Do you want to see more of Scotland? I'm Rory, and I like to explore the mountains and wild places of Scotland.
Scottish Winter Wild Camp using Public Transport
Exploring the public transport options to the mountains, I travelled from Edinburgh to the highlands for a winter wild camp. This trip had everything from a moody sunset to a beautiful pink sunrise that lit up the snow-capped mountains. Beautiful landscapes, stunning mountains, Astro photography and some time-lapse made this trip quite interesting for me and getting to grips with the videography side.
Any questions on the trip then please drop a comment. If you like this content then please drop me a comment. Winter wild camping is a great adventure however is incredibly cold and I wouldn't recommend it without experience and a high performance sleeping bag and rollmat (x2).
Camera gear:
iPhone 13 Pro Max
GoPro 8
Sony a7IV
Equipment:
- Wild country Zephyros compact 1 tent (not a proper winter tent but was suitable)
- Mountain Equipment Glacier 750 Sleeping Bag
- Thermarest NeoAir Roll mat (could have done with another mat)
- Osprey Kestrel backpack
- Red Jacket = Mountain Equipment Lohste

Part 2 of 2 This was a very special trip with an extra special purpose. I linked up with my cousin Sophie to visit the Isle of Rùm to experience this unique island that was well known to our parents and grandparents. We walked in the footsteps of our family now gone, and Sophie spread the ashes of her dad on the mountains of Rùm in a spectacular location. It was truly a trip of a lifetime. This...

Photographing a simple but stunning mountain range | Beinn a' Ghlò

This was a late spring walk where I decided to revisit some mountains I hadn't walked in over 10 years. I was aiming to walk some mountains closer to home, and did not have great expectations for the landscape here, but I was reminded that even some of the less dramatic rolling hills can still offer some exceptional views in the right conditions. The sun was out, with some perfect patchy cloud ...
You Don't Need to go Far for Good Views | Navigating a Local Hill

A quick half day in a local hill was meant to be 'just a local walk' but turned out to offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The familiar views of the horizon were a little bit different from this perspective, was some of the hills looking unrecognisable from just a slightly different angle. I managed to take the big camera with me an try some artistic shots. Camera Gear: Sony A7 I...

A half day out in the local woods to get outside, test some kit and do a bit of filming! I haven't had much time to get out in the last few weeks so I've been taking my camera on short local walks. I am experimenting with artistic shots, capturing better audio and less vlogging type shots. Scotland in Winter | Exploring Loch An Eilein
Переглядів 342Рік тому
Some spare time in the highlands allowed me to explore the banks of 'Loch an Eilein' during a period of heavy snow. This is a very beautiful loch, with a small island in the middle which hosts an old castle ruin. This loch is a very short drive from Aviemore and Loch Morlich. Calm weather and no wind allowed me to experiment with the camera and drone. Thanks for watching.

A quick walk in the Cairngorms turned into a great wee adventure with some new faces I met on the mountain. I did a circuit including an easy scramble over Fiacaill Ridge. I finished with half a day at Loch Morlich where there was some incredible winter scenes.
Wild Camp | Winter Navigation | Snowy Glen Feshie

One night wild camping followed by a night in a bothy. This trip had a bit of everything including some night navigation to the summit camp location, a freezing wild camp, winter navigation on the plateau, and a great final day in a snowy Glen Feshie. It also gave me time to experiment with my new camera to try get some artistic shots. The Munros were Sgor Gaoith and Mullach Coach a'Bhlair. Cam...
Bothy Adventure in the Cairngorms

First winter walk of the season to blow away the cobwebs! I stayed in a bothy, and visited another during a long hike over Derry Cairngorm. I experienced some pretty strong winds and heavy rain on the mountain, but was rewarded with a beautiful walk back along Glen Derry. It was great to test the navigation skills on the mountain, and also try out the new camera with some atmospheric shots in t...
Sunrise of a Lifetime - Summit Wild Camp

