und DEC hat damals wohl Geld für eine Lizenzübertragung genommen). In der EU ist das aufgrund der eingetreten urheberrechtlichen Erschöpfung weniger ein Problem, aber sollte ich mal weitere Maschinen bekommen, fehlen mir die VMS-Lizenzen (Ich habe noch eine einzige freie und viel zu große Typ-D Lizenz für eine VAXstation). Alle anderen Produkte (DECnet, DECwindows, UCX, C, VAXcluster, …) können hinsichtlich der Lizenzgröße verändert werden und mehrere Maschinen können sich eine Lizenz teilen, das geht mit der reinen VMS-Lizenz leider nicht. Im Gesamten war DEC auch gut im Lizenzgeschäft, da musste fast alles lizenzieren; ich habe einen Storage-Controller hier (StorageWorks), den ich irgendwann noch einbinden möchte, da braucht man Lizenzen für die verschiedenen RAID-Level. Online-Zwang gab es damals zum Glück noch nicht und Abos waren wohl auch selten (wenngleich VMS auch zeitlich beschränkte Lizenz zulässt), aber ich bin mal gespannt, wie das in 30 Jahren sein wird, wenn das aktuelle Zeug als „retro“ gilt…

@@DECcomputers Ich fürchte aktuelle Software wird in 30 Jahren so einfach nicht mehr funktionieren, außer sie wird von Online- und Kopierschutzmechanismen befreit. Reparatur ist bei aktueller Hardware auch schon schwierig, weil es keine Schaltpläne mehr gibt und auf allem ICs mit Kopierschutz sind, die man nicht ersetzen kann.

@@drstefankrank Ich befürchte es auch. Allerdings geht beispielsweise die Aktivierung von Windows XP mittlerweile mit einem Skript welches auf GitHub verfügbar ist. Insoweit wird die Funktionsfähigkeit weiter aufrechterhalten. Kopierschutzmaßnahmen sind ja auch nichts neues, Hardware-Dongles gab es auch früher schon und mussten für die Aufrechterhaltung der Funktionsfähigkeit - was unter gewissen Umständen auch legal ist - umgangen werden. Die Sache mit der Hardware habe ich noch so gar nicht verfolgt, ich bin bisher davon ausgegangen, dass es dann problematisch wird, wenn Microcode vorhanden ist, da dieser - wie andere Software auch - urheberrechtlichen Schutz erlangt und damit den Nachbau erschwert.

Yes, you're right, the hobbist program was an easy way to get licenses. Fortunately, I have enough commercial licenses for my maschines at the moment, but I don't have licenses type A (I have type B, C and D only), therefore I had to change the Model ID of my VAX 4000/200 with a little script (I'll talk about it in a further video) and it is a VAXserver 4000/200 for VMS now. I think, I've read, that VMS Software Inc. does not have the rights on VMS for VAX, but they have ended the community license for other platforms as well. From a legal standpoint, I cann't recommend piracy ;)

@@DECcomputers As a PDP-11/VAX11/730 restorer, I am enjoying the video. I keep thinking about getting into VAX4000s or MicroVAX machines - but my wife would murder me if I came home with any more hardware.

@@DECcomputers Yeah, my 11/730 is the size of an American clothes washing machine. lol Fortunately, I have spare boards and I restored it once already while I was in college in 1994 and was running. However, I have had it in storage in a very hot and very cold place for the past 28 years. I think some of the large capacitors probably shorted out and the capastans destroyed on the TU58 drives that load the microcode. I probably should make some youtube videos taking it apart and videoing the innards and attempts to re-restore it again but I have never made videos before. Keep up the videos ! Cheers.

My VAX 4000/300 was in cold places as well, even with high humidity. But I'm surprised that it's still running so well. Yeah, the capacitors often cause problems, but they can usually be replaced. I would like to see videos about the restoration :)

Vielen Dank :) Ich bin mir auch noch nicht sicher, ob das Mainboard nicht doch was abbekommen hat. Das Netzteil läuft bisher auch nicht, da wohl nicht nur die Kondensatoren hin waren. Ich suche noch nach einer Lösung :)

Hat das Gerät wohl auch, zumindest ist es einer der Fehler den man sieht, wenn man es einschaltet, das kann aber auch nur ein Kontaktproblem sein. Ich habe das mal mit dem Netzteil der StorageExpansion getestet, die ja auch den passenden Anschluss hat. Ich zeige das aber im nächsten Video zu der Maschine :)

Vielen Dank :) Ja, das würde mich auch interessieren, da die Technik eigentlich auch von vor meiner Zeit stammt. Produktiv habe ich solche Systeme daher auch nie gesehen und ich lerne selbst mit dem Fortschreiten meiner Aktivitäten dazu. Ich hoffe daher, dass ich die VAX 4000/300 wieder zum laufen bekomme, da hierauf noch die produktive Umgebung installiert ist, eine Oracle RDBMS sowie Pathworks (Zugriff für Windows- und DOS-Clients) ist darauf auf jeden Fall installieren, aber mal sehen, was man sonst noch so findet.

