Back from Holidays and catching up with the gardening
Just back in the garden after a 2 week holiday and there is alot of work needing to be done to bring the garden back on track. I continue to work on my tomatoes that are still struggling and harvest the last of my corn. The borlotti beans are ready for harvest and the latest corn planting need some fertilisier. I also give an update on the brassica seedlings

I'm going to dehydrate my Jalapenos and turn them into powder this year. I use alot of Chilli powder in cooking, first time, wish me luck 😊
Love to see how that works out for you. Dad does this a lot with Ceyenne chillies never tried it with jalapeños
Do you plan to do a “how to overwinter your jalapeño” video?
Definitely I will. Will look at hosting the video in June and show how it went in September 👍
Such a bountiful crop.

❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’ve experimented with healing them and bearing them sideways and leaving them the way they grow in the tray. And everything that I’ve seen tells me it really doesn’t make a difference in the growth.
Yeah I shave been playing with the technique for a number of years now following my fathers technique. Anecdotally I am finding that I am getting a larger harvest from each plant
Exciting! My fig tree hasn’t produced fruit yet. I’m hoping it will later this year.
Best of luck with it I hope the harvest is bountiful!
Hi there, nice video! I saw the same thing happening in Jan for me with the tomatoes (too much rain, fruit flies invasion and struggling new seedlings) i also noticed some new seedling getting leaf spots very early due to the fact that I left some old plants near by. That could be why yours are also struggling.
Yeah I have just looked at my tomatoes and the humid weather doesn’t help with disease spread. They are doing alright at the moment but not too happy with this new variety
Hi love the updates, What variety tomatoes do you plant?
The varieties in this video are thunder F1 and Farah f1
Do you typically plant in early Feb? I'm in bris but this seems early?
In Sydney it’s the time to start planting. I am planting warm season varieties of caulies and broccoli so it helps. You need to be careful at this stage with all the heat that they are well watered but besides that they are good to go now. I’m brissy I would give it a little more time
@sydneybackyardveggies9612 sounds like time to buy / plant warm season varieties and give it a go to me. By time they come up it will be interesting to see if they work!
That’s awesome we’ll done
Hi Anthony! Last year in early Sept I planted a bunch of corn (heirloom: silvermine) and did them in clusters, very close together. I fed and watered them really well, and they came through at 2.5m high and with two cobs per stalk. Alas, my last seeding of broccoli and cauliflower had one success! So annoying! I've been intending to plant the next round for a week now, but kept forgetting. I'll go do it today, then... Thanks again for the video and the updates on what you do!
Appreciate you following and watching. I have been busy with work to put a video together but I finally planted out my first planting of broccoli and will be planting my first planting of caulie this week. The hot weather is making it too hard to work in my patch at the moment
Welcome back Anthony! Love the tip about mowing the corn stalks! I’ll be using that one! 👌🏼
Great content, Sydney Backyard Veggies. Looking forward to your next upload from you. I smashed the thumbs up button on your video. Keep up the fantastic work! Your approach to managing those tomato plants after your time away is really insightful. Have you considered any specific companion plants that could help deter those sap-sucking pests in the future?
Hi Anthony. Thank you for showing your patch when it’s not in a gardening book pristine state. It’s good to have realistic views of gardening life. 😊
Hi Anthony, good to see you back safe and sound. I agree with you about Jackson beans. I grew them last year and had the same result, so I went back to my old favorite Gourmet Delight. We've had some real crazy weather while you were away. Extreme heat and storms. As a result, I lost some of my seedlings. I have to start my onions again (dumb dumb here left them out in the heat and forgot about them). Well, I guess that's gardening. Cheers
Hi Anthony, so pleased you had a good trip. Looking a little tired, that jet lag is a killer, glad to have you back. You are fortunate to have family who will look after things while you are away.
Hi Anthony. 42 degrees in Adelaide today. My garden looks like it's been hit by a blowtorch. Have lost most of my capsicum fruits but at least the plants are still okay. Now have to wait for flower/fruit again. My cucumbers have been fried, tomatoes cooked, corn scorched. The only things that are still okay are my pumpkins and watermelons. So much hard work gone in a few hours. I now know why I used to stop gardening in late summer. (Soil was still damp so could not do anything to save the garden) Good to see your garden is surviving very changeable weather. Have a great week mate.
Hi mate, you've got me very curious about applying epsom salts! First time tomato grower here, and my entire crop (15 plants) all copped verticillium wilt (one of the wilting diseases at least). The thing I am confused about is, it seemed like each plant continued to out grow the disease. I'd say the top 30CM of the plant continued to stay green and grow taller, then the rest of the plant was just cooked, no branches or leaves. Is this normal? I applied copper fungicide way too late, but I think next year I will start spraying the seedlings from the get go!