What a day to choose to return back to the hills! This wild camp gifted me with the most incredible sunrise I have ever witnessed. The stars aligned with the combination of perfect weather, no clouds and a perfect camp spot facing north. Epic Winter Hike to Remember | Scotland
Переглядів 6162 роки тому
With a below average forecast, I decided to burn off some Christmas calories and head up to Glen Dochart to climb a few peaks to the north including the two Munros Sgiath Chùil and Meall Glas. The weather gradually improved through the course of the day, with clear skies and good visibility as I got tho the summit of the mountains. Again, I could easily see as far west as Ben Cruachan, north we...
Bad Weather Hike | Glencoe
Переглядів 6452 роки тому
I revisited Glencoe to tackle a hill I had heard a lot about, but never climbed before. This hill isn't a munro, but does get walked often for other reasons. It was another start in the dark, with a wet trek up the slopes, before encountering horrible summit conditions, including a little bit of sideways snow. Breaks in the clouds did offer some great moody Glencoe views. I was however presente...
December Delight - Bagging a few Munros in the winter sun
Переглядів 3452 роки тому
In the week leading up to Christmas, I climbed a few Scottish mountains in some very special weather conditions. It started with freezing conditions at ground level but the day eventually developed into a what felt like a summers day. The incredible visibility gave me views around 80km in all directions. I was able to see Ben Cruchan to the south west (67km away), as well as Glencoe, and the Ca...
Aww this brings back memories of my childhood. My parents would take us to Arisaig/Mallaig and the West coast of Scotland when i was a young teenager. I couldn’t appreciate just how beautiful it was at that age but thank you for reminding me how blessed I was to be able to spend time there. I’m 59 years old now!!!! It’s stunning and it seems like yesterday since I was there last. Nothing has changed which is the best part!
Good video
Thank you for following up with this after your WHW video. I definitely want to do Ben Nevis after finishing the hike this September and this was very inspiring and helpful. I’ve watched a lot of people doing the WHW recently but nobody seems to do Ben Nevis afterwards which is strange because it’s the part I’m most looking forward to!
Glad it was helpful! Doing Ben Nevis is the perfect way to send the WHW. I would highly recommend stating very early and making your way up to the summit when it’s quiet. Of course, always check the weather and be safe. September will be a great month to do it! Good luck
Walked the WHW last year by myself, just a great experience. But I still cannot get enough, watching other's hikers videos to see their experience and to have great memories. Thx for sharing.
I thoroughly enjoyed that walk Rory, thank you for posting it! 🙌 It was the next best thing to doing the distance myself, although alas these days that is not possible due to a mobility disability. All things considered your feet looked amazing right at the end!
Great film! Thanks....
Another fantastic film thank you Rory, the footage from the top is stunning, it’s the best I have ever seen. It was great to be able to see back to the WHW from the top of Ben Nevis, fantastic thank you for filming and well done. 🍻🍻👍👍👍🍻🍻
Wow Rory, what a fantastic film and well done on completing the WHW. This film really is excellent and packed with fantastic information, I will watch it a good few times, before my solo WHW walk in May this year 2024. Thank you for taking the time to film and edit, it’s fantastic for my planning and research. Well done and all the best, 🍻👍👍👍
Thanks for watching and I’m glad the video is still useful to people! May is a cracking time to do the WHW and you’ll love it. I’d love to give it another go.. This spring I’ll be doing a different walk.. haven’t decided yet.
@@rory_scottthank you for your reply Rory, I’m looking forward to my WHW walk. Have you done the Great Glen Way? WHW will be my first long distance hike, it is good to see how you with more experience compared to me, complete the different hikes. Thank you, best regards. 🍻👍👍👍
Good video , scenery , tips on keeping warm, public transport... Thanks for sharing Atvb G
Thanks for the watching . Cheers Rory
I'm new to your videos. They are amazing. You just can't beat our wee country for stunning scenery.
