    I'll second the first comment (genuinely). One tip for you if I can. When filming yourself, keep the eye level on the top third line ('rule of thirds') not in the centre👍

    principle should be for a metallic exposed part connected to the installation. And RCD at 30mAl provides required protection.

    Adibiatic equation. That particular one is for correctpy sizing the protective conductor. Can also be transposed for thermal withstand under fault conditions where T= S²K²/I² I always loved the matatical side of electrical engineering. If you can understand that then you can understand where a lot of regulations get their figures from These videos will be golden for any learner or as a refresher. Keep up the good work! 💪

    C3- enclosure made from non-combustible material C3- No RCD protection on socket outlets (C2 if serving outdoor equipment) C3-No charts/Labelling C3- No RCD protection on lighting C3- No RCD protection on circuits serving a bathroom/shower ( could be a c2 if no supplementary bonding where needed, wrong IP rating of equipment in zones)

    Regarding unidirectional RCD on a Solar install I would code a C2 as it would be dangerous under fault conditions. Great point

    The fact they’ve used fire retardant expanding foam suggest to me, their intention was to in the event of a fire within the consumer unit, to contain it.

    What size main earth if its TT- tails 16mm? I done a eicr- it was 10mm to the rod- it was clipping direct to the brick work and then went under ground for a bit. I assumed it had to be 16mm reading table 54.1 . As there is no mechanical protection on it and goes under ground for a short way. Please can you let us know your thoughts.

    Not sure if if this is a dumb question, but when we do an EICR on a TT install with an “all rcbo” board. If you have 1x solar PV circuit connected on a uni directional rcbo. Doesn’t this mean you just need to swap out 1x uni directional device fitted on the solar PV circuit, for a bi directional device? Or do you swap the lot out? How about EV also, stand alone battery storage or ups? Do these all now need bi directional?? RCD considerations are becoming more of a ball ache… but look on the bright side we have less testing on the bloody things now!!!

      In that situation, I think it would only be necessary to change the rcbo that supplies the PV circuit. The regulation applies to all situation where the current can flow in both directions.

    If i have a circuit thats protected by a 32 amp b type rcbo and the measured zs is say 1.87 ohms can i mark down on the sheet that its getting used as fault protection aswell so the max allowed is 1667 rather than 1.1 ?

      Hi, thanks for your question. In situations where the 30 milliamp rcd protection is used as fault protection, the max zs is 1667. You could mention in the notes on the test sheet that max zs is 1667 ohms as per table 41.5 Regards James

      @JamesCurnowElectricalEngineer this was always my thinking but someone was telling me you still need to comply with the 1.1 ohms between the L and N conductors for a short circuit fault to protect the cable , is this correct ? Can you shed any light on this

      It is important to bear in mind that the rcd protection only applies to fault current (line to earth). Overcurrent protection is provided by either an mcb or the overcurrent protection included in the rcbo, and for this to operate quickly enough to protect against short circuit current, it's necessary for the device to disconnect faster than the time taken for the current to damage the cable. So, when relying on rcd protection for the fault protection and disconnection time, it is a good idea to also measure between line and neutral, and if the loop impedance (line to neutral) is less than table 41.3, a type b mcb or rcbo should operate instantaneously. Note, that disconnection times relate to fault current, and there isn't a disconnection time for short circuit current, but it's necessary to ensure the protective device operates quicker than the time it would take for the current to exceed the thermal withstand of the cable. So its necessary to do the Adiabatic equation to check this. When completing a test sheet, the form asks us for max permitted zs (earth fault loop impedance) and there isn't a separate box for short circuit current. So it's necessary to record the information relating to the max zs, but also be aware about the short circuit. I hope this helps. Regards James

    Can't you just measure the Line and Armour seperately and add them together or measure the Armour end to end and approximate the distance and divide to get a per metre value to see if it complies Zs , R1+R2 etc...wise

    Just read an article on the professional electrician website, dated 20 Feb 24, that states "Cable entries, such as those often used for back entry into the consumer unit must be provided with suitable sealing methods and may include intumescent gaskets, grommets and/or fire sealants to maintain the degree of fire integrity." The article is called "Metal consumer units in an installation forming part of a TT system earthing arrangement | NICEIC"

      Hi, Thank you for your comment. I've read the article as well, and I agree that in the case of TT systems, it is a good idea to use the fire rated glands for the meter tails, because they provide mechanical protection to the meter tails. I mentioned this is the video. This is particularly important for a TT system, in order to prevent an earth fault occurring between the meter tails and the metal consumer unit. The glands are also useful for maintaining the IP rating of the consumer unit. The point that I make in the video, is that consumer units have been required to be made of non combustible material, or enclosed within an enclosure that is not combustible. However, the regulation introduced in 2015 didn't mention maintaining the fire rating of consumer units. Of course there are also building regulations to bear in mind, which may mean fire rating of the wall that a consumer unit is mounted on could need to have the fire rating maintained. Regards James

I’ve just installed a CU in my house (notified BC) on a TT system. I really don’t want to gunge up the rear entry holes with sealant and, as you say in your video, I was sure I didn’t need to. However, the more I look in to it it’s far from clear cut and that article says “must be provided with suitable sealing methods”. So must not should. I’m now thinking of getting a intumescent pad and sticking that somewhere in the box.

      Hi Dean, thank you for your comment. I'm glad the video helped. When using swa as the cpc, it will be necessary to obtain the data from the manufacturer. Data sheets are usually available on the manufacturer's website, and I notice they include a value for the line conductor in ohms per kilometer. It used to be possible to get the value for the swa as well, but it may be necessary to contact the manufacturer and ask for a value for ohms per kilometer for the swa as well as the line conductor. This can then be used in the calculation I mentioned in the video. Regards James

    This is not totally correct. You can do electrical work in a Bathroom/Toilet providing it is not a new circuit and that it is outside of the zones.

      Hi Paul, Thank you for your comment. The current version of part p for use in England does mention the zones in a bath or shower room. However in other parts of the UK it can be different. For example the requirements for part p are different in Wales, where the part p document refers to the special locations but not the zones. So, in this video I mentioned some of the special locations and that it's important to check the version of part p that applies depending on which part of the UK the installation is located. It's also worth pointing out that alterations to wiring in a special location are also notifiable. Regards James

    It does surprise me that there isn't some stipulation, whereby if a CU is mounted onto combustible material like wood, that cable entries, especially rear ones that are bigger overall, don't have to be sealed in order to stop the spread of fire into the wood.