Great harvest .its great to go away when u can to clear u mind now back to work
Welcome back and hope your're nice and rested, the garden looks wonderful as always.🏝🏖🏝
Thank you! Glad to be back in the patch and starting the winter garden
Hi Anthony......I am wondering why you get so many weeds............I never have that sort of regrowth of weeds.
Too much fertilisier and water and not staying on top of the weeding really helps with their growth I guess
Hi Anthony. My brassica seedlings are at a similar stage to yours (because I'm copying your schedule haha), but they're getting a lot of leaf miner damage. Do you think I should pull off the affected leaves to try to stop it spreading, even though that will slow down the progress of my seedlings quite a lot? Or should I just leave them be, and hope the leaf miners don't harm them too much?
Hi I would give them a spray of whatever contact spray you use. They will impact the brassicas especially at this stage. Pyrethrum works well but any home remedy would do
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Thank you!
I hope you had a good holiday. your veg garden looks great. It is amazing how quick plants can grow over a couple of weeks.
Thanks mate yeah impressed with the corn plants they have shot up fast. Need to get the beds dug over for the new plantings now
hi Anthony good to see ya back mate
Thanks mate good to be back need to sort out the garden for this season now
Isn’t it too late for tomatoes in Sydney? Mine are well and truly finished
You can get a late season planting but you need to plant seedlings now I wouldn’t wait any longer
Mate you sound out of breath are you ok ?? I'm a bit worried
Haha yeah I noticed that in the editing I think the jet lag kicked in in the videos and it shows in the breathing that and I’m thinking on my feet as I am talking to the camera. Thanks for the concern mate 👍
Welcome back mate. Hope you & your family had a great time overseas. Talk about weeds. WOW! They just thrive in heat & rain. Just came inside after doing some weeding. Still a lot more to do. My tomatoes R in pots 3 San Marzano & 2 cherry tomatoes. They R doing well, except 1 cherry is stunted. I have dill planted with it & wonder if this is not a good companion. What is your opinion? Your tomatoes look good. I'lll be surprised if they don't take off. 👍
Thanks yeah they did well considering I want here to look after them. There are some still struggling and I might replace them this week otherwise I will be running too late in the season. I will play it by ear and see how they go
Need some flowers in your garden to protect your plants before there is nothing left
Xin chào anh,tôi đến từ Việt Nam,tôi luôn ủng hộ những người thích trồng cây ❤
Do pumpkins get affected by fruit fly?
Not in my experience. Only capsicums jalapeños tomatoes and mostly fruit trees like stone fruit get impacted
@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Appreciate the info, thank you
The sfx are very loud & unnecessary
Sorry you have to deal with fruit fly. I am currently harvesting round 2 of Tommietoe, Roma and Tiger Tomatoes. This second crop is often larger than the first. Your corn looks great. I just harvested my first 2 watermelons. So sweet and juicy. Even the rind was sweet. Still have at least 4 to go. I know 100mm rain is too much but here in Adelaide it has not rained for months. I am getting very sick of watering with no "rain breaks". Thanks for your video Anthony.
Thanks David. I was always planning for the fruit flies to come so it’s all good got most of the fruit off them before they turned up. Every year I plan to plant watermelon but always run out of time will definitely get an early start next year. What variety did you plant? Yeah appreciate the rain doesn’t get spread evenly across our country I have a few SA followers that have said the same thing. Hope the rains come soon mate
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Hi Anthony. The types of watermelon were, all sweet, Candy Red and Sugar Baby. I had 7 plants of different melons and each plant produced 1 melon. However, I have now picked 2 and those 2 plants seem to be producing another melon. The melons were about 40cm by 20cm, so a good size and tasted absolutely amazing. I don't know if it's normal to only get 1 melon at a time from each plant, but I will take what I can get. The price of watermelon now makes it worthwhile. Gone are the days of 99c per kilo!!!!
I have in the past gotten 2-3 good sized watermelon per plant but I am meticulous in hand pollinating every female flower I see. I have spent way too much money on store bought watermelon as well this year a definite to grow next season!
Hey Anthony great update as per usual. Any tips to avoid cooking young seedlings in this heat? It’s a fine line between leggyness and scorching the seedlings in the sun. I have just had to replant seedlings I left out and cooked in the sun 😂
I water from below and make sure they have had a good soaking. If I know it’s going to be a really hot day 30+ I put them in morning sun only and then in the shade. I also leave some water in the tray during the day so the seedlings stay hydrated
What is the difference in doing this on vertical vs horizontal strings?
It makes it easier to train the cucumber vine around the string line you can twist them around the string
mad to see a productive garden in Sydney, great work man!