Cheers for watching. 100% mate there's a lifetime worth of places to explore here..we are very lucky!
Given you a sub. Really enjoyed that.
First I just wanted to say the quality of the video is amazing, this is the best footage of Rum I've seen and I've watched most of what's available on UA-cam. Second, a question- I'm planning to visit Rum in just a couple of months, and was thinking of splitting the Rum Cuillin traverse into two days, finding somewhere to pitch a tent halfway. Would you recommend this, or no flat ground to be found anywhere?
Thanks for watching! I’d say a great place to camp which is flat and grassy is Bealach an Oir, which is in between Askival and Trollobhal. You may may find camp spots further along the route, on top of Ainshval as it’s a broad summit, and even further along towards Sgurr nan Gilean.
That was a long walk with a pack, fair play to you!
Tent looks like a Hilleberg Enan. My first tent was a Wild Country Mistrel, it got destroyed in the Carigorms in a storm. Got A Hilleberg Tarra after that, their strongest 2 person tent.
The tent is a Wild Country. It's done very well for a few years especially for a cheaper ish tent. It's probably not the best tent for winter camping at all so I think I will be on the lookout for a stronger tent such as a Hilleberg! This tent is also the smallest 1 man tent ever, so Id like to get something a bit bigger for more space
Absolutely gorgeous views 😍, thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you 😊
Good video. Would love to see you using public transport to wild camp. I think you may be the first I have seen. Thanks so much.
Glad you liked it and hopefully it inspires you to use public transport to head out more! Cheers
Good one. I use public transport a fair bit to head north, train and bus.
Thank you, appreciate the public transport option v. much!
Glad it was helpful! 😃
Beautiful Vlog, Excellent Conditions, Great Purpose!!
Cheers! It was an excellent day and even better with a purpose. Cheers for watching
Hello Rory, Excellent Vlog!! Keep them coming, mate. Just here supporting one fellow begineer in their UA-cam Journey every day. All the best!!
I will try to keep them coming! Cheers for the great feedback and inspiration haha. Cheers for watching
Nice vid! I don't drive so I use public transport alot. I'm up Dcotland a surprising amount for someone that lives 300 miles away without a car but transport there is great. I like citylink, they even go to Uig! Good to see you back out :)
That’s dedication! Love it. I’m currently without a car right now too, so have been exploring public transport options for quick trips. The next stops such as Blair Atholl, Dalwhinnie and Aviemore all offer walking and camping options too
@rory_scott all perfect! I've a hankering for the quirang - citylink from Inverness stops withing a mile or 2nofbit. Check them out as they are more reliable that trains in weather I've found! Stay safe and warm. Thank you for the amazing sunset / rises!
Stunning views!! Thanks for the great watch!
Beautiful stuff as always. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks 🙏 cheers for watching
Great vid, wide mouth lucozade bottle makes for excellent p bottle
Haha I need one of these then! No chance I’m giving up drinking the tea 😄
Lovely video guys.
Great video. My favourite area for hiking and mountain biking.
Brilliant Rory, best upload yet, need to add rum to my to do list 👌
Hey, just subscribed, my partner The Solo Summiteer had me watching your videos tonight. Apsolutely loved this video and all of them. Didn't know your channel. Honestly I actually cried too when you guys were sitting down talking about the reason you were there. It's so lovely you both got together to that that's amazing! He will be extremly happy you did that, that's lovely. Always in heart ❤ Stay strong. Brilliant footage guys. What scenery you for with the clouds and sun. Stunning! Keep them coming. New sub here 🙏🙏
Hi there, so chuffed you found this video and enjoyed it. I wish I had time to upload more videos after I get comments like this. It was such an amazing trip with a special purpose, we felt like we were walking in the footsteps of our family. Rum is amazing and I think you should plan a trip there in the spring. Let me know if you ever do! Cheers Rory
@@rory_scott oh I've been already x we went tk the south bothy and went up to attempt the traverse but the could was too clagged in and it was too slippy. For the graded scramble we had planned to absail too. But i want to go back for unfinished business. I loved it.