@@DECcomputers ja ich habe auch erst um 2008 angefangen professionell IT zu machen und bei uns war damals Solaris viel am Start, aber wurde dann auch alles durch x86 ersetzt. Ich habe vor einiger Zeit viel mit NetApp gemacht daran erinnert mich das ein bisschen. Die Idee mit Oracle und Pathworks gefällt mir gut. Da bin ich mal gespannt.

Solaris war bei uns auch lange Zeit verbreitet. NetApp ist aber wohl primär Storare, wenn ich es richtig verstehe. VAX-Systeme (wie auch der Vorgänger, die PDP 11) gehen aber darüber hinaus, im Endeffekt war das eines der möglichen Systeme bevor x86 aufkam (daher auch der Untergang in den 90ern). Gerade in den 70ern und 80ern wohl weit verbreitet, wenn der Mainframe zu groß gewesen wäre. Daher nennt man die Systme auch "Minicomputer", selbst wenn sie Kühlschrank-groß waren. Allerdings ist das ganze auch ein in sich geschlossenes System, was sich erst später geöffnet hat, daher auch in den 90ern der Zusatz "Open" zum VMS.

@@DECcomputers ja klar NetApp ist primär Storage und VAX viel mehr. Die Ähnlichkeit ist eher darin wie die Systeme administriert werden (Serielles Kabel mit Terminal) / Man "schaltet" die nicht wirklich ein oder aus die super robuste bauweise, der Preis usw.

For the beginning, DECnet and UCX (TCP/IP) would be great. But it wouldn't work without a Unit A VMS License on that maschine. Nevertheless, let's see what other software I have on Tapes.

Kann ich nur empfehlen :) Allerdings haben die Netzteile altersbedingt gerne ein Problem. Auch bei meinem VAXserver 3100 sind die Kondensatoren im Netzteil hin, da muss noch Einiges getauscht werden...

@@DECcomputers Also das Netzteil der 4000/60 läuft einwand frei. An die 3100/30 und die Storagexpansion komme ich gerade nicht ran. Aber ein Elkotausch wäre kein Problem

@@VAXGeek565Klingt nach einer schönen Sammlung :) Die sekundärseitigen Elkos scheinen aber auch die einzigen Teile zu sein, die Ausfallerscheinungen zeigen, auch nur die von SXF; wobei die Netzteile meiner VAX 4000/200, meiner VAXstation 4000/VLC und meiner StorageExpansion bisher funktionieren. Ich bin erstaunt, dass auch der ganze Rest nach wie vor funktioniert, selbst die Tapes sind noch auslesbar.

Vielen Dank :) Ich habe über ein Video über die Geschichte der VAX-Computer nachgedacht, auch die englischsprachigen Videos zur Geschichte von DEC gehen über die VAX schnell hinweg und springen von der PDP 11 zur Alpha. Dennoch wären zur Illustration wohl Bilder verschiedener Systeme notwendig, die ich selbst natürlich nicht besitze und ich müsste somit auf Bilder anderer zurückgreifen; da wäre dann die Frage, ob das vom urheberrechtlichen Zitatrecht gedeckt wäre (Ich tendierte aber zu ja). Die Hardware meiner Systeme möchte ich detaillierter vorstellen, wenn sie (wieder) wirklich laufen, mal sehen, wie lange das dauert… Natürlich könnte ich auch was Detailliertes zur Architektur inkl. der Instruction Set Architecture machen, aber dafür müsste ich mich auch erst mal vertiefend einlesen.

MicroVAX 3100 is a nice machine. I have a VAXserver 3100, which is basically a MicroVAX 3100 with another ROM, but I don't know if it working, it is a projekt for a further video. I've never had a deep look into Alpha, however I think about to expand my collection with an Alpha maschine.

The word is "VUPs", with a German pronounciation it sounds like "whoops" ;) But "VUPs" is an abbreviation, it means "VAX Unit of Performance"; I should say the letters seperatly in the future.

Thanks. I hope, I'll bring the VAX 4000/300 back to life and I can share a deeper view in its configuration and the Oracle RDBMS as well. But I have to learn a bit more about Oracle administration, because I've never worked with Oracle until today. I've never seen a PDP 11 in real life (I was born 35 years ago...), but I like the PDP stuff of @UsagiElectric. I'll show some more content about my VAX machines and VMS soon :)