Thanks mate appreciate you watching 👍
I just love pruning, and you can clearly see how it opens everything up and promotes good air flow. Nice work, thank you 🙏🏽🌱🍅
Thanks Sharon. I have another pruning video where I prune more mature tomatoes hope they help
Oiii mate!! You can send some of that rain down to Adelaide thanks!! Stop hogging it all!! LOL!!
I’m in Adelaide too and the struggle is real isn’t it!
@@nasreenrichani1347 Absolutely!! We don't get water!!

@@nasreenrichani1347 Nada!! LOL!!
Thanks for sharing your garden with us, your timing has really helped me get some good harvests this year, and I have a better idea of how to manage the timing of my plantings myself! I've been very successful with planned tomatoes and corn, not so much with the cucumbers and only one zucchini survived to produce anything! I hope to continue following your timetable for planting through the autumn and winter - I've never been very successful with brassicas, so maybe your advice will change that! Travel safely!
Hi Anthony, great advice again thank you. Can you tell me what you do for blossom rot, is lack of calcium really the problem? Should I try epsom salts too? Great advice for the corn too.
I always add dolomite lime before planting my tomatoes that does the trick for me. Though if the tomatoes start producing fruit with blossom end rot I have rectified it quickly by mixing some dolomite lime in a watering can and and applying it to the root zone of the plants. The fruit that’s currently formed will still have the damage but the new flowers will form perfect fruit. I believe lack of calcium is the problem and have been able to remedy it though the application of dolomite lime
random thing is use a spray of 50/50 no sugar soft drink and water to keep pests away the aspartame will keep all bugs away and it will over take all chemical markers that bring in pests and pollinators they have done this in india for some time now to make it cheaper as pesticides are costly
That sounds like a great idea mate thanks for the tip 👍
Yes but you’re covering your plants in aspartame! A chemical with many negative health consequences. Try molasses mixed in water as a spray, much better 😊
I might have to try that! Thanks
Nice update Anthony! The corn is looking amazing! I always wondered if opening the corn a little to check it damaged it all so thanks do that tip! I can’t wait for the weather to cool down up here in Brissy so I can get the brassicas going! ☺️
I am in Japan at the moment making sure I get tips on where to go around Tokyo from your videos while I’m here 😀
Nice video..
Appreciate you watching!
Hi Anthony, I'm in Adelaide, and I thought it was too soon to start Brassicas. Will they struggle with the February heat?
Nah I have grown them over the last 2 years planting at this time I will havest caulies and broccoli in April. I do plant warm season varieties and they do need a fair bit of water at the early stages to weather the heat
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 What's your go to warm varieties, please
I get Aurora from active vista you can also buy Yates summer green which should be available at your local nursery
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 thank you
Well you can’t win in Oz hey sometimes too hot no rain too much rain or not the right weather conditions like too humid that’s when the insects / bugs love the conditions , but it’s all called gardening 🌱👒🙌 I follow your channel you are only roughly 3 to 4 hours away 😉 love your channel thank you so much for your lessons in all that you do I look forward to heaps more great to see us Aussies out there doing our thing great stuff 🥰 from port Macquarie 🇦🇺🐨🦘Karen
Thanks for watching I hope you arnt struggling with all the wind and rain we are getting at the moment.
Hi Anthony, great update. As per your advice I started my brassica seedlings as well this week. Looks like they are just starting to germinate. Also planted a tray of onions, nothing there yet. Same as you my first round of tomatoes and cucumbers have come to an end, and I need to remove them, but the weather has not been our friend. I'm sure your boys will look after the garden when you are away. Cheers
I’m going to follow your tips on onions. I want to try to grow some this year what variety you growing? I got a call from the fam that the brassica seedlings all got destroyed in the big storm we had on Thursday so it looks like I will be planting out store bought seedlings when I get back for my first planting.
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Sorry to hear about your seedlings. I've had that happen to me. Hunter brown is the variety I grow these days as I found some of the others don't bulb up at the end. Cheers mate.
Thanks for the tip will get them started when I get back
Your garden's doing well and mine's doing better, out front at least. The veggie garden out back had gone to seed and will come to life in the cooler months. Lots to clean up out there but not today as it's grass cutting day and that usually wipes out my energy.
Yeah it’s that time of the year when you need to start moving on the older veggies and getting the new ones in the ground
Hi Anthony, love the update. I am having the same problems with my tomato seedlings, with the erratic weather and all the rain diseases seem to be a major problem I will give your trick with epsom salts a go, fingers crossed. Jacqui
Hope it works for you it works for me most of the time though I’m away from the patch at the moment and we have had some pretty bad weather so not counting my luck that they are doing well when I get back in a weeks time
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Thanks AAnthony, fingers crossed your garden weathers the storms.
Good stuff mate, I’ll have to start thinking about cool season veg too.
Yeah mate this is the best time to start you will get multiple harvests over winter this way.
Great update video my friend 🌱
Thanks mate 👍