Brilliant video Rory. Loved it. Really need to get out there. ATB - Dave 👍
Cheers Dave. I’d highly recommend it. The Rum Cuillin packs a punch for sure. Lots of remote wild places to camp. The ferry over there is dirt cheap too!! Get it booked up
What a beautiful trip and tribute to your uncle and father. He would have been looking down with pride and encouragement for every step you both took. I am sure his spirit took every step with you and thank you for sharing and reminding me of my good Friend and his legacy x
Thank you got the kinds words. Glad you enjoyed it too!
Wow!! This is phenomenal to share the journey with you & the moment of my brothers ashes scattered ❤️ Amazing achievement and awesome scenery x Super proud always of you both x
Glad you enjoyed it ❤️ it was a super special trip!
Absolutely stunning Rory .. so proud of you both … had a wee tear as it’s so emotive ❤️
Eigg was great I put a clip on my channel but it’s not professional as your videos but I was surprised how rugged it was keep the videos coming hopefully one of Eigg in the future cheers
Wow thank you that was awesome Rum is one of my favourite places did the traverse some years ago but walked back to Kinloch via Harris bay and plan to re visit next year but stay at the bothy at Dibidil and traverse mountains from there Great views very touching spreading the ashes but what a place. I camped on Eigg in September looking across to rum so it brought back good memories thanks
Thanks for watching. I hope you make it back to Rum.. I've also thought about returning and utilising the bothy! We popped in and it looked cosy. After seeing Eigg from the viewpoint of Rum, I also really want to visit it for a wild camp.. maybe next year!
A trip of a lifetime, thank you for sharing it with me Rory, dad would have loved this footage and everything about our trip x
Thanks Soph. What a trip.. It was a pleasure sharing it with you. Memories forever!
Lovely video. So calming to watch.❤
Oh Rory, Lovely to see you smiling so much, beautiful video, nice to be introduced to Sophie. Just the most beautiful scenery, hopefully a few images to share on Etsy....Thank you for sharing. P.s. my Scotland gallery wall is nearly finished.
Love a wee Rory Scott video. ALWAYS worth a watch and this one again, does not disappoint. Keep em coming sir. Safe travels. 👍🏼
Thank you! cheers for watching. Part 2 coming soon :)
@@rory_scott awesome. Looking forward to it already 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Superb, ma gt grannie fae North Roe, Willamina Tulloch. Nobody has ever been back. Bucket list😂
You did well to film yourself on the ridge in them conditions 👍
Lost count how many times ive watched this. What an inspiration Rab was!
Just finished this walk yesterday with my daughter found it very hard as have a dodgy knee ,but the views are fantastic
Nice! Congratulations, I hope it was a good experience!
@@rory_scott it was mate apart from the now very sore feet and me knees which were dodgy before I started it 😂,but it was for charity so well worth it
Wow just stunning. Incredible walk. Not sure why I always avoid days like this when it’s actually more spectacular. Nice one
Such calming and wonderful sounds and scenery. Rarely see a soul at the time of year either. Do you always take these trips alone? I’m a grown arse man but for some reason still don’t like the idea of camping solo. I’m desperate to start getting myself away to do this sort of stuff more often
Yes I go solo most of the time.. Very difficult to get people together trips when you get older, and I’m also quite spontaneous with trips therefore it means I end up going solo. Takes discipline and planning to go away often. Life can get in the way too!
@@rory_scott Too true, much harder when you become a proper adult to get your pals together. One day I’ll hopefully find a partner who’s interested in doing this stuff with me. That said, as a gay man, the pool of available guys is already small in the north, then filter out the ones who wanna hike or camp in their spare time or god forbid stop for the odd pint along the way and I’m left with being a solo hiker for the foreseeable. Never mind, that’s life!
Great video, lovely walk. It’s amazing how much is actually on your doorstep
Really good video - thx
Lovely video, great to see you back!
Thank you for the comment. I’m glad some people are still watching 😂❤️
