No other racing event immerses competitors in the food, drink, culture, and beauty of Baja, Mexico, like the Yokohama Tire NORRA Mexican 1000 presented by Method Race Wheel - “The Happiest Race On Earth!”. The competitors run the gamut, from offroad racing icons to current stars, adventure seeking average Joes, and the well-traveled lovers of Baja. NORRA is a multi-day rally race, and has classes for bikes, quads, UTVs, and full sized vehicles of all kinds including vintage racecars to state-of-the-art vehicles in the Evolution class. There are over 30 classes in total! There is even a Savvy Safari class for stock and slightly modified OEM vehicles (non-race vehicles that want to experience Baja racing and follow the race and experience Baja). NORRA pays homage to the past and celebrates the future.
Safety Guidelines for NORRA Spectators
NORRA takes spectator safety very seriously.
As a spectator of the race, stay off the race course. Both as a person and in your vehicle.
Do not stand, camp, or watch the race on the outside of a curve.
DO NOT TAKE A SELFIE WITH YOUR BACK TO AN ONCOMING RACE VEHICLE!

Not a single clip of the bikes or three wheeler again, why? John Vander Lans hadn’t ridden a dirtbike in 30+ years and at 59 years old he Iron-man-ed the race, he deserved the “Ultimate Ironman” award. We like Sara but if you have a co-pilot you’re not an “Ironman.” #ultimateslapinthefaceaward

FWIW, PJ didn’t win the 1970 Mexican 1000, Drino Miller won in a buggy and 2nd was Steve Rieman in another buggy.
PJ won the 1971 one but I think the main topic here was that a high-profile driver like him was racing it at all. By 1970, Parnelli Jones was a USAC Sprint & Stock car champion, Indy 500 winner, a Trans-Am champion too IIRC... Before him, the Baja 1000 was raced mostly by nobodies when it came to cars (bike class high-profile guys from day 1 including Malcolm Smith, Gunnar Nilsson and others)
